Commissioned for the “At Lunch” series by Britten Sinfonia and Wigmore Hall. World Premiere given at the Musée d’Orsay, Paris on 1st March 2011 by members of Britten Sinfonia: Jacqueline Shave (violin), Martin Outram (viola), Caroline Dearnley (cello), Roger Linley (double bass) and Huw Watkins (piano). This commission was made possible by funding from Arts Council England.

COMPOSER’S NOTE The title comes from the poem Musée des Beaux Arts by W.H. Auden. This poem describes the scene depicted in a painting by Breugel, of Icarus falling from the sky having flown too close to the sun using wings made by his father Daedalus. The combination of youthful hubris and the heat from the sun melting the wax that holds the feathers in place causes the catastrophe. But it is a catastrophe that nobody seems to notice; everybody depicted in the painting is going about their business, oblivious to it. In Breughel’s* Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away Quite leisurely from the disaster; the ploughman may Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry, But for him it was not an important failure; the sun shone As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green Water; and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky, had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on. W.H. Auden In the same way my piece involves a calamitous event, which would seem to go unnoticed by four members of the ensemble. They go about their business as if nothing is happening, despite the fact that their music is mostly overwhelmed by the event itself. everything turns away is scored for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass. The pianist will be offstage at the start of the performance, perhaps sitting in the audience. At a prescribed point in the string music he/she will walk on stage, open the piano lid and – apparently spontaneously – play the part completely independently of the other 4 players and preferably from memory. The string players continue to play as if oblivious to the presence of the pianist. The piano part should begin at approximately bar 66 of the string players’ music and end at around their bar 98/99. The pianist then walks offstage as the strings continue to the end of the piece. *The spelling is, in fact, 'Breugel'. The painter changed his name in order not to be confused with his sons.
