These short pieces form a suite of reflections, paraphrases and deconstructions of pop music styles of the 1970s and 1980s. A kind irony is meant through all of them, but not caricature. Also: this is not pop music.

Play rhythmically with great precision, but without being pedantic, always suggesting the beat. To achieve this, it will be necessary to accentuate beats and syncopations in different ways. The pulse of each bar, especially when the time signature changes, should always be sufficiently marked to make clear the structure of the bar. Freely vary the sound and dynamic, also using ponticello when not indicated, to suggest other instruments such as trumpets playing funk, guitars with distortion, acoustic guitars, even mandolins.

Each movement can be played separatly as an encore piece. When playing the whole suite, one should begin with the Jazzrock praeludium. Following that, the order is free.

Accidentals count only for the note for the whole bar.

This suite is written for the Cellist Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt. For this new version I thank my wife Dina.

Premiered on 1 April 2009 at the ‘7th Adam International Cello Festival and Competition’ Christchurch, New Zealand.

Edition Peters

For more than 200 years, Edition Peters has been synonymous with excellence in classical music publishing. Established in 1800 with the keyboard works of J. S. Bach, by 1802 the company had acquired Beethoven’s First Symphony. In the years following, an active publishing policy enabled the company to expand its catalogue with new works by composers such as Brahms, Grieg and Liszt, followed in the 20th century by Richard Strauss, Arnold Schoenberg and John Cage.

Today, with its offices in Leipzig, London and New York publishing the work of living composers from around the world, Edition Peters maintains its role as a champion of new music. At the same time, the company’s historic and educational catalogues continue to be developed with award-winning critical and pedagogical editions.
