CHESTER MUSIC

COMPOSER’S NOTE I have named this song cycle Elsewhere because, for me, these highly evocative poems suggest so much more than their literal meanings, taking me to other places, other times, to magical worlds that have been lost, and to the wonders of enduring love. In the first song, a long orchestral interlude separates the two sentences that make up the poem. The second and fifth songs speak of absence and loss; they are very similar in musical content and structure but arrive at different conclusions, the fifth song, Just This, ending more calmly. Summer Sky, the fourth song, is lighter in tone and ends with large, quiet chords spread throughout the orchestra. The third and sixth songs are love songs, with Good Night recalling musical elements of the previous five songs. Elsewhere lasts approximately 27 minutes and was completed in June 2018. B.E.

II. After the Voices Youth is gone from the place where I was young even the language that I heard here once its cadences that went on echoing a youth forgotten and the great singing of the beginning have fallen silent with the voices that were the spirit of them and their absences were no more noticed than were those of the unreturning birds each spring until there were no words at all for what was gone but it was always so I have no way of telling what I miss I am only the one who misses it (Printed in the New York Times Sunday magazine, 1st November 2015) (From THE MOON BEFORE MORNING p57 Copper Canyon Press 2015)

V. Just This When I think of the patience I have had back in the dark before I remember or knew it was night until the light came all at once at the speed it was born to with all the time in the world to fly through not concerned about ever arriving and then the gathering of the first stars unhurried in their flowering spaces and far into the story of the planets cooling slowly and the ages of rain then the seas starting to bear memory the gaze of the first cell at its waking how did this haste begin this little time at any time this reading by lightning scarcely a word this nothing this heaven (Bloodaxe Selected Poems; New Poems (2007)
