Notes on beginning of D.C. MONUMENTS
There are 8 Ocean Drums situated in the hall as follows: Drum 1, 22 inches, should be in the back of the hall, top balcony center. Drums 2 and 3, 16 inches, on the right and left 3rd level balcony closer to the stage. Drums 4 and 5, 16 inches, on the right and left 2nd balcony level closer to the stage than Drums 2 and 3. Drums 6 and 7, 12 inches, on the right and left 1st level balcony closer to the stage than Drums 4 and 5. Drum 8, 12 inches, in the orchestra seating area center, in front of the stage. Each player should start approximately 5 seconds after hearing the entrance of the preceding player and continue for about 10 seconds creating an overlapping sound. The effect should be of water rushing from the back to the front of the hall as a wave. The improvised mini Maraca solo is as follows: Start with a swivel and continue to increase its rhythmic activity out of meter until measure 10. Gradually get into a rhythm with subdivisions of 16th triplets in 3/4 time, exploit the sound properties by cupping hands and getting closer to the mike, etc. At measure 15 use a Foot Shaker trill as a bridge; pick up Shaker in r.h. and Maraca in l.h. and improvise. At measure 17 once again use the Foot Shaker as a bridge while picking up the Frame Drum, starting with sparse rhythmic activity, gradually increase the activity and volume until a climax then gradually decrease both activity and volume until you cue the conductor who will then cue the other percussion players (on stage) to drop out in order: 4, 3, 2, 1. The solo ends with a long drone and Foot Shaker trill. Accompanying percussion is a follows: Perc. 1 plays the Maraca swivel on stage and becomes Perc. 1 for the rest of the movement. Perc. 2 on stage begins at measure 10, Perc. 3 on stage begins at measure 12, and Perc. 4 on stage begins at measure 14.
