Between the Skies, the River and the Hills After The Bridge Over the Drina by Ivo Andrić, Joseph Haydn Keyboard Concerto No. 11 in D major (Hob. XVIII/11), and Kad ja pođoh na Bembašu. Between the Skies, the River and the Hills was premiered by Ivana Gavrić and Southbank Sinfonia, conducted by Karin Hendrickson at St. John's Waterloo, London at 6pm on the 7th June 2018. Orchestration 2 utes (2nd ute doubling piccolo) 2 oboes (2nd oboe doubling Cor. Anglais) 2 clarinets in Bb (2nd clarinet doubling bass clarinet) 2 bassoons 2 horns in F 2 trumpets in Bb (mutes: straight and harmon mute with stem (both trumpets) percussion (1 player): timpani (3 drums minimum: I (32-30 inches), II (29-28 inches) & III (26-25 inches) vibraphone (with motor and 2 bows) suspended cymbal, medium/large size, c. 20 inches suspended sizzle china cymbal, c. 20 inches** lion's roar, large size ideally*** ve woodblocks (low, medium-low, medium, medium-high, high) triangle snare drum piano Violin 1 Violin 2 Viola Violoncello (two desks minimum) Double bass (one desk minimum) **Alternatively, a china cymbal with a sizzle attachment or a cabasa string/metal beads attached can be used, or if a china cymbal is not available, the suspended cymbal with a sizzle attachment etc. (sizzle attachment should be on for the 1st movement and taken off in time for the 3rd movement). *** Alternatively use a superball mallet or 'Bongers' massage tool (purchasable online in the UK and US) on the lowest timpano. N.B. i) Natural swells and dips in dynamics due to phrasing (such as occur in Classical and Romantic music) are expected but not notated. Similarly, a certain amount of rubato (likewise that one would feel free to employ in Romantic music) is acceptable (and in some cases desirable!). ii) All strings need mutes iii) Only 'effect' piano pedalling is notated. Con pedal is expected throughout, but left to the pianist's discretion. All 'effect' pedalling (which is only a guide) can of course be altered in response to the instrument and acoustic if necessary. iv)  =  throughout. (N.B.  never equals triplet )
