Adagio dolcissimo poco recitativo To the memory of Peter Cropper (1945-2015), Shakespearian violinist Première audition, Opéra de Limoges, 21 décembre 2018 Catherine Hunold/Musiciens de l'Orchestre de l'Opéra de Limoges En 1995 j'écrivais ma première pièce sur un texte de Shakespeare, la Cantate No. 4 op. 44, sur le sonnet 66. Lorsqu'Alain Mercier, directeur de l'Opéra de Limoges, me demanda d'écrire à nouveau sur un texte de Shakespeare j'eus l'idée de retourner vers les Sonnets et, particulièrement, sur ceux qui voisinaient avec celui que j'avais déjà mis en musique, par souci de continuité expressive. Il m'apparut clairement alors, que ce que j'avais considéré comme une exception à mon style habituel en 1995, un usage très clair de la tonalité et un climat romantique assumé dont j'étais moi-même surpris et presque choqué, était devenu depuis dans ma musique non pas une norme mais une possibilité plus ou moins récurrente modulée au filtre de mes préoccupations successives. J'ai depuis cette date traité de l'amour dans plusieurs œuvres vocales, les Three Love songs, les Melodias de la melancolia et les Cantates No. 5 et 7 avec à chaque fois à cœur d'accueillir sans réserve une esthétique non pas néo-romantique mais romantique. En effet, dans la mesure où l'on peut considérer que le sentiment romantique a survécu à la période romantique, il ne me semble pas anachronique de m'exprimer dans ce langage lorsque le sujet s'y prête. Or comment pourrait on parler d'amour autrement qu'avec des mélodies généreuses et une harmonie tonale sans tomber dans le hors sujet le plus grotesque ? Comment faire aussi pour que ces mélodies et ces harmonies ne soient pas une répétition pure et simple de ce qui a déjà été fait ? C'est, me semble-t-il, le problème qui doit se poser à chaque compositeur refusant les deux extrêmes que représentent l'orthodoxie moderniste (ou académisme d'avant-garde) et l'exercice de style.

Of Time and Love (De l'amour et du temps), écrite de novembre 2017 à février 2018, est en trois parties enchainées pouvant être exécutées séparément, ce que, toutefois, je ne recommanderai pas. Les motifs thématiques circulent de Sonnet en Sonnet et le sextuor à cordes (ou le piano) s'exprime souvent seul en de larges préludes, commentaires ou postludes dont le dernier reprend le thème d'ouverture du premier et referme l'œuvre comme un cercle, ce qui est très fréquent chez moi. L'œuvre, un adagio d'environ un quart d'heure, gagne donc a être interprétée d'un bout à l'autre.

Ces Sonnets sont parmi les plus sombres écrits par Shakespeare et peut-être même parmi les choses les plus sombres jamais écrites sur le cours de la beauté fragile de la vie et de l'amour. Ma musique tente simplement d'en être le reflet fidèle.

Le dédicataire, Peter Cropper, était un musicien extraordinaire. J'avais eu le privilège de faire sa connaissance en 1989 à Kuhmo (Finlande) où, lors de ce festival d'exception, il avait donné, avec ses collègues du Lindsay Quartet, une intégrale des quatuors de Beethoven à couper le souffle. Nous avons très vite sympathisé en nous mettant d'accord ¨ sur la dimension shakespearienne de toute vraie musique et cela donna lieu a une collaboration dont le couronnement fut l'écriture de mon Quatrième Quatuor à cordes op. 42 (Omaggio a Beethoven) et d'une petite sonate pour violon seul en hommage à Mozart (op. 45) qu'il m'avait commandée pour son festival à Sheffield, ainsi qu'un texte d'introduction (comiquement mal traduit en anglais) pour sa programmation d'un Festival de musique Française et Anglaise au Wigmore Hall intitulé Channel Tunnel.

Lorsque je me suis mis à écrire Of Time and Love je n'avais pas en tête l'idée de rendre hommage à Peter Cropper. Puis, en faisant travailler les merveilleux musiciens de l'Orchestre de l'Opéra de Limoges je me suis mis à penser à lui et à ce qu'il aurait dit s'il avait été là… A méditer aussi sur la façon qu'il aurait eu de traduire les émotions perçues dans ma musique, s'il avait dû jouer cette œuvre, en termes non seulement musicaux mais dramatiques et poétiques.

En vérité Shakespeare est ma source d'inspiration musicale principale. Oui, c'est quelque peu paradoxal, en effet. Mais il me semble que mon travail ne cherche, au fond, qu'à traduire en musique le tumulte esthétique, la puissance d'évocation et le foisonnement des langages les plus variés qui se trouvent dans Shakespeare, en un mot, ce plein qui rend vaine toute querelle de chapelle et condamne sans appel le culte du vide semblant régner dans ‹‹ l'Art contemporain ››.

Lorsqu'il m'arrive de croiser sur ma route des manifestations artistiques (qu'elles proviennent de créateurs ou, plus rarement, d'interprètes dans toute discipline) qui rendent possible cette communion avec l'esprit shakespearien, je ne peux que me réjouir de sentir mon esprit happé vers le ciel. Peter Cropper faisait partie de ces interprètes shakespeariens dont ma musique a tant besoin et notre trop brève rencontre fut une illumination sur mon chemin.

Sonnet 64 Quand je vois la main cruelle du temps dégrader dans le sépulcre la coûteuse parure de la vieillesse usée ; quand je vois les hautes tours rasées, et le bronze éternel sujet à la rage de la mort ; Quand je vois l’Océan affamé empiéter sur le royaume du rivage, et la terre ferme s’étendre sur le domaine liquide, augmenté de la perte ou diminué du gain de l’autre ; Quand je vois tous ces changements d’état, et les États eux-mêmes s’écrouler, ces ruines me font songer que le temps viendra pour emporter mon bien-aimé.

Cette pensée me met la mort dans l’âme, en la réduisant à pleurer d’avoir ce qu’elle craint tant de perdre.

Sonnet 65 Puisque le bronze, la pierre, la terre, la mer sans bornes, ne peuvent résister à la triste mortalité, comment la beauté se défendrait-elle contre cette furie, elle qui en action n’est pas plus forte qu’une fleur ?

Oh ! comment le souffle emmiellé d’un été tiendrait-il contre l’assaut destructeur des jours en batterie, quand les rocs imprenables ne sont pas assez solides, ni les portes d’acier assez fortes pour braver les coups du temps ? Ô effrayante réflexion ! Comment, hélas ! dérober à jamais à l’écrin du temps son plus beau bijou ?

Quelle main est assez forte pour repousser son pied rapide ?

Quel moyen de sauver la beauté de ses ravages ?

Ah ! aucun, si ce n’est ce miracle que mon amour resplendisse à jamais dans l’encre noire !

Sonnet 63 Un jour viendra où mon bien-aimé sera, comme je le suis maintenant, écrasé et épuisé par la main injurieuse du temps.

Un jour viendra où les heures auront tari son sang et couvert son front de lignes et de rides ; où le matin de sa jeunesse Aura gravi la nuit escarpée de l’âge ; où toutes ces beautés, dont il est roi aujourd’hui, iront s’évanouissant ou seront évanouies des yeux du monde, dérobant le trésor de son printemps.

Pour ce jour-là, je me fortifie dès à présent contre le couteau cruel de l’âge destructeur, afin que, s’il tranche la vie de mon bien-aimé, il ne retranche pas du moins sa beauté de la mémoire humaine.

Sa beauté sera vue dans ces lignes noires, à jamais vivantes, et il vivra en elles d’une éternelle jeunesse.
