GHSA PAST CHAMPIONS

WORD FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

GREETINGS, GHSA BASEBALL FANS

W

elcome to the 2019 GHSA Baseball championships! The games are sure to be exciting as all of the schools represented are looking forward to their team achieving the title of “Champion”. However we all know that all of our teams are outstanding and are definitely winners. This has been an outstanding season and this year’s championship games will include familiar faces as well as teams that have worked hard and peaked at just the right time. Our congratulations are in order for all of the teams, coaches, administrators, students and parents who have supported the athletes through this year’s journey to the final games. I know you will enjoy and appreciate the games and all of the work leading up to this exciting event. I would also like to thank you for your support of high school baseball throughout the season. Your attendance and support is integral to the success of high school athletics and for the team you are here to cheer on. Good sportsmanship is expected from our athletes and I urge you to be positive in your support of all of our teams. Let’s work together to make today’s games a great experience for all involved. To put on an event of this magnitude takes many volunteers who have worked tirelessly to pro-

vide a “first class” event. Many hours of work from this group will enhance the experience of our players, students and fans. The GHSA staff has been working for weeks as well to ensure a special event for all involved. Finally I would like to thank our corporate sponsors who make it possible to put on these championships. Their advertisements can be seen throughout this venue and I encourage you to support them whenever possible. The GHSA wants to thank these exemplary companies for their involvement, we appreciate their support. Thank you for your attendance and I know you are going to enjoy the best high school baseball anywhere! Sincerely,

James R. Hines, Jr. Executive Director

GHSA BASEBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

TWO OF GEORGIA’S MARQUEE VENUES SET STAGE FOR MUST-SEE SHOWDOWNS BY SETH ELLERBEE | SELLERBEE@SCOREATL.COM

S

unTrust Park will host the AAAAAAA State Baseball championship series for the first time ever as Hillgrove and Parkview meet on Monday for a double-header to determine the champion in the state’s highest classification. In the event of an ‘if’ game, it will be contested on Tuesday. Searching for its first-ever baseball title, Hillgrove enters the finals at 32-8 after fighting its way through the bracket with two of its series going to decisive Game 3’s. In the first round, the Hawks blanked Wheeler 7-0 in the first game before losing 1-0 in the second game. In the Game 3, Hillgrove earned a statement-making win 13-0. In the second round, Woodstock took the Hawks to three games, but this time Hillgrove had to battle back. Woodstock won the first game 14-2 before Hillgrove responded with a 13-9 victory in the second game. In the Game 3, Hillgrove held on for a 4-3 victory to advance. In the quarterfinals, Hillgrove beat Mill Creek 7-4 and 8-3 to earn the semifinal

berth. Against Grayson in the semis, the Hawks won 9-4 and 4-1 to earn the berth. Parkview enters its championship series at 34-4 and in the hunt for its eighth baseball title and second-consecutive AAAAAAA crown. The Panthers avoided any Game 3’s through the bracket with victories over Peachtree Ridge 2-1 and 6-0 in the first round. In the second round the Panthers beat North Forsyth 13-0 and 8-6. In the quarterfinals it beat Walton 5-3 and 7-4 to earn the semifinal berth against North Gwinnett. Against the Bulldogs, Parkview won 9-6 and 9-3 to advance. The Gwinnett Stripers of CoolRay Field in Gwinnett County will be setting the stage for Class AAAAA’s state finalists Loganville and Ola. Loganville enters the championship series as the two-time defending state champions in AAAAA with four titles overall after winning AAAA titles in 2008 and 2012. The Red Devils sit at 33-6 after moving relatively unchallenged through the bracket. In the first round

Loganville defeated Lithonia 11-3 and 13-0 to advance. In the second round, it outlasted Carrollton 5-2 in the first game and 15-4 in the second game. In the quarterfinals the Red Devils beat Thomas County Central 3-0 and 6-1 to earn a semifinal berth. In the semis, Loganville won 11-5 and 6-1 over Locust Grove to earn its title berth. Looking for its first-ever title, Ola enters the finals series at 29-10. The Mustangs beat Veterans handedly in the first round with two 10-0 victories. In the second round, it handed McIntosh a 7-2 and 5-1 loss to advance to the quarterfinals. Against Buford in the quarters, Ola won the first game 5-2 before the Wolves battled back with a 3-1 victory in the second game to force a decisive Game 3. In the third game, Ola fought to an 8-3 victory to earn its semifinal berth. In the semis, Ola held on for a closely contested 1110 victory in the first game and a 6-4 win in the second game to earn the title berth. Photos courtesy of Ola HS and Parkview HS 3 | W W W.
