GHSA 2019 STATE BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS | MACON, LUTHER WILLIAMS FIELD | CLASS 2A & 3A
GHSA PAST CHAMPIONS
WORD FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
GREETINGS, GHSA BASEBALL FANS
W
elcome to the 2019 GHSA Baseball championships! The games are sure to be exciting as all of the schools represented are looking forward to their team achieving the title of “Champion”. However we all know that all of our teams are outstanding and are definitely winners. This has been an outstanding season and this year’s championship games will include familiar faces as well as teams that have worked hard and peaked at just the right time. Our congratulations are in order for all of the teams, coaches, administrators, students and parents who have supported the athletes through this year’s journey to the final games. I know you will enjoy and appreciate the games and all of the work leading up to this exciting event. I would also like to thank you for your support of high school baseball throughout the season. Your attendance and support is integral to the success of high school athletics and for the team you are here to cheer on. Good sportsmanship is expected from our athletes and I urge you to be positive in your support of all of our teams. Let’s work together to make today’s games a great experience for all involved. To put on an event of this magnitude takes many volunteers who have worked tirelessly to pro-
vide a “first class” event. Many hours of work from this group will enhance the experience of our players, students and fans. The GHSA staff has been working for weeks as well to ensure a special event for all involved. Finally I would like to thank our corporate sponsors who make it possible to put on these championships. Their advertisements can be seen throughout this venue and I encourage you to support them whenever possible. The GHSA wants to thank these exemplary companies for their involvement, we appreciate their support. Thank you for your attendance and I know you are going to enjoy the best high school baseball anywhere! Sincerely,
James R. Hines, Jr. Executive Director

GHSA BASEBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
HISTORIC LUTHER WILLIAMS FIELD BECOMES FIRST-TIME CHAMPIONSHIP HOST BY SETH ELLERBEE | SELLERBEE@SCOREATL.COM
T
he state baseball championships debut at Historic Luther Williams Field in Macon after its revitalization in recent years to host the Macon Bacon, a wood-bat collegiate summer league team in the Coastal Plains League. The stadium was built in 1929 as the centerpiece to Macon’s Central City Park and has hosted countless events, teams and players over the years. The stadium has also been used in several motion pictures including the Jackie Robinson movie 42 starring Harrison Ford and Clint Eastwood’s Trouble with the Curve. Several Major League stars have played at the stadium including Pete Rose (Macon Peaches, 1962) and Chipper Jones, Jermaine Dye and Andruw Jones before the Macon Braves moved to Rome. Now, it’s high school baseball’s turn as the Class AAA contenders—Pace Academy and Pike County—will face off in a double-header on Wednesday and the AA contenders—Jeff Davis and Rockmart—will meet for their two-game series on Monday. Any ‘if’ games in either series are scheduled for Thursday. Searching for its first baseball title since winning three-straight from 1993-
1995, Pace Academy enters the finals series with a 25-6 record after moving swiftly through its tournament competitors. In the first round, Pace Academy defeated East Jackson 10-0 and 15-2. In the second round, it held Calhoun to just one run after 10-1 and 13-0 victories. In the quarterfinals, it beat Crisp County 5-4 and 14-0 to advance. In the semifinals, the Knights cruised to 9-1 and 8-4 victories to earn the championship berth. Looking for its first-ever title, Pike County enters the title game at 32-4 after moving past Long County 4-1 and 5-1 in the first round. In the second round, Pike County blanked Islands in two games 7-0 and 1-0. In the quarterfinals the Pirates were taken to a decisive third game by Fannin County. In the first game, Pike won 6-1 but struggled to a 9-0 loss in the second game however the Pirates responded with a 2-0 victory in Game 3 to advance to the semifinals. Against Hart County in the semis, Pike won 9-2 in the first game before holding on for a 4-3 victory in Game 2 to earn the title berth. In Class AA, Jeff Davis enters the finals series at 29-6 and searching for the second baseball title in school history after winning
the AA championship in 2017. Rockmart will be playing to take home its first title. Rockmart’s path to the finals was a tested one and after beating Washington 14-0 and 13-0 in the first round, the Yellowjackets faced three-straight three-game series. Against Elbert County, Rockmart had to battle after losing the first game 6-4. It responded with a 5-0 and 10-6 victories to advance. In the quarterfinals against Harlem, the Yellowjackets lost the first game 8-5 but controlled the next two game 5-0 and 7-1. In the semifinals, Callaway won the first game 5-4 but Rockmart rallied to win 4-0 and 7-5 to earn the title berth. Jeff Davis faced two three-game series in its path to the finals. In the first round, Jeff Davis won 10-2 and 13-0. Against Fitzgerald in the second round, the Yellowjackets won 5-3 in Game 1 but it dropped Game 2 3-2. In the decisive third game, Jeff Davis held on for a 3-2 victory. In the quarterfinals against Social Circle, Jeff Davis won 6-4 and 11-1 before facing Bleckley County in the semis. Against Bleckley, Jeff Davis lost the first game 1-0 but rallied with 8-2 and 13-12 victories to earn the title berth. Photos courtesy of Fred Assaf (Pace Academy) and Jeff Davis HS.
