DUAL WRESTLING PRELIMS BRING CHAMPIONSHIP FIELD INTO FOCUS

T

he results from the Dual Wrestling Region and Area Tournaments set the field of teams that competed in the pre-

lims this past weekend and now the eight remaining programs in each classification will compete for the ultimate prize this weekend at the GHSA Team Duals Wrestling State Championships. Following the conclusion of the two rounds of prelims, the GHSA conducted a process to seed the championship field and this will likely result in this year’s most successful programs not meeting until the final rounds.

In Class 7A, seven-time defending dual state champion Camden County dominated its first two opponents—posting a 75-0 shutout over Marietta and a 72-3 victory over Etowah.

This is reminiscent of last year when the Wildcats followed a first-round bye with a 78-0 flawless triumph over McEachern.

Camden County’s success in the prelims again this year, and its historic success as Georgia’s premier program will once again be the storyline in Class 7A. The Wildcats’ join Colquitt County and Lowndes in the championship field—making Region 1 one of two regions to send a trio of teams to the championships. Region 6 is also represented by three teams after top seed North Forsyth, West Forsyth and Lambert all advanced to the championships. The other two teams to emerge from the prelims in Class 7A are Region 8 top-seeded Mill Creek and Region 3 topseeded North Paulding.

Class 6A appears to be especially competitive again this season. Last year, defending state champion Pope was served a 39-38 loss to Dalton and was denied a trip to the championships. Buford eventually captured the state title in its first season in Class 6A and the Wolves will be back this year after moving past Kennesaw Mountain 81-0 and South Effingham 66-6.

Richmond Hill and Cambridge both advanced to the championships as No. 3 seeds and defeated top seeds Pope (43-24) and Grovetown (58-24) in their latest victories, respectively.

FAMILIAR FOES FACE-OFF Class 5A also got bolstered by reclassification a year ago as two-time reigning Class 4A state champion Woodward Academy joined the classification. Woodland-Bartow ultimately went on to win its third-straight state crown, however, and will be back to lead the championship field with Woodward Academy, Locust Grove, Jones County, Ola, Jackson County, Cass and Coffee.

Jefferson will be looking for its 20th all-time duals state championship in Class 4A after a bye and 60-15 win over Troup in the prelims. The Dragons’ lopsided victory was an outlier in an otherwise dramatic prelim. Marist earned its championship berth with a 39-34 victory over Perry, Heritage-Catoosa scored a 38-34 win over Benedictine to advance and Columbus edged Chestatee 37-36 in another narrow thriller.

North Hall’s Class 3A duals state title last season was vacated following the discovery of procedural errors. The Trojans defeated Gilmer in the finals a year ago, and the Bobcats avenged that loss this past weekend in the prelims with a 5016 win over North Hall. Gilmer followed that victory with a perfect 81-0 win over Appling County and will lead the field with Adairsville, Morgan County, Rockmart, Sonoraville, North Murray, Oconee County and Murray County—which will faceoff with Gilmer to open the championships.

Class 2A’s Oglethorpe County won its first-ever wrestling state title at last year’s duals and will look to defend its title after a strong showing in the prelims that included a 71-6 win over Coosa and an 80-0 win over Putnam County. The Patriots will take on Pepperell to open the championships and will lead the Class 2A field with Vidalia, Lamar County, Fannin County, Lovett, Haralson County and Dade County.

Class A’s Mt. Pisgah also produced its first-ever state title at last year’s duals. The Patriots return to the championships after big wins over Towns County (66-12) and Mt. de Sales (62-12) in the prelims. Mt. Pisgah, Landmark Christian, Charlton County, Trion, Social Circle, Screven County, Commerce and St. AnnePacelli make Class A the only classification that sent eight top seeds to the championships.

REIGNING CHAMPS AND TITLE HOPEFULS COMPETE FOR ULTIMATE PRIZE

he Team Dual Wrestling Championships will be held at seven separate host sites this year and the brackets are loaded with the state’s most accomplished programs. This is certainly the case in Georgia’s highest classification where seven-time defending dual state champion Camden County will be represented as the No. 1 seed. West Forsyth has been defeated by Camden County in each of the past two years, including last year’s finals. This year, the Wolverines will open against a tough North Paulding squad and will have a potential rematch with Camden County in the quarterfinals.

Buford won last year’s Class 6A championship in what was the program’s first-ever year in the classification. The Wolves clinched that title with a 46-17 win over Creekview in the finals. This year, Buford will open up the championships against Lassiter and will potentially face Creekview or Richmond Hill in the quarterfinals. Buford, Valdosta, Richmond Hill and Alexander have all won dual state titles in the last five years and lead a stacked Class 6A field.

COMMITTED TO WINNING Woodland-Bartow cruised past the competition last year to clinch its third-straight Class 5A dual state title and will head to McDonough High School to compete against a familiar field of contenders, including Woodward Acad-

emy, which joined the classification last year following the latest reclassification cycle, Ola, Cass and Jackson County.

Woodland-Cartersville will open the championships against Locust Grove, while last year’s runner up—Cass—opens up with Coffee.

Jefferson has an opportunity to capture its 20th alltime dual state title this weekend and all 19 of its previous championship runs have occurred over the last 20 seasons.

In fact, 2020 was the first and only time the Dragons were not represented at the top of the podium in the sports history. Jefferson returned to form last year by conquering a tough Class 4A field and will open this year’s championships against Bainbridge. Incredibly, six of the eight teams heading to LaGrange to compete for this year’s title failed to qualify for state a year ago: Bainbridge, Hampton, Columbus, Marist, Cedartown, Heritage-Catoosa.

UP FOR GRABS North Hall had its duals state title vacated last season and the Trojans were denied a return to the championships this year with a 50-26 loss to Gilmer in a rematch of last year’s (37-27) finals this past weekend. As a result, Gilmer is riding in with tremendous momentum and will aim for its first state title since 2016 when the program captured its seventh-straight duals state title. Sonoraville, Rockmart,

Morgan County and Adairsville return to the championships again, while Oconee County, North Murray and Murray County arrive after failing to qualify a year ago.

Oglethorpe County entered last year’s championships as a No. 2 seed and celebrated the program’s first-ever wrestling state title with a dramatic 38-29 win over Dade County in the finals. The Patriots are back to defend their crown after a dominating run in the prelims that included a 71-6 win over Coosa and an 80-0 win over Putnam County.

Oglethorpe County’s next opponent will be Pepperell, which last hoisted a wrestling state title in 1975.

In Class A, Commerce had won six-straight state titles leading up to Trion’s victory in 2020 and Mt. Pisgah’s triumph at last year’s duals. Trion’s state title was its first since the 1994 traditional title, while Mt. Pisgah’s run to the title last season was its first-ever crown. Now, the question remains if another program can claim a historic first-ever dual title this year or if this is the year that Commerce or Class A newcomer Social Circle regains its championship grasp. Social Circle entered Class A last year, following a run in Class 2A that included five-straight state titles (2015-19). Landmark Christian, Charlton County, Screven County and St. AnnePacelli are also heading into the championships following impressive performances in the prelims.
