RECORD-BREAKING NUMBER OF PROSPECTS HEADLINE THIS YEAR’S CLASSIC

ompetition to recruit the state of Georgia continues to grow. The Peach State has been a C trusted destination for recruiters for decades and

the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic has represented Georgia’s brand of football for 23 years. There is no better way for a prospect to burst onto the scene or to start a football season than a breakout performance in the Corky Kell Classic. With so many talented athletes competing on the field each game, it gives every player an opportunity to go against the best competition on the biggest stage.

Looking back at the amount of college signees that played in the Classic the past couple years shows why so many college coaches keep coming back to the sidelines each year. In 2012, the event featured the most major college signees in Classic history with names like Robert Nkemdiche (Ole Miss), Tyren Jones (Alabama), Brandon Kublanow (Georgia) and Bryce Ramsey (Georgia) headlining the action.

McEachern is this year’s host and the Indians will look to defend their home turf with one of the most talented rosters in the state. Offensive tackle Chuma Edoga is committed to Southern California and running back Taj Griffin is a fivestar player committed to Oregon. Griffin is one of the fastest players in the country and can sprint his way to touchdowns in the return game and in a variety of ways out of the backfield. Edoga is one of the most athletic offensive linemen in the nation and his skillset is already polished. The college-ready lineman possesses a huge wingspan with the power and speed that make him impenetrable.

Wideout T.J. Rahming is explosive after the catch and can break defenders off with his double-moves. Rahming is committed to Duke and guard Chandler Jones has already committed to Louisville. Rahming makes the most of his 5-foot-

9 frame. He hauled in 54 receptions for 1,054 yards and 13 touchdowns last season.

The underclassmen stars for the Indians are junior defensive tackle Julian Rochester and sophomore quarterback Bailey Hockman. Rochester is one of the highest-rated 2016 prospects in the country for the 2016 class and he totaled 11 sacks and 136 total tackles last season as a sophomore. Hockman, who led the Indians to three playoff wins as a freshman last year, was named to the CBS MaxPreps AllAmerican preseason team for the Class of 2017.

Clemson-commit and consensus five-star offensive tackle Mitch Hyatt and a bevy of skill players lead North Gwinnett. Wideout Almonzo Brown is narrowing down offers from Florida, Georgia Tech and Kansas State, among others, and Daniel Imatorbhebhe is a 6-foot-4 target who is already committed to Missouri.

Tucker is a hotbed for producing college talent and is headlined by defensive lineman Jonathan Ledbetter, who recently spurned Nick Saban and Alabama for the Georgia Bulldogs. Outside linebacker Elijah Sullivan is an Auburn-commit and Sandy Creek-transfer Delvin Weems is an allpurpose back who is pledged to Marshall.

Weems’ former running mate at Sandy Creek, Eric Swinney, is committed to Ole Miss and there are a few undecided running backs that are receiving plenty of collegiate fan mail. Brookwood’s Jesse Brown, Colquitt County’s Sihiem King and Mill Creek’s Jonathan Hawkins have seen interest spike after their junior seasons.

Archer has a championship-caliber quarterback returning under center with Gabe Tiller. Tiller’s top playmakers will be running back Dylan Singleton, tight end Connor Redmond and rising junior Kyle Davis. Singleton is a composite four-star junior with offers from Duke and South Carolina that will play running back and defensive back. Redmond is a 6-foot-4 tight end committed to South Carolina and Kyle Davis is a 6-foot- 3, 220-pound junior also committed to the Gamecocks.

Some of the top defensive prospects taking the field will be Colquitt County linebacker Quintin Hampton (UCF), Carrollton cornerback Dante Wigley (Georgia Tech), Brookwood linebacker Chase Middleton (Georgia State) and Sandy Creek defensive ends Javonte Lain (Old Dominion) and Trent Sellers (Georgia Tech). Cincinnaticommit Joshua Norwood leads Valdosta’s ballhawking secondary.

Appalachian State-commit Daniel David quarterbacks the high-powered Mill Creek offense and one of the state’s largest offensive lines powers it. Auburn-commit Kaleb Kim (6-4, 285 pounds), Middle Tennessee State-commit Josh Fannin (6-3, 300), Chad Walker (6-3, 285) and Bobby Klemm (6-5, 310) are the starters on the line.

With the expansion to two days, this year’s Classic is set to feature the most college talent in event history.

reekview has compiled a 56-28 record in its program’s short existence, including an 8-3 finish last year before falling 34-33 to East Paulding in the opening round of the playoffs.

Creekview head coach Terry Crowder led Chattahoochee to the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic in 2012 and will lead the Grizzlies into the event in his second season at the Cherokee County school. After a successful nine-year tenure at Chattahoochee that included a state title in 2010, Crowder led the Grizzlies to a perfect 5-0 record in the region and a second consecutive state playoff appearance.

The gang from Owens Store Road is back at it again, looking to make it three straight trips behind the arm of rising junior Kyle Wilkie. Creekview’s signal-caller threw for 2,309 yards and 23 touchdowns with just eight interceptions last year. His favorite target, Connor Dulmage, has graduated with 12 of last year’s receiving touchdowns. Chandler Wold returns as a senior leader that caught 571 yards worth of passes his junior season, but he will step into the H-back role this year. Dawson Ewers, Chris Reddick and Trey Peppers will lead this year’s receiving targets.

On the defensive side of the ball, Ewers will patrol the secondary along with Wold. Both defensive backs collected five interceptions last year. Ewers is a threat when he gets his hands on the football and led the team with 423 return yards (30.21 yards per return) last season, including a 97-yard touchdown. Reddick roams the

core Atlanta preseason Class AAAAAA No. 1 Archer faces a Class AAAA Sandy Creek program in the backend of the Day 1 double-header.

Sandy Creek has played in a national spotlight for years whereas the young Archer program looks to be building a foundation capable of a championship-level of success in the not-so-distant future.

Not many teams in the state are riding more momentum into 2014 than Archer. Like North Paulding, the Tigers finished with a school-record 11 wins last season. They were the only undefeated team in Georgia’s highest classification heading into the playoffs and fell short to state runner-up North Gwinnett 34-32 in a second-round heartbreaker that easily could have been theirs.

Last season ended in disappointment, but it was also assurance for what the program would be capable of this season. With tons of returning starters and the school’s first playoff victory, Archer displayed its talent throughout the offseason. The Tigers claimed the inaugural Corky Kell Classic 7-on-7 tournament this past June as quarterback Gabe Tiller put on a show.

The 6-foot tall passer is athletic, smart with the football, and has incredible field awareness.

Tiller’s ability to improvise and make plays suits an offense with plenty of options to get the football to. His top playmakers will be running back Dylan Singleton, tight end Connor Redmond and rising junior Kyle Davis. These three playmakers

secondary and is an active tackler that posted 53 total takedowns last season.

Up front, the defense will be missing Joseph Sorrentino, who not only led the team in sacks (four) and tackles for loss (14), but also finished his prep career as a wrestler with a 55-0 record and a state champion. He was named Cherokee Tribune Male Athlete of the Year for his work on the mat and on the gridiron and was a vocal presence and leader on last year’s squad.

North Paulding moves up to Class AAAAAA fresh off its school-record 11-win season in 2013.

Scott Jones took over the North Paulding program in 2012 and is entering his 18th season as a head coach after spending the bulk of his career at South Cobb and Kennesaw Mountain

This young North Paulding football program has taken strides under Jones’ two-year reign, with a 19-6 record. This year’s jump into Class AAAAAA could make this Jones’ toughest year at North Paulding. The Wolfpack had to fill a lot of holes this offseason.

Breakout star Chase Noonan made a name for himself last year throwing for 2,600 yards and 30 touchdowns with just three interceptions.

Noonan was named honorable mention all-star by both the Associated Press and the AJC. Offensive lineman Cooper Corley was named firstteam all-state by both the AJC and AP and decided to continue his playing career at Cumberland University.

Noonan and Corley have graduated along

with weapons Corn Collins (1,349 yards rushing, 16 TDs) and Mac Seagle (822 yards receiving, 10 TDs). Collins signed with Georgia Southern. Kyle Banks will take over the quarterbacking duties this year as the junior passer completed 16-of-27 attempts for 225 yards, five touchdowns and one interception last season. Brad Swan and Justin Chauvin earned the starting receiving roles this offseason and Dylan Autenrieth will be used in the slot. Chauvin saw action as a freshman last season and hauled in three catches for 37 yards and his first varsity touchdown.

The hard-hitting defense will also be affected with the departure of Jack Senkowitz (144 tackles) and Jace White (139 tackles). Dale Craig will start at middle linebacker and the underclassman posted 55 total tackles and nine tackles for loss during his a breakout 2013 sophomore season. Junior Jacob Daniel brings experience back to the secondary and saw action in 11 games last season.

Jones already has experience coaching in Georgia’s highest classification after his five years at South Cobb and most recently his 10-year tenure at Kennesaw Mountain. The Mustangs will become a region foe to Jones and North Paulding this year as they sit in a deep Region 4-AAAAAA with Harrison, Hillgrove, Marietta, McEachern and North Cobb.

can get Archer down the field in a hurry and the chemistry is there with Tiller.

Defensively, Singleton can step into the secondary and linebackers Quinn Miller and Dillon Bliss lead an improved unit that had some difficulties getting off the field on third downs last year.

Cal Burton, Kobe Smith and Robbie Armstrong make up the trenches on the defensive side.

Class AAAA Sandy Creek is up for a challenge matching the size and depth of Archer, but there is plenty of talent dotting the Patriots’ roster. Sandy Creek won back-to-back state titles in 2009-2010 and returned to the podium in 2012 with a perfect 15-0 season, including a 45-10 rout over Ridgeland in the state championship.

The 2012 campaign was so dominant that the Patriots managed to outscore their final six opponents 266-43. The only game that was even within two touchdowns was a 31-20 victory over Burke County in the quarterfinals. The 15 victories in 2012 averaged out to a 35-point average margin of victory.

Last season, the Patriots dominated once again, but finally met their match with eventual state champion Griffin in the quarterfinals. The Bears upset Sandy Creek and snapped the Patriots’ streak of 27 games without a loss. Sandy Creek lost several starters off last year’s team including quarterback Cole Garvin (Marshall) and wide receiver Demarre Kitt (Clemson) who were a part of the school’s last two state champion-

ships. Detroit Lions All-Pro and record-setting receiver Calvin Johnson put Sandy Creek on the map and the school’s traditionally potent passing attack will see new faces this year.

Trey Walker steps in at quarterback after competing 8-of-21 passes last season for 161 yards and two touchdowns. Christian Branch, Korey Banks and tight end Sam Beard are penned as the starting receiving targets and Banks led with 24 catches for 200 yards and a touchdown last year.

The ground game will be strong with this year’s team, but it will be built a lot different than the past two seasons. Eric Swinney and Delvin Weems were a two-headed monster in the backfield together, with both backs rushing for more than 2,000 yards apiece. Swinney will have to do it alone this year as Weems packed up and transferred to Tucker. The result could be a huge senior year for Swinney, an Ole Miss commitment.

Swinney was good for 24 rushing touchdowns and four receiving touchdowns last season with a team-high 1,289 yards. Weems finished with 1,233 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns on 136 attempts last year.

On defense, pass rusher Trent Sellers is already committed to Georgia Tech and stands 6-foot-3, 230 pounds. His teammate Javonte Lain is pledged to Old Dominion and is another bigbodied 6-foot-3 force on the edge. Nose guard Al Cooper led the team with 8.5 sacks in 2013.

he opening game of Saturday’s action sets up a cross-classification matchup filled with storylines. Carrollton, a program that played its first football season in 1920, is facing Cobb County’s Kell High School for the first time in school history. Kell, which opened its first-ever season in 2003, has established itself as one of the most consistent programs in the state. The Longhorns have won 44 games the past four years under coach Derek Cook and come off a school-record 13-1 season.

Despite the two teams never meeting before, the programs are familiar with one another. Carrollton coach Ed Dudley was hired this offseason after leading Ware County for the past five years.

Before taking the job at Ware County, Dudley coached down the street from Kell at Walton for 14 years. During his final season with the Raiders (2008), Dudley beat Cook and the Longhorns 17-9. New Carrollton offensive coordinator Tripp Allen led the Walton offense for 15 seasons and is a 3-time Cobb County Offensive Coach of the Year (2003, 2007, 2011).

Kell takes pride in playing guys on both sides of the football and the Horns are able to maximize the strengths of multiple players at a time.

With the most productive players getting time on both sides of the football, Kell will often have to replace huge fractions of their production season to season. Finding leadership has been the key to maintaining success and this year the Longhorns must replace four-year starter Taylor Henkle as

well as three-year starters Julian Burris, Jay Moxey, Ethan Elliott and Nathan Waller. Also gone are Austin Meaut, Errol Breaux and Donnell Greene.

Quarterback Cameron Rosendahl is set for a key role after stepping into the starting job last year when then-senior Matthew McGuigan suffered injuries. Rosendahl’s performance and leadership during 2013 gave Cook the confidence to rotate his quarterbacks deep into the playoffs even as McGuigan was back and healthy. Bryson Armstrong, Derrick White and Emmanuel Davis are top targets at receiver and Evan Carnes will get the nod at tight end. Armstrong caught 18 passes last year for 251 yards and four touchdowns while leading the Kell defense. Armstrong notched 145 combined tackles, 10 tackles for loss, seven pass breakups and three interceptions last season.

The Longhorns can run the football and they’ve thrived in this phase of the game since the days of former Georgia Tech running back and current Arizona Cardinal Jonathan Dwyer.

Their veer attack will chip away at defenses to set up long passing plays aimed to get the ball in the hands of their big-play guys.

Itabari Mason is a physical runner with plenty of experience and proven durability. Mason rushed for 433 yards and six touchdowns last season on just 51 carries and he’ll join Ivan Wall and fullback Michael McCain in the backfield.

Carrollton is one of the most storied and successful programs in the nation with a 632-213-28

(.740) all-time record and seven state championships and was a win away from claiming the Class AAAA state crown in 2013. The Trojans finished 13-2 with a loss to Griffin in the state championship. Griffin was the same team that ousted Kell in the semifinals.

Dudley beat out more than 200 applicants for the Carrollton job this year and his familiarity with the program ultimately sealed the deal.

Dudley last coached at Carrollton in 1988-91 as the defensive coordinator and his defenses held 35 opponents to single digits, including 21 shutouts during those four seasons.

The Trojans are traditionally built to run the football and they will remain a ground-andpound offense while using no-huddle and an uptempo pace to keep defenses guessing.

On Carrollton’s defensive side of the ball, Georgia Tech-commit Dante Wigley is a lockdown corner at 6-foot-1, 183-pounds. Wigley will also step in as a running back and wide receiver and is one of the team’s top playmakers.

Jarvis Terrell rushed for 80.1 yards per game last season with a team-high 17 rushing touchdowns and will lead the backfield as a junior this season. In the Trojans’ scrimmage against West Forsyth, Terrell scored Carrollton’s first touchdown on a 92-yard screen pass. He will be active in the passing game.

After giving up 31, 27, 50 and 45 points in four losses last season, Mill Creek brought in Bill Stewart to coordinate the defense. Stewart was Parkview’s defensive guru from 2003-2005 when the Panthers made two quarterfinals and one finals appearance in the playoffs. Stewart then took over as head coach at Etowah for six seasons. This is Mill Creek’s first-ever appearance in the Classic.

Colquitt County hired coach Rush Propst in 2008 with the idea of becoming a consistent contender in not only Region 1, but also the state playoffs. The former reality television protagonist has obliged. In just his second year, Propst led the Packers to an 11-3 record and a berth in the state semifinals, the program’s first 10-pluswin season since 1999. Since, the Packers have become as much of a staple in late November as Thanksgiving. Colquitt made it to the state finals in 2010, then made the semifinals each year from 2011-2013.

Running back Sihiem King (1,439 yards, 17 touchdowns in 2013) returns to an offense that lost quarterback Daniel Mobley, offensive lineman Gabe Mobley (Georgia State) and wide receiver Todd Boyd (Georgia State), among others.

The defense lost lineman Jamiyus Pittman (UCF), defensive back C.J. Johnson (South Alabama) and tackle Mike Parrish. Linebacker Quintin Hampton, wide receiver Kiel Pollard (48 catches, 813 yards in 2013) and King will lead this year’s

squad, which went 11-3 last year including a 21-6 win over Grayson in the Corky Kell Classic. The Packers narrowly lost to eventual state champion Norcross 14-9 in the 2013 state semifinals.

Over the summer, the Packers won a 7-on7 tournament in Prattville, Ala. after going 12-1.

Quarterback Chase Parrish got the start in the tournament and the junior will be the Packers’ quarterback in 2014.

Colquitt’s defense could be one of its best in program history, as the unit held Coffee without an offensive touchdown in a recent scrimmage.

The secondary played a large part in the Packers’ 7-on-7 championship and continued its excellent play against Coffee when Landon Scott returned an interception for a touchdown.

This is the Packers’ sixth appearance in the Classic. Propst is 1-1 in the event with the Packers beating Grayson in 2013 and losing to North Gwinnett in 2012.

Colquitt County has one state title to its credit. In 1994, the Packers went 15-0 and beat Valdosta in the finals to claim its lone state crown. Known as Moultrie until 1977, Colquitt has been home to one of the power programs of Region 1 for decades. Former Georgia coach Ray Goff, defensive end Antonio Edwards (Valdosta State, then Seahawks, Giants, Falcons, Panthers) and wide receiver Nate Lewis (Georgia, then Chargers, Bears) each wore the gold and black of Colquitt County.

egion 1 teams have had some memorable battles with programs from Gwinnett County over the past 25 years. Colquitt County-Mill Creek promises to be another. The Packers are the only Region 1 program Mill Creek has faced in its 10-year history, a 27-14 Colquitt win in the 2010 state quarterfinals.

Coach Shannon Jarvis is the lone head coach in Mill Creek program history. He has guided the Hawks to three playoff appearances in 10 years of existence, including quarterfinals berths in 2010 and 2012. The Hawks may well have been the best team in the state last season to not make the postseason. Jarvis’ team went 6-4 in Region 7, arguably the toughest in the entire state. The Hawks dominated Brookwood and Dacula in the first two games of the season, teams that would each go on to playoffs berths later in the season.

However, Mill Creek fell in four region games, all competitive affairs that included a one-point loss to Peachtree Ridge and a three-point defeat to eventual state finalist North Gwinnett.

The Hawks boast one of the best offensive lines in recent GHSA history. The unit includes guard Josh Fannin (MTSU commit), tackle Kaleb Kim (Auburn), guard Chad Walker and tackle Bobby Flemm, who each started in 2013. Only center Kyle Stephenson graduated from last year’s starting offensive line. Although leading rushers Devozea Felton and Carter Governale have each departed from last year’s potent backfield, quarterback Daniel David (Appalachian State) and

orth vs. South is what Georgia high school football is all about. The traditional powers of South Georgia and metro Atlanta’s powerhouses have been battling for bragging rights for decades and, when they meet, the stage is always set high.

Brookwood and Valdosta squared off for the first time in 1996 at the Corky Kell Classic. Valdosta took a 31-28 victory, but the Broncos had an answer later that season that would initiate this rivalry. That same 1996 season, Brookwood beat Lowndes in the semifinals and earned a rematch with the Wildcats that would take place at Valdosta for the state championship. Brookwood let an early lead slip away but pulled away for the 4224 win, stamping the Broncos first-ever state title and leaving Valdosta stunned on its home turf.

The Wildcats answered back in 1998 and knocked Brookwood out of the playoffs in the semifinals en route to their 24th state title. Eight years separated the next time the teams would meet and Brookwood was able to take a 3-2 series lead with Valdosta after a 9-7 win in 2006 and 37-6 victory in 2007.

Brookwood has played in every Corky Kell Classic and is led by Mark Crews, who will be entering his 13th year with the program. Under Crews, the Broncos have qualified for the state playoffs every year. Crews has accumulated a record of 110-40 with one state championship (2010). Last season, Brookwood overcame an

wo of metro Atlanta’s top programs in recent years butt heads in Game 4 on Saturday. No strangers to success, the two powers have combined to win four state titles since 2008. Norcross has not had a losing season since 1998 and has made the playoffs in eight of the past nine years while Tucker has made the playoffs every year since 2006 and has not had a losing season since 1991.

Coach Keith Maloof’s Blue Devils are the glamor team in the state heading into 2014 as the Gwinnett County program has won the last two state championships in Georgia’s largest classification. The 2013 team dropped two of their first three games of the season, 55-0 to eventualnational champion Booker T. Washington (Fla.) and 36-17 North Gwinnett, then ran the table and defended their 2012 title with a 31-14 win in a revenge game over the aforementioned Bulldogs.

However, last year’s squad graduated some 62 seniors, including quarterback A.J. Bush (Nebraska), wide receiver/kick returner Myles Autry, defensive end Lorenzo Carter (Georgia) and linebacker Kevin Mouton (Cincinnati) among several other key contributors.

Griffin Barker and Jacob Gassert battled in the offseason for the start at quarterback for the Blue Devils after backing up Bush in 2013. A decision had not yet been made as of press time.

Gassert was the only quarterback aside from Bush to see playing time last season, and he had a mere five passing attempts for 16 yards. D’Andre

onslaught of injuries and battled to a 6-6 record.

Junior Jesse Brown ran for 1,439 yards and 13 touchdowns after he had originally begun the season penciled in as a defensive back. Brown’s older brother Josh, who was the starting running back, went down with a season-ending knee injury in the season-opener and it called for the younger Brown to lead the offense. Brown can be a receiving threat out of the backfield and took 14 receptions last year for 180 yards (12.86 yards per catch).

Junior Will McCullough steps in at quarterback and has a solid corps of receivers with Ricky Sharma and Dorian Miles. Backing up McCullough is 6-foot-4 sophomore Tanner Winskie. Neither quarterback saw varsity action last year and an underclassman passer making a debut against the hungry Valdosta defense will be a test.

The Broncos’ defense will have recent Georgia State commitment Chase Middleton to rely upon. Middleton had a good season last year collecting 64 tackles and three sacks. His leadership will be needed along with the other returning starters if Crews’ boys want to make it 13 straight state playoff appearances.

The words “high school football” and “Valdosta” run synonymous in Georgia. The program has built the winningest high school team in the entire nation with an overall record of 858-21534, and is arguably the most historic program in

the country. The Wildcats’ six national titles, 24 state titles and 35 region championships speak volumes, but statewide competition has leveled out the Wildcats’ reign the past several years.

Head coach Rance Gillespie will be entering his fifth season with the team. The former Georgia Bulldog defensive back started his tenure with the Wildcats with a bang going 11-2, but fell 22-0 to Grayson in the quarterfinals. In 2011, the Wildcats were shocked in the first round by Newnan 17-7.

The Wildcats’ backfield averaged 190 rushing yards per game last season as Nelson Herring paced the attack. With Nelson graduated, junior Tim Griffin will take a lot more carries this season.

The defense will likely lead this team early and they are once again a very fast and hard-hitting group. Senior defensive backs Tre Barrett and Josh Norwood are ball-hawking playmakers that will control the secondary this season.

Julian Fraser is a productive pass rusher on the weak-side of Valdosta’s four-man front and his pressure last season earned him a trip to the Elite Junior Classic All-Star game this past December and helped Valdosta allow just 93 passing yards per game on defense.

Year 5 is a promising one for Gillespie and the Wildcats, who will look to add a 25th state title to their resume.

Plantin will anchor an offensive line that lost every other starter off last year’s squad. Junior running back Jamir Billings will play a big part in the running game and senior Jared Pinkney (seven catches, 80 yards last year) will head a young corps of receivers.

The defense will be guided by senior end Jean-Baptiste Kouassi, who made 106 tackles last year with nine sacks, and senior tackle Dorian Kithcart, who had 78 tackles and 38 tackles-for-loss. Despite losing a bevy of seniors, the Blue Devils dressed out more than 200 players for summer workouts. In fact, Maloof will start nine seniors on defense and five on offense.

The two state championships are the only ones in school history for a program that was up and down for decades prior to Maloof’s arrival in 1999. This will be Norcross’ third appearance in the Classic after losing games in 2008 and 2009.

Tucker won state titles in 2008 and 2011 under coach Franklin Stephens, and made it back to the finals last season under coach Bryan Lamar.

The Tigers have won 10 games or more 15 times since 1994 and 13 or more five times in the past seven years. Tucker’s corner of DeKalb County has been a regular stop for college recruiters from all over the nation.

The Tigers’ defense alone is chock full of Division 1 college prospects this season. Multiple seniors are being heavily recruited, including defensive end Jonathan Ledbetter, who was hotly pursued by Alabama and committed to the

Tide before recently flipping to Georgia. Several top programs are recruiting defensive back Duke Shelley, including Clemson, Georgia Tech, Tennessee and Wisconsin. Linebacker Elijah Sullivan is committed to Auburn while linebacker Maurice Williams and defensive back Dre Jackson have received serious attention from colleges.

Offensively, Tucker lost three of its top four rushers, including quarterback Joseph Farrar (Furman), running back Dominick Sanders (Georgia) and Devin Towns (Wingate). However, Sullivan doubles as a fullback when he isn’t playing linebacker. He rushed for 756 yards and 11 scores last season. Delvin Weems, who transferred in from Sandy Creek, will get the start at running back in tonight’s game. Junior Garrett Rigby will start at quarterback for the Tigers in a backfield that features three senior backs (Sullivan, Weems and Raquan Rush). Ledbetter will get the start at tight end.

This will be the Tigers’ first-ever appearance in the Classic.

There is a significant Alabama flavor on Tucker’s coaching staff, as offensive coordinator Toderick Malone and nose guards coach Albert Means each played for the Tide.

Norcross staff is also dotted with former college players including Jeremy Muyres (Parkview, then Georgia Tech), Marcus Jackson (Norcross, then Georgia) and Reggie Stancil (Colquitt County, then Jacksonville State).

he 2013 semifinals marked the first time that North Gwinnett and McEachern have met on the gridiron. McEachern tied the game at 14 with a Bailey Hockman pass to Trey Scott, but visiting North Gwinnett’s passing attack paired with the polished running ability of C.J. Leggett was too much for the Indians to handle. Leggett, now with Georgia Tech, ran wild for 292 yards and a pair of touchdowns and North Gwinnett stamped its ticket to the Dome with a 27-21 win.

McEachern returned the majority of last year’s squad and, as a result, the Indians are at the top of some Class AAAAAA polls heading into the season. Head coach Kyle Hockman has racked up 49 wins in the past five seasons and his team has made it out of the first round of the playoffs in the past four seasons. A state championship has been on the bulletin board every year for the Cobb County powerhouse and this year the Indians certainly have the pieces.

Leading the offense will be Hockman, a rising sophomore that came to the rescue last season after Ty Clemons went down with an injury and led McEachern to three playoff victories.

This offseason, CBS honored the 6-foot2 passer by naming him to the CBS MaxPreps Preseason Sophomore All-American Team. In his first-ever start last year, Hockman came in and threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns to lead McEachern in its 36-21 victory over Newton. Hockman’s season statistics included 1,096 passing yards and 11 touchdowns in limited ac-

tion, almost all of which came in the playoffs.

A contributing factor to Hockman’s success last year was the amount playmakers surrounding the young quarterback. Upfront, tackle Chuma Edoga is a University of Southern California commit and without question one of the most skilled offensive linemen in the country. Edoga has a wingspan that can eat up any defender and he’ll drive opponents completely out of the play with his combination of speed and power.

Chandler Jones is another athletic lineman that has recently committed to Louisville.

In the backfield is one of the fastest players in the nation in five-star running back Taj Griffin and, at wideout, T.J. Rahming is returning starter that committed to Duke in June.

On defense, junior Julian Rochester is the player to watch. The 6-foot-5, 280-pound defensive tackle is one of the top rated prospects in the Class of 2016 and will lead a defensive line that lost pass rush specialists Henry Famurewa (Louisville) and McKenzie Billingslea.

North Gwinnett has won double-digit games in each of the eight seasons under coach Bob Sphire while posting an incredible 91-15 record. Last year’s Bulldogs followed a potent offense all the way to the Class AAAAAA state title. North Gwinnett is still searching for the state crown and saw a 14-0 lead disappear in the state title game in December as Norcross ran away with 31 unanswered points.

Mitch Hyatt is a Clemson commit and five-

star offensive tackle that anchors a young offensive line.

Plenty of talent returns to the receiving corps despite the loss of Nate Brown and Caleb Scott. Brown (Missouri) and Scott (Vanderbilt) combined for 133 receptions, 2,098 yards and 31 touchdowns last season.

Senior receivers Almonzo Brown and Daniel Imatorbhebhe are big, physical targets that will be able to step right into the No. 1 and No. 2 roles. Quarterback John Urzua started last season when Hayden Sphire suffered an injury.

Sphire had an incredible senior season with 190of-325 passing for 2,639 yards, 34 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Urzua completed 48 of 74 passes for 660 yards with six touchdowns and one interception in limited action. Expect the Bulldogs to continue taking shots downfield to their big-bodied receivers.

Urzua may rotate with transfer Ayinde Russell, who led Mays into the playoffs last season.

Russell is an athletic dual-threat passer who threw for 1,698 yards and 15 touchdowns last season while adding 356 yards and five more scores on the ground for the Raiders.

Seniors Avery Elford and Anree SaintAmour are the leaders on defense. Saint-Amour appeared in the Elite Junior Classic all-star game this past December as a standout defensive end and Elford will lead the linebacking corps this year as one of the team’s top tacklers.
