2009 U.S. ARMY/CORKY KELL CLASSIC

SCORE ATLANTA I 03CKC

Former Brookwood head coach, AD keeps growing, improving yearly showcase ans of Georgia High School football are treated every year to four incredible games to kick off the season at the Corky Kell Classic. The Classic, which began in 1992, matches up some of the best teams in the state inside the Georgia Dome, a place that all eight teams hope to finish their seasons. The event carries on today because of a promise Dave Hunter kept to Corky Kell, and Hunter says the event will continue as long as he has a say. In 1992, Kell, a former Wheeler head coach and then-Cobb County AD, came to Hunter, the football coach and AD at Brookwood at the time, with the idea to match up McEachern and Brookwood in a game to benefit Cobb and Gwinnett counties. The teams met at the Dome for the first football game ever held at the arena, with McEachern winning, 21-14. The two teams have been a part of the Classic ever since. When Kell fell ill in 1994, he asked Hunter to keep the event going, and Hunter spearheaded the 1995 Classic and took over after Kell passed away. The event has taken place in the Georgia Dome every year since 1992, save for one year when the Dome was booked for a convention and another year when part of the roof fell. The number of games that makes up the Corky Kell Classic increased from the original two to three, then to four, and eventually to five games before the timing was thrown off and it was scaled back to four games, which is what we have today. According to Hunter, the teams selected must be programs of quality but must also have strong character “in both team and community.” In addition to the gate, the schools also receive scholarship money from some private backers. Last year, the Kell Scholarship Fund awarded six scholarships, and over the course of the Classic’s history, over $60,000 has been awarded. Besides the money, however, the game gives the teams a measuring stick for their seasons.

F

ALL STARTED IN THE DOME … It was in the 1996 Kell Classic where Hunter believes his state title run began, despite a loss in the Dome. In a game that Hunter calls one of the two most important games to his program’s success, Valdosta rallied to beat Brookwood 31-28 in the closing seconds. Hunter and his players believed they should have won, and following a loss in the next game to Parkview, the Broncos ran off 13 straight wins to capture the 1996 Class AAAA state title, the largest classification at the time. Brookwood defeated both Parkview and Valdosta in rematches en route to the title, tagging the Wildcats 45-24 in the championship game. That team was one of Hunter’s “15 favorite teams,” as he puts it, but also the one he considered his most unselfish. “They played up to and met their potential,” Hunter says. The team featured Georgia’s defensive player of the year in defensive tackle Curt McGill and offensive player of the year in running back Paul Freeman. Freeman now runs a non-profit organization for handicapped children and adults, according to Hunter, and is a player that Hunter remembers fondly. In fact, at a recent Brookwood alumni golf event that featured nearly 60 former Broncos, Hunter remarked to his son, “I’ve done my job.” After 15 seasons as Brookwood’s coach and several more serving as the athletic director, Hunter is proud to have helped build relationships and helped the young men grow as individuals. “As a coach, it thrills me,” Hunter says. “You build Brookwood loyalty, but more importantly, teammate loyalty.” These teams helped Hunter achieve a 136-33 record with the Broncos. In 19 career seasons, Hunter posted a 176-52-1

record as he coached for four seasons with now-defunct Peachtree High School before coming to Brookwood in 1987. It was in Hunter’s first season with the Broncos when he believes he scored one of the biggest wins in Brookwood history, one that would set the tone for his career at his new school. That year, the Broncos ventured to Clarke Central and recorded the first victory ever for a Gwinnett County program over the Athens power. That Broncos team was led by Jason Elam, who has gone on to college and NFL fame and recently returned to his alma mater with the hometown Atlanta Falcons for their “Friday Night Lights” preseason intrasquad scrimmage several weeks ago. Hunter calls his kicker an “outstanding player and vocal leader” on his first Brookwood team. Elam was named to the all-state team in that 1987 season. Under Hunter, 23 Broncos would earn all-state honors, helping Brookwood to a level of success that few other schools have reached since. With Hunter in charge, the Broncos never posted a losing record and won at least 10 games nine times, with two nine-win seasons and two eight-win seasons. The Broncos made the playoffs 12 of Hunter’s 15 seasons and five more times while Hunter served as AD. Hunter posted four 13-win seasons, including three straight from 1996-98. The ‘97 and ‘98 seasons both saw the Broncos go undefeated in the regular season, only to fall in the state semifinals at the Georgia Dome.

ON THE FIELD IN ‘09 … This season, McEachern and Brookwood, the Classic’s two original teams, will battle once again in the Dome as part of the 2009 U.S. Army Corky Kell Classic. Hunter

was 6-4 in the Classic as a coach, but 0-2 against the Indians. The teams involved in the Classic are put on display for every fan to see, usually a week before the rest of the schedule kicks off. Throw in the fact that the games are played in the massive Georgia Dome and you have an event that every school wants to be involved in. While the idea may have been the brainchild of Corky Kell, and though its development was helped along greatly by former McEachern head coach Jimmy Dorsey (now the school’s AD), the event would not be what it is today without Hunter. So expect many more years of the Classic because of a promise that Hunter made to Kell 17 years ago, a promise which he has more than followed through on. Etowah vs. Starr’s Mill

Grayson vs. Camden County

11:45 a.m.

5:30 p.m.

Etowah worked the run game against Starr’s Mill in last year’s Kell Classic, with graduated senior RB Ryan Boykin leading the way. In just 17 carries he was able to gain a grand total of 277 yards and scored four touchdowns for the Eagles in their 47-24 win. Boykin’s scintillating performance would not have been possible, however, if it were not for the offensive line, which was comprised of many experienced seniors. Boykin is gone, but OL/DL Reid Webster, a Clemson commit, continues to pave the way for the running game. QB Braden Nolan will be in his first year as starter in the Eagles’ split-back veer offense, and CB/WR Taylor Majors will anchor the defensive backfield. The Eagles will try to kickstart their season like they did last year, when they won nine games and a region championship. Starr’s Mill is looking for improvement after two uncharacteristic down seasons. Head coach Mike Earwood will look to tighten up the defense in the ’09 version of the Classic. Although Starr’s Mill is young and inexperienced with nine juniors to start on offense this year, the blend of talent seems promising. The Panthers look toward upcoming players such as QB Adam Holley, RB Zach Laskey and WR Jeffery Greene in their first year on varsity to bring the team out of its slump. Also watch for DE Ofumba Kamalu (47 tackles, one fumble recovery for TD), and CB/RB Trenton Edwards (400 yards rushing, three INTs, one returned for TD). The loss of LB Stephen Roberts (Middle Tennessee State) and punter Chris Ward (N.C. State) will hurt.

Over the last few years, the Grayson Rams have established themselves as one of the state’s top programs. Now they have their eyes on a state championship berth after an epic 13-10 double-overtime loss in the semifinals last season to eventual runner-up Peachtree Ridge. Senior QB Patrick Santry will take over the starting job, and will have a tough act to follow in Tyler Horne, an efficient signal caller that ran the Rams’ run-dominated offense to a T. The lines will be the strength of the team. DT Shawn Green is committed to Georgia Tech, while DE Joseph Champaign is a sack machine off the edge. Also on defense, S Kori Gaines is a BYU commit. Offensively, 5-foot-3 RB Ean Pemberton makes the Rams go, as he rushed for 1,950 yards and 14 TDs last season. Nobody had the depth of talent and size that Camden County fielded last season. The defending Class 5A state champions return only seven total starters, but should still be one of the top teams in the state. DE Matt Jackson is back, and led the team in tackles and sacks last season. The rest of the defense is solid, with LB Glenn Mack patrolling behind a stout line. On offense, the Wildcats graduate steady QB Christian Milstead (signed with Navy) and Greg Baker at running back. But Aundre Johnson and Ean Days were major contributors at the running back position last season and should keep that unit strong. Grayson will provide an important early-season test for the Wildcats, who will find out if the younger talent is ready to step up and play at a championship level.

Brookwood vs. McEachern

Norcross vs. Walton

2:30 p.m.

8:30 p.m. Last year, Norcross reached the second round of the state playoffs only to lose to the surprising Woodstock Wolverines, 14-10. Gone from last year’s Norcross team is QB Charles King, WR/DB Prince Kent and RB D.J. Adams, players who made the offense go. But the Blue Devils still have talented players, and it starts with wide receivers Geremy Davis and Arius Wright. Davis had three TD receptions last year and Wright has been clocked at a 4.3 in the 40-yard dash. Junior QB Matt Poole will take over the duties under center, and four starters return on the offensive line. The Blue Devils will have another weapon this season, as top RB Delino DeShields comes into the mix as a transfer from Woodward Academy. On defense, Wright will also patrol the secondary, where he was an all-region player last year. Like Norcross, Walton is also coming off a disappointing loss to Woodstock, getting bounced by the Wolverines in the first round of the playoffs last season. And like the Blue Devils, the Raiders also lose their starting quarterback (Ray Rayburn), leading rusher (Michael Boydston) and leading receiver (Price Garrett) due to graduation. But the loss that hurts the most is that of senior DE/RB Brandon Burrows, who suffered a season-ending injury in the spring. DT Kyle Woestmann will be leading a hard-nosed defense along with DB Jacob Blaeser and DL Chris Boardman. On offense, QB Bradley Kilborn will be the starter and will have RB Kyle Vorster and RB Rodney Kazibwe to help him execute Walton’s West Coast offense. WR Patrick Cosgrove will look to fill Price Garrett’s shoes this year.

Brookwood head coach Mark Crews would like a better start to 2009 than he got from his team last season. The Broncos dropped their first two games, including a 14-9 loss to Walton in last year’s Classic. Brookwood returns seven starters and should be improved from ‘08. QB Ben McLane will lead the offense, but it is the defense that should be the team’s strength, led by S Nick Moore and LB David Cooper. This experienced unit should help the Broncos finish games stronger than they did last year, when they lost three games by a touchdown or less. After losses to county rivals Grayson and Parkview put the Broncos in third place in Region 8, Brookwood will be looking to reclaim a top-two seed in ‘09. For McEachern head coach Kyle Hockman, 2009 is about getting the Indians to the playoffs, somewhere they haven’t been since 2005. The McEachern offense will lean on star RB Rajaan Bennett again, who rushed for over 1,000 yards and 12 TDs in 2008 on only 130 carries. The Indians are very strong defensively, with 8 starters back. CB DeMarius Matthews is a Division 1 prospect whom opposing quarterbacks would be wise to not throw at. DL Tavontae Drake anchors a veteran front. The key for the Indians is developing a passing game to keep defenses honest after losing last year’s starting QB, Daniel King. If they can do that, with this defense, a playoff berth is a legit possibility.
