ers collide at Mercer University on August 18.

Houston County meets Mary Persons at 5:45 P.M. The Bears boast senior gunslinger Jake Fromm (UGA) under center, the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s 2015 Class AAAAA Offensive Player of the Year. Fromm threw for 4,099 yards and 36 touchdowns last year, but the Mary Persons defense will be up to the task led by fourstar senior defensive end Malik Herring.

The 8:30 P.M. timeslot at Five Star Stadium features burgeoning powerhouse Jones County and Lee County, who looks to rebound from a playoff-less 6-4 season. Senior quarterback Bradley Hunnicutt threw for 2,463 yards and 21 touchdowns, while tossing just three interceptions for Jones County. Senior Nick Singleton was his favorite target, catching 70 passes for

905 yards. The Trojans will lean on a defense powered by TJ Harris and Tory Carter.

MEET ME AT MCEACHERN

On Friday, the actions shifts to McEachern’s Walter H. Cantrell Stadium, as state championship runner-ups Buford and Roswell do battle at 5:30 P.M. followed by Hillgrove vs. South Forsyth at 8:45.

Buford was denied a four-peat as state champions when Cartersville shut the Wolves out for the first time since 2010, 10-0, in the Class AAAA title game. Twenty-two seniors graduate from last year’s team but brothers Mic (East Carolina) and T.D. (Georgia Tech) Roof return for their final season. Juniors Christian Turner and Anthony Grant lead a dominant run game that averaged 254.1 yards per game.

Roswell, ranked No. 7 in the nation by MaxPreps, showcases Virginia Tech commit Malik

Willis, who takes over the reins at quarterback after playing all over the field at Westlake the past two seasons. The defense stars a ballhawking secondary energized by Clemson commit LeAnthony Williams Jr., Xavier McKinney and Justus Harris.

Hillgrove turns to junior quarterback Hunter Arters on offense with senior linebacker Kelechi Kagha stabilizing the defense.

South Forsyth’s Davis Shanley enters his senior season with momentum, as the play caller threw for 2,342 yards and 25 touchdowns while amassing 623 yards rushing. Top tackler Max Slott, who tallied 117 tackles as a junior linebacker, returns as well.

DOME SWEET DOME

The final edition of the Georgia Dome hosting the MetroPCS Corky Kell Classic begins at 9 A.M. with Kell facing Tucker. Samuel Bryant and Chris Broadwater are a lethal combination in the Tucker backfield. Tennessee commit Solon Page III powers the Kell defense after posting 110 tackles and 15 tackles for loss.

At 11:45 A.M., Brookwood and North Gwinnett kickoff their 2016 campaigns after both failed to reach the postseason. The Bulldogs should be much improved as junior quarterback Cade Fortin (Texas A&M) has emerged as a four-star prospect. Drew Jordan (Duke) and Dixon Yellot provide quarterback pressure along the defensive line.

Warner, a four-star linebacker, is a playmaking heavy hitter that collected 110 tackles in 2015.

Quarterback Baron Radcliff headlines Norcross’ offensive attack as the Blue Devils meet upstart Walton at 2:45 P.M. after the Raiders improved from 2-8 to 9-2 behind star quarterback-wide receiver duo Addison Shoup and sophomore Dominick Blaylock.

Two heavyweight Class AAAAAA state playoff rematches put a capper on the Corky Kell Classic as Mill Creek seeks revenge against Colquitt County at 5:45 P.M. and McEachern clashes with Archer at 8:45 P.M.

The Packers ended the Hawks’ perfect season in the semifinals, 52-31. Jay Saunders slides in to lead Colquitt County at quarterback his senior season. Five-star linebacker JJ Peterson enters his junior season and will try to become a three-time state champion. Mill Creek pitched six shutouts last year but only two defensive starters return headed by defensive back Jamar Hall.

Archer ended McEachern’s season 24-21 in the second round last year. Four-star quarterback Bailey Hockman (FSU) looks to rebound from a subpar junior season which saw him throw for 2,118 yards, 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. The Tigers plan to counter with junior Dillon Waye under center while Quinn Miller anchors a young defense at linebacker.

The Houston County Bears come off a schoolrecord 11-win season which afforded HoCo Locos a trip to the quarterfinals where they fell to eventual Class AAAAA state champion Allatoona, 59-47.

The Bears are powered by four-star quarterback and reigning Atlanta Journal Constitution and Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year, Jake Fromm.

The senior gunslinger threw for 4,099 yards and 36 touchdowns while tossing just six interceptions. Fromm was an Alabama-commit before he changed his mind and elected to “Commit to the G” and suit up for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Coach Von Lassiter returns Fromm’s top two favorite targets, seniors Amari Colbert and Eli Watson. Both possess size outside and game-breaking abilities. Colbert, 6-foot-3, hauled in 44 receptions for 904 yards and nine touchdowns. Also a member of the basketball team, Colbert’s leaping ability lets him high-point balls and go over defenders for catches in traffic. Watson, 6-foot-2, caught 32 passes for 771 yards and eight touchdowns.

ones County head coach Justin Rogers finished his second season at the helm with a 9-2 record and a second consecutive playoff birth. The Greyhounds lost in the first round of the state playoffs to Class AAAAA runner-up Glynn Academy 28-22. With a leading cast of returning players, the Greyhounds have the Corky Kell Classic and a trip to Washington County to prepare for a nine-team race for the Region 4-AAAAA crown.

Jones County’s last region title came in 2001.

Rogers was previously the offensive coordinator for Griffin High School during its 2013 championship run. Since becoming head coach in 2014, Rogers has brought a winning culture to the Greyhounds, who are 19-5 record the past two seasons. Rogers’ 10-win season in 2014 marked the most wins in school history for a program that had just two winning seasons over the previous 12 years.

Rogers installed an explosive offense that averaged 37 points per game in 2014 and 35 per game in 2015. Quay Pitts and Quay Betha are two offensive linemen that have helped protect senior quarterback Bradley Hunnicutt.

Hunnicutt, a true pro-style quarterback, threw for 2,463 yards and 21 touchdowns. while only tossing three interceptions last year. Wide receiver Nick Singleton finished his junior season with 70 receptions for 905 yards and four touchdowns in nine games. Wide receiver Drae Butts will gain more playing time now that wide receiver Shareez Haam has graduated. The big

A key ingredient to Houston County’s success under Coach Lassiter has been the improvement of the Bears defense. Houston County has increased its win total in each of the three seasons Lassiter has been in charge, going from 7-4 to 10-3 to last year’s 11-2 mark. In his first two seasons, the Bears allowed a respectable 21.3 and 23.4 points per game before tightening up their defense even more in 2015, allowing 16.7 points a night.

Top tacklers Bennie Steadman (98) and Myron Jacobs (58) graduate along with sack-leader Rontravious Byron (10). The defense turns to seniors Mack McCollough and Keshaun Johnson to make splash plays. McCollough covers plenty of ground as a linebacker and Johnson was among the team leaders in interceptions last year.

BULLDOGS HAVE BITE

Mary Persons is also coming off one of the program’s best seasons in years as its 11-1 mark was the school’s best record since 1994’s 12-1 team. A 45-21 loss to Marist in the second round put an end to the Bulldogs’ dream season.

Mary Person’s talented defense is up to the task to battle with Houston County’s explosive offense (39.6 ppg). Discounting their loss to Marist, the Bulldogs allowed just 13.2 points per game over their first 11 contests, only allowing two teams to

play receiver finished his senior season with 24 receptions for 724 yards and a team-leading 10 touchdowns.

Jones County replaces running back Chandler Ramage, who rushed for 982 yards (five games with 100+ rushing yards) and had 20 receptions for 296 yards with a total of 13 touchdowns in 11 games last season. Juniors Drake Bolus and Teldrick Ross return with the most experience in the backfield.

Two-time state champion wrestler Torrez Finney leaves a massive hole along the defensive line. The defensive tackle stood only 5-foot-8, but his power disrupted offenses as he led the Greyhounds tackles for loss and sacks. Defensive end Justin Chambers and linebacker Dophie Thomas were also among the team’s leaders in tackles and must be replaced. Demonte Trawick showed signs of becoming a star at his linebacker position as a sophomore and should be the leader of the defense his final two seasons.

TROJANS’ TARGET

Head Coach Dean Fabrizio has been with Lee County since 2009, overseeing a program rooted in consistency, with the talent to compete with the state’s best. In 2015, Lee County did not make it to the playoffs for the first time in three years, in part due to a 6-4 finish in the daunting Region 1-AAAAAA with two-time defending state champion Colquitt County. During Fabrizio’s seven seasons with Lee County they have compiled

Four-star senior defensive end Malik Herring is the disruptor up front. He is being courted by top programs across the country and is a heavy lean to join either the ACC or SEC. The 6-foot-4, 265-pound pass-rusher totaled 80 tackles and led the team in both sacks (seven) and tackles for loss (21). Joining him up front is Tre Howard, who made 89 stops as a junior, and linebacker is Tay Jarrell, coming off a 96-tackle junior season.

Offensively, Head Coach Brian Nelson turns to a balanced run game that helped churn out 209 rushing yards per game in 2015. The Bulldogs, however, didn’t light up the scoreboard like their counterpart, and averaged just over 28 points a night with a ball-control approach.

The ground game runs through senior Zach Harvey. The 6-foot-1, 203-pound tailback rushed for 1,134 yards and 14 touchdowns and might be asked to do even more as Jaquavious Sims has graduated his 872 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Sophomore Quen Wilson starts at free safety but also contributes to the run game, racking up 459 yards and six touchdowns while averaging over seven yards per carry.

Under center, senior Caleb Speir makes his starting debut. He attempted just four passes last year while learning behind now graduated Jake Johnston. Senior wideouts Roger Akins (25 receptions, 357 yards, three touchdowns) and Jatori Sims (19 receptions, 267 yards, two touchdowns) will try to smooth Speir’s transition to starter.

In 2016 the Trojans will be led by starting quarterback junior Jase Orndorff, who replaces Garet Morrell after the senior threw for 1,499 yards and 19 touchdowns. As a sophomore, Orndorff went 30of-55 for 262 yards and one touchdown.

Big play threats Tray Eafford and Ahrion Covington leave voids at wide receiver. Eafford totaled 706 receiving and 12 touchdowns, while Covington caught 24 balls for 332 yards and one score. Rising senior Kono Smith totaled 10 catches for 79 yards and will be asked to try and replicate the success seen with Eafford and Covington flanking a physical running game. Wide receivers DreQuan Garmon and Josh Asbury will be making their debuts with the varsity as juniors.

TJ Harris, who completed the 2015 season with four interceptions and 61 tackles, will lead the defense. There is an opportunity at linebacker for someone to fill the void left by Cole Maxwell, who tallied 85.5 tackles last year. Senior defensive end Tory Carter returns after making 49 stops and collecting eight quarterback hurries.

With the graduation of Collins Tensley, the team’s leading sack-man with 8.5 last year, Carter will be asked to finish plays produced by Lee County’s aggressive pass rush.

Jones County has won its last four seasons openers, while Lee County has won its last six openers by an average of 35.2 points per game.

leven-time state champion Buford stages a must-see matchup with Class AAAAAAA powerhouse and defending state runner-up Roswell in the opener of Friday’s double-header.

Buford once again advanced to the GHSA state championship game last season, marking the ninth-straight season the Wolves clinched a state title berth. The Wolves finished the season 13-2 after falling to Cartersville in the Class AAAA State Championship game in the Georgia Dome, 10-0.

Buford graduates 22 seniors from last year’s roster but return a host of impact players. Key offensive returners include Mic Roof, T.D. Roof, Christian Turner, Joshua Blackwell, Anthony Grant and Jake Simpson. Mic Roof threw for 1,507 yards and 15 touchdowns to go along with 46 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown in the Wolves’ star-studded offense. Mic’s brother T.D., also a senior, ran for 168 yards and five touchdowns to go along with 76 receiving yards and one touchdown, while recording 55 tackles and six sacks on defense. Turner compiled 788 yards with an astonishing 9.4 yards per carry and 10 touchdowns to go along with 13 tackles and one sack. Blackwell ran for 261 yards and five touchdowns to go along with 44 receiving yards and one touchdown, while recording 32 tackles and one interception. Grant added 743 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground to go along with 74 receiving yards and two touchdowns, while recording 20 tackles and four sacks. Simpson had 261 receiving yards, averaging 18.6 yards per catch and three touchdowns, while recording 48

illgrove and South Forsyth make their first appearance in the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic as the programs meet on the gridiron for the first time. Phillip Ironside has been the head coach since the school’s opening in 2006.

Last season, Matt Wilson led Hillgrove with 797 passing yards and seven touchdowns, as injuries interrupted consistency. With Wilson having to fight through injuries, Hunter Arters and Bryson Parks were forced to play a large role in the offense at a young age. Arters, a junior, was impressive when he did see the field last season and recorded 1,023 passing yards and eight touchdowns in the seven games he played in. Parks saw less action at the quarterback position, but proved himself as a versatile athlete with 80 rushing yards and 102 receiving yards over the course of the season. The rotating of quarterbacks last season provided both Arters and Parks with varsity experience as sophomores that will become valuable as they lead the offensive unit this fall.

Jeremiah Bridges is the most valuable skill player that the Hawks lost this offseason after putting up 590 yards and six touchdowns his senior campaign. Chigoziem Okonkwo is returning for his junior season after totaling 238 yards and three touchdowns in 2015. Starting running back Mason Marshall had 156 yards rushing last year.

The Hillgrove defense allowed 23.9 points per game last year and will need nose guard Ji-

tackles, two sacks, and two interceptions.

As a team, the Wolves averaged 42.1 points per game and allowed just 7.3 behind a dominating defense.

This will be the first time Buford and Roswell face off since 1983, a game in which Buford won 34-10.

HORNETS HABIT

Roswell’s return to prominence has been piloted by Head Coach John Ford. Ford has been the head coach for three seasons and has compiled an overall record of 26-11. Last season, Roswell finished 14-1 after falling to Colquitt County in the state championship. Remarkably, this was just five years after the Hornets went 0-10. Prior to Ford taking over the program, the team had not had a winning season since 2010. Roswell is developing a new dynasty evidenced by its jump into the national rankings last season.

Roswell had a historic dominance over the AllRegion 5-AAAAAA team in 2015, earning 12 firstteamers to pair with three second-teamers and three Honorable Mention selections. Coach Ford won Region Coach of the Year and standout linebacker Tre Lamar won Defensive Player of the Year.

The team loses 16 seniors from 2015. The key contributors lost from last season include Tre Lamar (four-star, Clemson), linebacker/defensive end Tyrone Hopper (three-star, UNC), safety Marcelino Ball (three-star, Indiana), quarterback Quintarius Neely (Tuskegee), offensive tackle Jared Lyons (University of the South), offensive guard

marco Witherow and linebacker Kelechi Kagha to lead the unit as physical presences. Witherow had 11 tackles last season and has the ability to and play end, linebacker and tackle on the defensive line. Kagha has been a starting linebacker for the Hawks since his sophomore year and is the most experienced player on the defense. Last year Kagha had 49 total tackles with four tackles for a loss in the five games he started at the varsity level. Both players are entering their senior years and will be vocal leaders on the defense as well. Safety Jared Pryor (27 tackles) and corner Cameron Wilson (11 tackles) are the only returning starters in the secondary. The secondary will have to solidify quickly with players like Bailey Hockman (McEachern QB and FSU commit) and Chad Terrell (North Paulding WR and three-star recruit) in their region.

WAR EAGLES RISE

South Forsyth was able to finish the year with an 11-2 record, the highest win total in school history. Quarterback Davis Shanley, who powered the offense into the quarterfinals where they fell in a shootout with Colquitt County 49-31, leads the unit.

Shanley returns to his role after completing 63 percent of his passes while throwing for 2,342 yards and 25 touchdowns. He tacked on 623 additional rushing yards and another eight touchdowns on the ground to keep defenders

Ford has a plethora of proven and emerging talent returning this season on ball sides of the ball. Offensively, tight end Tyneil Hopper, threestar running back Sheldon Evans, three-star wide receiver Jayden Comma, offensive tackle Jordan Tucker(three-star, Tennessee), three-star athlete Corey Reed and athlete Malik Willis (three-star, Virginia Tech) lead the way.

The Hornet defense that allowed 12.2 points per game last season returns linebacker Sam Diroberto, two-star defensive end Koby Cumberlander, three-star cornerback Justus Harris, cornerback LeAnthony Williams, Jr. (four-star, Clemson) and four-star safety Xavier McKinney.

Roswell’s secondary will be one of the most feared in the state of Georgia. Between the three returning defensive backs, they combined for over 15 interceptions in 2015, McKinney had a teamleading nine, while Harris shut down offenses with 20 pass defenses. McKinney ranked second on the team in tackles with 111, shy of Lamar’s 139 mark.

The front-seven is once again dominant with Cumberlander returning for his senior season.

Running back Sam Outlaw, a Kennesaw State commit that graduated in 2016, posted over 1,100 yards on the ground and scored 14 touchdowns, adding another 218 yards in the receiving game. Jalen Camp, Shanley’s favorite target, posted a 47-catch, 819-yard receiving line and scored an impressive 15 touchdowns.

Camp used his big senior season to notch an offer from Georgia Tech, where he will be attending this fall. The only skill player returning this year on offense that finished with over 200 total yards is wide receiver Guy Morra. Up front the offense returns three starting linemen that should help protect Shanley his senior season.

The defensive unit of the War Eagles will be led by senior linebacker Max Slott. Slott led the team in tackles last season with 117 total.

South Forsyth lost All-State Honorable Mention defensive end Cameron Kline, who will be playing football for Harvard this fall after sacking the quarterback 15 times in his senior season. Incoming junior Ryan LaFlamme, who was able to produce 37 tackles and five sacks in his sophomore season, will replace Kline on defense. Rising senior linebacker Julian Mingo will also have an immediate impact on the defense after being named to the AAAAAA Region All-Second team and posting an impressive 11 tackles for a loss in his junior year.

he 2015 Tucker Tigers had another successful season under head Coach Bryan Lamar, despite a slow start to the season and a slew of injuries in the weeks leading up to the playoffs.

Lamar, along with 26 senior players, helped lead the Tigers to an 8-4 overall record. A regular season 7-3 finish propelled them to the Class AAAAAA State Playoffs, where they won their first contest over Langston Hughes 38-28. In the second round they played South Forsyth, and lost by a score of 42-35, ending the Tigers season.

The team was powered into the playoffs by a strong senior class that featured eight players that will play college football this fall.

The vacancies include Terry Beckham (Austin Peay), Kalil Bradley (Hutchinson CC), Rashaan Crawford (Idaho), Akeam Peters (Kent State), Tabarius Peterson (Louisville), Garrett Rigby (Harvard), Cecil Stallings (Louisville) and Chase Tyson (Wingate).

Tucker’s defense has a new cast of rising stars leading the way. Keith Best, Brian Strozier Jr. and Derrick McLendon all return. Best, a 6-foot-2 senior cornerback, will anchor the pass defense and has a D-1 offer from Kentucky. Strozier Jr., a senior, is a returning middle linebacker and has received offers from both Colorado State and Louisville. McLendon, who will only be a sophomore this upcoming season, is a hot commodity in recruiting circles as he has received multiple offers already from schools such as Florida, Central Michigan, Southern Miss and Tulane.

wo of Gwinnett County’s perennial powers meet at the MetroPCS Corky Kell Classic after both programs failed to reach the postseason for the first time since 2001. Last season was the first time in Coach Bob Sphire’s 10 years at North Gwinnett that the Bulldogs failed to register a winning record (5-5). Coach Philip Jones finished 4-6 in his first year at the helm of Brookwood, a twowin increase from Mark Crews’ final year.

FROM PUPS TO DOGS

North Gwinnett went through the growing pains of starting an inexperienced sophomore quarterback, even though the Bulldogs flaunted four-star wide receiver Josh Imatorbhebhe (USC) and three-star running back Kameron Pickett (Buffalo). Cade Fortin stepped in to replace John Urzua under center, the current Middle Tennessee State passer that threw for 3,142 yards and 34 touchdowns his senior season in 2014 and setting the Corky Kell Classic record for touchdown passes in a game with seven.

With big shoes to fill, Fortin battled in the competitive Region 7-AAAAAA. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback threw for 1,475 yards and 11 touchdowns, but struggled with accuracy at times, tossing eight interceptions and completing just 51 percent of his passes. Now entering his junior season, Fortin has ramped up his play and could be in-line for a breakout season. He has risen up recruiting boards and is now a sought after four-star prospect.

Also returning for the Tucker defense will be the leading tackler from 2015 and rising junior Antonio Showers. Showers finished with an impressive team-leading 71 total tackles while also compiling six sacks and 12 tackles for a loss. The team’s second leading tackler, Gerry Vaughn, will also be back as a rising junior and finished with 58 tackles with 14 tackles for a loss and two interceptions.

Leading the offense this season are running backs Samuel Bryant and Chris Broadwater.

Bryant, a smaller back at 5-foot-9 with blazing 4.36 40-speed, has recently committed to play for the Kennesaw State Owls in 2017. He tallied 668 rushing yards last year while punching in 10 rushing TDs with a 8.1 yards per carry average (YPC). Broadwater was able to run for an impressive 1,304 yards and 18 touchdowns on 9.1 YPC as a junior.

LONGHORN LEGACY

Head Coach Derek Cook and the Longhorns added a 9-4 record last season to advance past the first round of the playoffs for the sixth straight year. Since Cook’s arrival at Kell in 2008, the Longhorns have compiled a 78-20 record.

Cook and company put on a clinic in their season opener at the Corky Kell Classic in 2015.

The Longhorns stampeded into the Georgia Dome and dismantled the Carrollton Trojans 35-0. Stone Hatfield and John Lampley split time at the quarterback spot and combined for nine completions for 62 yards, while sophomore

Behind Fortin will be senior running back Ryan Lovelace who came on strong down the stretch last year. He rushed for over 450 yards with his best game coming in the Bulldogs season finale against Mountain View, chewing up 137 yards on the ground while tagging on a touchdown.

Sliding in to become a top target outside in the passing game for a young and inexperienced receiving corps is Ricky Reed. Reed, a senior, is projected to start after spending last year at Norcross.

Joining him outside is sophomore Javonni Cunningham who saw glimpses of varsity action with the Bulldogs as a freshman.

North Gwinnett struggled to score last year, averaging 22 points, but the Bulldogs did have a respectable defense that allowed 28 points per game. Senior linebacker Brian Eberhardt returns after collecting 86 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and four sacks. The strength of Coach Sphire’s defense comes in the trenches as four-star defensive end Drew Jordan causes havoc. At 6-foot-3, 235 pounds, the Duke-commit made 45 tackles, six tackles for loss and picked up four sacks last year.

Dixon Yellott holds interest from ACC schools and can play both on the edge and linebacker. He comes off a junior season in which he had 49 tackles, five tackles for loss and two sacks.

BRONCO PRIDE

Brookwood had many of the same issues North Gwinnett suffered last year. A sputtering offense thanks to inexperience (20.5 ppg) and a

Josiah Futral fueled the majority of Kell’s attack rushing for 74 yards and two touchdowns. Current Kennesaw State Owl, Bryson Armstrong was the star of the show. Armstrong caught five passes for thirty-four yards, had four tackles, a sack and two punt returns for touchdowns.

For Kell, offense is the name of the game.

John Lampley returns for his senior season coming off an impressive junior year at quarterback.

Last season Lampley threw for 845 yards and six touchdowns and rushed for 187 yards and five touchdowns. With the graduation of Armstrong, Josh Blancato will now step up as Lampley’s top target. Making plays in the passing game with an increased role will be 6-foot-3 210-pound tight end Evan Carnes. The lethal running back tandem, of Futral and Nathaniel (Dre) Houston also returns. Futral rushed for 912 yards and seven touchdowns last season while Houston recorded 542 rushing yards and seven scores. The Longhorn backfield is the primary source of offense for Kell and contributed 28 of the team’s touchdowns last season.

Defensively, the Longhorns return 3-star outside linebacker and Tennessee commit, Solon Page III. Last season Page posted 110 tackles, 15 tackles for losses, three sacks, two forced fumbles, two interceptions and two interceptions for touchdowns. Stud cornerback, Shamaar Bennett and defensive lineman Kendall Bailey also return and will play major roles in the team’s success.

The Broncos have a trump card on defense in 6-foot-4 linebacker Leonard Warner. The four-star linebacker is one of the best uncommitted players in the southeast as he combines his physical play (220 pounds) with his ability to cover the entire field (4.66 40-time). Warner has attended The Opening, is an Army All-American nominee and an All-County selection. He tallied 110 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, two sacks and had 17 quarterback hurries last year.

Next to Warner is senior linebacker Guillermo Luna. He picked up a team-high 135 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and three sacks. Cantorian Weems locks down the outside as a senior corner that recorded 68 tackles a year ago.

Junior quarterback Angelo DiSpigna will be asked to move the ball on offense after throwing for 1,121 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore while splitting time with Tanner Winskie.

DiSpigna should get the nod full-time now, but will be without running back Jesse Brown (Northwestern) and top wide receiver Dorian Miles (Kennesaw State).

Matthew Hill enters his junior season as a versatile piece on both offense and defense. He will suit up at strong safety and wide receiver, where he totaled 25 receptions for 271 yards. Hill was an All-County kick returner after he averaged 23.9 yards per return and brought a 92-yard return back for a score.

onsistency and sustaining success will be the theme for the 2016 Blue Devils after a disappointing slide left Norcross with a 7-4 record and first-round exit last season. Head Coach Keith Maloof and his talented squad opened up the season winning each of their first seven games, but it was the team’s four straight losses to close the year by a combined 88-23 points that has left a bad taste in Norcross, Ga.

Senior quarterback Baron Radcliff leads the Norcross offense this season after having a solid junior year. Due to his 6-foot-4, 200-pound frame and athleticism, Radcliff has received offers from a number of Division 1 programs. They include Boston College, Vanderbilt, Georgia Southern, Tulane and South Alabama.

Joining Radcliff in the Blue Devils backfield is returning starting running back Necholas Sermons. Sermons played a significant role for Norcross last season, finishing with 113 carries for 487 yards and four touchdowns. Sermons was also a receiving threat out of the backfield, as he led the team in receiving with 214 yards while hauling in 13 receptions and one touchdown.

The Norcross defense returns a plethora of talent in 2016 that continues the Blue Devils’ tradition of fast and hard-hitting defenders.

Senior middle linebacker Monty Montgomery will lead the unit this season. As a junior, Montgomery was able to compile a stat line that included 137 total tackles, 33 tackles for a loss,

three sacks, two forced fumbles and two defensive touchdowns. He has received college offers from Tennessee Tech, Mercer, Georgia State and a few others. He will be joined on the defensive line by standout defensive end Jalen Pinkney.

Pinkney was able to compile 10 hurries last season from the end position and tallied 6.5 sacks, while adding 68 tackles.

The key loss for the Norcross defense is defensive end Robert Beal. Beal is a 5-star player who had five sacks and four fumble recoveries last year. He has decided to transfer to IMG Academy in Florida for his senior season. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Beal recently committed to the University of Georgia.

season looks to be 5-foot-11, 170-pound senior, Jay Saunders, who Propst believes has all the tools to lead his potent offense.

The offense will look for a new star out wide as former three-star receiver, Kiel Pollard, suits up for University of South Carolina this fall. Pollard caught 76 passes last season for 1,163 yards and 18 touchdowns. Also moving on are Ty Lee (MTSU) and Isaiah Thomas (West Georgia). Lee totaled 826 yards rushing and five touchdowns to go with 58 receptions, 928 yards and nine receiving touchdowns while Thomas posted 29 receptions, 584 yards, eight touchdowns and a school-record 98-yard touchdown catch.

Seniors Tory Ponder and Ty Powell look to be the answers at receiver this year for the Packers. In their junior years, Ponder had 30 receptions for 331 yards while Powell had 10 receptions for 132 yards and two touchdowns. At running back, junior Nigel Hillie steps into the starting role after his sophomore campaign saw him gain 317 yards and five touchdowns on 64 carries (third-highest on team).

The centerpiece of the defense this year is junior linebacker JJ Peterson. Ranked as a fivestar prospect by 247Sports, Peterson finished his sophomore campaign with 30 total tackles (four for loss) and three sacks.

lass AAAAAA staged the game of the year last December as undefeated Colquitt County and undefeated Mill Creek met in the semifinals. Everything about the matchup was intriguing and lived up to the hype. The Packers were playing for a 29th straight victory, while Mill Creek’s defense was on a record pace after allowing less than seven points per game on the year. In the end, it was the Packers celebrating a 52-31 victory after outscoring the Hawks 31-14 in the second half.

“That game was not for the weak or the young,” said Colquitt County head coach Rush Propst after the game. “That was big boy football right there.

You saw a bunch of good football players out on that field tonight. We got ‘em and Mill Creek’s got ‘em, too.”

Last year’s semifinals classic is just one of the many reasons that this primetime matchup is one of the top showdowns slated in the Corky Kell’s 25year anniversary.

PACKERS PRIME

Two-time defending state champion Colquitt County rides a state-best 30-game winning streak as Propst enters his ninth year with the Packers. Last year’s state championship quarterback Chase Parrish threw for 3,501 yards and 40 touchdowns while also adding 362 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. This fall, Parrish moves on to Annapolis, Maryland where he will play for the Navy Midshipmen as they look to replace NCAA leader in career touchdowns, Keenan Reynolds. Stepping in at quarterback this

In his third year as Walton head coach, Mo Dixon will look to improve off an impressive 9-2 campaign that ended with a 49-20 loss to Central Gwinnett in the first round of the playoffs.

It will be difficult for the Raiders to match last year’s success after losing 24 seniors from the team. Walton’s biggest losses will be on defense where 10 of its 11 starters were members of that impressive senior class. Strong safety Joey Goodman, corner Christian Sullivan and corner Ryan Roegge will be suiting up for Harvard, Princeton and Dartmouth this fall. The trio of defensive backs combined for 198 tackles.

Brooks will be playing at Penn against his other three Ivy League teammates while Letton signed with Troy.

The Raiders will return several key players that will be crucial to establishing a new foundation in 2016. Starting quarterback Addison Shoup threw for 2,631 yards and 24 touchdowns last year with only two interceptions. Shoup will team up with sophomore playmaker Dominick Blaylock. Blaylock has nationally-recognized talent and already boasts offers from powerhouses such as Georgia, Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Florida State and Auburn. As a freshman, Blaylock recorded 795 receiving yards, eight touchdowns and averaged 23 yards on punt returns.

The Raiders defense will require large contributions from young players to hold the team to the high defensive standard it set last year.

The strategic leaders of the defense in terms of calling plays will be junior linebackers Kris Kollias and Aaron Shapiro. Both players played scarce minutes on varsity last season, but helped lead the JV team to a 5-1-1 record. Defensive end Kamian Brooks, is a talent to watch in his first varsity snaps.

Norwood added 24 catches for 371 yards and two touchdowns. Graham is a threat in the return game as well, recording two touchdowns and averaging 34.6 yards per kickoff return.

The strength of the Hawks’ championshipcaliber team is their stout defense, which posted six shutouts during their 2015 dominance. There will be questions to answer in the Georgia Dome on Saturday, however with just two defensive starters returning.

Two-star senior defensive back Jamar Hall returns his 56 total tackles, two interceptions and two forced fumbles to lead the secondary. Junior Jonathan Gipson holds offers from Auburn, Maryland and West Virginia. The cornerback made 52 tackles, picked off three passes and had 13 pass breakups. Up front, Tyler Vernon (Army) is gone after a school-record 16-sack season.

he final game of the 25th annual MetroPCS Corky Kell Classic and the last Corky Kell game ever held in the Georgia Dome pits McEachern against Archer in a Class AAAAAA state playoffs second round rematch which the Tigers stopped the Indians last season, 24-21. Fireworks should be a plenty as both teams are coming off dominant Corky Kell perfomances in 2015, McEachern drilling Tucker 50-14 and Archer crushing North Paulding 49-21.

GOLD BLOODED

Aside from a Week 3 stumble against Peachtree Ridge 9-6, McEachern (10-2) steamrolled its way into the playoffs, pitching four defensive shutouts along the way and giving up just 7.1 points per game in the regular season.

Julian Rochester (UGA) and Andrew Tarver (FIU) paved the way for a crushing defense. Justin Coleman takes over the mantle as the Indians run-stuffer. At 6-foot-2, 265 pounds, the senior is ready to step into the limelight after collecting 17 tackles a year ago. Willie Dean and Michael Fairbanks both surround Coleman on the line and can blow up offensive linemen in their pursuit of the quarterback.

Navy-commit Myles James patrols the middle of the field at linebacker with Quentin Hayes who made 61 stops a year ago. Jaytlin Askew is pegged as the Indians’ top cover corner and is a Georgia Tech-commit.

As great as McEachern was on defense, everything falls back on the shoulders of four-star Florida State-commit, quarterback Bailey Hockman. The coach’s son announced his presence as a sophomore in 2014 when he passed for 3,600 yards, 42 touchdowns and only nine interceptions but took a step back his junior season, totaling 2,118 yards, 17 touchdowns and 11 picks.

Hockman will get a chance to further cement himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the state his senior season as weapons Tyler Smith (UNC), E.J. Scott (three-star) and Genuine Potts pose problems on the outside for opponents.

Smith tore his ACL against Buford and spent the next six months rehabbing to be ready for his final season. Scott plays on both sides of the ball as a versatile playmaker while Potts, a 6-foot-3 junior that runs a 4.63 40-time, is a gifted athlete.

Tremayne Anchrum (Clemson) leaves a void along the offensive line while tight end Christian Roberson (Mississippi State) and running back Sam Jackson (West Georgia) are also gone, but an electrifying backfield of Quay Holmes and Paris Brown can soothe the growing pains. Holmes, a senior, racked up 433 yards rushing while Brown, a sophomore, tacked on 213 yards on the ground.

Will Bearden stunned McEachern on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 35 seconds left to put a capper on the Tigers’ wild 24-21 comeback win

over the Indians. Bearden hit on 29 of his 42 passing attempts for 222 yards while Jamyest Williams gained 85 yards on the ground.

A lot has changed since that cold night on November 20 however. Bearden is now at West Georgia while Williams has transferred to Grayson for his senior season. Junior Dillon Waye takes over under center replacing Bearden’s 2,430 yards passing and junior Keegan Strickland slots in to make up for Williams’ 1,249 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Also gone is four-star Auburn wide receiver Kyle Davis, who amassing 47 receptions and 776 yards his final season. Tyler Ranel and Malik Sproles are projected starters that should see the most action in the passing game.

While the offense might go through some growing pains, the Archer defense could be potent. Junior cornerback Taiyon Palmer is a threestar prospect that has received offers from Duke and Indiana. Sophomores Jalyn Phillips and Andrew Booth are wet behind the ears but have bright futures ahead of them according to Head Coach Andy Dyer.

“They are young players with very high ceilings and good ball skills.”

State champion wrestler Quinn Miller is a wrecking ball on defense. He will be the unquestioned leader defensively. Sophomore Colby Wooden, junior Will Choloh and senior Sam Wright are all interchangeable pieces that get after it in the trenches.
