and Spirit Rules Committee and had spent time judging state, national and international competitions by the time she was named GHSA Cheerleading Coordinator. During her time as a coach, Carter’s Hardaway teams took region titles every year from 1992-2004, when she retired, and won the 1994-95 Class AAA state title. The title in 1995 came in the second year of competition cheerleading and serves as an example to Carter of how far the sport has come in the 23 years since. “When I won state in 1995, the little pyramid I won with probably would be in the bottom three scores in the state this year if you

look back in time,” Carter said. “This sport has just developed way beyond what I ever expected.” Last year’s cheerleading state championships introduced a Class AAAAAAA field to the sport for the first time, and the statewide reclassification created new opportunities. Cedartown in Class AAAA and Gordon Lee in Class A-Public became first-time champs, while perennial powers Lambert, McIntosh and Pierce County clinched their fourth state titles. Vidalia snapped its 12-year title drought with the Class AA title, and Northgate clinched its seventh all-time state title. Mount Paran joined Northgate as the only other program to produce five straight titles. Woodland-Cartersville won its second coed title last year and can join Winder-Barrow and Peachtree Ridge this weekend as the only three-time coed winners. As this weekend closes the chapter on cheerleading’s first 25 years as a sport, what the next 25 years could look like is a fascinating thought. “Even though we are at 25 years, we are still trying to earn the respect of our fellow athletes and the public,” Carter said. “So many people will watch on TV, and they see the sideline cheerleaders in pro ball and they occasionally may come across the national competitions, but so few ever have the opportunity to sit in the arena and watch these young athletes from the state of Georgia compete and see the talent level, to observe exactly what they are doing. I hope that I see the day where this sport gains that respect and people are in awe of the talent of these athletes. It may happen sooner than I think.” Photos courtesy of Unforgettable Moments Photography/GHSA PHOTO /GHSA

he 25th anniversary of cheerleading’s first year as a sport in Georgia will be celebrated at the 2017-18 GHSA Cheerleading State Championships this weekend at the Columbus Civic Center. The sport has grown tremendously since the inaugural 199394 season, and the 144 squads making the trip to Columbus this weekend will put those two and a half decades of progress on full display. With more athleticism, creativity and focus peppered into the routines each year, the bar is always getting pushed higher. GHSA Cheerleading Coordinator and State Tournament Director Pam Carter has been instrumental to this growth and has witnessed it firsthand as one of cheerleading’s pioneers. Carter graduated from Columbus High School and returned to the area after college to accept a teaching position at Hardaway High School. There, she was introduced to the sport of cheerleading and signed up to be the squad’s sponsor in a time before “cheerleading coach” was an established term. Once it was announced that schools would begin competition cheerleading, Carter felt compelled to learn the rules and started to coach intently. A 30-plus-year career as a cheerleading coach began, and so did Carter’s above-and-beyond attitude and influence on the sport. Carter initiated meetings with different coaches around the state, and this led to the organization of the Georgia Cheerleading Coaches Association, which would help educate all member schools on the state’s regulations. Carter had experience serving on the National Federation of State High School Associations’ Board
