2020 IBEW GREAT ATLANTA BASH

NORTH CLAYTON EAGLES The Eagles opened up the 2020 season this past weekend against Clayton County rival Riverdale and were defeated 31-0. The loss to the Raiders came in region play and the program will be looking to build back momentum when they take on B.E.S.T. Academy for the first time in history this Saturday. North Clayton is led by Eagles’ alum Cap Burnett—who took over as head coach in 2016. Burnett led North Clayton to back-to-back postseasons his first two seasons, but the Eagles have combined for a 3-17 overall record in the past two campaigns. Burnett knows the program—and Clayton County football—well and was an All-State selection and Clayton News Defensive Player of the Year recipient his senior year at the school. Burnett went on to attend the University of Georgia and after his playing career ended went back to North Clayton as a volunteer coach on Don Shockley’s staff before eventually earning the head job. Offense has been an area of concern over the past three seasons and North Clayton averaged just 5.4 ppg in 2019—the lowest output since the 1982 season. This year’s squad featured senior Kam’ron Daniels—a 6-foot, 300-pounder that can play defensive tackle and guard. Additionally, Quenton Brown is a 5-foot-10, 180-pound senior that plays outside linebacker and defensive end. Derrick Dixon Jr. is a 5-foot-10 senior that can play quarterback, running back and receiver.

B.E.S.T. ACADEMY EAGLES B.E.S.T. Academy competed in its first full varsity season in 2012—the same year that current head coach Joshua Moore made his debut with the program. In the Eagles’ first eight seasons of existence—Moore has led the team to four playoff berths and has posted a 31-54 overall record. In addition to becoming a competitive Class A-Public program, B.E.S.T. Academy had nine former players represented on college rosters this past season. The Eagles were supposed to open up their 2020 season against Berkmar this past weekend, but the Patriots were forced to quarantine due to positive COVID-19 cases in the program and the game was called off. Now, the Eagles (0-0-1), will take on North Clayton in its season opener looking to start off the season with a victory for the fourth-consecutive year. B.E.S.T. Academy defeated KIPP 28-12 to open 2019, 12-8 to open 2018 and scored a massive 53-7 win over Landmark Christian to kickoff 2017. Last year’s Eagles competed in Class 2A and earned the No. 4 seed out of a talented Region 6. This paired them up with Rabun County in the opening round of the state playoffs and the Eagles were defeated 38-0. Tight end and defensive lineman Rashad Whitehead was the team’s top playmaker a year ago and he earned Honorable Mention before signing to play at Liberty University. Class of 2022 running back and outside linebacker Khaliq Brock is one of the top rising stars headlining this year’s roster.

LOVEJOY WILDCATS Lovejoy enters the matchup with Carver after opening with a 38-7 victory over Mundy’s Mill last week, beginning coach Edgar Carson’s seventh season with a win. The Wildcats missed out on the playoffs last season for the first since 2009. Lovejoy appeared in back-to-back state title games in 2011-12. Carson’s best record at Lovejoy was his 7-5 finish and an appearance in the second round in 2016. This season, the Wildcats are led by quarterback Stephen Craig, a 5-foot-11, 194-pound junior. Backing up Craig is freshman quarterback Russell Davis. Senior fullback Yakim Herriot and Trevon Kinchen (So.) will anchor the backfield with freshman Jordan Thompson and senior Khalil Daniels as backups. Receivers Cameron Smith (Sr.), Quentavious Scandrett (Sr.), Ke’Andre Haines (So.) and Antonio Jones (Sr.) return experience for the Lovejoy offense. Kameren Epps (Sr.), Jalen Botello (Fr.), Elijah Shareef (So.), Ahmed Brimah (Sr.), and David John (Jr.) man the offensive line for the Wildcats. On defense, Justin Etheridge (So.), Isreal Nwokocha (Sr.), Michal Boireau (Fr.) and Elijah Chhoeung (Sr.) front the defensive line for Lovejoy. Michael Brooks (Jr.) and AJ Barber (Sr.) back the line. The defensive backfield is controlled by Nolan Jones (Sr.), Scandrett, Cameron Henry (Jr.), Jekail Middlebrook (So.) and Jones. On the special teams, Payne and Jones alternate place kicking and punts. On kick returns, both Jones and Daniels have proven effective. Lovejoy had 21 alumni players on college rosters last season.

CARVER PANTHERS Carver is coming off a 7-4 finish and a first-round exit in the Class AAAAA playoffs in head coach Darren Myles’ 15th season in 2019. The Panthers opened the season last week in the Corky Kell Classic with a loss to Cherokee 38-12 and it became apparent that one part of Carver’s offensive scheme that needs attention is the vacancy left by Jo’quavious Marks’ graduation. Marks finished his senior year in 2019 with 162 carries for 1,519 yards and 23 touchdowns to anchor the Panther rushing attack. But there is promise in the Panther backfield. Rising junior Jarveous Brown and rising senior Bobby Sims return with experience in the position. Brown carried the ball 59 times for 352 yards and four touchdowns last season. Sims had 39 carries for 336 yards and three touchdowns. Last week against Cherokee, Brown had 10 carries for 76 yards. Sophomore quarterback Lorenza Lennon was impressive last week, passing for 254 yards and a touchdown on 12-of-22 attempts. Junior Tobias Robinson made two receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown against Cherokee. Carver’s recent playoff history is interesting. The Panthers have made the playoffs each season since 2012 but only advanced past the first round once in 2017 when Carver lost to eventual runner-up Warner Robins 31-7 in the state semifinals on the road. Myles led the Panthers to the quarterfinals in 2007, his second year at Carver. This will be the first-ever meeting between Carver and Lovejoy. Carver defeated Jackson-Atlanta 18-7 in the inaugural Great Atlanta Bash last season. Carver had 11 alumni players on college rosters last season.

RIVERDALE RAIDERS Riverdale will make its debut in the Great Atlanta Bash this year and carries a 1-0 record into its matchup with Mays. The Raiders became the first program in all of Class 4A to score a region victory this past weekend after defeating Region 5 rival North Clayton 31-0. In the win, 6-foot-2 senior quarterback Avaun Rucker threw two touchdown passes and also rushed for a score. Seniors Derwin Burgess Jr. and Frederick Collins III were the recipients of Rucker’s touchdown throws and junior running back Jason Stokes also had a 35-yard touchdown run in the victory. Burgess is a 3-star receiver that is ranked the No. 99 overall prospect in the state for the Class of 2021; the 5-foot-11 receiver committed to South Carolina on July 2. The Raiders are led by head coach Rodney Hackney, who is in his third season at the school. Prior to arriving at Riverdale, Hackney served as a head coached at Lithonia (2007), North Clayton (2008-10) and Booker T. Washington (2011-14). Riverdale competed in Class 5A for the past four seasons before joining Class 4A this year. The team went 7-4 in each of Hackney’s first two seasons and has made the playoffs three out of the last four seasons. Riverdale’s most successful season came in 1998 under George Spencer. The team achieved a 13-1 record, captured the second region title in program history and reached the semifinals for the first time.

MAYS RAIDERS Mays is set to make its second appearance in the Great Atlanta Bash after defeating New Manchester 13-0 a year ago in the inaugural edition of the event. Mays has been one of the most successful football programs within the Atlanta Public School District over the last decade and carries a seven-year playoff streak into this season. The Class 4A-based Raiders opened up this season in the Corky Kell Classic and were defeated by Class 7A West Forsyth 42-6. In the defeat, Mays forced five fumbles, but West Forsyth was able to recover all five. As for the offense, the team accounted for 132 rushing yards off of 22 carries and Salaumon Evans and Quintavious Johnson combined for 103 passing yards off of 30 attempts. Senior wide receiver Devin Miller posted a gamehigh seven receptions and 87 receiving yards in the defeat. Mays has a lot of new pieces leading the way this season and has been historically one of the top programs in Metro Atlanta when it comes to producing college players. During the 2019 college football season, Mays had a whopping 35 former players represented on college rosters. The program is led by head coach Niketa Battle, who has guided the team to three region championships and a pair of quarterfinal appearances in his first four years at the school. This past season, Mays closed out a 9-1 regular season record before falling to Coffee 59-36 in the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs.
