GREETINGS, GHSA BASKETBALL FANS Welcome to the Ralph Swearngin GHSA Basketball Tournament Semifinals. Our congratulations go out to all the teams that have made it to this point in the season. All the teams are certainly successful and have put a great deal of work and effort to be here and all are hopeful to clear this last hurdle to take them to the championship game. Special thanks go out to Ernie Yarbrough, Assistant Executive Director of the GHSA and sport administrator for basketball. He has led the effort to make this a “first class” event and the support staff he has assembled is second to none. Ernie and his staff stand ready to assist you in any way possible to ensure SECOND ROUND R1 #2 Tift Co.

The Buford girls seek their seventh state title, having won two straight and three of the last four. Southwest DeKalb is playing for the chance to win its sixth championship, having won titles in 2008-10, 2013 and 2016. The Buford-SWD semifinal matchup is also a rematch of the 2017 Class AAAAA championship game, which Buford won 60-42. Buford defeated Veterans 59-44 in the quarters, forcing 29 turnovers. Tate Walters scored 26 points to go with nine steals, six rebounds and four assists to lead her team. Buford’s only two losses are close ones to Class AAAAAAA Westlake and Norcross. SWD got past Griffin 61-45 on Tuesday, as Raven Thurman scored all of her 14 points in the second half, to go with eight rebounds. Another DeKalb team, Columbia, takes on Carroll County’s Villa Rica on the other side of the bracket. Columbia has won three titles since 2010, most recently in 2013, while Villa Rica is in its second-straight semifinals (lost to Buford last season). Undefeated Villa Rica eliminated Eagle’s Landing 67-47 in the quarters as Kentucky signee Deasia Merrill scored 27 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and had five assists. Columbia closed on a 13-0 run over the last 5:37 to defeat Wayne County 50-45 on Tuesday. India Terrell made four free throws in the final 23 seconds to help seal the win. Southwest DeKalb pulled off a dramatic comeback on Tuesday to best Woodland-Stockbridge 66-65. The Panthers came from 18 down, 50-32, with 2:39 left in the third quarter before going on an 18-2 run, finally taking the lead 59-58 in the fourth quarter. K.D. Johnson, who led SWD with 18 points, hit the game-winning layup with 5.7 seconds left. While SWD wants a chance to play for its first title, Buford is in the running for its second, having won Class AAAAA in 2017. Buford has lost only twice this season and downed Dutchtown 6935 in a strong defensive effort that had the Wolves up 30-10 at half. Wingate signee Donell Nixon led Buford with 18 points. Lithonia’s boys last made the Final Four in 2016. The Bulldogs took down defending champion Warner Robins 53-50 on Tuesday, exacting payback for a close loss to the Demons in last season’s quarters. Eric Gaines put back his own miss to give the Bulldogs a 51-50 lead in the final minute, then Gaines locked up the win with two free throws. Fayette County survived New Hampstead 38-36 in Round 1 and passed another test at Kell in the quarters, winning 77-73 as Greg Smith hit two free throws with 6.1 seconds left. Jekobe Coleman led the Tigers with 18 points. Both Fayette County and Lithonia seek their first state titles.

Norcross defeated McEachern 75-55 in last year’s quarterfinals, but this year’s McEachern team carries a 30-0 record, and a No. 1 ranking into this anticipated rematch. Five-star point guard Sharife Cooper leads McEachern and he paced the Indians past Peachtree Ridge in the quarterfinals this Wednesday with a teamhigh 22 points, while seniors Quinton McElroy and Isaac Okoro each netted 15. Norcross is battle-tested and used wins over Mountain View, Grayson and Roswell to punch its semifinal ticket. Seniors Brandon Boston, Kyle Sturdivant, Issa Muhammad, Louis Williams, Isaac Martin and Alonzo Johnson provide the Blue Devils with a wealth of experience and leadership. Across the bracket, defending state champion Meadowcreek will take on South Georgia powerhouse and 2017 state champion Tift County. Meadowcreek has outscored its three postseason opponents by an average of 16 points per game, but Tift County’s road to the semifinals has been one of tight games and pivotal moments down the stretch. In the Sweet 16, the Blue Devils rallied back from 45-36 down before defeating Wheeler 58-56. Tift County then went on the road in the quarterfinals and advanced with a 47-43 upset over Discovery.

The defending champions are back in the semifinals after Lovejoy defeated Northview 65-53 in the quarterfinals to advance. Lovejoy’s junior captains – Genesis Bryant and Anaya Boyd – will lead the way. Boyd led all scorers with 21 points in Lovejoy’s victory over Grovetown in the second round. Valdosta, which beat Harrison 54-49 in the quarterfinals, is led by Ja’Mya Johnson with 13.3 points per game. Nia Allen averages 12.9 points per game. Valdosta awaits the defending champs after outscoring Harrison 33-13 in the final 12 minutes of its quarterfinal victory. Valdosta is in its first semifinal game since 2001. Lanier has not lost in 17 games after going 10-0 through region play and is riding momentum into its meeting with Forest Park. Lanier is led by seniors Kalen Surles and Mekala Fuller. Forest Park’s Sania Feagin is its leading scorer. Feagin averages 13.8 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game. Senior Alana Denson adds 11.6 points and 4.2 assists per game. Forest Park defeated Lee County 49-22 in the first round and then blew out Richmond Hill 59-7 in the second round. In the quarterfinals, it beat Creekview 54-48. Brunswick will enter its semifinal game against Tri-Cities riding momentum from it’s quarterfinal victory over Douglas County. Brunswick relied on a game-winning free throw from Sheydan Baggs with 7.4 seconds left to secure the win over Douglas County 60-59. Baggs, a senior, finished with 18 points in the quarterfinals. For Tri-Cities, advancing to this year’s semifinals avenges last year’s exit in the quarters at the hands of Jonesboro 72-64. The Bulldogs’ run through this year’s bracket includes victories over Lanier 84-68, Chattahoochee 7564 and Mundy’s Mill. Tucker has only lost four games this year and is riding a 10-game winning-streak entering its semifinal matchup against Heritage-Conyers. The Tigers kept their title hopes alive by after outlasting Evans in double-overtime in the second round 65-63. It earned its semifinal berth with a 65-58 victory over Gainesville. Heritage-Conyers has three players averaging double-figures. Senior Trelan Scott leads with 17.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game. Josh Guilford adds 16.4 points, three rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. Adrian Boykin helps with 10.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. The Patriots outlasted Alexander 72-69 in the quarterfinals.

Defending state champion Westlake carries a 28-0 record into the semis and features a roster filled with emerging stars. Sophomore Raven Johnson shot 13-of-15 from the field during her 33-point performance in the second round and is averaging 27.7 ppg this postseason. In the quarterfinals, Johnson was one of five Lions that netted double-figures. North Forsyth, which topped Roswell 35-28 in the quarterfinals, will need a similar defensive effort to slow down Westlake. North Forsyth trailed the Roswell 15-13 at the half, but was able to outscore the Hornets 9-4 in the third quarter and 13-9 in the fourth to return to the Final Four for the second-straight season. Collins Hill and Cherokee will meet on the other side of the bracket. In the quarterfinals, Collins Hill led Campbell 16-9 after the first quarter, but the Spartans went up 25-18 late in the second quarter before Collins Hill closed the half on a strong 7-0 run. Collins Hill was down 36-33 heading into the fourth, but answered with a 21-13 advantage in the final frame. Cherokee dominated Rockdale County 74-38 in the quarterfinals. Defending state champion Spalding squares off with Luella in Saturday’s opener. The Jags’ notorious defense that fueled last year’s run to the state crown has been seen throughout their current postseason run. After defeating Thomson 57-40 in the first round, Spalding held Hardaway to just 27 points and Marist to 30 points. Luella’s offense is capable of explosive scoring bursts as was seen in the Lions’ 63-53 win over Sandy Creek in the quarterfinals. The Lions used a 16-6 run in the second quarter to grow a 24-14 lead and maintained pace in the second half to earn its first-ever trip to the Final Four. Across the bracket, undefeated Carver-Columbus (30-0) has looked unstoppable all year. The top-ranked Tigers have nearly doubled their opponents through the first three rounds with an accumulated 223-114 margin of victory. Flowery Branch, however, may be up for the challenge. New to Class AAAA this season, the Falcons are building off last year’s run to the Class AAAAA state semis and carry their own impressive resume. The program defeated St. Pius 67-19 in the second round, held off a very talented Henry County squad 57-50 in the quarterfinals, and like Carver, have yet to lose to a Class AAAA opponent this season. Americus-Sumter trailed by double-digits on three separate occasions before dethroning two-time defending state champion Upson-Lee 59-53 in the quarterfinals. The Panthers next faced St. Pius in the quarterfinals and were even more impressive. Joshua Lusane, a 6-foot-8 forward, finished with a game-high 21 points and Americus-Sumter built a sizeable 31-13 lead before closing out host St. Pius 63-46. The Panthers’ opponent, Sandy Creek, is on a quest the program’s first-ever state title and carries a 17-game winning streak into the matchup. The Patriots have looked like a well-oiled machine this season, with versatile big man TJ Bickerstaff leading the team in points, rebounds, assists and steals per game. In Woodward Academy’s 58-50 win over Denmark in the quarterfinals, Michael Whitmore had 21 points and Walker Kessler finished with a triple double after posting 14 points, 16 rebounds and 10 blocks. Also, teammate Jacorrei Turner registered 10 points, eight rebounds and a pair of assists. The War Eagles’ opponent, Carver-Columbus, is coming off a dominant 72-47 win over Cartersville. The Tigers built a 55-30 lead heading into the fourth quarter and were led by a 27-point night by AJ Watts. Jalen King chipped in with 13 points, Devin Flowers dropped 11 and freshman DJ Riles finished with nine.

Johnson-Savannah is back in a familiar place after winning their first-ever state title last year with a 62-50 victory over Greater Atlanta Christian in the championship game. The Lady Atom Smashers feature three guards who can take over a game. Antalazia Baker leads with 15.6 points per game. Senior J’Mya Cutter is a speedy guard who is averaging 15.1 points per game and Jasmine Thompson contributes 13.6 points per game. Sonoraville is riding momentum from its quarterfinal victory over Rutland 75-51, the first quarterfinal game in program history. Alexa Geary led with 18 points and Maliyah Parks scored 16 points. Abby Chambers scored 12 points and Grace Darnell helped with 11 as the group looks to lead the Phoenix to their first finals. Beach’s three leading scorers – Jaida Burgess, Madison Evans and Kaila Rougier – could cause trouble for Hart County. Beach, a quarterfinalist last year, is riding a 12-game winning-streak with tournament victories over Brantley County (60-23), Central-Macon (50-28) and Dawson County (64-51) in the quarterfinals. Hart County is trying to get back to the dominance it enjoyed through the late 80’s and early 90’s when it won six-straight AAA titles from 1989-94. Hart earned its semifinal berth with a 59-51 victory over Tattnall County in the quarterfinals. Senior guards A’cira Teasley and Torrion Starks lead Hart’s group of four seniors. Morgan County is led by a trio of guards that could rival any in the state. The dynamic group of seniors features Tyrin Lawrence, who scored 31 points in Morgan’s 62-52 victory over Tattnall County in the quarterfinals. Alec Woodard can score from anywhere and provides space on the floor. Tying the trio together is Stevin Greene, the speedy guard who, went viral for an alley-oop dunk against Hart County earlier in the year. Windsor Forest is led by senior Zimbabwe Fields, a senior who averages 19.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Shamar Norman, a sophomore, averages 16.1 points per game. Dawson County is led by a group of three seniors – Luke Chism, Trey Pruitt and Ahmad Kamara. The Tigers are tall and have nine players measuring over 6-feet tall including Chism at 6-5. Hart County has weathered closely-contested matchups in each of its victories. In the first round, it beat Pace Academy 54-50. In the second round, it nipped North Murray 56-54 and in the quarterfinals outlasted Johnson-Savannah 67-63. Hart County lost to Westside-Macon 55-53 in the quarterfinals last year.

Model is hoping its third-straight trip to the semifinals will be the charm, as it has lost to Laney in the semis the past two years. In the quarterfinals, Model upended Josey 51-47 in an overtime thriller on the road as Madison Harper scored 22 points. Teammate Megan Kent put up 14 points, 21 rebounds, seven assists and six steals in the second-round win over Lamar County. Super sophomore Makayla Timpson can fill it up for Early County, as she poured in 23 points in the team’s Sweet 16 win at Woodville-Tompkins. Timpson was all-state and region player of the year last season as a freshman. Model seeks its first title, and Early County seeks its second (2003, Class AA). Douglass is fresh off a quarters win over previously undefeated Fitzgerald, outscoring Fitzgerald 38-20 in the second half to win 68-52. It’s the Lady Astros’ first semifinals appearance since 2007; the program has yet to win a state title. Laney, however, enters the semis as the heavyweight in the classification, having won all of its three state titles in the last four seasons (2015 in Class AAA, 2017-18 in AA). Laney dispatched Rockmart on Tuesday 62-41 as Jaiden Hamilton led the way with 23 points, Whitney Anderson scored 14 and Santanna Dennis had 13. The team has won its three playoff games by an average of 25 points. Elbert County stunned undefeated Woodville-Tompkins 63-52 on Wednesday night in Elberton, the team’s ninth-straight win. The Blue Devils took down the Wolverines thanks to 16 points from Jamison Syphore, 12 points from A.J. James and 10 points from Metrius Fleming. Therrell defeated Northeast on the road on Wednesday, prevailing 68-57 in Macon thanks to a strong late third and final quarter. Therrell’s Zyquan Morton heated up from beyond the arc, hitting six threes on his way to a team-leading 20 points. Teammates Ra’Sean Fredrick (18 pts) and Robbie Armbrester (15 pts) also came up big for Therrell, which is in the hunt for its first title. Elbert County seeks its first banner since the old Elberton High Blue Devils won in 1956. Vidalia and Laney will clash in the semifinals for the second-straight season, as Vidalia prevailed 49-45 last year. Vidalia edged South Atlanta 46-43 on Tuesday thanks to a 16-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters that gave the Indians a 41-31 lead. Vidalia’s Anthony Jones scored 16 points. Laney also used a strong defensive effort in the second half to best Callaway at home 63-44 on Wednesday, pulling away after a 37-30 halftime score. Marcus Paige set a career high with 22 points. Vidalia is seeking its first state championship; Laney has one title, a Class AA championship from 2012.

The semifinals matchup between Telfair County and Calhoun County is a rematch of last season’s secondround matchup where the Trojans sent Calhoun County home after a 63-54 defeat. This year, the Cougars aim to claim the school’s first ever girls basketball title with the help of sophomore duo Takia Davis and Maya Wims, the latter a strong center who can follow through under the basket. Telfair County has advanced into the semifinals three years in a row but are still on the hunt for the school’s first title. The Trojans only suffered one region loss during the regular season and have a stellar offensive duo in seniors India Wells and Brandy Mackey. Wells is averaging nearly 20 points per game while Mackey averages 14.8. After going 11-15 last season, Clinch County boasted a 21-6 regular season record to earn the team’s first playoffs berth in four years. The Panthers’ run to the semifinals featured a strong upset over top-seeded Greenville, showing that their turnaround season is no fluke. Marion County advanced to the finals last season, but fell to Greenville (first state title in school history). This season, the Eagles return three of their five starters giving them a good chance to take their season one step further. Senior center Ansley Whitley has been a force for Marion County, scoring 27 points while snagging 15 rebounds in their second-round game against ECI. Calhoun County’s run to the semifinals was built on a 30-0 undefeated record with the most recent win coming against Pelham in the Elite Eight. The Cougars failed to advance into the finals of last year’s state tournament following a close 80-78 loss to Montgomery County, but show no signs of going home early this time around. Offensively, there is no shortage of playmakers, with Bryan Smith, Jahmad Wiley, Quanderious Powell and Tykevious Curry all scoring in the double digits during the Cougars’ game against Pelham in the quarters. Wilkinson County has claimed five of the last six state titles and remains undefeated in finals appearances. Returning from last year’s championship team is senior Jaylon Lamar, who can drive hard or shoot the threeball. The Treutlen Vikings failed to advance past the first round last season, but now make their first semifinal appearance since 2016. Junior Kamron Jordan scored an electric 26 points in the Vikings’ Elite Eight game against Hancock Central, and will continue to find the basket alongside seniors Arkavias Lovett and Dakobin Thomas, who can also put up points. Irwin County fell 70-66 to Terrell County last year in the first round, but the Indians now move one step closer to their first state title. The offense has put up 80 points in each of their postseason games, but have also given up an average of 73 points to opposing teams. The Vikings will have to buckle down on defense to stop a Treutlen offense that has averaged 83 points per game.

The Wesleyan Wolves are averaging nearly 76 points a game this postseason as they take aim at grabbing the 14th title since 2002. The team is led by senior Callie Weaver, who is currentlyBY tiedGRAHAM for the schoolDAVID record for career charges taken and broke the season record with 33 so far. Pacing all scorers is junior A.C. Carter, who is averaging 17.7 points per game. The Calvary Day Cavaliers were knocked out of last year’s Elite Eight by the future champs Wesleyan. Freshman Mahkayla Premo has proved to be a great addition at point guard, averaging 18.5 points per game this postseason while sophomores Tynley Smeltzer and Zhani Thompson create a big defensive presence. Holy Innocents’ stellar regular season saw the Golden Bears go undefeated in their region. Their 72.5 points per game this postseason is only bested by defending champs Wesleyan. The offense has multiple play makers in freshmen Marya Hudgins, who is averaging 13.3 points per game, while sophomore Jillian Hollingshead is averaging 12.5. St. Francis will have a chance at redemption against Wesleyan, who knocked the Knights out of the semifinals last season. Looking to help send the Wolves home will be junior Savannah Samuel, who scored a team-high 21 points against Christian Heritage in the second round. Junior Kennedi Philson can go up and snag the rebound while junior guard Chandler Davis’ quick hands make her a constant threat on defensive. After falling to Aquinas 65-60 in the 2018 finals, the St. Francis Knights are back and ready to claim the school’s third state title in six years. Junior Dwon Odom has been electric this year, scoring 22 points per game while dishing out 7.1 assists per game. Junior Chase Ellis has also been a force on offense, scoring 14.6 points per game while leading the team with 8.2 rebounds per game. Looking for their first state title in school history, the Mt. Bethel Eagles narrowly avoided a quarterfinals loss to Greenforest to keep their season alive. Senior Stanley Eze has been a driving force for the Eagles, creating a huge presence in the paint to give the offense a reliable option. Junior Jordan Meka spaces the floor very well, making a quick basket before hurrying back to stand tall on defense. Also hunting for its first state title are the ELCA Chargers, who were denied the title last season following a 47-41 loss to eventual champion Aquinas in the semifinals. Senior Felix Uadiale has averaged 15.5 points per game in the postseason and showed his ability to crash the board when the power forward snagged 11 rebounds against Mt. Pisgah in the second round. Christian Heritage has averaged 64 points per game this postseason, taking out Wesleyan and denying North Cobb Christian their first semifinals appearance in school history on their trip to the semifinals. This season marks the Lions first trip to the semifinals in school history.
