A Message to Our Members Twenty-twenty-two was a momentous year for the ’Sconset Trust. Thankfully your generous donations were available to be used when several investment opportunities arose.

With funding through a Community Preservation grant and the record-setting donations earmarked for the Lighthouse from the 2022 Gala, the Trust hired International Chimney to restore, thoughtfully and beautifully, our iconic Lighthouse. The work revealed many surprises and caused a few delays; however, the Lighthouse stands stronger because of the restoration.

In response to the need for a historical guide to restore a house in ’Sconset while retaining its architectural significance and bringing the property into the modern age, the Trust commissioned Michael May to write and illustrate, Building with ’Sconset in Mind. The book was underwritten by a grant from the Judy Foundation. Art and Diane Kelly thoughtfully absorbed the printing costs to make the book available to all for free.

In recognizing the workforce housing needs of the village neighborhood, the Trust purchased 6 Elbow Lane, the Valentine Aldrich house. The main house, garage apartment and storage will be available for rent by our local businesses this summer.

An easement will be placed on the main house and property to preserve this part of the village core for future generations.

After much negotiation, the open space and oceanfront footage at 2 Gully Road were made available for purchase. A coastal dune remediation has been completed. The property is now a standard example of proper planting necessary to hold back erosion in coastal dunes. And the beach will forever be publicly accessible.

Once again, 2022 was momentous in furthering the Trust’s mission: preserving open land; conserving our cultural heritage; and protecting the character of ’Sconset by supporting our business core. The Trust cannot thank you enough for your continued and generous support.

Not so foggy but a whole lot of fun, the 2022 Jog in the Fog brought sunshine and record crowds. On July 23, 2022, registrations of more than 38 families and 60 individuals yielded a throng of well over 200 people at the finish line. There, at the foot of Sankaty Head Lighthouse, the hardiest participants cooled down from the 4.05k run from Ruddick Commons, celebrating alongside the walkers who joined them on Baxter Road. The scene at Sankaty was livened— especially among the youngest “joggers”—by restorative treats, water, and a jubilant atmosphere.

The ’Sconset Trust greatly appreciated the community’s enthusiastic participation in this event’s fifth year. Now a signature event for the Trust, the Jog in the Fog continues to shine.
