Walking with my dog to the Lighthouse and through Ruddick Commons, as I have been doing so often this month, I find myself pondering what ’Sconset would be like if the prescient individuals had not founded the’Sconset Trust 35 years ago.
In the following pages, you will get a glimpse of the past years’ activities through a timeline and from individuals who were involved in a few of our landmark moments. Our leaders, boards and supporters are acknowledged for adhering to and accomplishing so much of our original mission.
At the heart of our village is a thriving commercial, recreational and religious center, surrounded by a diverse and verdant green belt. This community led us all to Nantucket and specifically to this end of the island.
As we return to the island, we cannot help but be brought back to the history, beauty and serenity of our unique village. We can celebrate the past and anticipate our future from within the sanctuary of our island family.
Thank you all for being such loyal members of the ’Sconset Trust community. I look forward to welcoming you back to the village whenever you chose to return.

ne of the wonderful achievements of the Trust under the leadership of David Cheek and the then-serving board in 2012 was the purchase of what we now call Ruddick Commons. Nothing more clearly ties us and our village to the vision of our founders and is more core to our mission than the “Milestone on Milestone.”

May 1, 2012, marked the achievement of a remarkable vision to conserve open land at the western gateway of the historic village of ’Sconset.
In 1984 over 500 acres of land were owned by the family of Henry Coffin to the north of Milestone Road including the historic Old Siasconset Golf Course. Subsequently, the Coffin family sold approximately 250 acres to the founders of the Nantucket Golf Club. Perry Ruddick, one of the early visionaries of the Trust and its second President, steered the acquisition strategy over the years and in late 2004 articulated to the Trust Board and then to the commissioners of the Nantucket Island Land Bank what he thought should be the desired endgame:
The Land Bank should work closely with the Trust to establish a plan to purchase the remaining 116 acres of open land on the Coffin estate properties at 260 and 270 Milestone Road. The Land Bank will make an offer for the public golf course and the Trust will make an offer for the 45 plus acres to the east of the golf course. With one combined offer, the two conservation groups could retire one of the three remaining open parcels of land on the island of Nantucket. Integral to the plan would be the alignment of support from the Conservation Foundation and Nantucket Golf Club.
It took 8 years to bring Perry’s vision to fruition and it would not have happened without his guidance. Today, you will see the recognizable symbol of the Trust’s commitment to land conservation as you pass
the Milestone property—the Trust blue posts mark the boundaries of Ruddick Commons. The property stretches north to the Plainfield Road circle and is replete with marvelous examples of indigenous plants, shrubs and trees. In 2012 the Trust board envisioned the establishment of some casual and simple walking paths for public enjoyment. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Perry Ruddick and David Cheek. We combined the abutting 12-acre Sanders land off Burnell to create a 66-acre parcel. Yes, it takes a village and its friends – who donated over $8 million to the Coffin Land Campaign between 2012 and 2015.
In the fall of 2012, I was fortunate enough to walk the newly purchased property with Dave and Ben Champoux, the father-son landscaping duo who have been instrumental in working on all the Trust-owned lands since 1984. Following their expert guidance, we laid out the trails of Ruddick Commons with entry points on Milestone, Burnell, and Plainfield. Board members Jim Poole and Ken Richardson had a direct hand in reviewing and approving the layout for the project. Today, many locals and visitors enjoy the diversified flora and wooded features of Ruddick Commons throughout the year.
—Bob Felch has served as Board President and Executive Director of the ’Sconset Trust

Under the leadership of Marcella and Rhoads Zimmerman, the Coffin Land/ Ruddick Commons Campaign and the Felch Fund (honoring Bob Felch), raised over $8.5 million to purchase and maintain Ruddick Commons. Founding Keepers of the Land on page 11.

It’s been 13 years since the Sankaty Head Lighthouse was moved away from its eroding perch on ’Sconset’s North bluff. Can you believe it? And wherever all that time has gone since, it’s certain that Sankaty has been an enduring beacon for the past 170 years. That’s a lot of time. True, the light was moved in 2007, but the early prediction of its possible demise had begun at least 30 years earlier. While the early people involved in coming up with a solution were determined, there is no question that the ’Sconset Trust has been Sankaty’s most recent successor and caretaker. With the latter in mind, I have recently been honored by being appointed as your “civilian” caretaker of Sankaty Lighthouse. Why ever not? After all, I’m right in the neighborhood.
As you all know by now, the beacon at Sankaty is not operating. There was one of Nantucket’s usual nor’easters in February this year, which knocked out the power island-wide; when the power came back on it caused a surge that apparently burned out the 50-yearold motor that turned the beacon…knocking out the familiar flash that everyone has been accustomed to for years and decades and even a century or more. As your Lighthouse Keeper, I have been in contact with the
United States Coast Guard on a regular basis, and these young men and women assure me, and the Trust, and the Sankaty lovers all across the visible horizon, that this light will shine again. What the Aids to Navigation Team in Woods Hole says is that the old light’s technology is out of date, and they are looking to replace it with Light Emitting Diode technology; they tell me that it will be as strong and as bright and as effective as the previous beacon – they told me too that they understand how much we rely on this beacon in our lives; one hundred and seventy years and counting.
—Rob Benchley, Keeper
The Lighthouse Campaign and the Sankaty Head Lighthouse Maintenance Fund raised over $5.5 million to move the Lighthouse and continue to maintain the Light and the grounds. Special thanks to Lighthouse Campaign chairs Susan and Perry Ruddick and founding Keepers of the Light on page 11.

Thank you to Eileen Powers of Javatime Design and the contributors to this report: Clement Durkes, Bob Felch, Rob Benchley, Kris Kinsley and Jennifer Ahlborn. Please let us know if you see an error in the membership report so we can make the correction.
Most of all thanks to all the sung and unsung heroes who have supported the ’Sconset Trust for over 35 years. You are insuring that lemonade stands, Lighthouse hugs, 4th of July parades and visits at the post office will continue for future generations. Sankaty Head Lighthouse will be our sentinel as we work to preserve our historic structures, a vital village center and our green belt.
See you At Home Under the Light.
Elizabeth Green Grubbs, executive director
Our mission is to protect the unique character of the ’Sconset community through conservation of open land and preservation of historically and/or architecturally significant structures in and around the village.
