...to SCO Connect’s Lifelong Learning Programme 2012/13. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra is the nation’s chamber orchestra, and here at SCO Connect we want to provide opportunities for anybody in Scotland to get closer to the music. Scrapers & Tooters gives amateur musicians the chance to experience the feeling of sitting in an orchestra or wind band and working with professional conductors. Not to mention the opportunity to meet and be coached by players from the SCO. How about having a chat? Join us for a drink and a blether in our Comparing Notes discussion groups in Edinburgh and Glasgow, or unlock your creative spirit and compose some music! iCompose is an annual composition competition open to adults throughout Scotland. Through composing, listening, chatting and performing, there are plenty of ways to get involved. – The SCO Connect Team

Scrapers & Tooters
Cost Weekend £45 (£25 concessions) Singers £20 Scrapers & Tooters weekends are a great opportunity for amateur musicians to get together for nonpressurised weekends of music-making. We have three Scrapers & Tooters events this Season: Scrapers & Tooters Wind Farm Operantics
Orchestral weekend in Aberdeen Wind orchestra weekend in Edinburgh Orchestra and chorus weekend in St Andrews
You will rehearse as part of a full orchestra / wind orchestra / chorus, work with a professional conductor, and receive sectional coaching from Scottish Chamber Orchestra musicians. For all our weekends, some scraping, tooting or singing experience is required but previous knowledge of the music is not necessary. If you would like to know more about Scrapers & Tooters, or for details of how to book, please contact us at SCO Connect (see page 19). Places are allocated through a draw system. Participants register their name, and any places which are in high demand will be allocated by a lucky dip draw. Participants are also offered the chance to buy reduced price tickets for a concert linked to each Scrapers & Tooters weekend. You will receive more information about the offer after booking your place.

Scrapers & Tooters makes a welcome return to Aberdeen and we are delighted that conductor Ben Gernon is joining us for the weekend. Ben is the Conducting Fellow at the Guildhall School and is mentored by Sian Edwards, Sir Colin Davis, Charles Peebles and Martyn Brabbins. He made his BBC Proms debut last season conducting Tansy Davies’ Composer’s Portrait Concert for BBC Radio 3 and appeared with musicians from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in the St Magnus Festival, Orkney (2011), conducting Wind Power – a community project featuring over one hundred local wind and brass musicians. He has been invited to return to the festival to conduct the BBC Symphony Orchestra next year.

Operantics invites both instrumentalists and amateur singers to join us as an orchestra and chorus for a weekend of music-making. The orchestra will rehearse all day Saturday with the chorus joining rehearsals on the Sunday. SCO Chorusmaster Gregory Batsleer will be conducting this weekend. Friends and family can enjoy your hard work with an informal concert on the Sunday evening. Gregory took up the position of Chorusmaster of the SCO Chorus in December 2009. He is currently Conductor of Choirs at Manchester University, Principal Conductor of the Manchester Consort (of which he is co-founder) and Musical Director of Dorking Choral Society. From 2008-11, he was Director of the Hallé Youth Choir and worked regularly with the Hallé Choir and Hallé Children’s Choir as well as appearing as guest conductor with the Hallé.

Wind Farm is an opportunity for amateur musicians to play as part of a wind orchestra. Wind, brass and percussion players will spend the weekend rehearsing under a professional conductor, with SCO musicians on hand for sectional coaching and to give hints and tips! The weekend ends with an opportunity to show off all your hard work to friends and family with an informal performance. Craig Anderson is an award-winning tuba soloist and freelance player with a wealth of experience that has seen him play with numerous leading orchestras and ensembles. Craig plays regularly with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Northern Sinfonia, and conducts wind and brass bands throughout Scotland.

Orchestra in Residence at the University of St Andrews StAFCO 12/13 The St Andrews and Fife Community Orchestra meets weekly to make music and have fun! There are no auditions and all players are welcome, from adult learners and those who haven’t played for years, to advanced musicians. The music will include pieces performed by the SCO in its Younger Hall concerts. There will be informal performances to show off everyone’s hard work, but mainly the idea is to meet up, play and have fun.

Rehearsals: Wednesday evenings at the Younger Hall during term time starting 26 September, conducted by Jill Craig. The Orchestra will have five weeks off during the year when, instead of rehearsing, the members are encouraged to go to the SCO concert where there will be opportunities to meet players and attend a special StAFCO reception.
It was a rare privilege to be able to work with musicians of this calibre and the support we get in St Andrews from the SCO really is appreciated.

Comparing Notes
Do you enjoy a good chat about music? Similar to a book group, Comparing Notes are informal and in-depth discussion groups based around a series of four concerts. Not only do the groups offer the chance to learn about some of the music before you hear it, but they also give you the opportunity to reflect on the concerts, discuss them and much more. Comparing Notes groups take place in both Glasgow and Edinburgh. Participation is free but places are limited. Group Leader Jennifer Martin Jennifer Martin is a composer who has spent nearly 20 years working in music education. Her career began as Composer in Residence at Stewart’s Melville College and The Mary Erskine School, Edinburgh, and teacher of Composition at the City of Edinburgh Music School, while also lecturing in the Animation Department of Edinburgh College of Art, in the Drama Department of Queen Margaret College and within the Music Faculty at the University of Edinburgh, where she taught both Composition and Music in the Community. In 2003, she was appointed Learning Manager for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, where she devised and managed a wide range of educational initiatives, both in Scotland and in relation to international touring. Jennifer has now returned to her freelance career as a composer, music education consultant and project manager.
