hile Mt. San Antonio College is known for its stellar academic programs and world-class facilities, in recent years, the community college might be better known for its support services, designed to help students succeed regardless of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As challenging as the pandemic has been, we found there were some silver linings,” said Dr. William T. Scroggins, president and CEO of Mt. SAC. “The pandemic gave our team an opportunity to be creative and try new things. Along the way, we made some advancements and discovered some innovations that will help our students for years to come.”

Aside from transitioning thousands of classes online, the college also expanded its student support programs, so that issues outside of school would be less likely to derail student learning and achievement. For example, Mt. SAC expanded its basic needs program, growing its food pantry and finding it a permanent home. Mental health services multiplied for students as well as employees. Technology support programs, such as laptop loans, were quickly developed, launched and recalibrated along the way.

Three years after the emergence of COVID-19, state and federal officials are slowly ending the COVID-19 state of emergency as the situation shifts from a pandemic to an endemic. However, at Mt. SAC the college continues its commitment to its expanded wraparound services to support students.

“While the emergency is ending, our college and our community isn’t the same,” Scroggins explained.

“Mt. SAC is ensuring our services reflect the new needs of our community.”

he mission of the Alhambra Education Foundation (AEF) is to support and enhance the educational programs for all schools and students in the Alhambra Unified School District (AUSD). AEF is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of dedicated parents, community members, educators, and business professionals. Since AEF was established in 1993 as a fundraising partner of AUSD, over $3.3 million has been donated to various district programs including Teacher Mini-Grants, Student Leadership Seminars, Authors Festival, technology purchases, and Automated External Defibrillators for all sites. They have also distributed almost 40,000 books to TK3rd-grade students in partnership with Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) since 2005. AEF also runs the K-8 Summer Academy which offers proficiency and enrichment courses for students in a fun and engaging environment. Their WASC and NCAA Accredited High School Summer School program allows students in grades 9-12 to earn credits and get ahead.

AEF works very closely with AUSD to provide fiscal resources that make a difference for all children. Whether it is a kindergartener taking home his or her first book for their home library, providing music opportunities, supporting college and career counseling or having the All District Band march in the 2020 Rose Parade, AEF continues to provide funding that will change and enrich the lives and experiences of AUSD students. Its goal is to ensure that every student in the Alhambra USD has the opportunity, education, and tools they need to succeed in school and in life.

When they said I could write 300 words about being voted “Favorite Plumber,” I wondered what I should write about. Should it be about how we’ve been around 65 years? Or how our team of employees are the best trained and most knowledgeable in the business? Or about how we keep our prices low and fair?

But then I realized I needed to write something useful as a way of thanking people for voting for us. I thought the best way would be to share some advice that could help you avoid an unnecessary call to the plumber. So here goes….

1. Clogged toilet? Let it sit a few minutes before flushing again. Sometimes the water will have drained and the clog dissolved. If not, try using a plunger. Place the open end of the plunger completely over the drain and move it up and down to create suction. This often makes the clog go right down.

2. Water heater not working? Look at the temperature setting to ensure it wasn’t turned down accidentally. You’d be surprised at how many people turn down the temperature before a few days away and forget to tell their better half. Or, check the pilot light if the water heater runs on gas. If the pilot light isn’t on, the unit won’t produce hot water.

3. Lower water pressure than usual at a faucet? It could be mineral build-up. Unscrew the end on the faucet tap for cleaning. Soak the aerator (looks like a screen) in vinegar overnight to loosen the build-up. If you can’t remove the aerator or showerhead, put vinegar in a plastic bag. Tie the bag around the faucet so the aerator or showerhead sits in the solution.

Of course, when you do actually need a plumber, I hope you’ll remember my team and me.

any new clients first come into my office saying they “want a trust.” What those clients don’t know is that a trust is just one of the four essential estate planning documents that most attorneys recommend to ensure all of the client’s “bases are covered.” Put simply, these four essential documents are: 1. Revocable Living Trust: A trust helps your estate avoid probate court, a time-consuming and lengthy process, and allows you to choose your beneficiaries.

2. Pourover Will: A pourover will is a companion document that works with the trust to ensure your wishes are followed.

3. Durable Power of Attorney: A power of attorney specifies who you would want to make financial and property decisions for you if incapacitated and dictates what powers you give to that person.

4. Advance Health Care Directive: A health care directive specifies who you would want to make health and medical decisions for you if incapacitated and specifies what powers that person has (e.g., Do you want to stay on life support? Do you want to donate organs?).

In gathering information for a first meeting, I ask new clients to bring information on the following two aspects: 1. People: Information regarding the people involved with your estate plan—primarily, your information, your family’s information, your beneficiaries’ information, and information regarding the people who will be in charge.

2. Things: Information regarding the assets you own, such as real property, bank accounts, investment accounts, insurance, annuities, retirement accounts, timeshares, and business interests.

Although estate planning is by no means simple, with this basic understanding of the estate planning documents, and the information needed to begin the process, you are now far ahead of the average new estate planning client.
