When it comes to spending good times with family and friends, Castle Park leads the Inland area pack. A popular entertainment venue, The Castle (as its known among locals) contains four 18-hole mini golf courses of varying difficulties. The ride park has multiple attractions and thrill rides such as Merlin’s Revenge, Screamin’ Demon, the Dragons Tower, Flying Saucer, Sky Rider, Scrambler, Sea Dragon, Tilt-A-Whirl, a carousel, bumper cars, carnival midway games and more. Over at the arcade, there are dozens of upright and tabletop video games (Ms. Pac-Man, anyone?), Skee-ball, air hockey and pop-a-shot. During the summer season, Buccaneer Cove offers water slides and all manner of water play. Recently, the amusement park introduced a reimagined and expanded Saw Mill Plunge water log ride, a spruced-up entry plaza with new signage and

Anyone who arrives at Echo Hills Golf Course immediately sees a sign that proclaims it as the “friendliest golf course in the San Jacinto Valley.” Ed Dover created the nine-hole, 26-acre course on the site of what was once a chicken ranch. He converted an old chicken shed into the clubhouse that’s still in use today. Echo Hills opened in 1959 and shut down in 2010 due to high water costs. Valley-Wide Recreation took over the course two years later and following a rehabilitation, it reopened in 2013. A 2,229-yard, par-35 course, Echo Hills is geared toward beginners and senior golfers looking for a round that isn’t overly challenging. Although the course is considered easy to walk, cart rentals are available. Tee times should be arranged over the phone. Classes are held at various times throughout the year in conjunction with Grandfathers for Golf, an organization that attracts youth to the game and teaches underprivileged children and others how to play the game.

The Merc, located adjacent to the Old Town Temecula Community Theater, is an intimate space that began putting on music performances in 2006. Both are housed in The Mercantile, one of the city’s original buildings dating back more than a century. Several live music series are held various nights throughout the month.

These include the straight ahead Jazz at The Merc hosted by Sherry Williams; Country Live! at The Merc, with a house band backing up valley newcomers, artist showcases and songwriter spotlights; Speakeasy at The Merc, focusing on Prohibition-era jazz of the 1920s-‘40s, where Second Hand Jazz Band and vocalist Rosalie Porter rotate with prominent SoCal traditional jazz artists; Brazilian and Latin jazz with local and international musicians and Classics at The Merc, with California Chamber Orchestra members in different configurations. Aside from music, The Merc also books comedians, theater productions and art shows.

Temecula celebrates both its local heritage and today’s culture in fine art in the performance space at The Merc, one of Old Town’s original buildings.

VIP has been a prime gathering place and safe haven for the local LGBTQ+ community since

1992. It initially served only beer and wine, but eventually expanded to include a full-service bar and kitchen, plus a 2,000-squarefoot smoking patio with additional bar. Open Wednesday-Sunday, it presents drag bingo, karaoke, a drag brunch, and various DJs. There are happy hour specials and pool tables, too. Food menu items run the gamut from sweet potato fries, chicken wings and street tacos to quesadillas, a grilled chicken dinner, burgers as well as dessert. Patron Sarah SN of Riverside said on Yelp that the VIP is her “favorite bar” in town with a “very friendly staff. Love them. They have tasty food, too … the drag shows are fun.”

In 1983, Riverside native Victor Krummenacher co-founded Camper Van Beethoven, the Redlands alternative band best known for popular college/modern rock radio and MTV tunes “Take the Skinheads Bowling” and the Status Quo cover “Pictures of Matchstick Men.”

The group split after seven years but has been active since the late 1990s with the bassist (whose 10th solo album “Silver Smoke of Dreams” emerged in 2021). He joined Portland, Oregon’s Eyelids for the indie rock group’s new album, “A Colossal Waste of Light,” produced by Peter Buck of R.E.M.

What follows is Krummenacher recalling the live vocal performance that impressed him the most: The Who, at the AutoWest Amphitheatre (now Toyota Amphitheatre), north of Sacramento, July 4, 2002:

“Seeing The Who a couple days after John Entwistle died wasn’t prime Who, as you can imagine. I think people were stunned they were even playing. Still, they soldiered through the set. Towards the

end, they played ‘Love, Reign O’er Me’ and (Roger) Daltrey’s scream at the end of the song was, without a doubt, the most primal scream I’ve ever heard. The whole crowd seemed stunned by it. The grief was palpable.”

1996, the entertainment facility’s miniature golf course features two 18-hole courses with waterfalls, an old western mining town theme and sand traps. Once visitors have finished a round of golf, they can head over with the kids to the two-seater go karts (plus rookie go karts for tots), assorted rides (Frog Hopper, Western train ride, teacups), compete in laser tag teams, partake in video games in the arcade and test their swinging skills in the batting cages (utilizing a calibrated slow pitch softball at 14 mph; 35-70 mph baseball; the slow pitch arc ranges 10 to 12 feet). Lorenzi Estate Vineyards & Winery opened in 2013, but the Lorenzi family had been making wine as a hobby for many years. The vineyards are part of a site planted in the 1960s. The company produces artisan wines with few added ingredients and creates them in a sustainable way. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Grenache, and Zinfandel are among the 10 varietals grown on the estate. The Eaton Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy is among the world’s largest. Originally containing 7,500 hardback books from the 19th and 20th centuries and owned by Dr. J. Lloyd Eaton, UCR’s Tomas Rivera Library acquired it in 1969. Currently, the collection has more than 300,000 items, including pulp magazines, fanzines, shooting scripts from sci-fi films/TV series, comic books, anime, posters and more.

One unique book on view, “The Blazing World,” by Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle, was a recent purchase. The utopian novel, written in 1666, is notable for being an early work of science fiction authored by a woman, says Eaton Curator Dr. Phoenix Alexander. “We have an original printing here at UCR” and a “beautifully illustrated modern edition, which is a really eye-catching item to display.”

Among his favorite items are Issue #1 of Amazing Stories magazine (1926). “It really cemented science fiction as a genre.” Alexander also singled out the “amazing” Marvel Comics debuts of Black Panther, Blade and Luke Cage.
