Shopping & Services

Now in its 29th year, our annual Best of Inland Empire reader survey is chock-full of the region’s top destinations, attractions and local businesses.

Along with tried-and-true recommendations for places to go, things to do and the best shopping, dining and services, we’ve added a few new categories like Best Boba Tea House and Pho/Noodle House. Best Escape Room and Wine Tasting also made the list this year.

But whether we’re talking boba or craft brewery, the purpose of Best of Inland Empire remains the same: To provide recommendations for the best ways to experience the Inland Empire for our readers as voted on by our readers.

True to form, Press-Enterprise readers didn’t miss a beat. You cast thousands of votes celebrating the IE’s best. In fact, the vote counters reported tallying an average of more than 3,000 votes per day during the voting period. The businesses and attractions you voted for in scores of categories are in the publication you’re reading now.

In Riverside and San Bernardino counties, we have countless adventures at our fingertips. And the Inland region continues to gain momentum as one of Southern California’s most coveted

EDITOR’S PICK: BEST LIVE THEATER

FOX PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

3801 Mission Inn Ave., Riverside 951-779-9800, riversidelive.com

Upon entering The Fox Performing Arts Center, visitors immediately get a sense of the theater’s history, which dates back 95 years and started as a vaudeville and movie house. Classic light fixtures mimic the originals; the lobby ceiling is adorned with shields and various patterns; there is retro-design carpeting, ornately sculptured crown moldings, a grand staircase leading to the upper seating sections and other charming features. The building’s

Spanish Colonial Revival-style exterior is also a marvel to observe. The varied programming slate ranges from Latin, country and pop/rock concerts to Broadway, comedy and children’s shows throughout the year. [ A nod also goes to The Box, an intimate space next door, which hosts community and professional theater groups, meetings, receptions and more. ]

Upcoming Fox events include Celtic Thunder, Sept. 13; Benise, Sept. 14; Atlantic Starr, Oct. 5; Psychedelic Furs, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Nov. 6; Kathleen Madigan, Nov. 23; and “Mean Girls,” Dec. 30-31.

Hungry?

There’s a wide array of great dining options for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night eats. And while many of our reader favorites are national chains, several others were born right here in the IE.

BEST BAKERY/PIES

1 POLLY’S PIES RESTAURANT & BAKERY

Multiple locations pollyspies.com

“We continually strive to offer you excellent service, the freshest [and] tastiest ‘homestyle’ cooking and baking (almost everything is made from scratch), all at very reasonable prices,” it reads on the Polly’s Pies website. And the chain — with 13 locations in Riverside, Los Angeles and Orange counties — truly delivers, say its loyal customers. Check out the menu, which includes all the classics and more for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Weekday and seasonal specials are available throughout the year. Be sure to save room for a slice of pie; there are more than a dozen varieties including three apple, two banberry, two cherry, lemon meringue and a pair of cream pies (chocolate and coconut). Better yet, order a whole pie to take home.

OLIVIA’S MEXICAN RESTAURANT 9447 Magnolia Ave., Riverside 951-689-2131

oliviasmexicanrestaurant.com

Olivia’s Mexican Restaurant, which grew from humble origins, is the dream of founders Tony Cabral and his wife, Olivia. Their journey began in 1976, when Tony purchased an old truck and converted it into a snow cone wagon. The couple sold the treats, made using his family’s syrup recipe, in the neighborhood for 25 cents each. Sales went well, so Tony soon added another truck and opened a small neighborhood store that also sold snow cones. The menu was eventually expanded to add hamburgers, tacos, homemade tamales, barbecue lamb head and menudo. In 1978, the couple opened their restaurant, named after Olivia. The Cabral family today runs the business with help from the couple’s daughter Anna, son Mario, and daughter-in-law Vanessa. Olivia’s offers a large menu of Mexican food favorites including albondigas soup, a variety of fajitas and burritos, tamales, carne asada, enchiladas, chile rellenos, tacos, taquitos, shrimp, quesadillas and flan. There’s a special menu for breakfast, which is available all day for those who crave huevos rancheros, a breakfast burrito or chorizo and eggs for dinner.

RIVERSIDE’S CALIFORNIA

MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Information: ucrarts.ucr.edu

Coming this fall and winter are a pair of exhibits that showcase diverse aspects of photography.

First up is “Digital Capture: Southern California and the Pixel-Based Image World,” a show featuring the works of 40-plus artists, which has been in the works for about four-and-a-half years.

“It’s a very ambitious, all-original show,” says Douglas McCulloh, the CMP’s interim executive director and senior curator of exhibitions. “It shows Southern California’s role in the emergence of digital capture right up to AI.”

Two examples: The idea of digital photography was dreamed up in the early 1960s by Eugene Lally, an engineer at Pasadena’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory; and, in the 1990s, a team of JPL researchers worked to improve image sensor technology that powers the cameras in today’s smartphones.

Running Sept. 21 to Feb. 2, “Digital Capture” is part of the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time initiative. There will be an artist reception at the museum from 3-6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26; admission is free.

Then, starting Dec. 21, “Lost in Wilderness” takes over featuring the work of Ansel Adams — not the American landscapes (Yosemite, etc.) that made him a household name, but rather images from a six-year project commissioned in the 1960s by the University of California.

“We see a great photographer working kind of off-center,” McCulloh says. “We witness an artist swimming hard against the tide of relentless change.”

Lowe’s and Home Depot are the largest home improvement retailers by sales in the United States and worldwide. Home Depot has more than 2,300 U.S. locations; Lowe’s comes in with 1,700; and both are well-represented in the Inland Empire.

Lowe’s and Home Depot offer just about everything you need for the home, a home renovation project, or to fix common things around the house. Both retailers have large departments offering a wide array of appliances including refrigerators and washing machines, patio furniture, plants and gardening accessories, lighting fixtures and supplies, hardware, plumbing supplies and bathroom fixtures, tools, paint and painting supplies, lumber, and much more.

These stores also are fun to shop at. How many times have you driven to your local Home Depot or Lowe’s to pick up one thing like a can of paint or some new flowers, only to come home with a truck full of additional purchases? These mega-stores have so much to offer at reasonable prices that it’s hard for many shoppers to resist buying another plant or a new front door rug while running that errand for one item!

Store associates in each department will help schedule any needed installations and repair services. If the item you seek isn’t in stock at your local store, the associates will hop online to see if the item is available at another store or can be ordered from the manufacturer.
