Big Data in Health Care

B

ig data in health care is big and it’s here now. It goes beyond the data driven by our EHRs. It includes genomic sequencing, pharmaceuticals, medical imaging, payer records, government agencies, smart phones and even medical wearable devices. The volume is immense and travels through a massive digital universe worldwide. It promises to improve health care and reduce health costs.

The following are examples of how data analytics can improve health care.

Staffing – it is a challenge in hospitals to predict staffing levels needed. By using algorithms based on years’ of data, some hospitals have been able to predict the amount and types of

patients so that staffing can be more accurate and improved health care provided. Medical wearables such as Fitbit or the Apple Watch collect real time data that, as a part of a patient’s health record, can alert not only the patient, but their health care team of a need to seek medical care. In tackling the opioid epidemic, aside from having access to MAPS, some data analytics have been able to identify >700 risk factors that predict whether an individual is at risk for abusing opioids.

Other areas that can be advanced by applications for big data include population health by identifying disease trends and developing health strategies based on socioeconomics, demographics and geography. The reduction of adverse medication events

can occur through data to spot errors and adverse reactions. Data mining and analytics have the potential to identify the causes of disease and improve treatment and management.

As exciting as these goals seem, big data analytics is fraught with road blocks and challenges. Data is diverse. It comes in many formats and context, and is difficult to merge into databases. Expertise and data scientists are needed to manipulate the data so that it is useable. Patient privacy and security, HIPAA, provides its own challenge. Perhaps our biggest challenge will be in seeing that an individual person sits in front of us.

Contribute to New AMA-RAND Research The RAND Corporation and American Medical Association are conducting research to better understand and describe how physician practices in a variety of specialties and practice arrangements (independent, IPA, health system, etc.) that have integrated behavioral health care into the range of services they offer. If you’ve integrated behavioral health care in your practice, whether you’re in the early stages or have a well-established program, we are asking for your participation in this research project.

This phone interview-based research will enable the AMA to provide physicians with training and resources needed to effectively implement and manage behavioral health care in their practices. The Big Picture

W

hen Ben Franklin, during the heady atmosphere of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, warned those present that, “We must, indeed, all hang together or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately,” he was reminding everyone that the success of the Revolution was anything but assured, many obstacles stood in the way, not least of which was Great Britain, the mightiest empire the world had ever known, which was known to deal harshly with those who opposed it’s rule. Optimism is a good thing, but it must be tempered with a dose of reality.

No one knows this better than physicians; everything we see, everything we do, has a measure of morbidity and mortality.

Let us consider present-day Saginaw.

Things are looking up. The hospitals are busy, the factories are humming, employment is up, CMU is here, Dow is here, and Delta and SVSU are here. Ours is a great community, with a rich history, strong institutions, forward-thinking leaders, rich family ties. We should be optimistic about the future, right? Sure, but, like Ben Franklin in 1776, we must be realistic as well. We face serious

challenges. Our profession is still in crisis mode. Our community, in many ways, is also in crisis mode, facing an aging population, an opiate crisis, stagnant wages, poor educational achievement and an epidemic of chronic disease caused by poor health habits.

Traditionally, our job as physicians has been to manage the 20 percent of the economy that deals with health care and it is the job of everyone else, government, business, foundations, etc., to deal with the other 80 percent. Nothing’s that simple, however. That 20 percent and that 80 percent, it turns out, are ever-sotightly intertwined such that they affect each other in complicated and myriad ways. Consider a few: • Unemployed persons are challenged to eat, sleep, and exercise in healthful ways, thereby getting sick more often, putting a strain on the medical system…you.

• Persons with poor educational achievement don’t understand anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and self-care. They make poor patients. They also make poor workers, so businesses cannot grow.

Our community as a whole suffers.

• Unemployed, poor patients, stressed

patients have more pain, then they overuse and become addicted to opiates, with all that entails.

• When a sick person doesn’t get proper medical care, for whatever reason, and can’t work, then his employer loses the ability to compete in the global marketplace, and may fail.

The point is that medical care and the economic health of the community are intertwined. This has been obvious to many of us over the years, but has finally started to gain traction amongst community leaders in the last couple of years, and has culminated recently with the formation of a “multi-stakeholder” initiative THRIVE (Transforming Health Regionally in a Vibrant Economy).

The acronym is quite appropriate…we all know that we need to transform the healthcare business, and we all know that working on healthcare alone, unless patients have jobs - good jobs, will never be successful. THRIVE brings together the full force of regional businesses and healthcare organizations, mixing continued on page 7

in some serious money and cooking up a vigorous effort at solving our economic and health issues AS A WHOLE rather than piecemeal.

For instance, we now have a list of 35 separate needed interventions. That is a lot! But, fortunately, we also have amassed a vast database of health and economic data, as well as, a sophisticated computer simulation that models what happens to the entire community when money is allocated to a single effort, such that we can get the most bang for our buck.

I’ve been following these efforts and am quite impressed.

In fact, I have volunteered to write a regular Internet Blog detailing the project as it goes forward. A sampling of SCMS physicians involved include Drs. Tom Veverka, Cathy Baase, George Kikano and Sam Shaheen. The success of this enterprise is anything but assured, but I am expecting that the wonderful people in our medical community will assuredly “hang together” with the wonderful people in our community as a whole, and I am optimistic of our ultimate success.

Covenant Earns Accreditation from American College of Radiology Covenant HealthCare has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in radiation oncology as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Radiation oncology (radiation therapy) is the careful use of high-energy radiation to treat cancer. A radiation oncologist may use radiation to cure cancer or to relieve a cancer patient’s pain.

Patient care and treatment, patient safety, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Radiation Oncology Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement.

Physician Well-Being Empathy: A Critical Ally in Battling Physician Burnout Sara Berg, Senior Staff Writer - AMA Wire® With almost half of doctor’s nationally experiencing burnout, one medical group turned to physician empathy training. Learn how empathy reduces burnout.

At the Northeast’s largest nonprofit independent medical group, 48 percent of physicians reported burnout. That high rate of physician burnout - fed by the competing demands of contemporary medical practice - can make cultivating a healthy sense of empathy a struggle. That, in turn, can negatively affect professional satisfaction, which is why this medical group’s journey to reducing burnout began with physician empathy training.

While physicians are commonly viewed as being empathetic, their behavior might come across differently to the patient in the room. The physician might seem rushed, distracted or trying to squeeze too much into one visit while simultaneously entering notes on the computer, said Steven Strongwater, MD, president and CEO of Atrius Health. The Boston-area medical group’s 1,300 clinicians deliver care to more than 720,000 patients.

Sixty-one percent of employees and 76 percent of CEOs say it is important for organizations to exhibit empathy, Dr. Strongwater said at the International Conference on Physician Health in Toronto. The event was co-sponsored by the AMA, Canadian Medical Association and British Medical Association.

“It turns out this is a really good business investment,” he said. “It is the soft stuff, but people basically said, ‘I didn’t think I needed this, but it turned out to be really helpful.’” While there is no “silver bullet,” Dr. Strongwater added that it is important to keep working toward improving physician satisfaction. When physicians show empathy, it can forge deeper connections with patients, leading to greater professional satisfaction and joy in work for physicians.

Here is what Atrius Health learned from providing physician empathy training for doctors and other staff members: It takes time, dedication “How do you convey that you are really in the moment with your patient?” asked Dr. Strongwater. “This is not for the faint of heart.” It took many hours of prep time to design the class, create written materials, curriculum, videos and references for staff and physician empathy training, as well as, the post work, data processing, data analysis and reporting. Internally, the

classes are called “forums” instead of “training.”

With preparation complete, 600 classroom-hours were devoted to reaching more than 4,000 staff members, including physicians. Each interdisciplinary session lasted two hours, teaching skills such as how to reliably convey empathy to patients and families.

“We had docs in the room with registration staff and medical assistants they had never seen before,” Dr. Strongwater said.

“We created a dialogue to talk amongst ourselves and to create that sense of a team.”

Heart, head, heart The secondary goal was to create and encourage empathy toward one another during daily work. One lesson was to convey empathy in less than 10 seconds by remembering the mantra of “heart, head, heart.”

“You encounter someone and you say something from your heart, ‘It must be difficult not to be feeling well. Thank you for coming in,’” said Dr. Strongwater. “Then you do something that is important or more serious, ‘What brings you into the office?

Do you have a problem today?’”

At the end of their care, physicians should say something from the heart again, such as, “I hope that you feel better soon,” or “It was great that you are working so hard on that goal.” Physicians are also encouraged to use this approach when writing their emails.

Empathy and patient adherence are connected, said Dr. Strongwater. “Patients are more likely to follow your advice when they know you care about them.”

“We definitely had an impact on moving the needle, so empathy training does work,” he said. “Once you go through it, even though it is soft - it is impactful.”

Cleveland Clinic’s Doctor Peer Coaches Build Physician Resiliency Sara Berg, Senior Staff Writer - AMA Wire® Changes in the health care landscape continue to add to stressors for physicians. With doctor burnout being a major driver of physician turnover, one of the peer-coaching programs is showing efficacy in an impressive respect. Participation in the program substantially affected the decisions of 25 percent of coachees and 22 percent of coachees - to stay at the Cleveland Clinic.

“This is a dual benefit not only for the coachees, but coaches too,” said Andrea Sikon, MD, at the International Conference on Physician Health in Toronto. The event was co-sponsored by the AMA, Canadian Medical Association and British Medical Association. Launching training sessions In a decade, the Cleveland Clinic grew from 300 to 3,000 physicians, causing the professional staff to crave relationships.

The peer-coaching program allowed the team to facilitate relationships among these physicians.

As an invite-only program, the training includes a four-day intensive - two days of training and a week off for physicians to practice with one another followed by another two days.

Each session is 90 minutes, and occurs in the evenings with quarterly coaching sessions also available.

The program mirrors communication skills training, said Dr. Sikon, to improve expressions of empathy and listening.

Pre- and post-training evaluations help to analyze coaches’ performance, while also looking at engagement, satisfaction, resilience and use of skills outside the program.

Helping physicians meet their goals Annual surveys have shown that 64 percent of coaches and 71 percent of coachees found the peer-coaching experience substantially affected their goals. The four highest goals for coachees were leadership, work-life balance, relationship building and transition. For coaches, the goals were to enhance their communication and leadership skills.

“We have seen significant use of those skills outside of the direct coaching relationship,” said Dr. Sikon. “They are using it

and saying, ‘I am a better leader because of using these skills.’

People are using these skills not just with one another,” she said. “They are using them with their patients.”

From all walks of medicine Core faculty members choose and nominate individuals in different specialties based on existing relationship centered skills and emotional intelligence capacity. Coaches who complete training can also recommend physicians they think would be good coaches. Most physicians have 20-40 years in practice, but about 10 percent have been in practice for less than 10 years. A small number of physicians are also retired or nearing retirement.

“You spend your whole life immersed in your professional identity that is tied up in medicine, and then what do you do?”

Dr. Sikon said. “This is another way to engage that experience with those individuals and their passion in a different way after retirement.”

What I’ve Learned From My Tally of 757 Doctor Suicides The Washington Post | By Pamela Wible January 13, 2018

Five years ago, I was at a memorial. Another suicide. Our third doctor in 18 months. Everyone kept whispering, “Why?” That was when I decided I had to find an answer. So I started counting dead doctors. I left that memorial service with a list of 10. Today, I have 757 suicides on my registry. And I began writing and speaking about why doctors die by suicide and why it’s so often hushed up.

The response was huge: So many distressed doctors (and medical students) wrote and phoned me. Soon I was running continued on page 18

a de facto international suicide hotline from my home. To date, I’ve spoken to thousands of suicidal doctors; published a book of their suicide letters; attended more funerals; interviewed hundreds of surviving physicians, families and friends. I’ve spent nearly every waking moment over the past five years on a personal quest for the truth of “why.” Guilt, bullying and exhaustion are big factors. Here are some of the things I’ve discovered while compiling my list and talking to so many people: High doctor suicide rates have been reported since 1858.

Yet more than 150 years later, the root causes of these suicides remain unaddressed.

Physician suicide is a public health crisis. One million Americans lose their doctors to suicide each year.

Many doctors have lost a colleague to suicide. Some have lost up to eight during their career - with no opportunity to grieve.

We lose way more men than women. For every female physician on my suicide registry, there are seven men. Suicide methods vary by region and gender. Women prefer to overdose and men choose firearms. Gunshot wounds prevail out west. Jumping is popular in New York City. In India, doctors have been found hanging from ceiling fans.

Male anesthesiologists are at highest risk. My registry also shows that most of these doctors kill themselves by overdose. Many have been found dead in hospital call rooms where they are supposed to be resting between cases.

Lots of doctors kill themselves in hospitals. They jump from hospital windows or rooftops. They shoot or stab themselves in hospital parking lots. They’re found hanging in hospital chapels. Physicians often choose to die in a place where they’ve been emotionally invested and wounded.

“Happy” doctors also die by suicide. Many doctors who die by suicide appear as the happiest, most well-adjusted people on the outside. Just back from Disneyland, just bought tickets for a family cruise, just gave a thumbs-up to the team after a successful surgery - to mention only a few cases from my list - and hours later they shoot themselves in the head.

Doctors are masters of disguise. Even fun-loving docs who crack jokes and make patients smile all day may be suffering in silence.

Family members of doctors who have killed themselves are also at high risk of suicide. Sometimes even by the same method. A year after a depressed Kaitlyn Elkins, a star thirdyear medical student, chose suicide by helium inhalation, her mother, Rhonda, died by the same method. At the mother’s funeral, her husband told me, “Medical school has killed half my family.”

Suicidal doctors are rarely homicidal. On the list of suicides I’ve compiled, only two percent (15) also involved homicide. Seven of those homicides were by male physicians who killed a female spouse/girlfriend (all in health care - four nurses, a nursing student, a pharmacy tech and a dentist) before killing themselves. Three male physicians murdered their young children before taking their own lives. Another strangled his disabled adult daughter before killing himself.

Less than one percent of all doctor suicides involve homicide of their children. Of the three cases involving young children, all the suicide victims were having relationship problems with the mother. One also killed the mother.

Patient deaths hurt doctors. A lot. Even when there’s no medical error, doctors may never forgive themselves for losing a patient. Suicide is the ultimate self-punishment. In several cases, the death of a patient seemed to be the key factor in pushing them over the edge.

Malpractice suits can be devastating. Humans make mistakes. Yet when doctors make mistakes, they’re publicly shamed in court, on TV and in newspapers (that live online forever). Many continue to suffer the agony of harming someone else - unintentionally - for the rest of our lives.

Academic distress kills medical students’ dreams. Failing medical-board exams and not getting a post-medical-school assignment in a specialty of choice has led to suicides. Doctors can be shattered if they fail to gain a residency. Before his suicide, Robert Chu, unmatched to residency, wrote a letter to medical officials and government leaders calling out a system that he said ruined his career.

Assembly-line medicine kills doctors. Brilliant, compassionate people can’t care for complex patients in 15-minute slots. When punished or fired by administrators for “inefficiency” or “low productivity,” doctors may become suicidal. Pressure from insurance companies and government mandates crush these talented people who just want to help patients. Many doctors cite inhumane working conditions in their suicide notes.

Bullying, hazing and sleep deprivation increase suicide risk. Medical training is rampant with deplorable conditions - such as working nonstop for 24 hours or more - that are not permitted in other industries. Physicians report hallucinations, life-threatening seizures, depression and suicide due to sleep deprivation. Fatigued doctors have felt responsible for harming patients. Resident physicians are now “capped” at 28-hour shifts and 80-hour workweeks. If they “violate” work hours (by caring for patients), they can be forced to lie on their time cards or be written up as “inefficient” and sent to a psychiatrist for stimulant medications. themselves for fear of harming a patient as a result of their extreme sleep deprivation.

Blaming doctors increases suicides. Words such as “burnout” are often employed by medical institutions to shift blame to doctors for their emotional distress while deflecting attention from unsafe working conditions. When doctors are punished with loss of residency positions or hospital privileges for occupationally-induced mental health conditions, they can become even more hopeless and desperate.

Doctors who need help don’t seek it because they fear mental health care won’t remain confidential. So they drive out of town, pay cash and use fake names to hide from state medical boards, hospitals and insurance plans out of fear that they will lose state licensure, hospital privileges and health plan participation. (Even if confidential care were available, physicians in training have little time to access care when working 80 to 100 or more hours per week.)

Some doctors develop on-the-job post-traumatic stress disorder. This is especially true in emergency medicine, my registry suggests. One day, they just snap - like this ER doctor who contacted me after he tried to kill himself: “My wife once asked how we do it in the ER, to be there for everybody’s worst day and also for their best. My worst day was almost my last.

Funny thing is, I was as happy as I had ever been in my personal life. My decision to end it all was 100 percent work-related.”

The doctor had treated a girl in the ER for flu and then released her. She ended up back in the ER 30 hours later in respiratory distress and eventually died. His job was in jeopardy. “When I got home in the early-morning hours, I was just sad. I cried for the girl and her family. I cried myself to sleep and woke up still sad... There’s a saying we have in the emergency room when we witness trauma and death among the innocent: A little piece of my soul died... We’re almost never offered counseling, and in the end you get the jaded emergency doctor who struggles to care. My psychologist says it wasn’t just the last girl. It was trauma after trauma after trauma.” He took a handful of pills but ended up surviving and is grateful for it.

Still, he writes “Emergency medicine once defined me. I loved going to work every day. I think at one point I was a good doc who cared about his patients. Now I am just very anxious even thinking about going back to work.”

No time for our own pain. Like everyone else, doctors have personal problems. We get divorced, have custody battles, infidelity, disabled children and deaths in our families. Yet working 60 to 80 or more hours per week immersed in our patients’ pain means we often have no time to deal with our own. I’m always surprised by how often nonmedical people tell me they are shocked that doctors have the same mental-health issues and personal problems that everyone else has.

Some people in the medical profession believe the public doesn’t need to know that doctor suicide is a real problem, as if a healer being in pain is shameful and would frighten patients.

(A few years ago, I was honored to be invited to a special event hosted by the American Medical Association. They were interested in previewing a TEDMed talk I was scheduled to give about doctor suicides. But shortly before the event, I was disinvited: People were “uncomfortable’’ with the topic, I was told.)

After collecting so many stories over the past five years, I believe that ignoring doctor suicides just leads to more doctor suicides. Suicide is preventable, but we have to stop with the secrecy and face up to what it is about being a doctor that can be so emotionally difficult. I am hopeful the documentary “Do No Harm,” by Emmy-winning filmmaker, Robyn Symon, will raise awareness on both points. In the meantime, medical institutions need to openly acknowledge the problem and make changes to support the mental health of doctors and medical students.

Healers, after all, also need healing.

A Look at Auto No-Fault Reform in 2019 Background In the eyes of Republican legislative leadership, auto nofault reform is the number one legislative issue for 2019. Not coincidentally, the first bill introduced in the Senate – Senate Bill 1 – was the vehicle bill for ensuing no-fault reform. That bill was introduced on January 15, 2019, by Senator Aric Nesbitt (R-Lawton). Several other bills have been introduced that may be under consideration as deliberations unfold around a larger package.

Senate Bill 1 was referred to the Committee on Insurance and Banking, chaired by Senator Lana Theis (R-Brighton). The multi-section bill includes intent language, which will be filled in as priorities are identified. One section of the bill specifically delineates the goal of allowing individuals 62 or older to optout of personal injury protection if they have lifetime health care benefits. READ MORE.

In your personal message, you’re encouraged to remind the committee that while you’re tired of being charged outlandish rates, you strongly oppose any reform that would result in lifesaving benefits being slashed. Tell the committee that insurance companies must be held responsible for offering fair and affordable rates, and express support for bringing transparency to the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association.

Conversely, if you feel that the coverage you are receiving for the cost of your policy is fair, share that too. It is absolutely imperative that every effort is made to ensure Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan’s perspective - pushing limited protection coverage or returning to a tort system - is framed as what it is: Insurance companies offering sham policies with no guarantee for rate reduction. That’s a good deal for insurance companies and a bad deal for everyone else.

The committee is seeking constituent feedback, and now is the time. Please encourage your colleagues to do the same.

Unique Technology Used to Treat Pulmonary Embolisms

The FlowTriever allows for the non-surgical removal of blood clots from pulmonary arteries A unique, minimally invasive device to treat patients with potentially deadly pulmonary embolisms is now being offered at Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital. The device, known as the FlowTriever, was approved last year by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It is the first thrombectomy device cleared by the FDA for the treatment of pulmonary embolisms. The pulmonary embolism specific clearance was based upon the strength of the FlowTriever Pulmonary Embolectomy (FLARE) Clinical Study.

The FlowTriever allows for the non-surgical removal of blood clots from the pulmonary arteries without the use of thrombolytic drugs and the risk of bleeding complications. The device uses a specially designed catheter that is fed into the site of the clot, and is designed to pull the clot from the pulmonary artery, allowing blood to flow freely.

It is with sadness we announce Patricia T. Shek passed away on Wednesday, February 27. Pat was involved in the SCMS Auxiliary (now Alliance) for many years, serving as President and chair of many committees throughout the years.

Pat, along with Pat Koenig and others, spearheaded the 100th anniversary celebration of the SCMS in 2002. Please keep the Shek family in your prayers.

Patricia T. Shek passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, at her home in Saginaw. She was born in New York City on June 28, 1927, and raised in the suburbs of Detroit. Patricia attended Wayne State University and discontinued her studies to marry a young Thoracic Surgeon, John L. Shek MD, and they moved to Saginaw in 1956. Dr. Shek died in Saginaw on September 17, 1998.

Patricia is survived by two sons and one daughter, Peter S. Shek and his wife Debra Ann Shek and their children Millicent Elyse, John Walter and Peter Leonard Shek, all of Saginaw; her

daughter, Eugenie V. Shek, of Saginaw; and her son, John R. Shek, of South Pasadena, Florida, and his children by Sandra L. Eddy of Marblehead, Massachusetts, Madeleine Shek, of Missoula, Montana, and Katherine L. (Kaye) Shek, of Eugene, Oregon; and a brother Michael L. Turnbull and Patty (Petzold) Turnbull of Harbor Springs and Juno Beach, Florida.

Patricia was active in her community, served on numerous committees and received many awards. In addition to various other positions, she served as President of the Saginaw County Medical Society Auxiliary from 1969-70.

Funeral services were held on March 5, 2019, at First United Methodist Church, followed by internment at Oakwood Cemetery. The Shek Family is planning a memorial service and a gathering early in May 2019, for those who were unable to attend the funeral service.

Medicine CMU College of Medicine to Expand Residency Program Legislature okay’s plan by four Michigan medical schools to expand primary care residency programs through loan forgiveness Central Michigan University’s College of Medicine (CMU) will expand its residency program - led by CMU Medical Education Partners in Saginaw - through a collaborative initiative approved by the Michigan Legislature that also will award selected physician graduates up to $75,000 in loan forgiveness.

Terms of the initiative require that physician graduates work in underserved areas of the state for at least two years.

CMU is among four Michigan-based medical schools that collaborated on what’s dubbed the MIDOCS plan. It was developed to increase the number of medical residencies in the state - especially in the primary care specialties of family medicine, psychiatry, pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology in underserved areas. MIDOCS allows CMU to expand its psychiatry residency program by two positions in 2019.

The $5 million state appropriation for fiscal year 2019 will fund programs at the four participating medical schools that incorporate innovative teaching models such as integrated care, which coordinates general and behavioral health care.

“We applaud the Michigan Legislature and our colleagues at Michigan State University, Wayne State University and Western Michigan University for having the foresight and the will to work together to create this program,” said George Kikano MD, CMU Vice President for Health Affairs and Dean of the CMU College of Medicine.

only 63 percent of the need, according to a study by the state Department of Public Health.

Debt often drives new doctors’ decisions on where to practice and in which specialty. The AAMC reports that the average medical student’s debt has reached nearly $190,000.

Because of that debt, many doctors choose higher-paying specialties rather than practicing primary care in underserved areas.

One of the students who will benefit from MIDOCS is soonto-be CMU College of Medicine graduate Jisselly McGregor of Saginaw. On Match Day, she found out she was accepted into her top choice of CMU’s residency program in Saginaw.

“I am thrilled to have matched into CMU’s residency program and to receive financial support as a result of the new MIDOCS program,” she said. “I selected psychiatry because of my passion to provide mental health treatment - particularly for migrant workers and underserved people in the region. My husband is a police officer in Saginaw, and we plan to stay in the area.”

Enticement to Stay in the Community CMU Medical Education Partners’ two associate institutions, Covenant HealthCare and Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital, serve as teaching hospitals and are the primary referral hospitals for patients throughout middle and northeastern Michigan.

Training also will occur at local federally qualified health centers, including Great Lakes Bay Health Centers.

“MIDOCS will allow us to not only better serve our local communities by adding residencies, but it increases the incentive for our CMU-trained physicians to make a home here and continue to serve for many years,” said Mary Jo Wagner MD, CMU’s Director of Graduate Medical Education.

The SCMS Foundation will host its 10th Annual Golf Outing on Saturday, June 8, 2019, at the Saginaw Country Club.

The SCMS Foundation makes low interest loans to medical students with ties to the Saginaw area in the hopes of encouraging the students to return to Saginaw to practice. Interest and principal can be forgiven if they return to Saginaw to practice as SCMS members.

Saginaw County Community Mental Health Authority (SCCMHA) Expands Mental Health First Aid Training in Saginaw County with the Assistance of a Grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation SCCMHA is expanding the availability of training in the national Mental Health First Aid program in the Saginaw community assisted by a grant from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation. Mental Health First Aid training is a course supported and endorsed by the National Council for Behavioral Health and U.S. Congress, and is featured by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in their Registry of Evidence Based Programs and Practices.

To date, more than 1.4 million persons in the U.S. have become Mental Health First Aid certified. Mental Health First Aid is an eight-hour training certification course for adults from all walks of life. The course teaches how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders. Training participants receive instruction on a fivestep action plan to assess a situation, select and implement interventions and secure appropriate care for the individual.

The certification program introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems and addiction problems, builds understanding of their impact and overviews common treatments.

Through research evaluations in randomized controlled trials and a quantitative study, the CPR-like program has been proven to be effective in improving trainees’ knowledge of mental disorders, reducing stigma and increasing the amount of help provided to others with mental illness and substance use disorders that they know or may experience in the community.

In its pilot year, the program was introduced nationally in nearly 20 states and more than 40 communities nationwide.

Mental Health First Aid originated in 2001 in Australia under the direction of founders Betty Kitchener and Tony Jorm. To date, it has been replicated in 20 other countries worldwide, including the U.S., Hong Kong, Scotland, England, Canada, Finland and Singapore.

“We welcome SCCMHA’s involvement and enthusiasm in the Mental Health First Aid community,” says Linda Rosenberg, MSW, president and CEO of the National Council for Behavioral Health, the organization who brought Mental Health First Aid to the United States in 2008. “We know they will have a great impact on the mental health communities throughout the Saginaw area, and will be key players in improving mental health literacy nationwide.”

The National Council certified SCCMHA to provide the Mental Health First Aid program in October 2014 through an instructor certification course in Omaha, Nebraska. Since that time, SCCMHA has trained 1,700 persons in Mental Health First Aid. SCCMHA, and all the sites across the nation that replicate this program, maintain strict fidelity to the original, proven program. SCCMHA will utilize the grant funding from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation to purchase additional training materials and to prepare and certify four additional trainers, one of which will be a member of local law enforcement. The goal is to train an additional 1,000 Saginaw community members, to improve mental health literacy – helping them identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and addiction.
