What is “The Gift?”

A

h, the dawg days of summer.

How great it is to be able to take a vacation, a brief respite, from the challenges of daily life. I was able to share my mother’s 95th birthday with her at her home on the ocean shore of Washington. It was such a gift walking on the beach, my feet in the water, a cool breeze in my hair, with the company of friends and family.

There was plenty of time to reminisce my youth and my future. For the first time, I had the experience of bathing my mother. If thinking about role reversal was not enough, I was hit by the juxtaposition of mother, daughter, physician and the profound

power of touch. As I washed her hair with soap, I thought of all the care she had given me in my life. She would often tell me that I am “in my perfect place” when things were difficult. She would also ask, “What is the Gift?” when a situation was hard. She loved the feel of the loofah on her back as I enjoyed having my back scrubbed. I realized how I continue to receive care from her despite her dependence on her family.

Back in Saginaw, the pace is increased, there are places to go, meetings to be made and people to see. Patients are waiting to be seen.

Time limits need to be adhered to.

Do not ask questions that you do not have time to listen to the answers.

The EMR is down for updates. New templates need to be made. New coding practices need to be learned.

Medicolegal issues need to be addressed. CME needs to be met and licensure needs to be completed.

Insurance does not cover much for our patients or pay much for our offices. If you do not document, it did not occur.

It seems that the give and take, the art of medicine, is being crowded out by the business of medicine.

What is “The Gift?”

The power of touch continues to be profound and there is still care to be given and received.

National Physician Suicide Awareness Day Shine a Light. Speak its name.

Monday, September 17, 2018 In order to address the issue of physician suicide, the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors (CORD), in collaboration with AAEM, ACEP, ACOEP, EMRA, RSA, RSO and SAEM have come together to annually dedicate the third Monday in September as National Physician Suicide Awareness Day. Vision Zero Physician suicide is a tremendous issue in healthcare today.

While estimates of the actual number of physician suicides vary, literature has shown that the relative risk for suicide being 2.27 times greater among women and 1.41 times higher 4

among men versus the general population.

Each physician suicide is a devastating loss affecting everyone - family, friends, colleagues and up to one million patients per year. It is both a very personal loss and a public health crisis. Vision Zero calls on individuals, residency programs, health care organizations and national groups to make a commitment to break down stigma, open the conversation, decrease the fear of consequences, reach out to colleagues, recognize warning signs and learn to approach our colleagues who may be at risk. Let us challenge each other as individual, community, institutional and organizational to make changes to reach zero physician suicides.

Suicide can be prevented. Be the one to be there. Shed light on this issue and change the culture of medicine to save lives.

Henry owns a security consulting business, and has been providing his services to several local prominent businesses. He is a certified Crime Prevention Specialist, and has participated in multiple advanced crime prevention training programs around the country.

“TED Talks* - The Human Challenge of Healthcare” Speakers: To be determined (see below) *So what is a TED Talk? A TED Talk is about ideas. It is about real people making connections with other real people. These talks are concise, every word counts, lasting from 5-18 minutes.

Generally these talks are delivered without notes, from memory, conveying passion and possibilities.

A speaker need not be an educated professional. They can be illiterate. Their experience is what matters. The audience plays a role in that they need to encourage if they feel the speaker is nervous. As a speaker, be real and kind. This is an opportunity to promote great ideas by working together to open each other’s eyes.

The theme of the evening will be The Human Challenge of Healthcare. So bring excitement, energy and focus on your idea and its application to the lives of others.

A Worthwhile Effort

H

ere are some interesting facts from the Kaiser (as in Kaiser/Permanente) Family Foundation: • For one in three retirees, Social Security accounts for 90 percent of their monthly income.

• The average Medicare beneficiary spends 41 percent of their Social Security check on health care.

• People over 85 (one of the fastest growing segments of the population) spend 74 percent of their Social Security check on health care.

Now, let’s do a quick calculation: Say you’re one of those unfortunate over-85year-olds-who-get-90%-of-their-incomefrom-Social-Security. Your monthly check is $1,400 (the average SS check).

You spend 74 percent ($1,036) of that on health care, leaving $364, add the 10 percent additional income that you have, which gives you total spending money for the month of $504. That’s $504 to pay for everything you need other than healthcare. Food, rent, insurance, clothing, fixing the plumbing, electricity, water, and the myriad other things that you need. As you can see, you are in big trouble financially. You probably live in substandard housing; you may be eating dog food; you may be unable to bathe or

wash your clothes because you cannot afford soap or even hot water because your water heater is broken and there is no money to get it fixed; having a car or a cell phone or cable TV is a wishful dream for you.

Ironically, one reason you are so poor is that you spend most of your money on health care. Now, suppose you could save one-third of your health care costs. Not too far-fetched an idea. The American Society of Internal Medicine Foundation, and others, have estimated that as much as one-third of all the money spent on health care in this country is wasted.

This is no surprise to anyone. Round up the usual suspects: Duplicate tests, needlessly expensive brand-name meds, unnecessary ER visits, and unrealistic patient demands.

If you could save one-third of the money you spend on health care, you would be not nearly so bad off. Indeed, you would have an additional $345 per month, a 69 percent raise! You just won the lottery! Eight hundred and fifty dollars a month to spend, not nearly so frighteningly low a figure. You could get a decent one-bedroom apartment in our area for $400, and if you were frugal, could manage reasonably well on $450 for the rest of the month.

Dear colleagues, the fact that so many older folks (and make no mistake about it…these are the patients we see every day) are in such financial straits is largely due of the burden of that unnecessary “$345” for their health care. Of course, one could argue that somehow it is the duty of the government to fix our “broken” healthcare system, and that would get our patients out of their fix.

But one could also argue that almost every one of those 345 unnecessary dollars they are spending have a doctor’s signature on an order form somewhere that has generated charges to our patient. Harm done to our patients, harm that has pushed some of them into poverty and some into bankruptcy… and there are physicians’ fingerprints on the documentation. Do we need to be reminded what Hippocrates famously told us: “First Do No Harm?”

None of this is to say that major reform is not needed in the way health care is financed in our country. None of this is to say that doctors are not being treated unfairly every day of the year.

None of this is to say that patients are not being treated unfairly as well. This discussion is solely about the costs… and burdens of unnecessary care. And, of course, what can be done about it. continued on page 7

Enter, in 2012, Howard Brody MD of MSU (Go Green!) and the American Society of Internal Medicine Foundation which then started the “Choosing Wisely® ” Movement, a HUGE national and international effort by virtually every one of the specialty and sub-specialty organizations to eliminate unnecessary (and decrease overdone) tests, procedures and treatments.

Since then, this movement has generated countless pamphlets, brochures, classes at conferences, TV programs, special reports, news reports, partnerships with consumer’s groups, advertisements in physicians’ magazines (including this one), and a very excellent website: ChoosingWisely.org.

Beautiful. Get everyone on the same page. Teach doctors not to order unnecessary meds, tests and procedures and teach patients not to ask for them. Problem of unnecessary costs solved. Right? Well, not exactly. You see, I’ve actually been teaching a class on Choosing Wisely® at the OLLI program for seniors at Saginaw Valley State University for the last three

years, and I’ve gotten my students pretty up-to-date on these recommendations, but I’ve been hearing disturbing comments about their experiences with the medical profession and Choosing Wisely®.

The first is that their personal doctor will tell them that he/ she has not actually heard of Choosing Wisely® at all. I find it unbelievable that a doctor could be so out of touch, especially with an initiative of their own specialty society. But, there you are. The second problem is that my students feel they are forced to undergo tests they know are unnecessary. They are told these tests, for instance, pre-operative tests, are “routine” and “everybody gets them” and “you can’t have the surgery without them.” Again, hard to believe this is happening, but there you are. Next month, we will delve more deeply into the Choosing Wisely® website, with some ideas on how we can all contribute to this worthwhile effort. Maybe we can get our poor patient out of that substandard housing yet!

DESCRIPTION Uncovering suicidal ideation, planning and intent in a primary care setting (or specialist’s setting) is a daunting task for many reasons, not the least of which are the difficult time pressures encountered in such settings. A recent study showed that nearly 50 percent of patients who died by suicide have seen a medical health care provider within a month of their suicide, with 22 percent having seen a medical provider within one week of their suicide.

In this half-day training, Dr. Shea, one of the most popular speakers in mental health today, will provide a compelling two-part presentation (with video demonstrations) on interviewing techniques for uncovering the types of hidden secrets - such as incest, domestic violence, marital stress, financial stress, antisocial behaviors and substance abuse - that set the stage for suicide and are common topics for exploration in a primary care setting. Dr. Shea will then demonstrate the acclaimed interviewing strategy for rapidly uncovering suicidal ideation and planning known as the Chronological Assessment of Suicide Events (CASE Approach) that has shown itself to be extremely useful in primary care settings.

OBJECTIVES • Be able to understand and describe the difficulties of uncovering suicidal ideation, planning and intent in a primary care setting.

• Be able to utilize the following validity techniques (normalization, shame attenuation, the behavioral incident, gentle assumption, denial of the specific, the catch-all question and symptom amplification) that are useful for uncovering sensitive and taboo topics that trigger suicide.

• Be able to describe and use the above validity techniques as flexibly utilized in the innovative interview strategy for eliciting suicidal ideation, the CASE Approach, as adapted to the hectic time constraints of a primary care setting.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER Dr. Shea is an internationally acclaimed workshop leader and innovator in the fields of suicide prevention, clinical interviewing and improving medication adherence having given over 850 presentations worldwide. Dr. Shea is well respected in the fields of primary care and general medicine and nursing for his Doody’s Award-winning book on medical interviewing, The Medication Interest Model: How to Talk with Patients About Their Medications, whose second edition was published in July 2018. Dr. Shea’s book, The Practical Art of Suicide Assessment, is viewed as a classic in the field of suicidology.

His text, Psychiatric Interviewing: The Art of Understanding, 3rd Edition, was chosen by the British Medical Association as the 2017 Book of the Year in Psychiatry. The annual ceremony that marks the beginning of a student's journey into practicing medicine comes at an important time for CMU, said Dean George Kikano MD in his remarks to the new students gathered at Plachta Auditorium in Warriner Hall.

He said it is a time when CMU’s undergraduate and graduate medical education programs are continuing to innovate and grow; when the college recently received full accreditation from the Liaison Committee for Medical Education; and when 100 percent of its graduates have placed in residencies - 10 students in CMU's residency program in Saginaw, 54 percent in Michigan and 75 percent in primary care.

"Now, more than ever, we are delivering on our mission to train, to treat and to lead in fulfilling our mission and improve the future of health care in Michigan," he said.

The College of Medicine selected this year's class from a record 7,286 applicants from Michigan and 11 other states.

That continues the yearly record-breaking numbers of applicants that began with the first class of 64 in 2013. Last year's applicants totaled 5,443.

Students in CMU's College of Medicine spend their first two years of study on CMU's main campus in Mount Pleasant.

Third- and fourth-year medical students complete six-month Comprehensive Community Clerkships at multiple sites throughout the state and required hospital clerkships at

Obstetrics and Gynecology Brian F. Tesler MD and Frederick Eruo MD join a group of five Obstetricians and Gynecologists and one certified nurse midwife in the OB/GYN Department. The two physicians provide patients with prenatal and postnatal care, annual exams, ultrasounds, birth control consultations and more.

Dr. Tesler, who earned his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, is certified in CenteringPregnancy, a service offered by CMU Health in cooperation with the Michigan Health Improvement Alliance. He completed his residency at Hurley Medical Center in Flint.

Dr. Eruo earned his medical degree from the University of Nigeria in Enugu, Nigeria. He completed residencies in OB/ GYN at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, and in Surgery at the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven, Connecticut, a program affiliated with Yale University. He also obtained specialized training in Maternal-Fetal Medicine through a fellowship with the University of Cincinnati.

Internal Medicine and Endocrinology Internal Medicine and Endocrinology specialist, Vivek Variar MD, will see patients at the clinic and provide inpatient services for Covenant HealthCare and St. Mary's of Michigan in Saginaw. Dr. Variar is trained to prevent and treat existing conditions and chronic illness in adults, including diabetes, heart disease, cancer and HIV. AHA Recognizes Covenant; Get With the Guidelines®Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award Covenant HealthCare has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

Covenant HealthCare earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-todate, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients.

Before discharge, patients should also receive education on managing their health, get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as, other care transition interventions.

Melissa Duchene, RN, Stroke Program Administrator says, “We work with a great team; each of us cares about our patients and doing the right thing for the people in our community through evidenced-based clinical guidelines.”

Covenant HealthCare additionally received the association’s Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll award. To qualify for this recognition, hospitals must meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke.

“We are pleased to recognize Covenant HealthCare for their commitment to stroke care,” said Eric E. Smith, MD, national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines® Steering Committee and an associate professor of neurology at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. “Research has shown that hospitals adhering to clinical measures through the Get with the Guidelines® quality improvement initiative can often see fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates.”

According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, and nearly 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.

Covenant is a Primary Stroke Center meeting the rigorous standards of, and is accredited by, the Health Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP) as a Primary Stroke Care Program. To be a HFAP certified Primary Stroke Center, Covenant demonstrates improved treatment, better patient outcomes and reduced costs. Moreover, Primary Stroke centers have the required infrastructure and protocols in place to stabilize and provide rapid and evidence-based care to acute stroke patients.

Moderate Care Beds Available at Covenant Recognizing that some patients may experience a need for close observation or intervention, yet not require an ICU admission, 24 Moderate Care beds will now be available for designation at Covenant. As of August 5, 2018, the availability of Moderate Care beds on each main campus (Cooper and Harrison) will support this patient population’s care needs.

Twelve beds will be housed on Harrison 6Main and 12 beds will be housed on Cooper 6N. As beds become available and patients are recognized as appropriate for this setting, new admissions and patients with a change in status will filter into the available moderate care beds.

Moderate Care beds are meant to be a short-term accommodation used to manage patients at risk of being admitted to the ICU or newly out of the ICU. Patients assigned a Moderate Care accommodation must meet criteria for that type of admission, including being hemodynamically stable and requiring care at the frequency defined by Covenant clinical practice policies.

The goal of these beds is to allow for the most appropriate patient placement based on care needs and staffing models.

Admissions or transfers in question will be discussed collaboratively between the ICU physicians and the nursing leadership.

Covenant Partners with Wound Care Advantage, Expands Outpatient Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Program Covenant HealthCare recently announced its partnership with Wound Care Advantage to provide full-service management and consulting as it expands its outpatient wound care and hyperbaric medicine program. The Covenant Wound Healing Center services patients from 20 counties across central and northeast Michigan, and there’s a growing need for specialized wound care in the region due to increased diabetes rates.

According to the American Diabetes Association, more than one million people in Michigan, or 12.4 percent of the adult population, have diabetes, and 2.7 million more have prediabetes. High levels of blood glucose can impact nerve tissue and cause poor blood flow, making it difficult for wounds to heal - particularly on the lower extremities.

Dr. Reitz is trained in all aspects of the foot and ankle, and has a special interest in fracture care, ankle arthroscopic surgery, wound care and complex rearfoot reconstructive procedures. She received her podiatry degree from the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine, and completed a three-year intensive podiatric surgical residency training in trauma and reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle at Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc.

Dr. Srivastava completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the Central Michigan University College of Medicine, along with bone marrow transplant training at Ohio State

MSMS/SCMS Represent All Physicians in All Specialities Whether Solo, Group or Employed HOSPITAL EMPLOYED PHYSICIANS – WHY JOIN MSMS AND THE SCMS?

Guidelines – Applications for Hospital Medical Staff Privileges MSMS endorses the Guidelines on Applications for Hospital Medical Staff Privileges. (Prior to 1990)

We are often asked by hospital-employed physicians what benefit there is to joining MSMS/SCMS. If you read MSMS policies below, this should answer it. If physicians need help in their hospital on any of these, MSMS/SCMS can try to involve itself as best it can. Ultimately, MSMS/SCMS best represents ALL physicians… including hospital-employed physicians.

Guidelines for Medical Staff Funds 1. Participation in such funds shall be voluntary.

2. Control of the use of medical staff funds shall be limited to the physicians who have contributed to the fund.

3. The constitution, bylaws or other governing rules of the fund shall provide that all elections and votes on major decisions by the membership shall be by secret written ballot. (Prior to 1990)

Hospital Boards

Amending Medical Staff Bylaws MSMS will assist medical staffs by providing legal help and support, if determined appropriate by the MSMS Board of Directors, when a hospital board of directors unilaterally changes the medical staff bylaws. (Res27-94A)

Guidelines for Physician-Hospital Relations

Physician Representation on Hospital Boards of Trustees MSMS supports the principle that all physicians seated on hospital boards of trustees be elected to their position by the hospital medical staff members. (Res51-06A)

Physician Representation on Hospital Governing Boards MSMS encourages all physicians to participate on their hospital governing boards and/or boards of trustees, and recommends in addition that elected chiefs of staff be voting members of their hospital governing boards.

Arbitrary Denial or Termination of Medical Staff Privileges MSMS recognizes hospital medical staff bylaws as a contract that affords due process to all members of the medical staff. (Res14-95A)

Consolidation of Medical Staff and Departments MSMS supports the concept that consolidation of medical staff and departments and associated bylaws and departmental policies and procedures must require the approval of all medical staffs and/or departments so involved. 1. Hospital-employed physicians should be included as members of the medical staff and should be subject to its bylaws, rules and regulations.

The following provisions should be included in medical staff bylaws: “The credentials committee (or other appropriate committee) shall cooperate with the governing board in reviewing the credentials of all physician applicants for employment by the hospital to assure that such employees qualify for regular membership on the medical staff. The procedures followed in processing applications for regular medical staff appointment and for continued staff privileges shall be applicable to and have control over such employed physicians.”

2. The medical staff should include proper safeguards in all appropriate sections of the medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations to make certain that they apply to all physicians serving on the medical staff, including those employed by the hospital.

3. While medical staff bylaws must be approved by the governing board and, for this reason, are considered to be binding on the governing board, it would appear desirable to include a provision in any contracts with physicians, as well as, in the medical staff bylaws, to assure the desired result. The following is suggested:

“In accordance with and subject to the procedures of the organized medical staff, Doctor _______ is granted and accepts appointment as a member of the medical staff. This Agreement shall terminate automatically if the staff privileges of Doctor ______ are revoked upon recommendation of the organized medical staff.”

4. If there is no organized democratic departmental structure which allows for communication and input, the medical staff should establish an advisory committee to counsel and assist the administrator in carrying out his or her responsibilities.

5. Where the employment of a full-time physician to carry out departmental administrative and operational functions is being considered, it is recommended that consideration be given to employing this physician as an administrative assistant to the elected chief with the delegated functions appropriately spelled out in the medical staff or departmental bylaws.

6. Medical staffs in all types of non-federal hospitals should be alert to the potential dangers of governing board dominance over the executive committee and the need for careful bylaw structuring of the executive committee to prevent this.

7. The American Medical Association (AMA) should firmly oppose the specific proposals of the American College of Hospital Administrators and the Catholic Hospital Association concerning medical staff structure and medical staff-administrator-board relationships. (Note: The Board has concerned itself only with those specific sections of the documents.)

8. It is emphasized that medical staffs should take a firm stand against governing board control of medical staff activities related to patient care.

9. State and local medical societies are urged to supplement AMA’s effort to assist and offer support to hospital medical staffs involved in negotiations with governing boards and administrations. (Prior to 1990)

Hospital Admissions by Allied Health Professionals Only physicians and surgeons with staff privileges may admit patients. Allied health professional services may be available, within limits of skill and law, only under direction and supervision of a member of the medical staff qualified in that field. Such services are to be under direction of the department or section responsible for that type of service. (Prior to 1990) - Edited 1998

Hospital Medical Staff Credentialing of Physicians who Provide Electronic and Other Telemedicine Services for Hospital Patients MSMS supports the requirement of physicians who provide diagnostic or therapeutic services on a regular, ongoing or contractual basis via electronic or other communications to patients in a hospital setting

within Michigan to be fully credentialed by that hospital’s medical staff in accordance with the medical staff bylaws.

MSMS supports the requirement of physicians who provide diagnostic or therapeutic services on a regular, ongoing or contractual basis to patients in a hospital setting within Michigan solely via electronic or other distant communications (and so would not otherwise ever have any direct personal interaction with the remainder of the medical staff ) be credentialed as active members of that hospital’s medical staff, and be held to the same standards of requisite responsibilities as other active members of the medical staff. (Board Action Report #3, 1997 HOD, re Res29-96A, Res97-96A, & Res98-96A)

Medical Doctors and Department Heads of Hospital Staffs It is inappropriate for hospital medical departments in acute care general hospitals to be chaired by persons other than licensed physicians or, when appropriate, dentists. (Prior to 1990) – Edited 1998

Medical Staff Reappointment Reappointment of doctors to the active medical staff should not be denied except for medical ineptitude, character deficiency or conviction of unethical conduct, revocation of license by the state or violation of the hospital medical staff bylaws that have been approved by the medical staff. Cramer, SCMS Executive Director The Saginaw County Medical Society (SCMS) is the professional association of physicians in Saginaw County, and a component of the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS). In order to be a member of one, you must be a member of both.

I have been asked many times by both members and nonmembers “Why should I belong to the SCMS and MSMS?” “What do you do for me?” Some have responded they “don’t use their membership because they don’t attend SCMS meetings.” SCMS and MSMS membership is so much more than membership meetings. We are not only support for you, but for your office staff as well. I’m hoping the information below will help members who are on the fence about paying their dues decide to remain members, and also convince non-members why they should belong. We represent physicians in all specialties and in all types of practices – solo, group, employed, etc. Active membership is open to MDs and DOs. • Active physician dues are $795 per year ($495/MSMS and $300/SCMS). One hundred percent of SCMS dues and 87 percent of MSMS dues are tax deductible as a business expense.

• The SCMS offers a 50 percent discount for first year physicians.

• MSMS offers a 75 percent discount for first year physicians, 50 percent discount for second year physicians and 25 percent discount for third year physicians, and also discounts the second membership 50 percent when physician spouses are both members.

• Resident and medical student memberships are also available.

SCMS Efforts on Suicide Awareness Training Directly Result in New AMA Policy To combat the growing suicide epidemic in this country, and as a direct result of SCMS efforts starting at the MSMS House of Delegates in April 2018, the AMA adopted a new policy to increase awareness and physician training on suicide at their Annual Meeting in Chicago in June 2018.

Who sets MSMS policy? You Do! The Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) House of Delegates (HOD), comprised of 319 elected delegates, is the official legislative and policy-making body of MSMS and its component societies, including the Saginaw County Medical Society (SCMS).

Resolutions debated during the annual MSMS HOD are the vehicles by which MSMS policies, priorities and directives are determined. Deadline for resolutions is March 1 at 5 p.m.

Resolutions must be submitted via the online submission form.

The best way to get your idea or recommendation adopted as MSMS policy or directive is at the grassroots level. As a member in good standing of MSMS/SCMS, you have the right to bring your ideas to the annual HOD for consideration by MSMS’ "legislators."

To do so, present your suggestion and rationale at the SCMS meeting. If the SCMS agrees, the SCMS will work with you to draft a resolution to be presented at the next HOD meeting. The resolution should specify the desired MSMS policy or directive for MSMS action. If the SCMS does not agree with your idea, you may ask another delegate to submit a resolution on your behalf as an individual delegate.

It is also prudent to check MSMS’ current Policy Manual and, if relevant, the AMA Policy Finder to determine if policy on the issue already exists.

CMU Health Extends Primary Care Services in Saginaw Township

Christopher Archangeli MD, a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, joined a group of five specialists and one nurse practitioner at CMU Health in August. Dr. Archangeli, who earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, was certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 2017.

He completed his Psychiatry residency at the University of California in Los Angeles. He furthered his education and specialized training by completing a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. In addition to patient care, he will also train students and residents as an assistant professor of Psychiatry in the CMU College of Medicine.

Surgery Omar Marar MD, a Colorectal Surgeon, joined a group of ten specialists, three nurse practitioners and one physician assistant at CMU Health’s Department of Surgery in August. Dr. Marar, who earned his medical degree from Royal College of Surgeons Ireland in Dublin, Ireland is board-eligible in General Surgery. He completed a General Surgery Residency at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. Dr. Marar furthered his education and specialized training by completing a Colorectal fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia in New Jersey. Dr. Marar’s areas of expertise and special interests include treatment of diseases of the colon and rectum, colon cancer, hemorrhoid surgery, Crohn’s disease

CMU Health is pleased to announce its partnership with Lawrence L. LaLonde MD, a well-respected Family Medicine physician in Saginaw. What Saginaw Township-area residents have known as the Lawrence LaLonde MD Family Practice since 1989 was renamed CMU Health Primary Care on September 4, 2018. CMU Health Primary Care is located at 5421 North Colony Drive in Saginaw Township.

This partnership means the practice will be able to extend its access to comprehensive care to current patients. Although the practice will be renamed, Dr. LaLonde aims to make the transition seamless for his current patients, while CMU Health aims to maintain the high standard of care that Dr. LaLonde has been providing for years.

Dr. LaLonde will continue seeing patients part-time over the next year at the office alongside several existing staff members. The clinic will be staffed with two providers five days a week, so patient access to the same great care will grow.

Distracting Devices in Healthcare: Malpractice Implications Digital distraction in healthcare is emerging as a great threat to patient safety and physician well-being. This phenomenon involves the habitual use of personal electronic devices by healthcare providers for nonclinical purposes during appointments and procedures. Some call it “distracted doctoring.”

But the threat might more aptly be called “distracted practice,” as it impacts all healthcare workers and staff. shared with federal regulators an exhaustive AMA analysis indicating the proposed merger would likely substantially diminish competition in many health care markets to the detriment of patients.

“The CVS-Aetna deal is popularly described as a vertical merger involving two companies that don’t operate in the same markets,” said AMA President Barbara L McAneny, MD. “But in fact, CVS and Aetna do operate as rivals in some of the same markets, raising substantial concerns that are specific to horizontal mergers. A merger of these two rivals would risk a substantial reduction of competition in the standalone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan market and the pharmacy benefit management (PBM) services market.”

The 29-page analysis compiled by the AMA noted that the merger is expected to increase premiums due to an increase in market concentration in 30 of 34 Medicare Part D regional markets. In 10 of 34 Medicare Part D regional markets, the deal would exceed a threshold set by federal antitrust guidelines for a merger that should be presumed likely to enhance market power.

Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive. safeTALK-trained helpers can recognize these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources.

Learning goals and objectives Over the course of their training, safeTALK participants will learn to:  Notice and respond to situations where suicide thoughts might be present  Recognize that invitations for help are often overlooked  Move beyond the common tendency to miss, dismiss and avoid suicide  Apply the TALK steps: Tell, Ask, Listen, and KeepSafe  Know community resources and how to connect someone with thoughts of suicide to them for further help Up to 45% of individuals who die by suicide have visited their primary care physician within a month of their death; additional research suggests that up to 67% of those who attempt suicide receive medical attention as a result of their attempt. Given these statistics, primary care has enormous potential to prevent suicides and connect people to needed specialty care - especially when they collaborate or formally partner with behavioral healthcare providers.
