Accessibility Be sure to take accessibility guidelines into consideration when using these brand standards.

Contrast and color use are vital to accessibility for users, including users with visual disabilities.

Make sure the contrast between the text and background is greater than or equal to 4.5:1 for small text and 3:1 for large text. Test your color palette for accessible combinations with a contrast checker.

(Exceptions: You don’t need to meet color contrast requirements for logos or purely decorative graphic elements.)

Don’t use color alone to convey meaning. Use icons, written content, and other visual elements to reinforce clear communication of the content.

1.1 Brand Guide

Logo The SCL Health logo refers to the joining of two primary elements in the graphic identity system: the heart/cross symbol and the logotype. The logotype consists of the word identifiers set in the official Gibson typeface and style. The symbol and words have a unique proportion and format that should not be altered in any way. When the logo is reduced or enlarged, it should always be treated as one unit. All elements should be sized proportionately. a: Terminology Use the terms to the right to establish a common understanding of the logo elements. b: Clearspace In an effort to make the SCL Health logo clearly visible in all applications, surround it with sufficient clearspace — free of type, graphics and other elements that might cause visual clutter. This helps ensure the integrity and legibility of the logo.

Vertical Logo The vertical orientation of the logo should be used in a very limited capacity, and only when necessary. The vertical orientation is only to be applied to care sites and will not be allowed for the SCL Health system logo. The same guidelines used for the master horizontal logo also apply to the vertical orientation.

Logo Tagline Lockups It is important to treat the tagline lockup uniformly across all communications. This association helps reinforce “Our mission is you.” as the SCL Health tagline. The right shows the approved tagline lockup.

The Heart-Cross The SCL Health Heart-Cross symbol is the visual signature of the system. This symbol is legally copyrighted for use by SCL Health and our care sites.

a: Meaning A longstanding symbol of healthcare, the cross, has been crafted in a way truly unique to SCL Health. Our cross features a heart in the negative space. It’s a focal point. A metaphor. Centered. It reinforces our tagline and our brand promise—an organization for people like you. But we only see the heart through the coming together of each corner—a patchwork of regions, communities, and employees. b: Evolution An updated heart-cross was introduced in 2021 to build a more contemporary brand image. Two additional secondary colors were added, PMS Process Blue and PMS 368. The color modifications give new meaning to the mark by helping shift perception from ‘corporate entity’ to a more approachable ‘community establishment.’

Select Service Line Logos We have identified a handful of priority service line logos reflected here. The reasons for this may be due to the fact that they have brand equity over years of use, that they maintain separate buildings and sites, or that they operate across a different region than the main site.

Also they meet the below criteria: • Represents significant percentage of site volume and/or revenue; and/or • Maintains multiple locations throughout your service area; and/or • Has a “halo” effect upon the site brand; and/or • Sustained performance with better than average scores for patient experience, quality and safety; and • Approved by senior leadership team.

Department names should never be expressed in the brand identity architecture. The department or program’s name should be separate from the logo and listed below Volunteers or similarly near the care site logo as a separate element.

Programs & Events Individual logos will not be developed for departments, associate initiatives, specific programs, contests or events. This includes internal communications and sometimes patientfacing materials. Often a text treatment of the program name and use of the primary site logo, as part of the sign-off, will work most effectively; and may save time and money. It will also help connect goodwill from the program back to the primary site, which will best benefit the site.

Alignment & Spacing Volunteers The department name should be left-aligned with the first letter of the care site. If the department name is long, weVolunteers recommend centering it under the logo. The baseline of the department name should be a distance equal to 50% of the symbol size below the baseline of the care site name.

Volunteers Volunteers Type Requirements Department names should be set in Gibson Regular, upper/lower case with initial caps, and tracked out 10-40 before kerning. Text color should align with the logo use-case: white logo, white text; black and color logos, black text.

The length of the department name will vary, but the point size of the department name should be the same height as the height of the caresite name.

Joint Ventures Several hospital sites have joint ventures (or joint operating agreements or similar formal business agreements) with other organizations within the community. In many cases, the core business agreement dictates a need for a joint identity. In these situations, a joint lock-up approach to connecting the identities is best used as shown at right.

If the joint venture does not specify how the organization is to be identified and the desire exists to connect it as a sub-identity for the main site brand architecture, utilizing the service line direction may also be an acceptable solution.

Typography The official typeface of the SCL Health logo and brand is Gibson. This is our primary font and should be used on all branded and marketing materials including advertising, website, associate and patient collateral, promotional items, signage, etc. The humanist sans serif was chosen for the modern appeal and versatility.

Obtaining Fonts Gibson is already accessible and in use system-wide.

Licensing options include: Cloud sync within Adobe Fonts Purchase through the foundry, Canada Type.

Font Alternatives An alternative typeface for SCL Health is Arial. This sans serif font was chosen for its contemporary look and its wide availability included in all standard font packages. While communicating our brand throughout the health system and outside our organization, using one font for business papers and communications allows SCL Health to present itself professionally and consistently.

Usage Use this font for agendas, email messages, letters, memos, presentations, reports, training documents and other day-to-day communications.

Due to more limited font accessibility, Museo Sans is the preferred font for Web use.

Tagline Usage Appropriate use of the tagline is important to brand consistency. The right column highlights approved usage regarding line breaks punctuation and capitalization.

Variations To maintain the strength and integrity of the tagline’s core message, please use the tagline in full and without substituting words within the line. In some instances, it might be necessary to use the tagline in conjunction with another thought. Please use these instances sparingly, consistently and with approval.

People and places are essential to our brand. In addition to clinical imagery, lifestyle photography highlighting moments in the community and showing the beauty of the landscape brings authenticity to the forefront and illustrates SCL Health’s focus on health beyond the walls of our hospitals.

Our photography features a wide range of individuals that represents the collective demographics of our regions and nation.

Stock We strive to capture original photography whenever possible; however, there will often be a need to leverage stock photography to fill the gaps. In these cases we have two key goals: 1) Photos should feel real and authentic.

Moments in time, not staged. 2) Look for pops of color.

Community and Regional Seals Seals were developed as a device to further dimensionalize the brand and boost regional authenticity. They represent the multiple locations of the SCL Health system alongside the tagline. There are two types of seals:

Community Seals

Community Seals Community seals are specific to each care site and the city/region in which they are located. They also lock up the tagline and SCL Health.

Regional Seals These seals focus on the larger regions of Front Range, Montana, and Western Colorado.

Seal Usage In consumer-facing material, these seals should only be used as supporting elements. In collateral that is not consumer facing (internal communications, corporate communications, philanthropy, etc.), the seal may act as one of the main elements. In either case, the logo must always remain the primary brand identification on the page.

They can appear in the full range of colors from the brand palette. When choosing a color, consider following the tonality of the photo or colors used in the typography.

Elevated Heart-Cross Usage The heart-cross mark may be used as a graphic element, reversed out (white) in the bottom right-hand corner of a photograph or a blue-gradient background. The page margin determines the size of the mark.

The heart-cross should be accompanied by a lock-up of a care site, SCL Health, and/or the tagline. Align to the top of the horizontal arm of the cross when this information stacks two lines tall. When three lines tall, align to the top of the logo.

Sites may prefer to use this application when they want their site name above SCL Health.

Social Media – Channels The SCL Health brand should be consistent in all digital channels. The opportunities to communicate in each digital channel may be different, but the simplicity of the heart and cross as the system element alone emphasizes the relation of each care site to SCL Health.

Whether internal or external, the tone established and the key messages presented should be respected, maintained and woven throughout all communications.

Whenever possible, use of the full logo is preferred. We recognize that many social media platforms do not easily allow us to use the full logo. Therefore, use of the heart and cross symbol alone is allowed only when the name of the organization is within close proximity of the symbol. In these cases, the symbol is to be placed as close as possible to the name of the organization.

The symbol is never to be used as a stand-alone representation of the brand.

There may be exceptions in rare cases.
