Greetings: On behalf of the International Southern Christian Leadership Conference, (SCLC), I welcome each of you to 51st Annual Convention in the beautiful City of Memphis, Tennessee We feel that you have taken the first step to helping to embrace the change in the air, that will restore your neighborhoods and your communities. We planned a Conference that addresses a broad spectrum of concerns within the country today, in the areas of health, education and activism. Our theme, “The Legacy, The City, The Man, The Vision” tells the story of the over 50 year journey of SCLC and how we got to where we are today. We believe that there is no better place to tell the story of what SCLC stands and stood for them from the steps of Memphis where our founder give his life for the everyday working man in this country. We came to let you know that the dream has not been fulfilled that only partial payment has been made on the promissory note and SCLC will stay the course as we becoming renewed in Memphis. I thank Rev. Dwight Montgomery, president of the local SCLC Chapter for inviting us into this great city and the many levels of support his has given. Thanks to the Conference planning Chairs, nationally Mrs. Cheryl Spencer and locally, Ms. Patrice Gray and Ms. Cheryl Gray to the national staff and mostly to all our volunteers for the many hours you have spent making the Conference a reality. We could not have asked for a better environment to have this Conference. Finally, we appreciate all of our sponsors. Your gifts and support helped to make this Conference possible. Enjoy your conference.

Chairman of the Board Rev. Raleigh Trammell

Friends and Supporters, The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), welcomes you to our 51st Annual National Convention. Since the organization’s inception in 1957, SCLC’s purpose has been to “Redeem the Soul of America." Today, the SCLC continues to serve as a major catalyst for positive e change. History has taught us that collaborations with the faith community, educational intuitions, people of all cultures and creeds are imperative to the life of SCLC and the community it serves. Hence this year’s convention themed, “The Legacy, The Man, The City, The Vision” is celebrating its core… the grass-root community. In this spirit, the convention events are being held throughout the city of Memphis, in the communities and with those to whom we serve. Your continued support will enable us to remain on the frontlines of everyday advocacy as a nonprofit, nonpartisan and interfaith, social advocacy organization committed to nonviolence and to achieving social, economic and political justice. We appreciate your support as we celebrate this milestone in our history and our return Memphis, TN. Respectfully,

Byron C. Clay Dr. Byron c. Clay President/CEO SCLC

August 2009 Dear Delegates: Welcome to Memphis! On behalf of the Memphis Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, I extend a hearty welcome to all attendees of the 51st Annual SCLC Convention. Whether you have traveled near or far, I pray your pilgrimage to Memphis will be a rich and rewarding experience. It is altogether fitting that we should meet in a city so profoundly connected to both the struggle for human and civil rights and our co-founder Dr. King, who supported the striking sanitation workers in that struggle. In his last public address, not only did Dr. King champion the cause of those workers, but he also stated in closing, “I just want to do God’s will.” As I welcome you to Memphis, my prayer for all delegates echoes the words and the challenge of Dr. King. May each of us “just want to do God’s will” in a more sincere and substantive way. May this convention bless each of us clearly to know and be equipped to do God’s will. The days ahead may not look as foreboding and challenging as those Dr. King faced in 1969. Indeed, events of 2009 have been truly and remarkably encouraging. However, there is much left to do to create the just and humane society – “the beloved community” – envisioned by Dr. King. May this convention help you find your intended place in building God’s Kingdom here on earth. Enjoy your stay in Memphis, make new acquaintances, relish existing relationships, absorb the culture and music, but attack the barbeque ribs in moderation!

To God be all the honor and glory,

Reverend Dwight R. Montgomery President, SCLC Memphis Chapter

August 2009 Dear Southern Christian Leadership Conference Attendees, 2009 is a historic year for our nation. President Barack Obama has proven the American dream is alive and well. While the housing market and overall economy have fallen on hard times, they are on the rise and better days are ahead. I am proud to say that the Government National Mortgage Association, or Ginnie Mae, is doing its part to help thousands of Americans achieve the dream of homeownership. Ginnie Mae is a wholly-owned government corporation within the Department of Housing and Urban Development. It was established by Congress in 1968 with a single mission: expand affordable housing for low- and moderate-income Americans by linking the global capital markets to the nation’s housing market. Ginnie Mae does not do this by loaning money directly to homebuyers or purchasing mortgage loans. Instead, we guarantee securities that are backed by Federal Housing Administration and Veterans Administration mortgages—with the full faith and credit of the U.S. Government. Ginnie Mae has spent the last 40 years helping restore confidence and stability to our nation’s housing market. Because of this commitment, Ginnie Mae has provided homeownership opportunities for millions of Americans in every U.S. state and territory. I invite all of you to visit our Web site www.ginniemae.gov. Sincerely, Joseph Murin | President, Ginnie Mae
