2013 SCLAA Scholarship winner announced

he Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia (SCLAA), in conjunction with the UQ Business School Executive Education, announced the winner of the second national SCLAA Scholarship which provides a place to attend the UQ Supply Chain & Logistics Management Course. The winner of the 2013 UQ Scholarship is Athol Carter, Transport Operations Coordinator, Ostwald Bros Transport. Mr Brad Maye, Business Development Manager, said that UQ Business School Executive Education is pleased to have partnered with the SCLAA to offer a full scholarship for the 2013 Supply Chain & Logistics Management course.

SCLAA to assist SME’s with Energy Efficiency
s a part of the $743,310 grant from the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism the SCLAA will be working to develop and deliver a comprehensive and targeted program called Energy Efficiency Solutions for Australian transport and logistics SMEs. This project aims to deliver a comprehensive closed loop program for SCLAA members and other SMEs in the supply chain and logistics sector. The SCLAA will do this through the provision of targeted tools, resources and training tailored specifically to assist our substantial membership, contacts and the 409,756 SMEs across Australia who warehouse, distribute and/or transport goods to improve their energy efficiency. The program will be delivered face-to-face at 30 locations in every State and Territory across Australia and all components will be available on-line.

73 qualified mentors for industry
A
n Australian-first for the Supply Chain, Logistics and Transport industries will see 73 members and friends of the Supply Chain & Logistics Association (SCLAA) become qualified mentors for industry in Queensland. For many years, the industry has been tack ling the need to qualif y mentors in a consistent way. Since late 2011, the Transport and Logistics Industry Skills Council (TLISC) with members of the Transport and Logistics Workforce Advisory Groups (TLWAG) across Australia and the Transport and Logistics Centre (TALC) have supported and contributed to the development of a mentoring skill set which will now provide Statements of Attainment to industry participants. Supported by TLISC through the National Work force Development Fund (NWDF), the SCLAA are pleased to be able to establish the pilot program to trial this new skill set for industry. During September and October the participants will attend workshops run by Queensland based training organisations, Major Operator and Driver Training and Strategix Training Group. Both organisations are now ready to deliver this new offering for industry.

Knowing how to mentor your teams and individuals is what can move good managers to great leaders” said Matt Tenkate, General Manager at Major Driver Operator Training. “We are very pleased to be part of this pilot to increase mentoring capability across the industry.” Mr Tenkate said. Mr Vince Aisthorpe, Queensland President, SCLAA, said that this skill set has become available just at the right time. “At SCLAA, we have had a focus on mentoring our members, but sometime the number of experienced mentors cannot meet the increasingly high number of mentees. This program will inject 73 new mentors into industry, all consistently developed to a high standard under the new skill set TLIM4004A Mentor Individuals and Small Groups.” Mr Aisthorpe said. Strategix Training Group could not agree more. “At Strategix we have long had an interest in mentoring with our clients and participants. This is a natural extension for businesses to be able to have a consistent way to build that skill.” said Wayne Striplin, National Operations Manager at Strategix Training Group. NSW Members head to Coca-Cola
O
n a brisk August morning, the excitement of attendees palpable in anticipation of seeing first-hand the internal workings of the world class Coca-Cola Amatil (CCA) High Bay Warehouse located in Northmead, Sydney. During more than thirty years in Northmead CCA has experienced continual volume growth and SKU proliferation. This had created challenges both operationally and financially. The decision was made to build a warehouse and distribution facility that would accommodate not only current needs but also facilitate growth and customer service delivery for projected future demand. The vision was for a system that will completely modernise the way warehousing is conducted and: 1) Provide a safe working environment. 2) Achieve world’s best practice levels of: a) Customer service. b) Operational Costs. c) Stock accuracy. d) Inventory management. 3) Facilitate CCA’s strategic growth platform. 4) Consolidate storage onto a single site. 5) Address chain of responsibility requirements for transport. 6) Deliver accurate and timely replenishment to CCA’s other DC’s Australia wide. Attendees witnessed a fully automated system that included over 1.5km of conveyor, monorail pallet transportation, storage cranes and truck loading docks that can move 740 pallets /hr and has a capacity to store 55,432 pallets without physical human intervention. In addition to the operational excellence achieved by the Northmead site it has also been awarded a number of environmental awards, including one from the SCLAA for its capture of rain water and regenerating surrounding bushland. or the fourth consecutive year the SCLAA, Queensland Division, is up to the challenge of coordinating the supply and packing of 600 Christmas Hampers as part of their Christmas Party on 6th of December, Officers Mess, Victoria Barracks. Is your Company and are your employees up to the challenge of assisting with this project? HOW? By providing one or more items listed below in the quantity required, which will be added to items already donated. If your company would prefer to donate funds we have suppliers who are willing to provide products at cost or heavily discounted. The SCLAA will arrange the collection and storage of all ‘challenge items’. The hampers will be distributed through Foodbank to Queensland charities prior to Christmas and will help make Christmas more enjoyable for those less fortunate than ourselves. Kmart Site Visit
I
n August, 41 friends and members of the SCLAA, Queensland Division, attended a site visit to remember at the new Kmart Distribution Centre at Lytton. When Wesfarmers bought the Coles group in 2007, it planned to sell off the Kmart business. But by 2008, Kmart had not only been retained but endowed with a $300 million supply chain investment over five years. In 2012, Kmart achieved its 10th consecutive quarter of growth, thanks to improvement in culture leadership, range, better sourcing, stock management and a continued drive towards business efficiencies. They still maintain 'everyday items for families at the lowest prices' as their business mantra. In 2008, Kmart had 14 distribution centres, now with the investment in the new 56,000 m2 integrated Lytton DC Kmart operates more efficiently with a VINCE AISTHORPE total of only five in Australia. Kmart is the largest retail importer by volume in PRESIDENT Australia. The 41 attendees were able to see the facility in full operation and QLD DIVISION received a rare insight into a distribution centre of this magnitude. We are fortunate to have Jeanne Snider as our Emcee. Jeanne currently provides highly effective one-to-one coaching and consulting, and she provides equally effective group development due to her depth of knowledge and her dynamic style, she produced television commercials, music videos and training films for ten years in Los Angeles and Melbourne. Jeanne has a flair for adding innovation, creativity, and insight to her programs, so we are in for a really interesting evening. T
he Future Leaders Group (FLG), VIctorian Division recently organised a site tour at General Motors Holden Engine Operations Site (HEO). This site is based in Port Melbourne, Victoria and produces global V6 engines for both domestic and export markets. Among the many variants produced are for vehicles such as the new VF Commodore Evoke, SSV Redline, Calais, Sportswagon as well as the Captiva and Colorado. The Global V6 plant has three machining and sub-assembly lines which prepare blocks, crankshafts and cylinder heads before they are moved to a common line for final engine assembly. WA Update
T
he last couple of months have been busy with the WA committee finalising arrangements for the remaining events of the year, including the annual Golf Day, Awards ceremony and a Westrac DC Site Visit. The committee is now a well-balanced mix of seasoned industry professionals, and enthusiastic younger pace setters, characterised by strong female representation, but would welcome more industry representatives. In August at an evening function at the PTA headquarters, the WA Transport and Logistics Awards, jointly supported by the SCLAA and CILTA were launched. Guest speaker was Hon Troy Buswell MLA, Minister for Transport, ably supported by 6PR’s Steve Mills, the recent awards Emcee. Troy outlined the significance of the awards to the industry, and launched this year’s four categories, Young Professional of the Year Award; the Award for Excellence; the Supply Chain Management Award and the Innovation Award. Speeches about the significance of the awards then followed from Peter Lindsay-McFadyen and Jamie Bradford (CILTA) and
Stanley Fan, (SCLAA WA), and five previous winners of the Young Professional of the Year Award (Michael Holden, Daniel Di Stasio, Rhiannon Russell and Owen Thomas). In August, Stanley Fan (SCLAA) and Stephen Murdoch (apicsAU), represented the Supply Chain and Logistics industry, and supported the university’s courses in the discipline, at Curtin University’s Open Day. Both participated in a session entitled 'Ignite a career in business information systems, supply chain management and logistics' sharing first hand experiences of the profession, the competencies required and the myriad of career opportunities with school-leavers and their parents. Stanley also highlighted the invaluable benefits of professional association membership summarising by saying that “By participating in the Curtin Open Day, we were able to give students good overview of what this profession is about and hopefully inspire tomorrow’s Supply Chain future leaders.” The SCLAA, WA Division, is committed to building professionalism and competence in the sector and is appreciative of the opportunity to work alongside Curtin and other associations to attract students into the profession and to support then once they are there.
