SCLAA National Chairman - Amanda O'Brien Amanda O'Brien is the Chairman of the SCLAA. Amanda is a Transport & Logistics Professional and the CEO and Managing Director of Australian Worldwide Logistics Pty Ltd trading as Xtreme Freight with head office based in Melbourne.

The economic environment has been less than buoyant in recent times despite reports from Government and news. The buzz words at the moment ‘fake news!’ are becoming particularly poignant in a volatile globalised market-place.

The supply chain is facing enormous challenges at the moment which inevitably impact on all providers. With the recent Port Infrastructure charges on the rise again, slot fees are doubling and carriers will bear the brunt of these increased costs. There seems little relief for the road transport provider who is facing declining volumes, aggressive price reductions required by multinationals and SMEs alike and an ever increasing burden of regulation and rising fuel prices.

The ability to innovate or compete in this market is becoming increasingly difficult. Ultimately road carriers require the costs to be passed on to the end customer to accept and commercially the ability to service customers has become progressively more difficult. There has been a 35% spike in liquidations of companies over the last 3 months. This cannot be good for our economy and jobs growth.

The ultimate goal is for business to reduce their costs but this is unfortunately falling into the lap of the carrier who is forced to absorb these or simply go out of business. Even the new biosecurity levy introduced by the Federal Government will inevitably be another risk to carriers who will be asked to manage the collection of this levy.

The cash flow of business is vital to survival in business but paying out these increased costs on behalf of customers can push medium and small providers into a situation where they cannot afford to service the customer. It appears that these current imposts and price wars are unsustainable longterm and can seriously affect the efficiencies of the wider supply chain.

How can business innovate, train, maintain service levels and employ people at our current labour rates when competing with the rest of the world? Such burdens are placing increased financial pressure on the carrier and it would seem the relationships with the end customer are becoming increasingly fragile. Business must brace to better prepare for their processes, people and communications to their end customers to be heightened in this significant wave of direct cost increase. Increasingly reviewing the ways supply chains operate and implementing new procedures to drive efficiencies in the current economic environment is essential for survival.

When government wants to build and invest in new infrastructure but unable to raise sufficient funds from our hard earned taxes, this results in selling our key monopolies such as ports and airports, essentially selling our assets. Domestic rail and road service hubs will be paramount to drive the efficiencies and services with the boom in population to keep the supply chain moving.

The increasing trade tensions in the global economy are continuing to cause friction which is a key indicator of loss of business confidence and growth. Domestically building resilience as the economic tensions between China and U.S continue, will be a factor in a market that is having a substantial effect on our tariffs and diminishing our ability to compete.

These growing tensions do pose a substantially big threat on Australia’s economic and financial security. In circles the key issues that are discussed are recurring themes that tax payers are most concerned with are interest rate rises, the economy, financial issues including taxation, bank interest rates, terrorism, unemployment, housing availability, foreign ownership and investment and transport infrastructure. Although a broad area, they inevitably come up in conversation and the impact of the current economic environment and instability has definitely impacted on business confidence.

So it would be remissive of me not to include COR with the new laws that came into effect on 1st October 2018 under the Heavy Vehicle National Law. Are you still not prepared?

Corporate fines are five times the amount of individual fines and there are varying degrees of severity. Worse-case scenario is for Category 1 Recklessness breaches which include five years imprisonment, $300,000 for individuals and $3,000,000 for corporations. It has been previously mentioned that with the increased regulation and steps, companies need to implement and update their management systems and actively assess staff training and the control CoR risk is paramount.

So, with all these factors and increased burdens on individuals and businesses alike, trust and the morality of society starts to erode and the biggest impact to this is mental health. There is a stigma in speaking about this but it poses an even bigger threat to our communities, businesses, individuals and our tightly fabricated societal values of Australian culture.

We, as a diverse society from Government to communities, need to increase our efforts to address this big problem that can effectively undermine the future of our young minds. Dealing with an increasing technological, profit driven and volatile world, there is a sense that this is lying underneath the surface and can have substantial consequences if not addressed. It affects all generations who with instant gratification turn to increasingly mind-numbing vices, which in turn breaks down our relationships and moral values which are key to sustaining our communities and standards in Australia.

And so, in the midst of an increasingly complex society, it is more important than ever to support your fellow Supply Chain Professionals at the ASCL Awards on 23rd November, 2018. Come

and network to build and sustain, applaud and congratulate your fellow Australians who are striving to make an impact and improve our important supply chains both in Australia and overseas. It is also poignant that having our event at the iconic Luna Park in Sydney may well be the last time it’s doors open, so it makes it extra special to celebrate at this location.

Luna Park will soon be closing its doors as an Australian icon, fundamentally as a consequence of the challenging financial and economic times we live in.

Australian Trusted Trader Australian Trusted Trader (ATT) is operated by the Department of Home Affairs and Australian Border Force (ABF) and provides global recognition of exporters and importers with compliant trade practices and a secure supply chain. It rewards them with faster customs clearance and a number of other benefits to reduce red tape. ATT is voluntary, free to join and has no ongoing fees.

Benefits for Trusted Traders include an ABF account manager, easier access to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Travel Card for business travellers, streamlined access to becoming an accredited sponsor for the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa, free monthly reporting for imports and exports under the business’ Australian Business Number (ABN), use of the Trusted Trader logo and more.

Why Intelligent Fulfilment is the Future of Customer Experience

Consumers have been enjoying the benefits of online shopping for years. The flexibility, availability of customer reviews, personalised offerings and product suggestions based on past purchase behaviours are only a few of the perks that make online shopping more appealing than a brick-andmortar retail store.

While the rise of e-commerce across the retail and consumer goods industry is good news for consumers, it’s sending ripples through the supply-chain. With orders rapidly increasing, the demand for faster merchandise deliveries is redefying traditional distribution – with 77 per cent of warehouses struggling to meet new same-day-delivery expectations .

Supply-chain management system are under pressure to not only keep products stocked and logged, but to enable seamless product locating for quick and accurate dispatching.

With customers demanding for same-day delivery, the outdated supply-chain processes will no longer viable.

Warehouse managers will need unprecedented visibility over stock to monitor its journey through the supply-chain including the transportation route.

The ‘I want it now’ instant-gratification mindset is feeding consumer cravings for faster and faster delivery, with industry players feverishly working to fulfil demand. Over the next five years 67 per cent of logistic companies expect to provide same-day-delivery .

So how do warehouses overcome these new challenges? The answer – intelligent fulfilment.

Through technology, warehouse operations can become more “intelligent” and anticipate, analyse and adapt product levels to align with demand. Retailers, manufacturers and logistics companies are collaborating and swapping roles in uncharted

ways to meet shoppers’ omnichannel product fulfilment and delivery expectations in a plot that is still unfolding.

For example, by 2028, 93 per cent of warehouses anticipate droids (small autonomous vehicles that deliver parcels via sidewalks instead of streets), will be a key delivery method to meet delivery demands.

Within the warehouse, workers are being outfitted with mobile computers that enable quick, automated inventory and cycle counting – for nimble omnichannel order fulfilment. Radiofrequency identification (RFID) solutions are being deployed to give real-time visibility streamline operations and minimise data errors.

Furthermore, robotics, artificial intelligence (AI) and automation are being leveraged to perform traditionally manual tasks such as picking, sorting, inspecting, handling and classifying products for improved efficiency, worker productivity and speed-to-market. Additionally, AI in conjunction with machine learning is able to anticipate, analyse and adapt product levels – specifically around changing ecosystems such as seasonal demand, or even predict future challenges.

Integrated order management, real-time scheduling and accurate tracking are just some of the way intelligent fulfilment can help improve the customer experience.

ASCL Awards Gala Dinner Guest Speaker Announced Commissioner Mr Michael Outram APM, Commissioner of the Australian Border Force

The SCLAA is proud to announce that Commissioner Mr Michael Outram APM, Commissioner of the Australian Border Force (ABF) will be the guest speaker at the 58th Australian Supply Chain & Logistics Awards (ASCL Awards) Gala Dinner to be held in the Ballroom, Luna Park, Sydney on Friday, 23 November. Michael joined the Immigration and Border Protection Portfolio on 9 March 2015 and was sworn in as Commissioner of the Australian Border Force (ABF) on 14 May 2018.

Michael brings to the ABF over 30 years of law enforcement experience in a diverse range of specialised areas, including community policing, covert operations, criminal intelligence, protective and major event security, public order management, and the investigation of terrorism, transnational organised crime, corruption and other serious crime types.

Michael was awarded the Australian Police Medal in 2014 in recognition of his outstanding service in law enforcement. In 2014 he was also awarded a Master of Business & Technology degree by the University of New South Wales and won a university prize for academic achievement. In April 2018, Michael completed the Harvard Kennedy School executive education programme Leadership in Crises: Preparation and Performance, which he attended having won a Sir James Wolfensohn Public Service Scholarship.

Mike is widely recognised for his robust approach to policy development and his preparedness to strongly advocate the need for reform. As Minister he led on behalf of Government the public debate on issues such as measures to reduce alcohol related violence, rampant gang/gun related crime and introduced initiatives to change driver behaviour.

Leaving Parliament in 2017 he has now taken the role as CEO of Ports Australia, the peak industry body for the Ports industry. Mike is already well underway in lifting the awareness of the Port sector and the important role it plays in Australia’s future.

Research by Localz and YouGov revealed a shocking 71% of respondents felt physical and emotional disturbance around scheduled appointments.

What is the emotional impact of delivery appointments and what do organisations need to be doing to bring their services into the new digital era?

Lack of choice and control is the main factor contributing to the stress and anxiety for today’s consumer. By adapting your current model you could relieve this stress and in turn create loyal customers.

Today’s consumers want: Flexibility - consumers want to be able to change the date, time and location so the service or parcel delivery can fit into their schedules.

Transparency - 60% of respondents would feel less stressed if they could live track their delivery on an app or website.

Direct Communication - 86% mentioned they would rather communicate directly with the delivery person and have the liberty to change the delivery day and date.

Clarity - 75% of consumers want to know exactly when to expect their parcel. This is why the all day delivery slots need to be a thing of the past. We cannot expect people to sit indoors for an 8 hour window, we need to get more specific and in fact our survey revealed that the hours of 6pm - 8pm is the most preferred time slot.

Brian Lynn - WA President In the third quarter of 2018 SCLAA (WA) had the something for the three 's's: students, sportsmen and fully fledged supply chain professionals.

In early September Roy Hill were once again our hosts. It was fascinating to witness how the organisation's strategy of Making MRO Supply Chains Relevant in a Digital Economy, as eloquently described to the association in front of a sizeable audience in July 2017 at Crown, is being forged in concrete, steel and human endeavour. An SCLAA party comprising seasoned professionals and current students hosted Roy Hill's Supply Chain Manager, Martin O'Connor. Martin and his team conducted guided tours of their new Perth DC and described how their operation works.Particularly evident, along with the industry knowledge of Martin and his colleagues, was the feeling that this is just the start of something big (justification for another follow up event!), and Roy Hill’s willingness to both share its ideas and to be open to external input. Networking over light snacks and drinks concluded an excellent evening.

The focus shifted to ECU in October. In the first of two sessions entitled “What determines the success of young professionals in Logistics and Supply Chain Management?” Yury Sukhov, SCLAA WA Future Leaders Group president and Stanley Fan, SCLAA National Committee member provided a group of ECU’s Supply Chain and Logistics Management students, and fellow professionals with insights from their transitions from university to industry and recommendations as to how the students should develop themselves. Both spoke from the heart and provided some valuable advice to the potential WA Supply Chain leader of the future. This event will be repeated at Curtin on 18th October.

logistics calendar once again came around. The 19th Peter Smith Memorial Golf Day took place at the Gosnells golf course. Dan Di Stasio and his partner Mel once again delivered a fantastic event, under mostly sunny skies, that was thoroughly enjoyed by the almost one hundred competitors. Over the post tournament buffet and drinks, Corine Smith, Peter’s widow delivered, in her own inimitable style, a number of much appreciated moments of humour. Some fantastic golf was on display with the Winning Team from Toll Energy (Warren McHardie, Jason Barham, Ashley Corbitt, Sean McCann) scoring 59 off the stick.

Days like this are not possible without the support that the SCLAA receives from sponsors. On the 1st October 2018, the HVNL morphed significantly to align itself with Work Place Health and Safety Legislation. This was by no mistake, as the legislation was written to ensure that the listed ‘Parties’ written within the heavy vehicle national law would ensure so far as reasonably practicable, that safety within an organisation was managed by those who influence a transport task. The ‘Parties’ are Consignees, Consignors, Loading Managers and Loaders or Unloaders of goods, Schedulers, Operators and Packers. By virtue of what you do within your workplace, irrespective of what your role is called, if your role encompasses any of the ‘Party’ duties, then you are within the heavy vehicle national law reach and you should consider the fact that you have a legal liability to ensure safety within the scope of your role.

If you influence the safety of a transport task, it is now a prime duty to ensure so far as reasonably practicable that you are ensuring safety within that transport task. The term ‘Reasonable’ in the courts, is tested to a measure of what someone could similarly expect or expect of you within your role, by ensuring safety standards. In other words, if a standard can be proven to be capable in normal everyday circumstances, then it will be assumed that it is capable by any and all.

Importantly, within the ‘Parties’, there is no provision for drivers.

That is purposeful and is because drivers of heavy vehicles are encompassed by other legislation such as the Roads Act and drivers have other duties and responsibilities to ensure on road safety, although the Heavy Vehicle National Law legislation will also apply to the business that employs a driver. The Heavy Vehicle National Law is designed to address and ensure that businesses and the employees of those businesses who employ a transport task are now responsible for their actions or inactions which can cause harm.

In correlation with the heavy vehicle national law is the Executive Liability Provision. This legislation which is independent is aimed at re-enforcing the heavy vehicle national law, by making Executives, Directors and Senior Executives with the power to change or enforce budgets or spend within an organisation, solely responsible for enforcing the heavy vehicle national law within their organisations. The Executive Liability Provision is independent, and does not require an incident to instigate a discussion with or investigation by the regulator or other State Enforcement agencies. The executive liability provision gives the heavy vehicle national law its teeth and is why it is imperative that your safety system is always ‘Active’ within your organisation. What I mean by ‘Active’ 14

means a safety system which does not hang off a wall in a business, to make the business look nice for those that visit the business premises. If you have a safety system which only lives on your wall and something goes wrong, it will be too little too late and the conversation will be centred on how to mitigate your costs, which could be hundreds of thousands or even millions.

Financial risks in business in the 21st century, is like no other era before it. If you consider that most businesses nowadays struggle to obtain and maintain a 10% margin and growth is usually found to be less than double digits as well, you cannot afford to wipe out your margin, on the actions of someone else in your supply chain. Even for a business worth $100m today in Australia, the risk that Chain of Responsibility now brings into just about every supply chain, could force the doors to shut on that business for the very last time.

But that’s not all, if you haven’t heard about the risk of jail, when it comes to breaking the Heavy Vehicle National Law and someone’s recklessness, jail terms can be as much as 5 years for an individual. Furthermore, directors have already been forced to resign as an enforceable undertaking handed down by the courts, although they may retain ownership of the business and be forced to participate in an audit which the authorities such as Vic Roads or the RMS adjudicate.

When weighing up all of these risks, it really pays to stay in front of the regulator and ensure safety in your supply chain. The regulator just launched a hotline to report transport related risks. I hope you don’t have a disgruntled employee. Importantly, the information reported through the hotline may be used in current investigations that the regulator is managing. When the regulator is undertaking an investigation they have the power to turnup on your site and demand to see and records. They can also access records that the RMS in NSW or Vic Roads and Qld Main Roads may be holding and correlate that data, to be used in connection with an investigation.

So, may I suggest the next burning question when managing an active safety system in your business and relying on your current health and safety team to expose all the risks and ensure a duty of care is this: who has taken the time to ensure your transport providers have made you aware of all the speeding infringements they have received while carrying your freight in the last 6 months, or more? If your business hasn’t asked your vendors this question as an absolute minimum, I strongly suggest you start today.

Gary Pearce - ACT/SNSW President Regrettably, due to work commitments Gary Pearce has stepped down as the ACT/SNSW Board Director. Being a Senior Principal Consultant (ILS/Logistics) on a full-time Defence task, Gary felt he could not dedicate sufficient time and value to the role.

By stepping down, he is giving a fellow ACT/SNSW member the opportunity to consider taking on this very important role. At a recent Committee Meeting, Mike Steele indicated that he would consider filling the role, at least on a temporary basis - hopefully the vacancy will be filled in the near future.

Gary enjoyed his time on the Board (just short of three years) and along with the other hardworking Board members believes he contributed to SCLAA’s strategy, vision, values and mission by ensuring the association remains viable and effective in the present and into the future. Gary is confident that the current Board will ensure the ongoing outstanding performance of the SCLAA and continue with the future plans and strategies to keep SCLAA as the leading supply chain and logistics industry association. He would like to thank the other Directors for the camaraderie and assistance afforded him and wishes them well.

He will still continue on as the ACT/SNSW President, at least until elections at the next Divisional General in February 2019.

QinetiQ and Australian War Memorial bring Aviation’s Golden Age to Life QinetiQ Australia, one of our long-standing member organisations is assisting the Australian War Memorial to revitalise and restore the country’s most significant aviation assets, including the Hudson Mark IV Bomber currently on display at Canberra Airport.

The Hudson was one of the most versatile aircraft used by Allied air forces in the early part of the Second World War, and first saw action in the Pacific when the Japanese attacked Malaya before the raids on Pearl Harbour.

As part of their two-year sponsorship of the Australian War Memorial, QinetiQ will assist in restoring the Hudson’s nose cone, which became damaged and needed replacement. This restoration will see the bomber returned to a pristine display condition. As one can appreciate this will require a fair amount of logistical and supply chain know-how to undertake the tasks required.

In addition to the Hudson rehabilitation, an engineering assessment was required on the condition of the V2 Mielerwagen Rocket Trailer, which was completed in August this year. The Meillerwagen (English: Meiller Vehicle) was a German World War II trailer used to transport a V-2 rocket from the 'trans loading point' of the Technical Troop Area to the 'launching point', also to erect the missile on the Brennstand (English: firing stand), and to act as the service gantry for fuelling and launch preparation.

Dr Nelson AO, Director of the Australian War Memorial, said the partnership with QinetiQ enables new opportunities to tell more stories of Australia’s military history.

QinetiQ provides provisional services to Government, Defence and Industry, not only engineering services outlined above, but services also in logistics, asset management, security and commercial/contracting just to mention a few. The committee is exploring opportunities to include the Australian War Memorial as a site visit during 2019.

National Mailing and Marketing nominate for the 2018 ASCL Awards National Mailing and Marketing are once again flying the flag for the ACT & SNSW Division by nominating for the 2018 ASCL Awards This year NMM have been nominated for the ASCL Environmental Excellence Award showcasing their broad approach to recycling and general waste management, illustrating the financial and environmental benefits that can be extended to their customers, contractors, employees and the broader community. NMM have recently been accredited as an ActSmart Business recycler through a program sponsored by the ACT Government, and continue to allocate resources to identifying further opportunities and initiatives for waste minimisation.

Joshua Holmes - NSW Director SCLAA were invited to attend the Blacktown Foundation Launch in early September to celebrate another step towards achieving their vision for the future of Blacktown City – The Talented City.

Western Sydney is Australia’s third largest economy ($95 billion GDP) after Sydney and Melbourne CBD, and widely recognised as Australia’s growth engine with Australia’s largest manufacturing sector, presenting the opportunity for an international university to engage with local industry and businesses committed to student placement and research.

Blacktown is in the heart of a major Supply Chain, Transport and Logistics hub, growing exponentially with a projected population growth of 522,000 by 2036. We are hoping the University that is successful, can offer pathways in Supply Chain and Logistics to support the growth of our industry, as well as many other industries, opening up more & more opportunities for our future.

The establishment of a University campus in Blacktown City took a big step towards reality on the 4th September, with Blacktown Mayor Stephen Bali MP calling for Expressions of Interest (EOI) from universities to partner with Council and Businesses to establish a campus in Blacktown CBD. “A university campus in our CBD is a vital part of our vision for transforming Blacktown City,” Mayor Bali said. By 2036 half of Sydney’s population will live in Western Sydney and yet today we only have 18 per cent of university places in the Greater Sydney region. There are 54,000 higher education students living within 30 minutes of Blacktown. There are 18,000 talented university students living in Blacktown City – but currently they all have to travel long distances to attend their courses,” Mayor Bali said. " “The EOI process ensures there is proper governance in place and that all potential University partners are treated in a fair and equitable way.

Local businesses were well represented at the launch with Greater Blacktown Business Chamber, Vitex, and Sydney Business Park, all agreeing to partner Blacktown City Council in moving forward with the concept of a university campus situated in the Blacktown CBD. Greater Blacktown Business Chamber Vice President Bob Turner said, “This is truly a win-win for Business and the Blacktown Community.

Blacktown businesses could provide real-world opportunities for training and workforce placement for students and a University could provide a local industrial research bed."

The EOI documentation is being officially released on 5 September, closing on 5 December 2018. Council will then work through the submissions and have detailed discussions on how best to establish a comprehensive university presence in Blacktown City.

As the sun was shining later in September, Swisslog and Coca Cola Amatil opened up the doors allowing new and existing members an opportunity to have a look at the High Bay DC at Northmead.

The Coca-Cola Amatil High Bay DC at Northmead has been very successful, winning both the efficiency and environmental awards.

It delivers an impressive 100% inventory accuracy to allow full order delivery, increased capacity and stock rotation. This state-of-the-art warehouse is the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the highest throughput handling systems in the world.

In addition to effectively enabling significant growth, Northmead High Bay has provided Coca-Cola Amatil with the ability to consolidate NSW warehousing operations, improve efficiency and incorporate environmental initiatives.

Charles Edwards - VIC State President Spring is upon us! As the year draws to a close we reflect on what has been a rewarding year of growth in the SCLAA Vic/Tas committee, professional base and initiatives.

SCLAA is committed to driving thought leadership and engagement across the supply chain and logistics community in Vic/Tas. As far as we are concerned, driving this is our only purpose. To that cause, we believe 2018 has been a great success on all measures. We have delivered rapid growth in all of our events & programs both in frequency, quality and attendance.

Our industry (not unlike many others today) is in a rapid state of change. The world is moving very quickly, and in order to remain competitive and successful, we cannot stress enough the importance of cross-collaboration; across personal networks, technologies, skillsets, and education. Remaining relevant today requires individuals and organisations alike to be constantly working on these skills and developing themselves.

We would argue this makes platforms and associates such as the SCLAA more and more important as a melting pot of new connections and ideas. For example, the integration of “STEM” (or science, technology, engineering and maths) backgrounds into the supply chain space is undoubtedly on the rise a, a trend we do not see slowing any time soon. If you’ve been to our events, you too would be noticing the great variety of backgrounds the supply chain and logistics industry is drawing interest from. It is definitely an exciting space to be in!

Highlights This Issue NETWORKING NIGHT - 21 September The SCLAA VIC Networking Night was hosted on a warm spring evening on Friday 21 September 2018. It was to-date one of VIC’s best social networking evenings with a turnaround of approximately 60 guests – both comprising of members and non-members. As the organiser for the VIC networking events, it’s great to see so many new faces and seasoned supporters continuingly supporting SCLAA in our goal to bring those in the industry together! It was great to see a large group from diverse career backgrounds, those who were industry leaders, aspiring young professionals, educators and literally anyone who was curious about the Logistics and Supply Chain management industry.

So If you’re ever in Melbourne and your free time aligns with SCLAA’s VIC events, please make an effort to come because it really does add value in knowing who’s-who, growing your network, and making life-long mates who may be able to lend a helping hand in the future.

AUSTRALIAN SUPPLY CHAIN TECHNOLOGY SURVEY REPORT PUBLISHED In February 2018, the SCLAA and Swinburne University of Technology conducted a national survey to assess supply chain and logistics professional’s perceptions and actions towards nine key emergent technologies expected to impact the industry over the coming decade. The paper draws some interesting insights.

Some technologies are seeing significant investment already, and others offer opportunity due to differences in expected impact-versus-investment in particular sectors.

Takeaways include IoT and Big Data Analytics being the most anticipated technologies, with potential competitive advantage opportunities lying across these technologies and Blockchain.

On 1 August 2018, the SCLAA successfully launched their second annual Mentoring Program! The program consists of the program launch, Vative yellow belt training, career workshop and several informal mentoring touch points. Events will span from August to December 2018. A total of 32 mentees / mentors are participating in this years program (compared to just 10 participants in 2017).

During the launch, mentees and mentors were introduced to the program, objectives and calendar of events. Our external facilitators (Selection Partners) also ran a 1 hour collaborative session. Here mentees and mentors got to know one another through some informal activities, agreed on expectations and formulated a plan for their relationship going forward. After the event, participants were invited to a SCLAA Thought Leadership event at WeWork. Overall the program launch was highly successful, and we are looking forward to the next event.

Focus on a Committee Member Victorian SCLAA Committee Member - Dr Lai Yin (Elsie) Hooi |

What is your current occupation?

I’m an academic with the School of Business IT and Logistics at RMIT University. I have managed two courses offered in the Bachelor of Business Logistics and Supply Chain Management – Transportation and Freight Logistics as well as Warehouse and Distribution Channels. Informally, I am also “occupied” (okay admittedly..passionate) with connecting students, research and industry.

Why did you join SCLAA? I joined SCLAA because of the association’s key objectives to connect all members within supply chains via a wide range of events e.g. site visits, social networking, high level discussions with industry leaders on current issues in logistics and supply chain management (LSCM). Since 2000, I attended events organised by different associations e.g. the Logistics Association of Australia, Chartered Institute of Transport etc. to keep abreast with critical developments and increase industry networks. I found myself attending more events organised by the SCLAA because there was diversity in terms of events offered as well as members from varied industries e.g. manufacturing, production, retail, events and even humanitarian.

Why did you choose supply chain?

I was introduced to the logistics industry when I was 16 and became passionate about everything related to logistics (I’ve completed a diploma, bachelor, masters and PhD in logistics!) It was only natural that the passion extended to supply chain management where focus moved to how quality relationships impact LSCM and eventuate into successful businesses.

What is the proudest moment of your career?

My proudest moment in my career would have to be when I received my PhD. For over 5 years, I had to juggle a full-time job that required several overseas travels per year, support families in Melbourne and Singapore, survived two traffic accidents and complete a thesis...it was a real test of endurance for me. I know I’ve expressed many thanks when I graduated but I would like to say it again because some of them are members of the SCLAA and they might be reading this article - I could not have done it without the people who supported me directly and indirectly. I am also at my ‘proudest’ when students that I have mentored achieve success academically and in their careers.

What are your career aspirations?

To be honest, I am currently in a really good position where I have been, and will continue to foster strong relationships with students, research, industry and each other. Knowing that students, graduates and businesses achieve success because of my ‘connections’ is an ‘addictive’ feeling. However, if I were to stop being a lecturer, I would still love to work in strategic partnerships in Universities because the higher education industry has evolved immensely over recent years where focus is now on strong engagement with industry.

Queensland Foodbank Hamper Packing Day - 7 December 2018

Eagle Farm Race Track - Function Area Every year the Supply Chain & Logistics Association of Australia (SCLAA) and the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), in collaboration with other industry associations, spend their Christmas Party differently. Rather than holding the standard Christmas Party the AIP Members are invited to be a part of something very special; packing 1000x Family Hampers and 300x Ladies Hampers which are given to Foodbank to help those in need during the holiday season.

Over the last seven years, our industry has packed over 6500 hampers to the value of in excess of $700,000 for people in need, with all of the items either donated, or the funds raised by the Association and the wider industry. We invite you, your staff, colleagues and families to come and help us pack the hampers on the 7th of December. All ages are invited to attend this special event with the oldest volunteer to date being 85 and the youngest 5. Help us make a difference in someone else’s life.

The Foodbank Christmas Hamper Packing Day is designed around people being able to "give" at this time of year to those a little less fortunate than us but also to receive.

Therefore, the format for the day commencing at around 10am at Eagle Farm Race Course and co-sponsored by the Brisbane Racing Club (BRC) includes: •

10am - Registration

10.30 am - Welcome and outline of the day

11 am - Commence packing of 1000 food Xmas Hampers and 300 Ladies Hampers

•

12.30 pm: Lunch (provided by the BRC) and includes gourmet sausages, variety of salads and breads. Note the cost of entry entitles you to two alcoholic drinks from the bar (beer, wine or champagne) with a cash bar available as well. Coffee, tea and soft drinks will be available free of charge throughout the day.

1.30 pm - Packing resumes

•

3pm - Complete packing and begin clean up. Commence karaoke and Xmas Carol "sing off, draw raffle and network with attendees.

4.30pm - Thank-you and conclusion of day

Please note: as part of the day’s activities you may be allocated various roles of "decanting" product, packing food and/or ladies’ hampers, participating in Xmas Caroling as well as encouraged to celebrate Xmas with like-minded people at this special time of the year. A Monster Raffle will also be run to help us to start to collect monies for next year’s hamper pack.
