SCLAA National Interim Chair - Sue Tomic Sue Tomic is Director/Principal Consultant for Chain Consulting Services, based in Sydney Appointed to the Board in 2019, Sue is currently SCLAA Interim Chair.

In the previous Newsletter, much was communicated regarding the Board and Committees future focused goals and the vision and the positioning of the SCLAA.

We have been listening to stakeholders with respect to what to retain, what we do well and reimagine future experiences, content and benefits.

It is timely that David Doherty’s article in this newsletter mentions, amongst other wise insights, Identity Foreclosure “a stage of self-identity discovery in which an individual has an identity but hasn’t explored other options or ideas”

Keep an eye out for SCLAA bringing this work to life!

This can also be true of Companies and Associations as well, remaining stuck in a particular version of themselves.

Exploring how your organisation, presents, to the world as well as how it is perceived, should be a regular undertaking.

Aligning the Identity presented (through Branding) with values, vision and reality of services you supply, should be natural evaluation and if necessary, facilitate change, in order to “face the future as better version of yourself” This has exactly been the focus of the Board and Committees these past months.

Exploring the questions of Who we are, What we Do, How we do it, and What makes SCLAA unique, as well as HOW we present the best version of WHAT we do, has resulted in very different answers to our current identity.

Committee Updates: The Marketing Committee has been busy in the background with activity aligned to the SCLAA Strategic plan.

This included research, workshops and briefings on brand, digital communications, website and member engagement.

We have been diving deep into member experience looking at National Partners and individual members-drawing on data from past and current members.

We have drawn on key information and themes from student presentations (surveys were part of the data collection process and recommendations) and further nationwide student surveys will be held in coming months.

We have used the statistics from our digital communications and website to see where site visitors are going, where they drop off and how they rate the user experience through a combination of data analytics and via reporting through our marketing partner to refine our website strategy.

We have been unpacking what is great about being a member of SCLAA and what areas can be improved.

The Training, Education & Development Committee had its first meeting in June 2021.

The TED Committee comprises of senior supply chain educators from reputable Australian institutions. In bringing together representatives from Education institutions with the SCLAA, and focus on working together to promote existing training/education/mentoring programs, this can produce high value and community benefits.

The Committee discussed its strategic goals regarding the promotion of educational/training, professional development, and mentoring programs.

The Committee’s insights will also contribute input to the Marketing Committee’s website strategy and design work that SCLAA has in the pipeline, to enhance user experience and future product/service offerings to its members.

The Committee will meet in July for tactical planning and setting specific milestones.

On a personal note, I am excited to see the formation of this particular Committee, chaired by Prof. Ben Fahimnia, Professor and Chair in Decision Sciences, Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies at The University of Sydney Business School There are many skills shortages in various sectors of the industry which need to be addressed. One of my passions and reasons for joining the SCLAA is to highlight the importance of Supply Chain, Logistics & freight to those outside of our industry, increase awareness of its existence and importance. Not many people think of how things move from A to B or how they come in to or go out of this country. This has certainly changed with COVID, but we are in an important position to ensure the sustainability of labour resources and professionals in the industry. Please take the time to read Michael Farragher’s article on Talent Shortage in this Newsletter!

In addition to Committee activities, we also progressed with launching the 2021 ASCLA Awards Event, Mentoring Programme, continuing to provide a plethora of webinars and face to face events (where permitted) and continued our growth in Corporate as well as individual membership.

I will end with an interesting Article written by Belinda Moore, on Associations (https://smsonline.net.au/wpcontent/uploads/2020/02/WHITEPAPER-AssociationApocalypse.pdf) and the critical fact that they should “become the facilitators of positive connections amongst their community and tribes” as fundamentally “People are driven by the need to belong and connect.”

This particular paper was written pre Covid but emphasises the relevance of associations like ours.

Maintaining connections has never been more important in these current times of uncertainty, Stay Connected and stay safe!

Talent Shortage is a Weak Link in the Supply Chain Talent Shortage is a Weak Link in the Supply Chain Michael Farragher – SCLAA Training, Education and Development Committee

Talent Shortage is a weak link, and creating major concerns for organisations across the Supply Chain Sector, which has been highlighted during this pandemic.

Reasons for talent shortage include; employee turnover, industrial growth, insufficient talent to meet demand, and changing technologies.

There are three major parties that influence the availability and skill of supply chain talent - employers, training and education organisations, and individuals. We can certainly tick the employers’, and training and education boxes; there are many organisations out there offering various courses in areas across Supply Operations like TAFE NSW. They offer various short courses, certificates up to a diploma, delivered face to face or by connected learning. Covering; Warehousing, Logistics, Procurement, Freight Forwarding, Custom Broking and more. The major shortfall is people entering the industry and current staff not upskilling.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) one in five (21 per cent) businesses reported having difficulty finding suitably skilled and qualified staff. ABS Head of Industry Statistics, John Shepherd, said the latest Business Impacts of COVID-19 Survey showed businesses are facing skills shortages and revealed they have plans to hire staff.

Why choose a career in Supply Chain 1. Job growth – Supply Chain is rapidly expanding sector, especially with the increase in eCommerce businesses.

2. Reasonably low barrier to entry – Some people believe you need a degree to get a role in Supply Chain Management, this is not the case! The right attitude, strong work ethic and basic knowledge around operations, and health and safety will get you a role as a picker and packer in an organisation. Starting near the bottom of the ladder means that the only direction to move is UP! Given the diversity of industries, and roles available in Supply Chain it follows that there is an equally extensive opportunity to develop a massive portfolio of personal and professional skills.

3. Opportunities for advancement - Within the supply chain, there are ample opportunities to move from entry-level roles, to middle-management, and further to director-level positions. In most companies Supply Chain jobs include planning, strategic procurement, logistics management, forklift operation, dispatching, scheduling, inventory control, assembly, processing, planning, buying, sourcing, packaging, quality control, inventory management, space planning, supplier

management, capacity and lean management, process design and transformation, IT systems development and management, repair and recycling, expense management and financial controls, resource planning, analytics, cash flow management, training and education, and much more.

4. Development of transferrable skills - Whether you are just starting your career or have years of experience under your belt, you possess transferable skills that employers are looking for in the Supply Chain Sector.

Identifying them and knowing how to develop and articulate those skills is crucial to the success of your career development. Skills may include relationship and financial management, negotiation skills, time and project management, adaptability, strategic thinking, conflict resolution, problem solving and technology literacy.

5. High Pay - As these new opportunities are established and the role of supply chain and logistics becomes ever more vital, the demand and competition for top talent to serve as strategic leaders is likely to increase, resulting in competitive salaries, especially in roles in management and higher.

6. A Brilliant Future in Supply Chain - Technologies such as the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, Predictive Analytics, 3D Printing, Autonomous Vehicles and Drones all provide the foundational elements to make revolutionary changes in Supply Chain.

Straight Talking - David Doherty OAM I wonder what you are really thinking?

I don’t mean the stuff you put out to influence other people (to convince them you are in control and capable.)

I really want to know the truth you are keeping to yourself every day.

For example, being bullied or trolled etc in adolescence may indeed lead to a process of life long self-story telling that reinforces negative attitudes and damaging destructive self- image/ identity.

Can you let me know, or is just too difficult to be open and honest about important things in your life. If you told the truth and exposed the real you would you be embarrassed and unable to function effectively?

How is your real self-image at this time?

Seems to me most people engage in some form of game playing to “protect” their image and mental stability. Past events, mistakes or being victimised influence our behaviours to create an early self-image that persists and is very destructive.

I recently read a Ted Talk article about “Identity Foreclosure”. It had a deep impact on me. Of course I am not an expert in the field but my research revealed the following: “ Identity foreclosure is a stage of self-identity discovery in which an individual has an identity but hasn’t explored other options or ideas. Most common in younger people, in this stage the individual has just adopted the traits and qualities of friends and other influencers.

To progress beyond this stage a person must develop their own identity by questioning their traits and exploring other options”.

“Individuals with Identity Foreclosure are usually inflexible and defensive.

They have been found to be resistant to experimental attempts to raise their self-esteem.”

This thumbnail is not comprehensive enough to draw a complete picture ,but is useful in bringing attention to the issue of self-esteem as a driver of behaviours.

Are you pretending to be something other than your true self? Can you cast off any semblance of your Identity Foreclosure history to create an attitude based on positive thinking that allows consideration of new behaviours to raise self-esteem?

Make no mistake we all harbour some thoughts/traits we have protected and kept secret. Our resultant behaviours leave us being less than our “best selves”.

It is time to face the future as better version of yourself. Help is at hand.

Talking openly and honestly with trusted other(s) is a great starting point. Professional help is also available but it is most productive when there is a commitment to make improvements.

In the work place Managers must be empathetic and always available to observe and discuss (no grandstanding or dictatorial attitudes) personal issues of employees. Employees should be courageous in bringing personal selfimage issues to attention/for honest discussion. People really are the key to organisational success. Developing the best version of every person is a goal to strive for.

Developing the best version of yourself (not the pretend version) is the key to a productive and satisfying life. Eliminate the destructive internal story-telling and historical negatives. Create a brand new you. Make a start today!

One of my favourite books, ”Management of the Absurd” has this

advice: “If you are not a Mentor go and be one. If you haven’t got a Mentor go and get one” The SCLAA Mentor Program must be supported and nurtured.

The world we live in is fragile. Violent wind and rain storms in Victoria last week caused havoc. My electricity, mobile phones, internet, heating and cooking, etc were out of action for two days. Our very comfortable life was disrupted although we endured ok. Lessons learned years ago, from my now departed Mother, came into use. People of my Mothers era had a stoicism and a can do attitude that got them through much tougher times than we face. Good lesson in dealing with lockdowns and such. Lets just get on with it, with a genuine community spirit.

By the way our electricity was reconnected at 1.30 AM. The crews working in horrid and dangerous conditions throughout the night are deserving of great credit. I am very appreciative of their heroic and skilled work.

Same applies to Supply Chains. Supply Chains can be very fragile. Every participant needs to share in the challenges and the value generated.

Real Collaboration at every point in the Chain(s) is a fundamental requirement.

I’m a leading expert in Procurement, Project Management and Supply Chain, bilingual with a Science Master’s Degree in Materials and Logistics and 16 years of proven experience in Medical, Electronic and Aerospace global manufacturing companies. Recognised performance of excellence and contributions to success in creating Cost Savings Projects by negotiations and implementation of strategies for global supply chain activities, including procurement, manufacturing, and distribution. I’m a Senior. Supply Chain Manager Consultant in Lucira Health Inc. a Public company located in San Francisco CA, USA. I oversaw the short- and long-term strategies to develop their Supply Chain, since tendering, supplier’s selection, contracting, negotiations, and contract manufacturing.

SCLAA Excellence Award

The University of Sydney’s Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS) celebrated its 30th birthday on Saturday, 15 May. Although impacted by COVID restrictions, 130 friends and guests came together in the stately confines of the University of Sydney’s Holme Building Refectory to mark the gala event. Over three magnificent hours, ITLS reflected on its many achievements over 30 years, and acknowledged the outstanding contributions of its academics and students.

Post-dinner was the presentation of awards where outstanding students were recognised for their exceptional academic achievements. On behalf of SCLAA, Prof Ben Fahimnia presented the SCLAA Excellence Award to Ms Qiaoyan Yu for obtaining the highest academic achievement in the Master of Logistics and Supply Chain Management. SCLAA has sponsored this generous annual award since 2017.

As reflecting on incredibly successful three decades of operation, ITLS looks forward to the coming years in which ITLS will continue to be an exemplar of thought leadership in transport, logistics and supply chain management.

ITLS values the contributions of SCLAA to its outstanding achievements and will continue its collaboration with SCLAA in the years to come.

The SCLAA continues to support and encourage excellence in Supply Chain and Logistics with the 2021 Australian Supply Chain & Logistics Awards Call for Submissions now open. WA Division

Brian Lynn - WA State President In these uncertain times for planning face to face activities, in addition to the association’s ongoing program of lively webinars, in the last two months SCLAA WA has squeezed in a couple of well attended in-person events.

May 12th saw a visit to ARB’s new West Australian Distribution Centre, where host Alister Milligan, State Operations Manager provided a fascinating insight into establishing a new DC in COVID times, and trading in a market where there has been a massive uplift on the market for 4WD accessories caused by the recent surge in disposable income coupled with the necessity to holiday in Australia. As well as a compact warehousing operation capable of handling a wide range of shapes and sizes of parts, the production area where bull bars and canopies are assembled and painted was of particular interest. All-in-all a great insight into the effective operation of a state DC for a small to medium sized organisation.

In mid-June the SCLAA launched its mentorship program nationwide. In WA this was celebrated with a physical

event at the Camfield. A small group of mentors, mentees and local SCLAA members gathered for a face-to-face introduction, discussion of the current market and what participants hoped to learn from their involvement. It was a lively and productive discussion and hopefully a sign of an excellent six months of personal development for mentors and mentees.

Lockdown permitting, more physical events are in the pipeline, including October’s annual Peter Smith Memorial Golf Day. A great annual event for both participants and sponsors to show off their competitive nature, showcase their organisations and develop their networks. Contact the SCLAA for more details of how to be more involved from a participation or sponsorship perspective.

Corporate Member News TMX appoints new Managing Director of Australia and New Zealand TMX, Asia-Pacific’s leading business transformation consultancy, is today announcing the appointment of Adam McDonald as Managing Director of its Australia and New Zealand operations.

Adam has been with TMX since 2015, where he established the business’ operations in New South Wales and Queensland and led the Project Services department.

SA/NT Division Brett McGowran - SA/NT State President The first half of 2021 for SA/NT region has been very rewarding for myself as the State’s President and for all our new members. We really pushed hard to identify new members early in the year, that would allow us to reestablish the organisation and bring the skills needed to form a great committee. Here we are six months on, and we are filling rooms at our events. We have a membership base covering broad industry groups, academic institutions and students, that continues to grow.

Why are people joining?

Because we are connecting people in new ways and providing insights and opportunities to our members, that they would otherwise not be able to access.

MARCH Event We visited Schneider Electric’s manufacturing and distribution centre, where we heard about their Supply Chain journey across the last eight years. A journey that has propelled them to be recognised as the most sustainable company on earth (as rated by both Corporate Knights and most recently by the Global Sustainable Supply Chain Summit). They are also ranked #4 Globally by Gartner as the one of the best Supply Chain organisations on earth.

For those that missed it, in a nutshell this organisation’s journey has involved: • 2005 – 2008 focus on Lean Manufacturing through “SPS” Schneider Production Systems.

• 2009 – 2011 continued Lean and Six Sigma initiatives with a focus on Simplification • 2012 – 2014 launched Tailored Supply Chain initiative, aligning supply chains to customer buying behaviours • 2015 – 2017 extended the Tailored Supply Chain journey with a focus on digitisation • 2018 – 2020 moved to adopt rapid and widespread focus on Industry 4.0, Sustainability and Connectivity

• 2021 they launched STRIVE – Sustainable, Trusted, Resilient, Intelligent with Velocity and Efficiency.

Each stage building on the achievements of the previous mission.

JUNE Event The association visited the Coca-Cola distribution and water bottling facility in Adelaide. It was a wonderful tour where we filled the place with 45 people! They provided us with amazing hospitality and a deep insight into their different business units. Thank you to Craig Smithson and team for all your efforts on the day.

We were able to see how Coke juggle about 900 SKU’s to service the SA and NT markets. They operate across Pacific delivering approximately 16 Billion litres of drinks annually!!

The business is committed to be carbon zero by 2040 globally and have embarked on a journey to implement the technology and initiatives needed to reach this.

They use state of the art Jungheingrich rechargeable forklifts to move things around and are in the process of upgrading WMS and ERP systems in line with their other technology initiatives. They shared their recently upgraded Vending Machine and Servicing business, where their technology is evolving fast. They already have a range of fully “end-of-life” recyclable fridges they call carbon neutral. These are “smart” and connected. They can be managed via an App, where the user can control the function of the fridge and download operating statistics, such as door opening, closing times, open duration, time of access etc. Soon the fridges will allow for real-time stock monitoring, allowing the business to move towards auto-replenishment and more efficient stock delivery.

Around packaging sustainability, they are making changes too. With major research currently underway that will allow them to move back into containers that are not reliant on plastic – watch this space.

Q3 Site Tour We will visit the new Metcash Distribution Centre, a brand new $67 Million build with lots of great technology, especially around Safety and wonderful workplace of the future initiatives. We will have guest speakers to share an overview of the Metcash business, another speaker who specialises in Behaviour Based Safety and then a round table discussion with questions and answers on the idea of building anti-fragile supply chains.

Places are limited, so get your registrations in fast, as we expect to sell out quickly.

Q3 Networking Then we have some exciting networking events to come in the last half of 2021. Starting with a Gin Tasting evening at the Howling Owl in Adelaide on the 12th July. Registrations are already open, so visit the SCLAA website and get along

to meet plenty of wonderful people playing in the Supply Chain space. There will also be a short presentation on Digital Safety at this event.

The Thought Leadership Workshop featuring Ishan Galapathy, following the recent release and Amazon no.1 spot of his book – Advance – will be going ahead in the city on the 15th July. Tickets still available for this handson, business efficiency workshop where you can take reallife examples from your own company and apply Ishan’s techniques to improve efficiency when you get back to the office.

Our NSW WISCL High Tea has been postponed to the 6th August and we are still expecting our very special guest, Alison Cusack to attend in person. Three reasons why rugged mobile tablets should be on every warehouse manager’s shopping list.

When warehouse managers choose to give their workers consumer devices, they are giving them technology that is meant for talking, texting, and playing—not professional use. When designing consumer devices, manufacturers aren't considering what it takes to be effective and efficient in the warehouse, such as uninterrupted wireless connectivity, integrated barcode scanning capabilities, IT system interoperability and enterprise-level security, not to mention a suitable level of durability.

Manufacturers are not prioritising input/output (I/O) either, which means they may have to ’make do’ with just one USB port, if available. Many consumer device manufacturers are removing I/O ports as fast as enterprise-grade rugged device manufacturers are adding them. Even audio jacks that were once popular are no longer a standard feature on many smartphones and tablets!

With technology advancing at such a rapid pace, warehouse and logistics managers cannot afford to compromise on technology investments when it comes to mobility.

Actionable intelligence is shared with a warehouse’s front-line workers via mobile devices, so that they can confidently take the “best next action” to keep customers happy, prevent losses and protect revenue. It is important that warehouse managers first stop to consider the many ways they are “normalising the risks,” on consumer devices particularly as they relate to these three things:

has an expected life of three years or less – yes, even those marketed as ‘rugged’ – there’s a very good chance that they could be rendered useless much sooner if they can’t handle drops, last for long periods of time without charging or scan barcodes effectively.

3. Increased security and easy IT management are not inherent in consumer devices.

Data protection is extremely important to businesses. A good, rugged mobility solution will provide managed access and data encryption, at a minimum, to ensure that personal and private data stays safe.

While it is possible to put a rugged case on a consumer-grade mobile device, there is no security ‘case’ or mobile device management solution that will provide the same level of visibility and control needed to protect an organisations’ operational intelligence and, just as important, its customers’ personal data.

Warehouse managers can take advantage of the many different security tools offered with enterprise-grade rugged devices – tools that aren’t available for consumer devices.

1. Enterprise-grade rugged mobile devices have longer life cycles.

Overall, rugged tablets and other mobile devices offer warehouse and logistics managers far greater value than consumer devices.

Manufacturers of consumer devices have a business based on planned obsolescence. In fact, they typically release a new model every year to continue generating profits.

This means that warehouse managers are not investing in technology that is built to last.

Rugged devices do not follow a cyclical schedule for new products. They only hit the market when there are significant upgrades and advancements that prove critical to your business, and many rugged device manufacturers will push out functional and security upgrades for remote configurability throughout the devices’ entire lifecycle.

2. Warehouse work is rigorous Part of the reason why consumer smartphones and tablets struggle to perform in warehouse environments is because they are physically built with longevity in mind.

There is a big difference in mobile technology that was made to be used for personal use and that which is purpose built to keep you productive on your feet without missing a beat. Besides the fact that a typical consumer device only

For many, July is the start of the new financial year. Some businesses are finding the state of the economy a challenge, as they struggle to maintain sales and keep costs under control in an ongoing COVID world. The good news is that looking at the latest Queensland state budget, there is growth occurring in the state in all sectors and with this comes opportunities. I would suggest now is the right time to review your supply chain and look into continuous improvement opportunities, if you have not yet done so.

Why not harness and empower your staff now, to review and look for those opportunities. This will ensure you and your business are best placed to capitalise on future growth opportunities. In the next coming months we will have opportunities through networking and Logistics Lounges to explore these opportunities. Our recent Logistics Lounge with Brad Jeavons on Lean and Six Sigma techniques was a perfect introduction to applying continuous improvement to your organisation. So keep an eye out for future SCLAA events that will help improve your business.

With July now upon us and reflecting on the last twelve months, the SCLAA in Queensland has grown membership, increased the variety and number of events, and we have had record numbers register for our upcoming EB Games site visit on the 15 July 2021, all of this in a challenging environment. This success is from our ongoing support from our National partners, you as members, and our

Queensland committee, so thank you and let’s keep growing our network.

On that note, we are continuing to provide monthly networking events along with this, the committee is planning for a future site visit and Logistics Lounge to be held in September. I am also excited to announce that planning is well underway to hold a Virtual Queensland Supply Chain Conference on the 14 October 2021. We will be looking to release the program and further details in July, but this will be one of our key events for the year.

These are the type of events that continue to make SCLAA the leading professional association in the logistics and supply chain industry in Australia, so please encourage your colleagues and peers to join along with the many benefits of membership.

This purpose built facility supports the national operations of Australia’s largest specialty retailer of computer games and pop culture related merchandise. With 2 main warehouse operations, firstly view the refurbishment process of all traded 2nd hand gaming machines and related product. Then examine the distribution of full case, split case and cross dock operations to support the replenishment of a network of almost 400 stores nationally.

And what you do simply proves what you believe.’’ Simon Sinek – Despite of all the pandemic disruptions which is throwing various challenges specially here in Victoria, it has been a rewarding first half year for SCLAA VIC/TAS as we managed to host several high-quality events with a hybrid approach. Incredibly proud of the committee on what we have achieved so far this year with membership base growing and lot of exciting things planned for the second half of this year.
