60th ASCL Awards Finalists The SCLAA is pleased to congratulate the below finalists (in no particular order): Automation, Robotics or Emerging Technology Finalists DHL Supply Chain - Kent Rogers & Karl Brooks Nomination from Alteryx A brainchild of Kent Rogers and Karl Brooks from DHL Supply Chain Australia, the Meerkat Inventory Robot is a revolutionary robotics platform that digitalises the process of maintaining warehouse inventory accuracy. The patented technology features a location scanning solution comprised of an autonomous robot with an air-powered telescopic mast and a payload of scanners and cameras. The Meerkat Inventory Robots can scan and interpret a wide
range of label and barcode types, do not require the racking to be a uniform height or width, and has had enough power to run for
more than 20 hours between charges, and will return to base for autonomous re-charging once its task is complete. The Meerkat Inventory Robots — a product of DHL’s Startup Lab, the company’s internal corporate incubation program for logisticsrelated innovations — will be rolled out in the middle of 2021.

“I have always wanted to automate the mundane task of inventory checking. Having run operations for many years, I am painfully aware of the issue created when pallet location accuracy was poor.” Kent Rogers.
Packsize Pty Ltd
IKEA is meeting its sustainable packaging goals through a partnership with on-demand packaging innovator, and fellow sustainability champion, Packsize Australia. The IKEA philosophy is based on great quality furniture at an affordable price, and one of the main principals behind that philosophy is ‘transportation without air’. IKEA advocates for packaging optimisation, from the perspective of operational efficiencies, but also to meet its sustainability goals and deliver an optimum customer experience. By joining forces with Packsize, IKEA sought to minimise the different material fractions and qualities, along with optimising production flow, while always keeping in mind the full journey of its products to customers’ homes, protecting the product, supporting values around sustainability, and inspiring and informing them.
...........................
The implementation of the Packsize On Demand Packaging® System has enabled IKEA to optimise its packaging operation by reducing the cost and improving the quality of packaging, reducing waste and product damage, and tripling warehouse efficiency, and is only one small step away from providing customers with 100% recyclable and compostable packaging.

Kilcoy Pastoral Company Dematic nominated Kilcoy Pastoral Company Limited (KPC) for the ASCL Automation, Robotics or Emerging Technology Award for its implementation of the Chilled Dematic Multishuttle System (DMS), installed at its manufacturing plant in Kilcoy, Queensland. Serving as an innovative and revolutionary automated technology solution to streamline supply chain, logistics and materials handling operations at the Kilcoy facility, the new ‘Active Chill’ function of Dematic’s Chilled Multititle System offers advanced capabilities to accommodate the meat industry.
Big Data, IT and Business Intelligence Finalists Fuzzy LogX Officeworks signed off on the implementation of a new DC in Melbourne which included an AMR GTP system. To ensure that the system being implemented met the expectations of Officeworks it enlisted the help of Fuzzy LogX to create a simulation model to verify the end-to-end system, identify possible bottlenecks and highlight areas of opportunity. This led to the creation of a 3D simulation model using the Emulate3D engine and Glenvern Group as partner. The simulation model was used to establish a baseline and run various scenarios to test the system design. It successfully verified that the GTP system was fit for purpose and identified certain changes that would reduce the likelihood of bottlenecks occurring and increased productivity in downstream activities.
...........................
The simulation also allowed all stakeholder to visualise what the system would look like before it was implemented. This additional benefit of using a 3D simulation model which was built to scale allowed the stakeholder to understand the space utilisation and traffic congestion in the area much better.

Polymathian Transporting product from farm to port is the largest cost to the Australian agricultural industry, which means that supply chain efficiencies are paramount. The customer is a major bulk logistics rail operator serving the New South Wales and Victorian agricultural supply chain. The supply chain is extremely complex, consisting of 150+ regional receival sites that transport grain to domestic terminals and 7 different ports spanning over 800 kilometres. Farm to port train journeys can range from 20-50 hours requiring multiple crews, and traversing multiple systems owned/operated by different corporations. The high volumes of traffic across the network creates many access constraints for the customer. In addition to limited track availability, many load and unload sites only allow access to rail services within narrow time windows. Rail plans must align to schedules accounting for all stakeholder constraints. Before engaging Polymathian, the customer’s spreadsheet-based planning system was time-consuming and inflexible. In a dynamic environment where network availability changes regularly, planning is often an iterative process. Rudimentary validation methods hindered the ability of planners to reschedule or evaluate other more efficient options. Often planners had no choice but to issue a “good enough” plan for the week to keep product moving across the network.
...........................
By reducing the planning time from days to minutes, the customer is now able to explore strategic scenarios to exploit further opportunities.
GHD Digital Nomination from Alteryx The Port of Melbourne (PoM) is Australia’s largest capital city container and general cargo port, handling more than one-third of the nation’s container trade. The Victorian Government requires PoM to conduct a study to capture full and empty container movements within the PoM catchment, for both imported and exported goods, in the annual Container Logistics Chain Study. Normally, visibility on the under-utilisation of containers, even a macro-level, would be considered a latent value. But due to the disruptions of COVID-19, the price of containers has reached historic heights, in some cases more than ten times their normal levels, leading to a significant mismatch between supply and demand. Therefore, to help government and industry get
a
clear and informed understanding of container logistics and the macro and micro trends across commodities, destinations and modes of transport, PoM commissioned GHD to undertake Australia’s largest, most comprehensive and arguably one of the most crucial supply chain surveys ever completed before. Using machine learning, GHD analysed over 100 million data records from 57 different data sources from PoM’s container logistics chain, including government, major importers and exporters, transport industry associations and more. This survey was a monumental task that had not been undertaken at this scale before and was done entirely virtual, with no ability to meet stakeholders face-to-face. However, with this technology, GHD could extrapolate the two-month sample across a whole year to get a complete and accurate picture of container movements in CY2019.
...........................
As a result, this survey is now a critical planning tool for all stakeholders connected to the PoM supply chain, providing PoM with reliable and actionable information to understand trends in the location of containers.

Adiona Tech
In just 10 months since launch to market, Adiona’s new delivery route planning and optimisation SaaS product has powered over 6 million global last-mile shipments, preventing the emission of almost 300 tonnes of CO2 equivalent versus traditional technologies. This is enabling customers in a range of sectors from parcels, furniture, retail, and FMCG to create innovative sustainable business models leveraging EVs, e-bikes, and cargo bikes in addition to traditional vehicles. Adiona was the winner of a $250,000 COVID-19 Resilience Grant from the NSW Government in 2021 for its service that automates and optimises large numbers of deliveries to create more efficient fleets using advanced machine learning. Adiona CEO Richard Savoie said, “Machine learning and artificial intelligence allow for shippers and carriers to be connected in new, automated, efficient ways that haven’t previously been possible. Doing this, we can dramatically increase vehicle utilisation and margins, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and create a more resilient supply chain to the benefit of the Australian economy and society.” Built as a software service that integrates with a wide variety of TMS, ERP, and other delivery management platforms, this enterprise grade solution has a unique ability to scale its impact quickly with minimal disruption to operations and fleets, as evidenced in public testimonials from customers including Coca-Cola Amatil, King Living Furniture, and Home Delivery Services Australia (see attachments).
...........................
With growth rates on track to hit 100 million deliveries by the end of 2022, Adiona is making a significant contribution to decarbonising the last mile delivery sector, which accounts for a significant portion of greenhouse gas emissions.

International Supply Chain Award Finalists IFC
IFC recently developed the innovative Direct-to-Store model for Australia’s largest independent professional tools retailer, Total Tools. IFC recognised that the traditional method of shipping full containers from a single vendor for store processing via a national based warehouse and distribution model was inefficient, with respect to delivery time, costs, and environmental impact. The new model has instead revealed an increase in the overall efficiency of product delivery for the brand. As providers of an end-to-end supply chain solution to Total Tools, IFC has assisted Total Tools in achieving significantly improved operations in the highly volatile global logistics market. The model permits a large volume of stock to be held in offshore consolidation distribution centres as fulfilment work is allowed to continue as an essential service while manufacturing is not. The efficient process enabled direct containers to be shipped to Australian states that were best placed to process orders quickly, with routes monitored regularly to avoid locked-down local areas. The model has proved particularly effective as a proactive response to Covid19 as high-turnover businesses require stock on hand to avoid sales loss in the event of an industry shut-down. Throughout the 2020 period, Total Tools saw increased inefficiencies across their operations due to implementing the Direct-to-Store model. Notably, improved production management and quality assurance compliance, alongside increased container utilisation and speed to market, all of which ultimately resulted in a 25% reduction in logistic costs among improvement across all the brand’s

performance benchmarks, demonstrating the total success of the solution .

At the end of the course, all students are challenged to apply their new skills and knowledge to solve a real-world industry problem, as part of a 12-week project. Projects are provided by our network of industry partners, and students work under the guidance on an industry mentor. As well as technical skills, our course also equips students with the necessary problem solving, teamwork and communication skills, to lead the supply chain teams of today and tomorrow. The MSCI also provides a supportive environment for female students. Almost half of the current MSCI students are women, who are strongly encouraged to learn, grow and develop in a profession widely recognised as having under-representation from females. Overall, the objective of the MSCI is to future-proof the Australian supply chain workforce with a better understanding of modern digital technologies, and an innovative mindset. It aims to upskill the industry whilst making our graduates more employable than ever before.

FEB ‘22 GPC Asia Pacific The Logistics and Supply chain function within GPC Asia Pacific is busy and expanding. As part of our strategic plan, we also have a large body of project and expansion work across both Australia and New Zealand (including technology and capacity improvements, and new Distribution Centres planned across both countries). We identified a need for specific development opportunities for our central Logistics and Supply Chain teams. In consultation with the Logistics and Supply Chain Leadership Team, we identified that the Distribution Centre team had two distinct skills gaps. The Logistics Uni program is a Leadership Development Program designed to enhance the Logistics and Supply chain team’s leadership potential. There are 2 levels within the Logistics Uni: ADVANCED (Diploma level) and FOUNDATIONS (Certificate IV level). The program runs once per year for each group. The goals of the Logistics Uni programs are to: • Develop team members into effective team leaders, so that they may be more effective leaders in both work and in life. • Improve self-awareness and self-reflection • Enhance and expand on current skills and knowledge • Encourage leaders to take ownership for their own learning There is a nomination and interview process, to ensure participants can dedicate themselves appropriately to the program,

and have appropriate level of skills and knowledge to begin. Those applicants not selected are provided with a development plan to ready them for future programs. The program is now in it’s third year (2020 had some delays due to COVID-19, and is finishing off this year). This application focuses on the inaugural program (2019).

Why now is the time to introduce wearables in your warehouse With supply chain disruption at an all time high and labour in very short supply, your warehouse staff should have all the tools they need to work as productively and comfortably as possible. Time is absolutely critical in a warehouse environment, and that has become even more important in times of significant disruption like the COVID-19 pandemic, where online orders are piling up and extensive delivery delays are occurring due to a short supply of labour. Given the round-the-clock nature of warehouse operations, it is extremely important that organisations choose the right tools for each worker and workflow. Trying to force-fit a general-purpose device into an application-specific environment can introduce unnecessary risk and lead to potential productivity declines, which can impact an organisation’s ability to keep the orders flowing. We know that handheld enterprise mobile computers can enable front-line workers to scan barcodes and complete tasks more efficiently. However, the continued growth of e-commerce coupled with the effects of COVID-19 restrictions is requiring workers to handle more goods, process more orders and count inventory faster than ever before, all the while dealing with staff shortages. Demand for a purpose-built wearable mobile computer that maximises productivity in hands-free workflows has never been greater.
As recently as 12 months ago, it was quite possible that only a few select workers required a wearable computer to do their jobs most effectively – perhaps those who were frequently picking up or breaking down pallets, or loading trailers and needed both hands to lift packages. Now, even workers picking goods in the front of the warehouse need a hands-free data capture solution if they are to zoom through the high volume of online orders received each day. Inventory put away is now an around-the-clock operation, as everyone rushes to restock shelves with essentials and luxuries alike to satisfy burgeoning demand. Even with team members putting forth increased effort, many organisations have reported to Zebra that they are still experiencing a decline in worker efficiency, order accuracy and customer satisfaction because of the unpredictability and overload of orders. Simply put: workers who have to carry devices in hand quickly become disadvantaged, and both customer satisfaction and sales suffer as a result. This is why wearables are now the go-to form factor for a multitude of supply chain use cases. They help to enhance workers’ capabilities, which in turn accelerates order fulfilment for customers.

FEB ‘22
Why now is the time to introduce wearables in your warehouse contin. In order for an organisation’s workers to stay at the top of their game and process as many orders as possible per shift (especially in high-pressure situations), they need a wearable that has: 1.
A physical keypad option for manual inputs in addition to a touch display that automatically adjusts its
sensitivity for bare and gloved hands. 2.
All-shift power and a hot swap battery that prevents loss of application data in the event of inadvertent
battery removal. 3.
An extreme temperature tolerance enabling the devices to remain operational whether it’s 30 degrees
Celsius or -30 degrees. 4.
Multiple communications ports for corded ring scanners and wired headsets, as well as other peripherals,
such as head-mounted displays and ring scanners. 5.
A host of accessory options that allow for the customisation and safe use of shared devices.
6.
A solution that boasts a long lifecycle so that you can minimise operational disruptions and maximise your
ROI. Giving your workers the right tools for the task at hand is the key to keeping the current supply chain disruption from crippling your operations.

Cultural Transformation Workwear Group (WWG) “You get to make this a better place to work”. These were the empowering words that echoed in the minds of a team that collectively shared a vision - to ‘make a better workplace for all’. What resulted over the span of 12 months, was a complete cultural transformation that changed the working lives of the entire team. From the shop floor, all the way up to the highest level of management, everyone got involved and worked together to achieve their vision. Safety incidents plummeted, employee morale reached an all-time high, productivity soared and Continuous Improvement initiatives increased by at least 100%. It was a success story by all accounts, but more importantly, a lesson in sound leadership and outstanding teamwork.
their organisation began.
WWG is Australia’s largest workwear provider, with an
Vative knew that there were multiple ways to achieve
extensive track record of delivering workwear garments to some of Australia’s best-known companies. They believe strongly that pride in what people do, starts with what they wear. WWG began their humble operation by supplying the Australian contingent with garments during WWII. Since then, they’ve grown to serve over one million customers worldwide, shipping to over 30 countries. WWG now comes under the banner of ASX listed company Wesfarmers; one of Australia’s largest listed companies with a diverse, crossindustry portfolio. WWG’s stable of household name brands includes Hard Yakka, King Gee, NNT and Workwear Group Uniforms. In 2019, WWG identified an internal desire to improve productivity through automation. The idea was great, but had a common flaw that similar organizations face – if the process is flawed, automation only creates more flaws – and at a faster rate. WWG quickly realized this and realized they should consider applying Lean, first. They sent their Continuous Improvement Manager, Scott Simpson to attend one of Vative’s Lean Practitioner, three-day workshops. These workshops are focused on Lean philosophy and implementation. They educate leaders on how to practically implement Lean tools to achieve substantial and sustainable productivity gains. Scott saw the value in his training and upon completion, knew that Lean could solve a large portion of their issues at WWG, with measurable outcomes. He was certain that a Lean mindset was the key to driving a cultural transformation they had long yearned for. As a result, he invited the Vative team to visit their enormous 27,000 sqm

cultural transformation at WWG. After collaborative discussions, they came up with a solution that combined Lean and leadership coaching, as well as organisation-wide, Lean training. As a result, an appropriate training package was selected to meet the needs of each department. For example, all shop-floor staff were assigned to complete a four-module, online course through the Vative Academy platform, that focused on the basic principles of Lean and 5S, whilst supervisors and managers were to receive Lean Practitioner and/or Lean Six Sigma training. Training on a Lean Six Sigma level, also incorporates Six Sigma into Lean, which provides further process improvement tools and techniques, that enable a deeper level of analysis. With any form of Lean training, individuals are generally required to complete a Continuous Improvement project as part of their course. This not only benefits them through upskilling, but also benefits the team and the organisation. The leadership team at WWG were excited, they were all aligned and ready for change. However, as all good leaders know, it doesn’t just take a handful of decisions in a boardroom to initiate positive change, it takes an entire organisation and leaders need to lead by example. As Adam Brown, Operations Manager at WWG put it “Lean is not a one-person journey, you need 100% buy-in from the topdown. If we don’t experience it, understand it and believe it, we’re not going to convince our people”. As a result, Adam organised a meeting on the shop floor, which included everyone in the organisation and presented this initiative for change. He ended the meeting with a compelling message

Meetings around these boards also created an open forum for team members to discuss and raise issues, without fear of repercussions. When a significant issue was raised, a Root Cause Analysis exercise was conducted to find out ‘why’ it happened, ensuring that the team, collectively ‘goes hard on the process and not the people, as people were always respected’.
