Welcome our NEW - SCLAA National Chairwoman - Amanda O'Brien Amanda O'Brien is the new Chairwoman of the SCLAA. Amanda O’Brien is a Transport & Logistics Professional and the CEO and Managing Director of Australian Worldwide Logistics Pty Ltd trading as Xtreme Freight with head office based in Melbourne.

Amanda’s particular expertise is in strategy and solving logistical challenges for Global Freight Forwarders and increasing efficiencies in the supply chain through strong partnerships and transparent analysis. Her belief is that developing people’s talents is fundamental to achieving great results and that flexibility and outside the box thinking is the greatest catalyst for change which is essential in keeping up with globalisation.

Past experience in diverse fields ranging from Telecommunications, Airlines and Retail holding both management and procurement roles has seen Amanda involved in projects that return investment to companies with people at the core. Changing the image, increasing the efficiencies and developing seamless logistical solutions for clients in the Transport & Logistics sector is fundamental to her philosophy.

Amanda joined the committee of the Victorian Division of the SCLAA in 2012 to contribute to the growth of female participation in the industry and believes that giving back to the community and awareness of social and political issues is cognisant with greater results.

I write this first Chairwoman’s report with great pride, after 56 years the Supply Chain & Logistics Association of Australia has given me the honour to travel into 2017 with the responsibility and challenge to change our horizons, increase our strategic leverage, change the ‘think tank’ of the current landscape and enhance what was already and is a great Association led by dynamic past Chairmen.

The strongest factor is what would be the consequence of not accepting this responsibility and what will that mean for other women who have the desire to rise to accept the challenge of responsibility in a changing market-place. So it is with this statement that I begin another journey with you into unchartered territory and it is with great determination that I will charter these unknown waters to carry the mantle and no doubt be judged continually along the way which is half the test and gratefully welcomed.

There currently is a 56% gender pay gap across all industries and it goes without saying that 2016 has brought with it a challenging economic environment that is ominous and ever present in the Global Supply Chain. The impact of globalisation, our shrinking manufacturing sector, increased technology and regulation for the industry have seen business of all sizes continue to strive for continuous improvement with dwindling margins and highly competitive and volatile environments.

In today’s economy trying to offer clients good ROI with increased regulation and compliance has never been more complex and with these changes companies need to be more versatile, innovative and commercially astute than in any other period ever before.

With economic conditions changing the industry has never been seen to be trendy or in vogue, but the supply chain offers a dynamic global platform for innovative and creative entrepreneurial minds to change the processes and fundamental intricacies of the complexities of the supply chain. Technology moves rapidly and as buyer behaviours change to a more centric online model this will continue to challenge the way we view what has become a very transactional society and push us to re-think the speed of ever present change and one that continually threatens our monetary stability. In total, during 2015 core transportation revenue worldwide will be projected at $4.6 trillion. This includes air, rail, water, pipeline, courier and warehousing segments. At about 6% of global economic activity (GDP) transportation’s core sectors add to an industry that is growing by TEU (19.6%) up in 2016 and an estimated 6,364,000 TEU (19.1%) up in 2017.

Transportation continues to evolve, no matter what the type of transport involved is on the road, on the sea or in the air.

Business and technology trends have driven immense changes in the transportation sector over the past three decades. The information age; with its introduction of sophisticated databases that can track inventory levels and shipments on a global basis via the Internet, has created vast transport and logistics efficiencies.

As a result, supply chain technology has been one of the fastestgrowing segments in the information field.

Mobile applications are also bringing transportation request and management directly to our smart-phones. For example, Uberisation of the industry famously enables individual passengers in many nations around the world to request transportation, tailored to their specific needs, to be delivered rapidly. This business model is spilling over into services for local truck service and less-than-truckload (LTL) long distance services.

The rapid adoption of outsourcing has led many companies, when shipping is vital to their businesses, to turn to logistics services providers for all manner of shipping support, including warehousing, scheduling and distribution services. (These services are sometimes described broadly as “3PL” for Third Party Logistics.) The sectors of transport, supply chain management and logistics services are permanently intertwined, creating efficiencies once undreamed of in the transportation arena.

All nations worldwide face a daunting task in maintaining airports, seaports, highways and railroads that can handle commerce and passenger traffic efficiently. The amount of government funds available for roadway development is never enough to keep up with long-term needs. One of the biggest challenges facing the global transportation sector over the mid- to long-term is a focus on lowering carbon emissions and enhancing energy efficiency.

Airlines have placed immense orders for fuel-efficient jets like Boeing’s new 787, which promises fuel efficiency gains of 15% to 20% per passenger mile, as well as engines that are quieter and burn fuel in a cleaner manner. Container ship operators are under intense pressure to reduce contamination and emissions while in port and at sea, and the latest designs, such as Maersk’s massive new Triple-E class of ships, are making huge strides in this regard. Automobile and truck manufacturers are struggling to respond to demand for fuel-efficient vehicles.

Tremendous strides in green technology are also being made throughout the transportation services and transport equipment sectors. Lee Schipper, a Senior Engineer at the Precourt Energy Efficiency Center at Stanford University, pointed out that air

transportation in developed countries today uses 50% to 60% less energy per passenger-kilometer travelled than it did in the early 1970s, while trucking uses 10% to 25% less fuel per tonkilometer.

Governments continue to outsource their transportation infrastructure to private operators as Governments are short of cash. They are selling or leasing toll bridges, ports and highways to private operators/conglomerates reaping cash windfalls in the process which hopefully will be used to expand and develop our much needed infrastructure (transport).

As consumers take more responsibility for their purchase decisions and factor in ethical supply chains, companies that satisfy this need will stand out from their competitors. This may be one of the more slow-burn supply chain trends, but socially responsible, environmentally friendly and legally compliant operations will continue to win market share.

So with this we enter 2017 with great confidence, in preparation for the ever changing dynamics in the supply chain and logistics sector. It is in this new role that I will dedicate myself to work with our valued National Partners and our valued members.

Supply chain complexity and too many KPIs are key challenges A new survey of 500 global logistics professionals reveals agreement on the need to reduce supply chain complexities, fine tune key performance indicators (KPIs) and offer a consistent customer experience across all channels.

Respondents from the UK, US, Australia, Benelux and Nordics participated in the research study, commissioned by Iptor Supply Chain Systems.

With 62% of those surveyed stating they now have a B2B2C fulfillment pattern, customer experience and visibility is more important than ever. To improve the customer experience, 61% of respondents said they are being more consistent in the experience across channels, and 56% of organizations are allowing people to access systems through more devices.

Visibility and traceability of products were cited as among the top five greatest challenges for an organization’s supply chain.

Fine-tuning the KPI structure also appears high on the agenda for many organizations, with 41% of respondents believing there are too many KPIs to manage effectively. However, of the KPIs that are being managed effectively, 85% said that they have some correlation or a strong correlation to the overall business performance.

Other key findings include: •

71% of organizations say that their B2B2C fulfillment pattern is growing.

•

The greatest challenges organizations have with their supply chain are its complexity (41%), the balance between being cost-efficient and sustainable (38%), and the traceability of products (36%).

•

Almost half (45%) of organizations struggle to handle reverse logistics returns.

•

All organizations identified gaps in the visibility when tracing products, the most common being what suppliers are delivering (28%), when suppliers are delivering (23%) and returns logistics (17%).

•

The most popular KPIs used include customer on-timein-full (OTIF) (63%), supplier OTIF (56%), and quality of inbound/outbound products (55%). These are also considered to be the most valuable KPIs (54%, 45%, 45%, respectively).

•

More than half of respondents identified the top supply chain technology challenges as lack of system flexibility (65%), time/cost to train employees (60%), difficulty of integration with current systems (57%), and lack of scalability (57%).

“This data helps us gain a deeper understanding of the pain points of the industry, and underscores the importance of enabling organizations to recognize, plan for and efficiently manage the complex supply chain, to enjoy market growth without compromising efficiencies and profit,” said Jayne Archbold, CEO, Iptor Supply Chain Systems.

Sapio Research conducted the independent research study in October, surveying management and C-level logistics professionals in eight countries representing companies in a range of industries, each with 200 to 1,000-plus employees.

WINNERS ANNOUNCED FOR THE 2016 AUSTRALIAN SUPPLY CHAIN 2016 Information Technology and & LOGISTICS AWARDS Management Award The Supply Chain & Logistics Association of Australia, in conjunction with RAMCO, Dematic, Xtreme Freight, LMA, National Manufacturing Week and Adaptalift, announced the winners of the 2016 Australian Supply Chain & Logistics Awards on 23 November at Luna Park, Sydney.

Held annually for the last 56 years by the Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia (SCLAA), these awards allow a fantastic opportunity for people and companies that are involved in the supply chain industry to celebrate and be recognised for their particular contribution, success and hard work.

Information remains the most important requirement of any supply chain. Information technology is where the majority of supply chain improvements has been made. Nominees for this award will demonstrate where their use of existing or new technology has provided significant improvements to their management of information and/or their supply chain processes.

The trophy was first awarded in 1994 and is dedicated to the late Len Smith FAIMM. The joint winners of the 2016 Information Technology and Management Award were: Cloud Logistics Solutions and eStore Logistics (below) .

There are seven categories in these awards and each attracted a record number of high calibre nominations. Awards were formally judged with recipients announced on the night. The winners and high commendation receivers were:

This award recognises an organisation that can demonstrate significant achievement within a section or across their entire supply chain.

Nominees should be able to clearly state the design and achieved results of the project or process that was envisaged and then implemented.

The trophy was first awarded in 1984 and is dedicated to Doug Beattie.

2016 Logistics Management Award This is a new award and is awarded for one of the oldest disciplines of any supply chain and replaces the Storage and Materials Handling award.

Recipients may stem from nominees for any of the other SCLAA awards at the judges’ discretion, or from a direct application, where the demonstrated achievement, improvement or results have required a logistical approach to improvement or major change to their logistics management.

Identifying & Defining the Maturity Gap The difference between the target and current maturity level per capability identifies the maturity gap, detecting underperforming and over-performing capabilities. SCMAP helps a business to avoid wasting capability where not required.

Participants record key issues causing maturity gaps.

Assessing Maturity Gap Severity Participants assess the impact of each maturity gap on the business from strategic, operational and vulnerability perspectives, allowing the identification of the severity of the maturity gap on the business.

‘Close Maturity Gap’ Prioritisation & Urgency Timing ‘Close maturity gap’ prioritisation weighting is applied by considering the weighting of core supply chain capabilities and the maturity gap severity. Destructive disruption and disengagement are major issues confronting the world communities. It is easy to pontificate anonymously from behind closed doors but the reality is we all need to stand up and be counted in dealing with lawless behaviour. If you cannot be safe in your own home, then we are in danger of losing the battle.

Political correctness protects many perpetrators of violence. If people don’t want to accept the standards of our communities, they should be dealt with.

It is about personal and community responsibility. Simple as that!

Our human purpose should be to pursue activities and actions that allow communities to thrive. No bias, no pretense, no egos!

It should be the same in Supply chains.

Real partnerships and/or collaborations require an honest desire for collaborators to share in the additional value created from all Supply Chains. Do your Supply Chains have that inherent quality?

Supply Chain and Logistics success is about personal and collective responsibility. Simple as that!

Globalisation, and the explosion of digital technologies seems to have developed cultures that excuse unethical conduct provided the monetary profit is ok. Where do you stand on this? My suspicion is that many people think it is someone else’s problem and if we ignore it then it will disappear.

I was recently reminded of the need to “unlearn” things as we age. There is a limited capacity to keep adding things to our learning memory so we must eliminate or “declutter” our brains. Seems logical to me. I suggest you give it a try. Eliminate the unnecessary wasteful storage in your personal memory.

I have been involved recently in interviewing applicants for a senior management position in Melbourne.

Two applicants from America made it very clear that they are frightened about the potential aftermath from the Donald Trump victory. If the “leaders of the free world” are concerned about disengagement and destructive disruption, then where is the rest of the world placed?

Having moved out of Melbourne into a rural area about sixty KMS from the CBD I now often must compete with the torrent of vehicles on the Hume Freeway. Many articulated trucks and a myriad of personal vehicles frequent this major roadway. It is clear to me that the road toll has very little to do with infrastructure or policing. Many drive vehicles without concern for the safety or other drivers. Trucks get a lot of criticism in the media but my observation is they are among the best of road users.

Tailgating, excess speeding, dangerous lane changing without indicating occur all the time. The answer to the road toll is personal responsibility and genuine

Australia is no longer protected by remoteness and geographical separation.

It is time for us to seek real statesmen and respected leaders to take up 12

positions in state and federal governments.

concern for other drivers. I would not be a truck driver on the Hume Freeway for all the tea in China. They risk their lives every day.

Road safety is about personal and community responsibility. Simple as that!

Genuine homelessness in our communities is a blight on our society. Australians are surely better than to tolerate such a stain on all of us. Drug and other addictions are also unmitigated disasters. I am sure that great increases in Police numbers and draconian laws will not stem the tide.

Families and communities must stand up and say enough is enough.

People and communities must take responsibility. Simple as that!

I am grateful to my long-departed parents for the sacrifices and their willingness to take absolute responsibility to guide me. I now recognize how tenacious and unselfish they were in giving me a shot at life. I never told them that while they were alive. Don’t miss the chance to express your gratitude to your parents.

Respect and responsibility for your parents is your responsibility. Simple as that!

The SCLAA created a milestone this week.

The Association elected for the first time a female to be Chairman. Amanda O’Brien took the reins. I wish her all the best and look forward to innovative and effective developments in 2017.

Western Australia

Division Report Brian Lynn President 2016 has certainly been a challenging year for the WA economy with the downturn in mining and its knock on effect on supporting organisations and consumer spending in general. Overlaid on this, the impact of Trump and Brexit have yet to play out. The effect of this turbulence (disruption in fashionable parlance!) was also felt by the SCLAA (WA) as it proved difficult to attract volunteers to the committee as they themselves were focussing on either sustaining their existing employment or on seeking new work.

Despite all of this, through the careful stewardship of State President Kym Parry, ably supported by a core of highly intelligent, experienced, enthusiastic and focussed committee members, the association was able to sustain its membership base while also staging a series of thought provoking and educational events. In recent months the annual Peter Smith Memorial Golf Day, the Freo Ports and Whipper Snapper Distillery visits and speaking events such as Bustle’s presentation at Curtin and SCSA’s breakfast presentation have all proved popular. Further proof of the continued relevance of the SCLAA in today’s market is evidenced by the number of organisations partnering with the association at a local or national level.

After two years of dedicated service to the SCLAA Kym has elected to hand over her Presidents reins. I (Brian Lynn) am the lucky recipient and will strive to build upon the successful platform for the association that has been laid in the state by Kym and

her illustrious predecessors. My background in Supply Chain and Logistics spans more than twenty years and three continents, and technology and operations. I’ve been in Australia for more than eleven years, and have been an SCLAA member for the vast majority. The opportunities to broaden my knowledge of logistics in the state, network with like-minded professionals and as a result on more than one occasion secure employment in the industry in WA have been invaluable. Somewhat intriguingly my current activities can be said to simultaneously span grocery, healthcare and automotive logistics and public transportation.

In the last committee meeting of 2016 as well as discussing a theme for the SCLAA (WA) in 2017 we outlined a series of potential site visits, breakfast events, sundowners and webinars, with specific focusses of the Future Leaders Group, Women and Logistics and opportunities for academic development of the state’s logisticians. The feasibility of reinstating the WA Supply Chain and Logistics Awards in cooperation with CILTA is also being investigated.

With an exciting 2017 in prospect it only remains for me to wish you all a Happy and Prosperous Christmas and New Year, thank you for your support (and sponsorship) in 2016 and look forward to meeting you again in 2017. (Why not make one of your new year’s resolutions to actively participate in you industry’s main association?)

ACT & Southern NSW

Division Report Gary Pearce President

The ACT/SNSW Division continues to gain momentum with three new members joining in October, another three in November, and two others pending. All but one of our current members also renewed their membership throughout the year, including our two existing corporate members, Canberra Airport and National Mailing & Marketing (and now joined by Toll Customised Solutions Canberra as our third corporate member).

We are particularly pleased with the ongoing support of the Canberra Airport, who this year commenced handling return international flights by Singapore Airlines from Singapore to Canberra through to Wellington New Zealand and return, introducing a new dimension to passenger and freight movements through the national capital. (pictured on the tarmac below).

There has been a noticeable increase in membership applications and enquiries from senior Defence personnel this year, which we believe will lead to an even greater participation rate from elsewhere across the three services in the year ahead.

What has also been pleasing is the rise in the level of interest from members seeking information and assistance in gaining

their CPL qualification. Our Vice President, Anthony Goninan, has taken on the role of “Education Officer” to provide the necessary mentoring and support of all members seeking their CPL. Our ACT/SNSW Division also had a significant representation at the recent ASCLA Awards night in Sydney, with three finalists (Anthony Goninan – Industry Excellence; National Mailing & Marketing – Training, Education and Development; and Toll Customised Solutions Canberra – Supply Chain Management). National Mailing & Marketing were awarded a High Commendation in their category (runners-up to the University of Sydney) - our congratulations go to them, and to all 35 finalists and 13 Award recipients.

This all bodes well for the future of the SCLAA in our region, and we can confidently look forward to a successful and rewarding 2017 for all participating members.

To our own Divisional members, and to all members of the SCLAA family throughout Australia, we would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very merry Christmas, and a happy, safe and prosperous new year.

Victoria / Tasmania

Division Report Yit Ming Ng As we reflect on 2016 we can see it has been a big year for the SCLAA Victoria, one filled with an increase in the number of events, improved variety and focusing on adding value to the members. The committee has strived to provide as many free events and I am proud to say we had achieved a total of 4 free events throughout the year.

In 2016 we have had site visits to DHL, Australian Post and Toyota Manufacturing plant. We also had Matrix 42, GS1 and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council as guest speakers at our logistics lounge events.

The SCLAA has always promoted diversity and equality and 2016 is no different. This year the inaugural Women in Logistics – The Final Frontier event was held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Victoria which aimed to promote a stronger working relationship between men and women.

The year 2016 is also a historic year as the SCLAA has elected our first National Chair Women (Amanda O’Brien) to head the SCLAA Board in 2017.

To close 2016 with a bang the annual Australia Supply Chain & Logistics Awards was held at Sydney’s Luna Park in November while the Victorian Christmas party was held at the iconic 163 year old Captain Melville pub located in the CBD. The SCLAA would like to extend a warm welcome to all who would like to get involved with the committee or host events in 2017.

SCLAA Victoria Christmas Party (1st December 2016) SCLAA Victoria held its yearly Christmas Party at the 163 year old iconic Captain Melville pub based in Melbourne’s CBD. The event took place on 1st December 2016 from 6.30pm and concluded at 10pm while some members continued way into the night. The crowd enjoyed a plethora of food including Captain Melville’s famous beef rib bun with chipotle coleslaw while enjoying free flow drinks. It was an enjoyable night to celebrate the achievements of 2016 while being able to network with other members. SCLAA Victoria would like to thank everyone for their support in 2016 and to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

In closing, I would like to thank the committee members, attendees, event sponsors, and National Partners as without the support from all parties it would be impossible to host successful events and promote the Supply Chain and Logistics Industry. Charles is a management consultant with GRA based in Melbourne and comes from an engineering and finance background.

He has experience in supply chain strategic review, sales and operations planning, inventory optimisation, 3D printing and demand and replenishment planning. His previous clients within the supply chain industry include the Defence Force, MROs and ASX listed retail businesses within Australia.

Networking Event Mark Skipper Fifty Seven Members are guests attended the networking breakfast at Luna Park on November 17 to attend the inaugural SCLAA AXIS Rehabilitation event. The broad range of industry representatives, from supply chain and logistics to construction, were all were eager to optimise their injury management processes and discover new strategies to prevent costly workers compensation claims for their organisation.

Axis Managing Partner, David Brentnall, opened the day and introduced the first of two keynote speakers, Carly Fisher from Virgin Australia.

Carly provided some remarkable insights into how Virgin Australia implemented a nation-wide Onsite Physiotherapy Service and achieved a substantial reduction in workers compensation premiums.

“Over the initial two year period,” said Carly, “we saw the number of claims reduce by 57%, as well as premiums decrease by 8 fold.”

Carly then went on to provide a compelling case study in which the streamlined access to physiotherapy assessment and open communication processes available through the Onsite Physiotherapy Service enabled an employee to avoid costly neck surgery; a great outcome for both the employee and the business.

Some great questions were raised by the audience including “What happen if an employee wishes to see an external provider?” and “What happens when an employee sustains a non-work related injury?”

David responded and advised that onsite physiotherapists also liaise and work with external providers to offer insight into the specific manual handling environment.

Onsite physiotherapists can supplement any external treatment with onsite functional capacity assessments, providing clarity on prognosis and helping to fast-track an employee’s return to full duties. Onsite physiotherapy can also tackle the issue of ‘non-work related injuries’ head-on. Treating such an injury early on ensures it does not become an aggravation at work and thereby leave the employer vulnerable.

Following Carly’s presentation, Doyle Myles from Hicksons Lawyers gave a comprehensive overview of early strategies and procedures than can ensure business owners safeguard themselves from litigation in the future.

The central theme around Doyle’s presentation was the importance of gathering evidence early on when an injury has occurred, and using the right systems or procedures to easily document and retrieve information in the future.

By following these steps employers are able to better communicate with insurers exactly what happened and ensure the compensation provided is an appropriate and fair amount. Doyle also emphasised that being proactive can help direct an early return to work for the employee.

Nerida Kelton - State President It is hard to believe that we are now nearing the end of 2016!

The SCLAA QLD Division has had a busy year with site visits, logistics lounges, a mentoring program, the SCL Awards program, the annual Supply Chain & Logistics Conference and of course our Foodbank Hamper project.

In total we have had 800 people attend our events in Queensland this year and we are already planning a great calendar for 2017! We are extremely proud that we are a supporting association for the annual Supply Chain & Logistics Conference each year; an event that has been running for 17 years and is run solely by volunteers across a broad range of associations.

Our annual Supply Chain & Logistics Awards have been running for close to ten years and we are one of the few states in Australia who runs their own awards program year-on-year.

Lastly the work we do with Foodbank is our proudest achievement and we have raised over $650,000 and packed over 5500 hampers over the last six years; again an industry project with many associations getting behind this initiative.

To the volunteer committee for Queensland – you are all amazing people who always put the betterment of the industry first.

I am proud to be a part of such an inspiring group of people who keep looking for new and exciting projects that can help you the Members. They are a credit to the Association! To you the Members if you have any ideas for site visits, events, or speakers please let us know as we are busy planning the 2017 calendar as we speak.

“A Morning with Emeritus Professor Martin Christopher, Cranfield University” Griffith Business School was delighted to be able to host a seminar by Martin Christopher, Emeritus Professor of Marketing and Logistics at Cranfield School of Management who presented to a large audience of practitioners from the Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia (SCLAA) other industry associations.

Drawing on his over 40 years in the logistics and supply chain field, Martin traced the development of the profession from its early years ‘physical distribution management’ (PDM) through to the current day. In doing so, he argued that the period since the turn of the millennium has seen a significant growth in business (and hence supply chain) complexity driven by advances in digitization, rapid manufacturing, advances robotics, the 'servitisation' of products and the growth of virtual supply chains.

This, in turn, has led to a greater requirement for structural flexibility and adaptive supply chains and, hence, the need for supply chain managers to be masters of complexity, risk managers, change agents and orchestrators. In particular, he noted that all of these skills and competencies are related to 'right-brain' attributes, and hence this is where we should be focusing our training and education.

Queensland Division Packs 1100 Hampers for those in need On Friday the 9th of December over 170 people from the SCLAA Queensland Division, the QLD Supply Chain and Logistics Conference (QSCLC), the AIP and the APPMA, spent their Christmas Party packing over 1100 hampers for Foodbank to provide to those in need during the holiday season.

The hampers included 800 family hampers, 200 ladies packs and 110 children’s packs. The total value of the hampers was over $120,000 worth of items that were either donated, or the funds raised for, by the industry.

The hampers would not be possible without the continued support from the industry including Campbells Arnotts, Colgate, Ego Pharmaceuticals, Edex, Tip Top GW Foods, All Purpose Transport, Office Max, BDO, APPMA, Orora, Linde Forklifts, Tip Top Foodservice -GW Foods, Coles and Department of Housing and Public Works.

Over the last five years, the team has packed 5400 hampers to the value of close to $660,000 for people in need and looks forward to even more hampers in 2017.
