Chairman’s report The SCLAA was pleased to announce the appointment of Anthony Trainor as SCLAA Executive Officer in July.

As the SCLAA continues to grow, it is important that we have an experienced Executive Officer who can promote the SCLAA to potential Members, National Partners and our industry. Additionally, to assist the SCLAA with Event Sponsorships, Major Event Planning, Events in our States / Divisions as well as other important strategic and marketing functions.

Anthony has extensive experience in similar roles with Western Health Foundation, Save the Children and various sporting Clubs, including the North Melbourne Football Club and Collingwood Football Club. He will report to the SCLAA Board and work with the Board as we refine and implement our strategic plan.

One large FMCG company gets over 2,000 forty foot mostly Asian containers into its Australian DC a year, so the quantum of the scale of potential threats to manage is considerable.

In 2014 South American Fire Ants were found near the container terminal at Port Botany in Sydney. The Fire Ant has a painful sting that impacts humans, pets and livestock. In South America they spend $7 billion a year to control them and there are around 80 deaths a year. Colonies of Fire Ants, have been found in tucked away areas inside shipping containers, which are not visible to the human eye. The Zika virus was initially contained to South America, now the Australian Government is warning Australian travelling to Indonesia about the Zika virus.

A mosquito could easily survive the transit from Indonesia to Australia in a container.

Agriculture is the future for the Australian economy and we need massive infrastructure projects that delivery more water to create more arable land.

Biosecurity or the lack thereof, is an obvious threat. The impact of pests and disease can be devastating to agriculture, communities, regions, the economy, our reputation and our national livelihood.

An increasing proportion of Australia’s fast moving consumer goods are imported so there is increasing emphasis on suppliers, their vendors, shipping operators, ports and the Australian Government to protect our biosecurity.

The Government has developed activities in key overseas risks areas that are focused on reducing risks through intelligence, surveillance, looking at shipping ballast tank issues and undertaking audits and verification processes.

At the borders, there are multi-modal programs to enhance compliance, develop new standards to address new threats and increased inspections of passengers, luggage and cargo.

What is the solution? Do we need to go back to the old days where planes were sprayed on arrival to Australian airports from certain overseas countries? Will all sea and air containers needs to go through some Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) process on arrival?

Perhaps a process where they x-ray containers looking for contraband, could also incorporate gassing the containers and killing any pests. What about carry-on baggage on planes, cruise ship luggage and cruise ships / ballast tanks not to mention container ship and their ballast tanks? Pests can also survive on the outside hull of ships.

The ABS valued Australia’s Primary Production sector at $54 billion for the financial year ended June 2015, so we have a lot to protect.

The only solution, which will protect Australia is to inspect and spray every sea and air container from risky origins or which have transited risky countries. Sure this will add cost and potentially short delays at ports, but the cost is insignificant when Australia’s current and future livelihood is at risk. Given the shortcuts taken by some sea and air carriers, we cannot rely on them to undertake this task. Australia and New Zealand are unique in that considerably diverse food can be grown, jobs created and wealth created, our respective Governments need to protect this vigorously.

Early in the 20th century they use to say Australia rode on the sheep’s back, well in the 21st century it is my prediction that agriculture will be our dominant industry with a competitive advantage, and we need to take steps to ensure we get more arable land, better transport and tight biosecurity.

The 56th Australian Supply Chain & Logistics Awards will be held at the Grand Ballroom at Luna Park in Sydney this year. The Awards night is Wednesday November 23 and the Ballroom will have the stunning back drop of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and City behind the presentation stage. With daylight saving at that time of the year, the setting sun will be an excellent backdrop to the pre Awards drinks.

The SCLAA Board has been working to increase the value we provide to Members and some exciting announcements will be made shortly.

We are all volunteers at the SCLAA and we would appreciate an injection of fresh ideas across the country, so please put your hand up to join your local State Division’s Committee. Great for your career exposure as well.

Women in Logistics SCLAA National Partner LSC Solutions Pty Ltd proudly supports Women In Logistics (WIL) – The Final Frontier as a Silver Sponsor and recently attended the WIL Melbourne event at the MCG on Friday, 29 April 2016. The WIL event in Melbourne was attended by over 200 people.

Some time back the respected Supply Chain Guru Dr John Gattorna wrote a book about his discovery of the Missing Link in Supply Chains. Amazingly he wrote advised that the missing link was “people”.

Of course Gattorna was right but his treatise demonstrated we have individually and collectively failed to address the most fundamental tenet of Supply Chain (or Value Chain) practice.

People are the key!

Fast forward now to 2016. Technologies, globalisation, government and business attitudes are continuing to dehumanise our strategies and processes. Social media, on line transactions and globalisation are contributing to the demise of human capital and interaction.

I am always incensed when a business announces it will cut hundreds of jobs as a strategy. My long experience tells me that the work must be eliminated before the people are sacrificed.

A strategy to just cut jobs often does not suggest any real effort to re-engineer the business. By the way I am sure you cannot cost cut your way to growth and success.

Banks seem to be headed towards branches where there is very limited possibility of interacting with a human staff member. My local bank branch is dubbed “express branch”. It is wall to wall machines.

Obviously the upcoming consumer population is adamant about their 6

desire for mobility and immediacy.

Nothing wrong with that!

However as in all things getting the balance right is the key success factor.

I recently had need to seek information and transact a change in details with an insurance company and a telecommunication provider. I attempted to do this via telephone.

After selecting from the endless array of options, in each case I discovered there was no menu option relating to my exact needs. So I chose the option to wait to speak with an operator. Of course “all the operators were busy on other calls”.

Twenty-minute wait in one case then connected to a person in an offshore Asian location. Issue not resolved!

Cost cutting via offshore outsourcing is usually not the best solution. Failure to invest in people to provide decent customer service is a flawed strategy.

Time for a groundswell in support of “onshoring” to provide local trained people to deliver cost effective, timely and effective solutions for customers.

Ultimately Supply Chains (Value Chains) are concerned with meeting the needs of the eventual customer/consumer.

To do this we seek to generate value, and eliminate waste along the chain from point of origin to point of use. All along the chain people are using their particular skills and experience to ensure there are seamless cost effective flows. Technologies and relationships enable Supply Chains to produce value for the participants.

The enabling relationships are initiated and propagated between people!

We must invest in professionals and practitioners in Supply Chains if we are to compete across the Globe.

Competent loyal people with appropriate attitudes will always afford a pathway to success. Loyalty is a crucial attribute. It is essential quality for both employer and employee. Trust and loyalty are key components of effective Supply Chains.

At the September 1st and 2nd Supply Chain Conference in Brisbane I will be co-presenting with Stephen Hanman.

We will be dealing with issues concerned with trust, ethics, lying and cheating, collaboration and such. We look forward to meeting with you at the Conference.

Hanman has published an excellent book titled “From Me to We”. It deals with the real world of value generating collaboration. I recommend the book to all Supply Chain Professionals and Practitioners.

I noticed this morning a sign outside our local Primary School. It said,

ACT/SNSW Division Representing the SCLAA ACT/SNSW Division I had the privilege to attend the Defence + Industry (D+I) Conference in Canberra on the 15 June 2016. The D+I Conference is a key event for Defence and Industry collaboration. This year's event brought together keynote speakers, decision-makers, equipment operators, project managers and prime and small to medium enterprises from across the Defence and Industry sector.

The theme of the D+I was Fundamental Input to Capability (FIC).

In Defence FIC is categorised as: 1. Personnel, 2. Organisation, 3.

Collective training,

4.

Major Systems,

5. Supplies, 6. Facilities, 7.

Support, and

8.

Command and Management

The FIC diagram (below provides an example of the relationship between the FICs and just some of the industry sectors that support them.

The purpose of the diagram is to demonstrate the breadth of the Defence industry in Australia. During the D+I it was proposed that Australia’s Defence industry be recognised by the Federal Government as the ninth FIC. This would assist in generating an understanding and acceptance that Defence industry is a critical partner to Defence’s capacity to deliver military capability for government.

With the recent release of the Defence White Paper, the Integrated Investment Program and the Defence Industry Policy Statement opens the door to an exciting and challenging new era for Defence and Industry.

The Government's clear intent to re-set and transform the Defence and Industry relationship, and to acknowledge industry as a fundamental input to capability, provides a clear blueprint for the conference.

The D+I program enabled keynote speakers/delegates (Government (Federal/Local), Military Chiefs, Defence APS Heads, and Industry Representatives/SME) to provide a brief outline then participated in a series of Q&A panels.

The focus was to have a series of concise and thought-provoking presentations with a premium on conference involvement (Q&A) with these speakers/ delegates.

A key conclusion, the Conference Chair Mr Kim Gillis (Deputy Secretary Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG)), assembled a number of executive representatives, some 35 persons, from Primes/SME/Defence/ CASG for a round table event the day before the D+I, with a number of topics to discuss.

• Exports Of these round table topics the one that has a direct interest for SCLAA members is ‘Building the Supply Chain’.

Although no specific detail was discussed during the D+I it was stressed that as a result of the Defence White Paper, a number of comprehensive Defence programs (new Submarines, Future Frigates, upgrades of current capability, etc), and the supply chain needs to be resilient, innovative and flexible.

Under the heading of doing business with Defence a Global Supply Chain (GSC) Program is important as it creates opportunities for Australian companies in the global supply chains of multinational Defence companies and their major suppliers.

The participating primes establish industry units within their companies and identify bid opportunities across their Defence and commercial business units.

These opportunities are then provided to capable Australian companies and are won on merit. More often than not, the bid opportunities are also

internationally competed, requiring the Australian business to be globally competitive. In addition to providing bid opportunities, the GSC primes advocate on behalf of Australian industry, train and mentor companies in the primes purchasing practices and methods, and provide a range of market assistance including facilitating visits and meetings with key decision makers.

Large Defence companies and small to medium enterprises employ those working on projects and these jobs are located all around Australia. SCLAA member organisations and National Partners have the opportunity to be involved in such projects.

On 26 April, the Australian Government selected DCNS as its preferred international partner for the design of 12 Future submarines for the Royal Australian Navy. DCNS Australia is a subsidiary of DCNS, a French naval shipbuilding company and European leader in Naval Defence. DCNS intends to attract and work with local Australian Defence Industry across the design, construction and sustainment phases of

all the future Australian naval programs, including submarines, frigates and offshore patrol vessels, which require supply chain support.

The Future Submarine Project is a major national undertaking and is of a scale, complexity and duration never before experienced in Australia. About 2,000 workers will be directly employed in the construction of the submarines, while two or three thousand more will be working in the industry supply chain to support the project. As illustrated (right), future jobs in Defence and Defence Industry will require comprehensive supply chain and logistic support, nation-wide.

• Thales It was highlighted that Defence and Defence Industry will employ large number of workers to build and deliver Defence’s current and future capability, and there are many more who work in the supply chain that provides materials, equipment and services to the projects.

Division Report Yit Ming Ng This week, SCLAA members received an exclusive behind the scenes tour of Australia Post’s Melbourne Parcel Facility, a highly automated DC which recently underwent a major overhaul extension and modernisation as part of a $2B network investment program in 2014.

The facility, now significantly larger than the playing surface of the MCG, is dominated by various conveyor belts and automated sorting machines intertwined in what might appear to an outsider as a chaotic web, but is a highly efficient system with over 25,000 parcels constantly whizzing by and changing lanes each hour, for up to 24hours a day.

The Netherlands produced system utilises moving scales, automated truck loading systems (not dissimilar in appearance to a horizontal cherry picker) and six-sided bar code scanners, backed up by off-site employees with

remote access into package reading cameras. This well-oiled machine has increased Australia Post’s Melbourne Parcel Facility throughput by almost three times.

Aside from efficiency, the focus of Australia Post on safety was prominent, with stringent PPE requirements, vehicle separation and overhead gantries in place, in addition to numerous automated shutdown sensors to eliminate the risk of any potential hazards to employees.

The event was an insightful experience providing a mixture of members the opportunity to meet and witness a black & white picture of the direction of future supply chains. If you missed out, we hope to see you at the next event!

injuries and paying staff overtime wages to cover. You can see this can spiral out of control quite quickly. In addition to the financial ramifications of absenteeism, there can be equally damaging effects on staff morale and company culture.

In an increasingly competitive global marketplace, cost-saving and productivity measures are a necessity. Such measures are usually aimed at finding efficiencies in the distribution of freight, managing inventory, or implementing new equipment and technology. But did you know On-site Physiotherapy has been proven to be another effective cost savings measure within the logistics industry?

Unnecessary absenteeism can result if workplace injuries are not managed properly. By seeking treatment from an On-site Physiotherapist early after an injury, workers can be provided with appropriate advice, treatment and exercises to allow them to recover quickly from their injury, whilst remaining at work. This will often reduce the need for further (more costly) medical interventions and investigations. An on-site Physiotherapist can also provide the workplace with feedback on suitable duties to ensure that the worker can safely remain at work whilst recovering from their injury. It offers businesses increased control and reduces the likelihood that an injury escalates to a claim. This can have a significant effect in reducing the costs of claims to business.

Absenteeism, rising workers compensation premiums and poor staff morale can clearly affect a business’ bottomline.

When injured at work, many workers go down the expensive route of unnecessary time off work due to delays in getting the right treatment.

If insurance companies are footing the bill for these external appointments, higher premiums will be passed onto your business.

Add to that, the more employees who have a claim, the higher the premiums you will pay. This premium is further increased if workers are unfit for duties and not in the workplace, as wages are a huge proportion of any workers compensation claim.

In addition to managing injuries, the Physiotherapist may be able to participate in other proactive strategies to help prevent and manage injuries in the workplace, such as conducting musculoskeletal risk assessments, critical job demands and health promotion activities.

Here is an example from one of Axis’ clients** that operates a warehouse. Following three and a half years with an On-site Physiotherapy service, the business had noted the following changes in some of the key measurements associated with workplace injury:

Division Report Gary Pearce President Since our last newsletter we have held 2 member meetings, both attracting improved attendance.

At our July meeting held at National Mailing and Marketing we were happy to welcome our two newest members - Meghann Walker (PWC) and Joshua Barbetti (Defence).

Being new to the Division we asked Meghann and Josh for their thoughts on reasons for joining the SCLAA and whether they had any suggestions on how best to attract new members.

The networking opportunities afforded by SCLAA membership are still high on the list of potential member priorities, as well as the opportunity to gain exposure to and an understanding of other business operations in the different areas of the logistics and supply chain industry.

The ACT & Southern NSW Division is continuing to focus on the development of new networking and training opportunities for our members.

We will be working to continue with site inspections and presentations by those businesses hosting the meetings, and further promote the CPL program), as well as giving consideration to holding functions and events that would be attractive to and supported by our local members.

It was also decided that while we will not be running our own local Territory Awards this year, we will be encouraging members and member organisations to nominate for the national ASCL Awards.

Division Report Kym Parry President On Thursday 16th June, sandwiched between work and early evening darkness a coach-load of WA supply chain practitioners roamed the various container facilities at Fremantle Port guided by an always enthusiastic host, Michael Pal, Senior Business Analyst Fremantle Ports. As the biggest gateway into Western Australia for ocean borne freight, the port plays a key role in the state’s economy. The substantial turnout from representatives of many of WA’s key employers on this visit was reflective of this importance.

Michael, who then continued to walk the audience through the congestion and efficiency benefits of the recently introduced electronic vehicle messaging system.

The extensive itinerary took in the rooftop of the Freo Ports building with its panoramic view of the overall port area, followed by a guided bus tour of the DP World Terminal, Qube Container Port, Rail Terminal and Truck Marshalling Area.

All in all, thanks are once again due to Michael and the Freo Ports team for another excellently organised and eye opening tour.

All Purpose Transport New Logistics Centre Site Visit: Wednesday 28 Sept.

SCLAA members will have the opportunity to tour Stage 1 of the new All Purpose Transport Logistics Centre; with another 2 stages currently being developed for future expansion.

The APT Logistics Centre footprint will total close to 18,000m2 of warehousing space along with 1000m2 of first class office space.

All Purpose Transport (APT) is a privately owned Queensland road freight company servicing south east and regional Queensland with depots at Berrinba, Loganlea and the Sunshine Coast.

Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the APT facilities including their operations; which encompasses their Transport Divisions of Couriers, Taxi trucks, Heavy Transport, New Furniture and Refrigeration.

Queensland Division Event Wrap Up Queensland Division has recently run a number of successful events including Hitachi Site Visit, DJR Team Penske site visit, the InLand Rail Logistics Lounge and the Incitec Pivot Limited site visit.

SCLAA - Hitachi Site Visit On the 7th of June, close to twenty SCLAA m e m b e r s and guests made the trip to Hitachi’s co n st r u c t i o n and mining equipment facility . Hitachi C o n st r u ct i o n Machinery (HCM) is part of the global Hitachi business and a leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, headquartered in Japan with over 20,000 staff globally. HCM market their products worldwide through a global network of company owned and independent dealers including most states in Australia.

After signing in and making our way to the conference room our host Andrew gave a short presentation about who HCM is and their operation at Wacol. The two main areas are the assembly of heavy machinery such as mining trucks and excavators, and the ‘REMAN’ facility where they rebuild and refurbish equipment and parts for customers.

We then split into groups and went on a walking tour of both facilities. We saw a number of mine trucks being assembled.

The “small” trucks can haul 180 tonnes and the large trucks 300 tonnes. The largest mining excavator weighs close to 800 tonnes when fully assembled! We learned that the logistics of transporting such large and heavy pieces is a major operation in itself with police, state and local government authorities all having their own bureaucracy to be satisfied before transport can commence. At the end of the tour we were treated to a very generous lunch where we continued to ask questions and network. DJR Team Penske site visit On June 28th, SCLAA Queensland members visited the famous DJR Team Penske workshop at Stapylton. Rachel (Team Coordinator) described how over $500,000 in renovations improved teamwork and workshop operations in this competitive sport.

Attendees viewed the workshop from the vehicles to the machinery shop to the Supercars transporter which travels over 50,000kms per year.

Rachel provided interesting statistics on the vehicles, drivers, the 40 team members, how they all coordinated to produce a competitive and continuously improving team at the Virgin Australia Supercars races. While the drivers are regularly in the spotlight, the tour enabled us to gain an appreciation of the logistics involving staff, vehicles and parts that cannot be underestimated on race day. The SCLAA would like to thank Nick Testu and Rachel for their wide ranging tour of this great facility.
