The Year in Review Members and Partners Over the last year, we have delivered on a number of objectives which have seen increased benefits to members, we recognise that members and partners interests are at the core of our association.: • Introduction of Platinum National Partnership and Executive membership - these two categories continue to increase year on year and include additional benefit of complimentary registration of 1 x table and 1 x registration per annum to any tier 1 event.

Chair Report from AGM held on 1st December 2023 As an Association with longevity and a proud history, in a marketplace with ever increasing sector specific member Associations, over the last year, SCLAA has increased its reputation, profile and will continue to strive to provide benefits for its members and the community it serves.

In my second year as Chair, I am extremely proud of all our passionate Board and State Committee volunteers, who continue to face numerous challenges in their day jobs, yet still provide support to SCLAA members and our valued Partners. Nationally, we have 40 volunteers across our State Committees.

Changes to SCLAA Board for 2024 I would like to welcome Edward Chow who will be taking the role of Treasurer & Brett McGowran State Director for SA/NT to the SCLAA Board.

With heartfelt gratitude to Amanda Cech (outgoing SA/ NT State Director) , Jason Mann (outgoing QLD State Director) and Lisa Brink (outgoing Treasurer). Your contributions over the last years have been too many to mention and we thank you for your insights, execution of strategic objectives and passion for the SCLAA and industry.

• Free of Charge events for members - 72% of all our events were provided free of charge to Association Members. In addition, many events also provided members the opportunity to register a non member associate at member pricing.

• In addition, Members enjoyed Discounted Conference pricing for some of the largest National industry conferences, including Supply Chain Week, Megatrans and others.

• We reintroduced the student membership category (for full and part time students of any institution) After a compelling business case presented by the TED Committee and in consultation with many heads of staff at Australian universities including Sydney University and RMIT. • We delivered 2 x Micro-credential courses via collaboration with Sydney Uni ITLS instigated and presented by Independent Director Ben Fahimnia.

The courses, Foundations of Intelligent Supply Chain Management, were funded by the Australian Government and Preferential registration was free of charge to Professional and Executive members of SCLAA. • Other benefits gained for members during the year was free subscription to industry magazine Supply Chain Insights (SCI), which adds to the existing Free of charge subscriptions already provided to members via our agreements with MHD, Daily Cargo News, and Inside FMCG. • Members with an ABN continue to take advantage of the substantial fuel savings provided by our partnership with Ampol. This has been a valued benefit this year with the volatility in fuel costs during FY2023 and is available strictly via the Member Portal on our SCLAA website.

For the benefit of our members, we have also maintained membership subscription pricing at FY 22 levels and absorbed any increased association running costs from working capital reserves. Events: Our events continue to be most attended and held in high regard by the industry nationally.

Large scale National events included• Retail Fulfilment summit (in collaboration with Akolade)

role encompasses a 5 year strategic review, emerging employment trends and knowledge gaps in industry sectors. The role also explores emerging education trends, identifies opportunities for expansion of courses offered ie micro credentials, as well as student employment/internship programs

• International Womens Day-(Women in Logistics) networking event was held 8th March, by various States around the country and well attended by over 350 professionals.

The Advisory Board assists with bringing together industry and the tertiary faculty. The objective is to achieve ITLS strategy, shape graduate programs to align with supply chain and logistics industry requirements.

• Australian Supply Chain & Logistics Awards held in Sydney 10th November 2023 was a record breaker with nominations received and attendance exceeded 470 registrants! National Australian Built Environment Rating System (Nabers):

• Supply Chain week was held in June ( in conjunction with Conference partner Akolade)

This is administered by the NSW Office of Energy and Climate Change (OECC) and is an initiative launched and managed by the Australian Government in order to provide accurate modelling and measurement of energy efficiency, water usage, waste management and indoor environment quality of a building or tenancy and its impact on the environment. SCLAA role on the Committee is representative of warehouse and cold stores sector and to represent the views of our members and assist with strategy for 2024-2026.

• CeMat was held in July, where SCLAA was the association of choice in assisting with agenda and providing MC services, keynote speakers who provided valuable insights into current industry issues and solutions.

Marketing and Brand Awareness: Our marketing committee chaired by Vice Chair Samantha Martin Williams, continued with its objectives to increase brand awareness and the reach of SCLAA digital platforms.

Future strategic objectives will focus on further improvements to website functionality and monetization to assist the Association with revenue diversification.

Internal The Board held 2 very productive face to face strategic meetings during the year focussing on 2023 to 2025 objectives.

Member surveys earlier identified direct member to member connectivity and a jobs portal as high value benefits. We will continue to investigate the feasibility of these recommendations during 2024.

Advocacy and tabling members concerns and feedback to government and industry committees was also highlighted as important.

Industry & Member Advocacy and Representation

SCLAA has been part of the working Group over the last few years. SCLAA has now been invited to join the Steering committee as an Industry representative, bringing valuable insights and concerns to the forefront of Government and Energy guideline policies.

During 2023, SCLAA assisted with industry feedback towards the development and successful launch of the Nabers Energy ratings for warehouses and Cold Stores in the Logistics sector. A series of seminars was also incorporated to educate distribution centre operators and specialist construction companies in usage of the Nabers principles of design and energy efficiency measures https://www.nabers.gov.au/news/naberslaunches-energy-ratings-warehouses-and-coldstores Trade Technology Working Group (TTWG) SCLAA is an Industry representative on this Committee which was formed to assist with the digitisation initiatives for Australian Border Force, and evaluate technology solutions for a Simplified trade system to facilitate faster cargo movement.

For the coming year, the focus for events, Thought leadership and our SCLAA seminars will include industry issues such as ESG, promotion and information on career pathways in the industry as well as bringing the latest technology and innovation solutions including automation, robotics and AI solutions that can provide efficiencies.

The State Committees will also focus on member cohort specific events, tailored to enhance peer to peer networking, alongside our very successful cross industry sector events.

2024 is so far shaping up to be a very busy year and in closing I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the Board, State Committees, Secretariat and Administration personnel for their ongoing support, passion and commitment.

The event was attended by the Indian Ambassador to Australia and sponsored by Auspost Marine.

Snack Brands Australia Streamlines Inbound and Outbound deliveries with Mobiledock Background Snack Brands Australia (SBA), established in 1998, is a Sydney-based renowned snack food manufacturer known for its high-quality snacks like Samboy, Thins, Kettle, CC’s, and Cheezels.

SBA has a strong reputation and loyal consumer base, emphasising innovation and sustainability. It currently operates three Sydney sites consisting of a new DC in Orchard Hills, and their plants in Smithfield and Blacktown. A new plant in Orchard Hills will replace the latter two in 2024.

Off-the-shelf warehouse automation gives SMEs the same gains as the big players

Warehouse and intralogistics automation is often thought of as a highly customised solution that benefits the major players once they have reached a certain scale.

“With increasing labour costs and soaring commercial real estate prices, SMEs are looking for ways to increase storage density and maximise the efficiency of their picking and put-away processes,” he says.

But as technology advances, it is becoming increasingly available and affordable for Small-to-Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which account for 99.8% of businesses (more than 2.5 million) in Australia and 97% (more than 550,000) in New Zealand. Energy efficiency AutoStore is also a highly energy-efficient system, with each robot using approximately 0.1 kW of energy per hour. For comparison, 10 robots would use the equivalent of a toaster. typically deliver the same throughput with a 60% reduction in warehouse space.

Dematic Transforms John Dee’s Beef Supply Chain for Global Success Dematic today announced that John Dee, a family-owned Australian beef producer, has transformed its operations to enhance efficiency, productivity, accuracy, safety, and competitiveness to ensure its readiness for the evolving demands of global beef markets.

Across four generations, John Dee has consistently upheld a commitment to uncompromising quality and service. John Dee’s Warwick-based processing plant in Queensland, strategically located on the Darling Downs, just two hours from the port of Brisbane, is instrumental in supplying premium beef cuts to more than 145 customers in over 37 export markets worldwide. Over the years, it has evolved from a local beef producer into a major beef exporter servicing a diverse range of international markets.

“We’ve been a beef processor in Warwick since 1945 and today we’ve transformed into a full-blown beef export and processing operation,” explains John Hart, Owner of John Dee, Warwick. “In the early days, we sold full sets of meat parts, whereas today we break them up and send different components to Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan, the EU, and America.”

With growing demand, especially from international markets, John Dee faced a critical challenge. The company had outgrown its existing storage capacity, and manual operations were proving inadequate to meet the complexity and scale of their production.

“With the way we’re operating today, trying to get product into the right place at the right time, it was

becoming almost impossible to do it by hand,” says Hart. “In our previous manual operation, people had to understand all the product codes and pick by hand out of a cold store. With over 10,000 cartons being produced a day, it became a logistical nightmare. A thousand cartons a year that would go out of date because they couldn’t be located.”

In response to these challenges, John Dee embarked on a multi-staged facility upgrade project, partnering with Wiley and Dematic to design and implement automated systems tailored to their unique needs. At the heart of the transformation is the Dematic Multishuttle® Meat Buffer Storage and Handling System, a solution specifically designed to address the complexities of meat processing. This modern system automates the storage and retrieval of product cartons, streamlining operations in sub-zero conditions. It manages products both chilled to -1°C and frozen at -20°C, reducing the reliance on manual labour in harsh cold store and freezer environments.

“Our advanced Dematic Multishuttle system provides a high performance, accurate, safe, and cost-effective automated order fulfilment and despatch processing solution for the meat industry, and we are very excited to see John Dee reaping the many benefits at their Warwick facility,” says Soeren Schauki, Business

Development Manager at Dematic. “The system was completely operational at full speed on day one, and the throughput of this system is unmatched.”

Operation of the four-aisle, 30-level Multishuttle is managed by Dematic Warehouse Control System (WCS) software that provides full track and trace, where each carton is followed throughout the supply chain, so losing product is no longer possible. The WCS also controls the storage duration of all cartons, allowing John Dee to set the time each carton can remain in the system. This helps to improve the shelf life of the meat products and ensuring cold chain compliance is maintained.

The solution is designed for John Dee to scale up and increase its premium beef export market share.

One of the frozen aisles can also be switched to chilled in response to anticipated future growth and advancements in cold supply chain export markets across Asia.

“In working with Dematic, we ensured that our system would be able to adapt for the future growth of John Dee to increase capacity to match significant surges in demand, whilst also providing improved worker safety,” says Hart.

Since implementing the new system, John Dee reduces its reliance on labour, which in a tight labour market, has become difficult to source for harsh cold storage facilities. In doing so, John Dee has reduced occupational health and safety issues associated with employees working in a cold storage environment.

“Our recent expansion of our Warwick facility is the largest single investment in the company’s almost 80year history, and it is supporting our business growth and competitiveness during a time when beef exports are rising significantly,” concludes Hart.

New! International Supply Chain Security Education Program The International Supply Chain Security Education program launched in January 2023 and has been widely embraced by industry, with over 1,300 registered users.

This free online program is designed to support and assist Australian businesses to strengthen their international supply chain and compliant Customs processes. Initial rollout of the program consisted of 8 modules focusing on developing a security risk management approach to minimise negative impact on a business’s international supply chain. In April, Australian Border Force (ABF) officers detected and seized 120kg of cocaine, worth around $48 million, at the Sydney Container Examination Facility. The quantity of drugs detected amounted to approximately 600,000 street deals.

Upon inspection, officers found the container seal damaged. The container was subsequently x-rayed at the Sydney CEF and further anomalies were discovered.

ABF officers examined the contents of the container, finding three black duffel bags wrapped in black plastic amongst hessian sacks filled with coffee beans. The duffel bags were opened and found to contain packages wrapped in plastic, with tests confirming the substance to be cocaine.

Supply Chain Trends and Körber Technology on Show at 2023 Melbourne Supply Chain Conference

Last week, the University of Melbourne hosted its 2023 Melbourne Supply Chain Conference to analyse the latest trends impacting the Australian supply chain.

Talks and demonstrations for the event from industry leaders including Körber centred around how the latest technologies intersect with supply chain sustainability and resilience.

Focused on how technology advancements – such as robotics and artificial intelligence – are altering the functionality of supply chains and logistics currently and in the future, global supply chain tech solutions provider Körber was invited to showcase its leading supply chain technology via Virtual Reality (VR) experience.

Over 100 attendants were given the chance to experience first-hand virtual warehouse picking with Körber’s automation solutions. The VR helps to visualise how robots and automation can save time and space on the warehouse floor, improving picking capacity for businesses looking to support higher volumes.

Nikki Jones, Körber Director of Marketing APAC, said that the event was a fantastic example of collaboration between education and industry.

“Körber was thrilled to have the opportunity to connect with students across various faculties, as well as industry experts and like-minded business to showcase the current trends, opportunities and challenges in today’s supply chain,” she said.

“We were glad to see the virtual reality demonstration was well-received and gave attendants a glimpse into how our automated picking systems are helping businesses reach new heights in the e-commerce era.”

According to one of the event organisers, Dr George Panas, Department of Management and Marketing University of Melbourne – who has 25 years of management experience in industry and consulting – the event displayed how industry collaboration is crucial to support the future of Australian supply chains.

“Collaboration between Universities and industry is vital and mutually beneficial. In 2023, our collaboration efforts have centred around bringing real life, practical supply chain experiences to students, via conferences, sites visits, guest speakers etc. There is further potential to collaborate on many fronts in the future, including student projects, internships and joint research,” Panas said.

The conference successfully facilitated the sharing of ideas between students, academics and industry leaders, allowing students to translate learnings in the lecture halls into real-world situations.

“Our aim at the conference was to inspire students into considering a career in supply chain management.

Körber and their technology solutions provide a great platform to do that - showcasing innovative, cuttingedge solutions that can inspire our students. Körber has consistently been a strong partner in helping us here at the University of Melbourne inspire the next generation of supply chain leaders.”

VIC/TAS Division Report My final sign-off as VIC/TAS President for 2023 As I conclude my term as VIC/TAS President for 2023, I would like to express my gratitude to several individuals who have played a pivotal role in the success of the VIC/ TAS division and also extend my heartfelt thanks to these dedicated individuals at SCLAA who have made a significant impact on my journey throughout my tenure as President.

The senior leadership team at SCLAA are a remarkable group of individuals, pouring their passion and energy into a sector they love, creating a connecting bong across an entire industry, this is the secret sauce which makes this association a special place to be part of, either as a volunteer or as a member.

I am particularly thankful to VIC/TAS Director Rakesh Bandipelli and Independent Director Stephen Lakey for entrusting me with the Presidential role throughout 2023. Being recognised as a candidate by these two individuals was truly an honour, and I am privileged to have been given the opportunity by them.

Sue Tomic, SCLAA’s Chair, deserves special acknowledgment for her strategic vision that has contributed significantly to the associational success, in 2023, the SCLAA exhibited many national industry trade shows and events thanks to her unwavering commitment to showcasing the association’s capacity and capability.

I must also express my deepest gratitude to SCLAA’s Independent Director, Kyle Rogers, who has served as a mentor, industry connector, and, above all, a friend.

Kyle has shown me that adversity is a superpower in this industry.

NSW/ACT Division Report The NSW SCLAA (Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia) End of Year Mentoring and Christmas Drinks event held on December 14, 2023, was an outstanding success, bringing together mentors, mentees, and industry professionals for an evening of networking, collaboration, and festive celebration.

The event, hosted at Vessel bar in Sydney, provided a unique opportunity for mentors and mentees to meet face-to-face, fostering meaningful connections within the supply chain and logistics community.

The evening kicked off with a brief welcome address from SCLAA committee member Ishan Galapathy, expressing gratitude for the support throughout the year and acknowledging the dedication of mentors and mentees in advancing the industry. The mentorship program, a cornerstone of the association’s initiatives, was spotlighted as a key driver of professional development within the supply chain and logistics sector.

Red Sea Traffic Rerouted After More Attacks on Ships Posted by Abby Williams https://www.thedcn.com.au/

Shipping companies are rerouting vessel traffic away from the Suez Canal and the Red Sea following more attacks on commercial ships.

There has been a surge in attacks since Yemen’s Houthi militia broadened a threat to target Israel-affiliated ships to include all ships sailing to Israel.

In the past few days, attacks from Houthi-controlled Yemen struck Hapag-Lloyd’s Al J asrah and MSC Palatium III, which are both Liberian-flagged containerships.

Other vessels such as Maersk Gibraltar were targeted without being hit, according to Reuters.

MSC confirmed over the weekend that MSC Palatium III was attacked while transiting the Red Sea under a sub charter to Messina Line.

All crew are safe with no reported injuries, meanwhile the vessel suffered limited fire damage and has been taken out of service,” MSC said in a statement.

“Due to this incident and to protect the lives and safety of our seafarers, until the Red Sea passage is safe, MSC ships will not transit the Suez Canal Eastbound and Westbound. Already now, some services will be rerouted to go via the Cape of Good Hope instead.

“This disruption will impact the sailing schedules by several days of vessels booked for Suez transit.

We ask for your understanding under these serious circumstances.”

A spokesperson for Maersk told Reuters the Danish shipping giant would pause all container shipments through the Red Sea following the “near miss” involving Maersk Gibraltar.

“We have instructed all Maersk vessels in the area bound to pass through the Bab al-Mandab Strait to pause their journey until further notice,” the company said in a statement cited by Reuters.

CMA CGM on Sunday said its concerns for safety are also growing as the situation deteriorates.

“We have been taking over the past days increasing prevention measures to ensure the safety of our vessels and their crews navigating these waters,” it said.

“As such we have decided to instruct all CMA CGM containerships in the area that are scheduled to pass through the Red Sea to reach safe areas and pause their journey in safe waters with immediate effect until further notice.”

The Cost of the Threat Shipping intelligence platform Xeneta believes the missile and drone attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden could trigger a global supplychain crisis.

“All ships transiting the Suez Canal must sail through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden and the Houthi militia

has made clear that any vessel is a target,” Xeneta chief analyst Peter Sand said.

“I do not believe the Suez Canal will close, however, if there are further significant escalations then we cannot rule it out, even if it is just for a few days.”

Mr Sand recalled the Ever Given incident in the Suez Canal in 2021 and its consequences for supply chains.

“The ocean freight industry has been deeply scarred by Ever Given and is frankly terrified of any situation which threatens the closure of the Suez Canal.”

Xeneta said more than 50 vessels transit the Suez Canal every day, carrying billions of dollars of goods to North Europe, Mediterranean and North America East Coast.

Mr Sand noted the ongoing restrictions in the Panama Canal due to drought.

“We are already seeing ocean freight liner operators and owners choosing to reroute vessels away from the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden region,” Mr Sand said.

“Due to the importance of the Suez Canal to global supply chains, even a small disruption can have big consequences.

“The main alternative is to sail around the Cape of Good Hope, which adds up to 10 days sailing time for services from Asia to North Europe and East Mediterranean.

“We may also see the cost of moving freight by ocean increase dramatically. Depending on the scale and duration of any disruption at the Suez Canal, we could see ocean freight shipping rates increase by anything up to 100%.”

Concerns for Crew The International Chamber of Shipping also denounced the attacks against merchant ships, highlighting the consequences for crews.

“These are unacceptable acts of aggression which threaten the lives of innocent seafarers and the safety of merchant shipping,” ICS said. ”These attacks are a flagrant breach of international law. States with influence in the region should, as a matter of urgency, work to stop the actions of the Houthis in attacking seafarers and merchant ships, and de-escalate what is now an extremely serious threat to international trade.”

ICS said industry is “extremely concerned” about the attacks and is “understood to be considering additional actions” which could see more ships being rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope.

The World Shipping Council said it was “deeply alarmed and concerned” about the escalating security crisis in the Red Sea region.

“The disturbing surge of attacks on vessels poses an imminent threat to the safety and lives of the seafarers navigating these waters,” it said.

“The right of freedom of navigation stands as a fundamental right under international law and must be safeguarded.

“The World Shipping Council urgently calls upon the global community to take decisive action to protect seafarers and freedom of navigation.”

He now lectures at the University of Melbourne, in both undergraduate and postgraduate supply chain management subjects.

In his teaching, George draws extensively on his own personal work experience, where he led major transformational supply chain strategy initiatives at Coles Group, Australia Post, and nbn. George is passionate about ensuring academic programs engage closely with industry, ensuring graduates are future ready to meet the needs of organisations and society.

His current research interests include sustainable supply chains, investigating whether greater disclosure of packaging to be used by retailers in the eCommerce last mile can impact consumer purchasing decisions and subsequent waste George Panas generation; and ethical supply chain sourcing, where he has published in leading operations management academic journals on the topic of managerial decision-making and modern slavery in global supply chains. Furthermore, George maintains a presence in industry by performing occasional consulting in supply chain strategy, in his role as a Director of Q3 Consulting.
