SCLAA National Chairman - Joshua Holmes
Joshua Holmes is Chairman of the SCLAA. Joshua has been working with SCLAA over 11 years and has been actively involved with local and national events, promoting to non-members within the industry and his networks.
It is great to see both our Queensland and Western Australian Divisions starting face-to-face events. Queensland recently held two networking events and are planning a ‘Golfing Event’ later this month. WA has had a face-to-face networking event and the 21st SCLAA WA Peter Smith Memorial Golf Day which was once again a great success. Hopefully our other Divisions will soon be able to start their face-to-face events again. With the current COVID-19 restrictions, the SCLAA has decided to announce the Australian Supply Chain & Logistics Award winners and high commendation recipients online. All those on the SCLAA database will receive an invitation to view the announcements and be provided with a link. The announcements will take place on 10 December. Finalists in each of the seven categories will be announced via email, social media and the SCLAA news page on 18 November. Good luck to all those who have submitted entries!
Our auditors are finalizing the 2019/2020 financials in preparation for the upcoming Annual General Meeting to be held via webinar at 1pm on 19 November. Any members wanting to attend the AGM should contact the SCLAA National Secretariat on secretary@sclaa. com.au for a link to join the webinar. A number of events are planned by the Divisions between now and the end of the year so keep an eye on the Calendar of Events on the website. The webinar “Women in Supply Chain – ‘HerStories’ " Is scheduled to take place on 12 November. Straight Talking - David Doherty OAM How are you doing? R U Ok? Do not be shy! You can tell me about anything going on in your life. You can trust me and ask for help. I will listen and seek to comfort and assist you in dealing with issues. Do you have someone in your life you can share troubling thoughts and issues with? Are you someone colleagues, friends, family can turn to seek such counselling and consoling? October is Mental Health Month in Australia. The Theme is “Mental Health Matters”. Our profession/Industries are not immune. Many of our people are silently suffering. There is no vaccine or panacea for the silent enemy that lurks in the psyche of countless people. The MHFA (Mental Health Foundation of Australia) works towards promoting better mental health for all by: - advocating for mental health - Raising awareness for mental health - providing education on mental health - Fostering resilience on mental health - providing mental health support to consumers, carers, professionals, and communities. I have had personal experience with a close associate suffering recurring episodes of mental health trauma. I know it is awfully hard to confess to existence of problems and to overtly share such things. Seeking treatment is not easy Embarrassment and long held attitudes on showing weakness or softer side present formidable impediments to healing. The lack of readily available professional help is also a critical obstacle. In these difficult times we can still take the time to influence understanding, counselling, engaging, and healing for mental illness. The rampant scourge can be tamed with compassion, empathy, and practical aid. You can become a mental health warrior 4

in your professional and community roles. Now is the time for you to stand with those in need of support. Make a pledge today! The first mental health foundation for transport and logistics workers was launched in Australia in August 2020. Representatives from Road Transport and Logistics Industries joined forces to launch “Healthy Heads in Trucks and Sheds Foundation”. It is a national industry wide approach to tackling mental health and wellbeing. (www. Healthyheads.org.au) Recently I learned that an elite AFL Footballer had a life changing experience. He read a book,” The Road Less Travelled” by M Scott Peck. Now I have read it and am enamoured of the lessons it contains. It is available as an eBook. I spent most of my working life in the biopharmaceutical industry-CSL Limited. As a General Manager I had unfettered witness/participation in the reinvention of the organisation to become a global powerhouse and the largest market cap company in Australia. The critical success factor was leadership from CEO Brian McNamee. He was fearless, focused, visionary, an unlimited delegator/communicator with absolute clarity on employee performance and rewards. He built empowered teams that worked tirelessly and productively. There is no substitute for effective leadership. The old macho/tyrannical approach does not cut it now. “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader”. (John Quincey Adams). People gravitate to genuine leaders regardless of their status or position. Some of the best leaders ever were never selected. Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Mother Theresa, etc. They were visionary, courageous, empathetic, and resilient. “Leaders instil in their people a hope for success and a belief in themselves. Positive leaders empower people to
accomplish their goals” (Unknown). One of my mentors suggested to me that the success of any leader is measured by the success of the people they lead. A leader needs to create and nurture an environment where all people can perform at their absolute best. “A good objective of leadership is to help those who are doing poorly to do well and to help those who are doing well to do even better” (Jim Rohn). Two other books in my personal Library that I often refer to are: ‘The Tao of Personal Leadership” (Diane Dreher) “Drive” (Daniel Pink) Leadership demands courage to stand up for the right things and to do those right things the right way. (Peter Drucker). No excuses. Collaborative Supply Chains offer great benefits often not generally achieved. Leaders for Supply Chains will be in heavy demand in post Corona economic rebuilding. I encourage all SCLAA members to prepare and be ready for new courageous leadership. Learning and experience are non-negotiable. “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other” (John F Kennedy). Ultimate responsibility for actions, errors, and successes are critical features, as are honesty, communication, and authenticity. Do our political leaders display those characteristics? Religious leaders have also come under scrutiny on those grounds. Time to step up and be measured against those standards. Brian Lynn - WA State President By the time that you read this we'll have celebrated the traditional start of summer, the SCLAA WA's Peter Smith Memorial Golf Day, which will see fifty WA logisticians resume their traditional friendly rivalries over 18 holes and beyond. Based on current forecasts the weather is looking set fair for a fabulous day. An event report and photos will appear in the next newsletter. Great kudos is again due to our WA director Dan Di Stasio for his fantastic solo organisational efforts. Back in September a healthy gathering of members and non-members assembled at the Camfield to celebrate the resumption of gatherings in WA. Operational industry representatives, service providers, SCLAA partners and educational institutions were all well represented at a much needed opportunity to destress and compare notes on how to survive COVID. Following the Golf Day, November will see the SCLAA represented at an ECU event showcasing how Supply Chain and Logistics graduates can best acquire the necessary skills to take advantage of workplace opportunities and how
employers need to balance achieving kpis with developing employees. The association prides itself in its development from local universities of local talent with an excellent track record of graduates progressing through the local committee and association awards to key industry roles. Continuing with the theme of awards December will see an end of year networking event combined with a virtual feed of the ASCL awards and an opportunity for WA to celebrate with its local candidates. With the New Year rapidly approaching the resumption of the association's popular site visits is imminent. Watch the normal communication channels for more information. Also if you'd like to broaden your informal industry experience and network with your peers there are always opportunities to be involved with the WA committee. 21st Annual SCLAA WA Peter Smith Memorial Golf Day The 21st SCLAA Peter Smith Memorial golf day took place at the beautiful Kwinana Golf Course on 16th October 2020. During such a strange and interrupted year it was great to get this day off the ground and happening for the members, sponsors and guests. It proved a great platform to catch up with our peers from across the state and reconnect. This year we were supported by 14 amazing sponsors and 52 players in the field. Days like this don’t happen without the sponsors and again we would like to thank Aboriginal United Services, AWH, CH Robinson, Chep, D.J. DI STASIO, DMD, Gamma Solutions, illuminate Group, JD Containers, Licences 4 Work, SVN, Toyota Material Handling, TSS Sensitive Freight and Western Union. Your support is greatly appreciated. Kwinana Golf Course proved a great test on the day with the winning team from of Rob and Reece from DMD carding a net score of 64.5 in the 2-ball Ambrose format. They took home the main team prize of a Bushnell GPS watch donated by Toyota Material Handling. It’s a rags to riches story for DMD taking home the NAGA in 2018. They were followed closely by Corey and Leonard from Western Union on 67.5, hopefully the meat trays from Kwinana meat and Poultry lasted the weekend. Nothing could split the teams from AUS and D.J. DI STASIO, they tied for 3rd on 70.25 taking home the drinks from AWH. At the other end of the table was the team of Andrew and Andrew from Western Union taking
home the NAGA with a 93.25. Hopefully Joel from The Kwinana Golf Club will soft them out during their lessons. It’s been a tough year for Corrine Smith, wife of the late Peter. But without fail and even injured she attended and was a ray of sunshine on the day. Unable to play her boys represented her well on the course and we were treated to a few of the customary jokes at the presentations. The Kwinana Golf Course is set in picturesque native woodland only 30 minutes south of Perth CBD. The course is populated with towering Marri, Tuart and Eucalyptus trees and has an abundance of native wildlife. We are open to the public, welcome green fee players, and have an open competition daily for those with a GA handicap. The club has extensive facilities including a licensed bar and fully stocked pro-shop with attentive staff. We also offer a large function room, which is ideal for events, corporate days, weddings, and parties. Queensland Division
George Hodgson - QLD State President
Well a busy couple of months for the QLD division with our first face to face networking event held on 10 Sep at the Charming Squire, South Bank with members engaging in a relaxed setting to discuss all things logistics. We also had our second networking event on the 8 Oct at BrewDog, Murarrie, where we met our attendance quota, which was fantastic. Again it highlighted the importance of being able to connect in person and an opportunity to share our experiences. Jason Mann our mentoring coordinator has also been busy ensuring the SCLAA mentoring program, which is well underway, with both mentors and mentees have been connecting with each other over the last month. The feedback I have received from members on this program and our networking events highlights the value of SCLAA membership in the current COVID-19 environment. On behalf of the committee I thank you for your ongoing support to these events and programs. Speaking of events the committee is looking to get back to our regular monthly networking events, and we are looking to lock in our next six months of networking events, so you can start to put the dates into your calendar. These events are a great opportunity to talk Logistics and explore ideas, so if you are yet to attend a networking event, please put one in your calendar and come along.

In regards to site visits, there will be no site visits conducted for the remainder of this year, due to COVID-19 limitations. However we are planning for site visits to return next year with a number of them lined up with Asahi Beverages and Distribution centre soon to be confirmed and the RAAF Amberley 36 Squadron C17 Globemaster warehouse tour also getting planned. As the current COVID-19 situation continues, the Supply Chain and Logistics industry within Australia faces a significant recovery challenge in future years, with product demand, labour cost and global economy recovery impacting on operating costs and profit. The federal budget is looking to build infrastructure to get the economy moving and jobs created. This is a good thing for the Supply Chain and Logistics industry as all areas of the Supply Chain will be required to make future infrastructure a reality. As individuals we can only influence these outcomes by the way we deliver logistics in the field we work in. I hope that the value you receive through the SCLAA events and programs will assist you in your work recovery. The time is now, to be optimistic and look to the future. NSW/ACT Division Qld Division Cathy-Anne Jones - NSW/ACT State President Despite the ongoing government restrictions, we have had a very busy period. SCLAA has continued to provide quality webinars and Zoom meetings on a range of thought leadership, practical knowledge and networking opportunities. Our recent webinar “Graduates Guide to Navigating the Industry” focussed on assisting graduates and was well attended. Big thank you to our special guest speakers: April McElligott – recent graduate who is now working with FultonMarket Group and a current NSW committee member also active on our WISC sub-committee. April shared her experiences transitioning from University to industry and offered great tips and insights. Geoffrey Clifton - Senior Lecturer in Transport and Logistics Management - Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies | The University of Sydney Business School. Geoffrey brought great insight, had some data to make us think and is actively involving the student body with industry. Peter Pychtin – GradSift software – designed to assist companies in refining the volume and quality of graduate applications and a recruiter with over a decade of graduate recruitment experience. Peter had some fabulous tips for students to stand out from the crowd and how to emphasise transferable skills. A big welcome to all new SCLAA NSW members – look out for quality content coming across the next few months and we hope to be out and about a bit more as restrictions lift into 2021. We had a face to face networking meeting at the Bella Vista Hotel 15th October. A great and informal networking opportunity. Government restrictions specified that we had to be seated but we managed to mingle in a safe manner. A number of new connections were made and there was a lot of hearty laughter. Our Mentoring program is continuing and we have had great feedback so far from Mentors and Mentees. We hope to report back to you with some insights into the program and what it meant to participants, once they have completed. The NSW WISC sub-committee is working closely with the Victorian Branch to launch a series of webinars in support of the great women we have in our industry. Don’t want to let the cat out of the bag yet, but stay tuned for great content across coming months. This period of no-contact, despite being a big shift for all of us, has seen a rapid adjustment to new styles of networking and connecting. The Zoom and webinar meetings have been surprisingly successful in connecting people quickly and easily as people have met “face to face” already, albeit in a different format. This is a great tool that we suspect will stay with us even as we return to site visits and in-person events. For those currently unemployed, in between roles or trying to crack into the industry, I cannot overemphasise how important it is to connect with people. It keeps you sane, keeps your knowledge and understanding current, and might just open some doors. Our industry is better placed than most to withstand the recent disruptions and has been brought to the fore in discussions during this period. The future looks bright! Stephen Lakey - VIC/TAS State President The warmth of Spring has brought with it an optimism and hope of an end of year and Christmas that could be shared with at least a small group of family & friends. That is by no means certain but hope is a good thing – particularly if you are from Victoria! The Victorian & Tasmanian Division has powered through this difficult season providing what I hope have been educational and thought-provoking webinars that are of benefit to our membership. A sign of any healthy group is diversity and the VIC TAS committee is no exception with a wide variety of industry experts making up our numbers. This year we have moved around our ranks to share our expertise with a 20 minutes presentation from one member at each committee meeting. This has been a great way to educate the group on the many different elements that make up a modern supply chain.

As one of the mentors in the program I have been privileged to have Gan Pillai as my mentee. Gan & I have met virtually over Zoom for at least an hour each month since June to talk about career & life goals. It has been a time that I look forward to and from personal experience is as rewarding for the mentor as the mentee. It has been encouraging to see that Gan has recently taken the decision to join our fortnightly committee meetings and to get more actively involved with the SCLAA. Its hard to believe that we are already in Q4-20 and we appreciate you taking time to read this during your busy schedule. First and foremost, I would like to acknowledge all Victorians commitment in doing a great job by fighting against the COVID and things are looking positive so hopefully we can meet our family and friends over festive season. The SCLAA team here in Victoria have been very resilient and we have been able to support each other virtually by regularly catching up. In addition to that we also made some tremendous progress over the last few months in successfully delivering webinars throughout this pandemic. Mentorship programme has been a huge success this year again and we are planning to organise a closing ceremony in the coming months and celebrate its success.

Majority of my success with SCLAA was possible right from the beginning since I was very clear with my goals and was committed. I strongly urge everyone who are keen to grow, to have a set of personal goals, stay focussed on them while assessing every opportunity with whether it will help you achieve goals or not. Any journey without a goal is almost like following a GPS without a destination. Goals can be as small as expanding your LinkedIn professional connection but it is important to have something so it can be evaluated overtime. Finally, I would like to summarise that regularly networking within your industry and discipline can set you up well to progress in your career and there’s no better association to start this journey with to horizon your Supply Chain relationships other than SCLAA.
VIC/TAS Member in Focus Introducing SCLAA VIC/TAS Member, Gan Pillaill Why did you join the SCLAA? What benefits do you believe the SCLAA offers all their members? SCLAA offers insightful exposure into supply chain management and it can be used as a tool to accomplish my goals to help me further my knowledge and have promising career in the industry. However, my main reason was to enrol in the mentorship program following the 2019-2020 program. I believe SCLAA offers its members a wide range of exposure to professionals and experts in the supply chain and logistics industry. It provides a platform for individuals from different areas to share their experiences and learn from different segments of the industry. Moreover the seminars which have now become webinars and zoom meetings are a great way to get a group of people connect with each other. Gan Pillai
What are your areas of expertise?
I have been fortunate to have a varied career to date, which has seen me take on roles as disparate as pick/pack roles on the shop floor, management of distribution activities as well as managing warehousing. Whilst I always fancy myself as a forklift driver, some of my previous staff would probably say it is a bit of a stretch to describe it as an area of expertise! I was fortunate to spend a number of years working with cold chain, FMCG products, and have strong operational knowledge of both warehousing and transport in this space. Continuing my career in transport, I am currently working in the management of distribution of chemicals and related products. These chemicals are usually classified as dangerous goods and are most commonly in the form of bulk liquids. Whilst there is still much for me to learn in this specialised industry, I am now building my knowledge in this space to complement my existing knowledge of cold-chain FMCG operations.
What are you passionate about?
I am an outgoing individual who loves to go for a hike or a walk on the beach. I absolutely love exploring new cuisines and like honing my ability to cook delicious food. I’m very intrigued about technology advancements, developments in the area of sustainable practices in supply chain management across the globe. I am also fully engaged in giving back to the community specially during this difficult pandemic situation.
What is the proudest moment of your career?
Most joyful moment in my career is definitely coming to Australia to pursue my masters and getting a job opportunity in my field. I am the first person in my family to complete a master’s degree overseas hence it is a proud moment for my family as well.
What are your career aspirations?
I am a young, enthusiastic and motivated individual who is always willing to gain more knowledge and experience while enhancing my expertise in the supply chain and logistics industry. My short-term goal would be to transition into the warehousing and logistics industry which will help me build my long-term goal of running my own organisation in the Supply Chain & Logistics industry. Although it is too early in my career to decide a specific field for long term aspirations but I’d certainly like to explore areas like import /export, Global Logistics and Procurement with a focus of sustainable practises. I am encouragingly open to new ideas and adapting change.
Why did you choose supply chain?
Every major organisation globally has a supply chain. The idea of pursuing supply chain as a career interest was because of my fascination with the machinery that is the “Global supply chain”, how it is possible today to efficiently interact and do business with people living on geographically opposite sides of the world is something that excites me. The advancement in convenience of accessing services and products have immensely grown in the last 25 years. These are exciting times for the industry. I believe that I’m a multi-tasker and can efficiently handle various aspects of any project competently, which is a valued skill to have for this industry in particular, also with the scope and vastness of the application of this field in the global scenario, I feel supply chain is a good space to be in at the moment. 16
