SCLAA National Chairman - Matthew Wragg

Matthew Wragg is Chairman of the SCLAA. Matthew is a Supply Chain professional and the Principal Director of MAEZ, a national consultancy specialising in Chain of Responsibility Management and Supply Chain Risk.

MAEZ is based in Adelaide with satellite offices in Melbourne and Sydney.

It it is with great honor that I take the reins of the SCLAA in 2020, to take the leadership role of an important element in our beloved industry from a wonderful and inspiring leader, Amanda O'Brien.

Amanda and I first met in 2017, when I first decided to participate further within the association. We quickly grew a fond friendship, which I think was that we both felt we have a deep appreciation for what the Association is about for its members, and the goals and aspirations we have for the association were one in the same.

With you, I'd like to thank Amanda for all her hard work within the Association over the past 7 years and especially while leading the SCLAA as Chairman.

Chair. Amanda has made terrific contributions both personally, professionally and as an astute business women. Amanda lead the organisation through many challenges and much change. Amanda delivered to its members great and new tier one events like Women in Logistics as well as revitalizing the annual ASCLA awards, all at the same time as ensuring that each state delivered value to its members through outstanding events, ensuring that the Association maintained the interest of its heart and soul.

Each of the directors, including myself understand that without you, its valued member, we would not have a resource that allows collaboration and learning in fun and accessible environments. Through Amanda's leadership, the SCLAA has developed a keen guiding value, which is to ensure that we provide us all, valued SCLAA members, with value at every opportunity.

I salute Amanda for all her kind hearted, hard work while supporting the SCLAA in a tough, male dominant environment, and wish her well in her future Supply Chain endeavours.

Moving forward, the supply chain environment is changing, rapidly. Globalization has brought about an industry where demand is immediate and information never stops rolling, even while we sleep. Conditions 2

are dramatic, with governments closing borders and leveraging change at will, with old strategic supply partners. Technology is shifting power and opportunities where cheaper labor and synergies prevailed, don't provide such a lucrative strategic future. But the customer still demands more.

Resource control and financial power drives political policy in today's global landscape, not the most equipped armed forces. While technology is bringing humanity closer, we are still though frustrated and tormented by turmoil and uncertainty, when it affects us personally.

The Association has a challenging year ahead., with the Coronavirus significantly disrupting supply chain and global economies, adding pressure to the Australian landscape. It is imperative that we deliver opportunities to our members that offer them all the opportunity to understand what the future can bring, both technological and through new relationships.

While we will move forward as an Association by developing new opportunities for our members, we must be cautious about how we ensure the longevity of the Association, given the challenges that surround us all, everyday.

The SCLAA Board will meet in person twice this year, with the view to enhance our position in the marketplace and deliver for its members a more robust membership value proposition. As always, we value the opportunity that this brings us all, but realise that your voice is important. Our Directors will be hard at work, listening to your opinions as we make this change for the Association and all our members far and wide.

Profile - Matthew Wragg As a young man I flew a plane by the time I was thirteen, transportation was in my blood and with parents and grandparents who owned and operated businesses, I knew I had a destiny that would encapsulate an entrepreneurial future.

With a career in supply chain that has spanned countries and financial crisis, such as the GFC. It has never been an easy ride through my career. But I live with the knowledge that I have a deep understanding of supply chain from the front line through to senior corporate.

Due to this, I serve the SCLAA with enthusiasm, as Supply Chain has always served me. It has provided without pause for the last 20 years and for that I am thankful.

With the tools that I have learnt through trial and error, I know that I have much to offer the Association and its members.

My intent for the Association is simple; Share, Educate and Support.

Gaining a Masters in Logistics from Sydney Uni late in my career, it surrendered the opportunity to understand the current challenges and future tech that Supply Chain has on offer. Supply Chain is more immediate than ever before and I know that demand and the competitive human spirit will push that boundary further.

I am thankful to the path that I have taken, as I now live knowing that Supply Chain supports those who work hard and embrace it for what it is and work with the ebbs and flows, that Supply Chain throws at its incumbents each and every day.

SCLAA Welcomes New Directors to the Board The Supply Chain & Logistics Association of Australia has a long history of members working collaboratively for members of the industry. With all industries though, including that of Supply Chain, disruption to the status quo is a clear and present danger to the future of the Association.

The Association is in a great financial position, our cash reserves are strong and growth is maintaining our position in the marketplace. But like all body corporates, it is faced with the question of doing nothing or evolving as an organisation to maintain its competitive edge and growing with its members.

At the same time, globalisation is afoot. The association must encompass this into its strategy. When the SCLAA setout over 40 years ago, there were no computers or internet. It was about networking and leadership face to face. Those times are gone.

I wish to introduce to you our vibrant and energetic board, who are as committed as I, to ensure the longevity of our association and its membership.

This year is an important year, to develop a clear communication strategy and a way forward for our membership to grow and expand through the Supply Chain. We are excited to talk to many different industry bodies and discuss ideas about how we can all work together, given the challenging and changing landscape. But to do this efficiently and with clear direction and understanding of what must come next, the SCLAA has introduced new Independent Directors to help lead that charge.

We must work together as a team to forge ahead and I am delighted to introduce to you a team of new and old faces, that I am utmost confident will allow the SCLAA to deliver as members, for its members, a future well beyond the next 40 years.

Straight Talking - David Doherty OAM An event in my life has recently caused me to be grief stricken. I have been heart broken a few times over the years, but this has really rocked me. I have been unable to meet my commitments and reduced to crying frequently.

This week a bit of rational thinking has started to restore some equilibrium however I am not yet “right”. Isolating myself and focusing on the damaging issue has not helped me.

Now the point of this is not to seek sympathy or such but to draw attention to the issue of mental health in Supply Chain and Logistics. Very few people would have been aware of my recent anguish. Bravado and defensive attitudes guarded my inner turmoil from my colleagues and contacts.

Many men deal with emotional issues the same way.

I am sure many people you know have some issue causing them torment.

Yet their "stiff upper lip" is protecting their secret from public attention.

Most people at some time in their lives will experience being overwhelmed, besieged, depressed, anxious, unable to cope. No one is immune to these things I should have reached out seeking help in recent weeks. I did not. Old habits die hard. I stoically maintained a public attitude that pretended I was ok.

If you are experiencing a difficult situation, my advice is, be brave, reach out and ask for help. If you are aware that a colleague is in turmoil offer understanding and support without judgement.

Some years ago, Lance Secretans, a Canadian Guru, suggested that business systems mitigate against

compassionate dealing with people (employees and such). He mused that we discreetly encourage people to leave their personal problems at the door when they come to work in the morning--- and perhaps pick up the problems again when they leave at the end of the day. "Look around", he said, "the guy next to you may have a serious illness, the guy on the other side may be going through a relationship break up, and so on” Don’t think mental health and emotional stability issues are things that happen only to other people.

Reach out and support all your colleagues and associates. Offer compassion, understanding, and facilitate resilience.

Mental Health agony undoubtedly exists in Supply Chain and Logistics.

The profession can make a difference.

You can make a difference! Make a stand today to be a catalyst for better attitudes and processes for dealing with Mental Health and emotional disturbances in Supply Chain and Logistics.

Dr Peter Dapiran, a long-time associate of mine, recently alerted me to an issue related to online shopping. He said research showed that the extra delivery requirements, in speed and frequency, were creating more gridlocks in in cities across the globe. The Amazons and such of the business universe offer rapid delivery of just about anything in their inventory. This requires immediate availability of transport often in courier type vehicles. By the way, those vehicles are significant contributors to environmental pollution.

Have the infrastructure planners and business analysts given enough

thought to the impact of online shopping delivery explosion? Are buyers aware of the immediate delivery requirement increasing traffic and pollution? What do the Green shave to say about it?

Is your Supply Chain contributing to the vehicle snarls and smoggy atmosphere?

The Corona Virus is influencing nearly every industry. As Australia declined from being a manufacturer to importer, we lost the ability to respond quickly to changes in demand for goods. Has the Corona Virus disrupted your Supply Chains?

What actions are available to you to maintain supply in the short and long term?

This disruption will be a test of all the adaptability and flexibility teachings we have been exposed to over the years. Did you carry out any scenario planning assessing the "what if" if China is unable to supply? Scenario Planning is an essential for any business reliant on overseas supply. Give it a try now-I hope it is not too late!

Good leaders live their values with their principles on show every day of the year. No exceptions. Employees should also exhibit the same code! I am sure you know people who pretend and bluster. Don’t fall into that trap. Become a Martyr if necessary, to exhibit your values.

Experience can only be gained by going through the experience.

Corona Virus - Matthew Wragg You know the facts, the Corona Virus was first discovered in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. It has so far as of writing this, claimed 550 lives, through 28,000 cases involving the young and now a newborn baby. Chinese authorities shut down Wuhan on the 23rd of January at 548 cases of the virus and it has since infected a further 24,511 people. When it reached a death toll of 300 people, it claimed its first life outside of China, and it is still spreading.

The Australian Government has declared it a ‘Crisis’ and have instructed the Australian defence forces to source locations for overflow, to further support the work on Christmas Island, now housing over 200 Australian’s in quarantine.

A cruise ship, the Diamond Princess, is now situated in Japanese waters, off the coast of Yokohama in quarantine as Japanese officials try to curb the outbreak with 10 people on board found to be stricken with the Coronavirus. A further 273 people on board were tested, of which 31 tests came back positive and another 10 people have subsequently been found with the virus, none of whom showed major signs of infection. Separately, checks are now underway with a second ship with 1800 people on board, after 30 staff had reported feeling unwell, with fever-type symptoms.

The virus is infiltrating our global society faster than it can cope and without necessarily being noticed before it is too late. People are travelling globally, including to and from areas that are being infected.

It’s easy to sympathise with the Chinese government and any other group of people affected by this virus, it is crippling their economy and it seems to be that the virus has a long way to go yet. Shops, production lines, petrol stations and even taxis are not operating in Wuhan. Getting out of the

city on a mercy flight is one thing, a relief to some if you can make it! People have reported that getting to the airport to take advantage of a mercy flight was near impossible, as there were simply ‘no services at all’.

This is a very similar outbreak to the SARS outbreak, all over again. Simply called nCov, the Coronavirus has a current mortality rate of about 2% less than SARS (9% Mortality), but experts warn that initial numbers do not always indicate the true potential of the virus, except to say that it is definitely more contagious that the Flu. Those same experts also predict that the current true rate of infection stands at roughly 75,000 (Courtesy: WHO). But in terms of comparison, what you may not have heard about is the MERS-Cov virus, another known Coronavirus that has affected 2,499 people with a mortality rate of a staggering 34%. The Cov strains are here and we will see more, not to mention live through this epidemic which is here to stay for some time yet.

What must we be mindful of?

In Australia, as a PCBU, you have a duty to your staff. If someone is suspected of having a fever, even though the infection rate here in Australia is very low currently, you should send them home so they can see their local doctor.

You are always within your right to ask for clearance, before your employee is allowed back into your workforce, just to be on the safer side of sorry.

In 2003 during the outbreak and aftermath of the SARS outbreak, with just 8000+/- cases being recorded, it was deemed by global economists it cost our global economy roughly $40B and cost the Chinese Government roughly 0.8 percentage point of GDP growth. Economists have already started cutting their growth forecasts for China in 2020, but how much more will it cost?

The Apple Factory in the Chinese Province of Henan has been shut since the 4th of Feb and it is not known when the factory will re-open and resume operations to ship the world’s most popular handheld device. “Since the top provinces in terms of infections include Zhejiang, Guangdong and Henan, which are so important for tech manufacturing, there obviously is a big problem,” said Don Yew, an analyst at Morningstar in Singapore. “This episode is going to make it even clearer to Apple that there is overconcentration in China and they may want to address that.”

If the Coronavirus doesn’t halt production causing a Chinese meltdown, the movement of large scale operations to diversify risk, most certainly will. With such a heavy reliance on production networks within China, any major shift in production operations will most certainly hamper the country’s GDP output both in the short and long term. The shutdown also means that Apple may have to delay its new

iPhone launch to a later date. A cost to the organisation in terms of delay and migrating its marketing campaigns.

Could this occur in the next ten years? It’s a real question, which poses a significant risk.

“This may become the straw that breaks the camel’s back,” said Nick Vyas, an expert on global supply chain management at the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business. “Since it is China and lacks transparency, there is added uncertainty and fear. Given how we have streamlined things and reduced inventory and grown more globally intertwined, this produces end-to-end disruption. This outbreak will force them to factor the cost of failure into their calculation and might well strengthen the case for more onshore or near-shore operations,” Nick Vyas added.

Putting the products we buy off a shelf aside for a moment, the world’s Global tourism is being effected, by Airlines cutting flights to and from China, under instruction by their respective governments. Combine that in Australia with the fires and you have a perfect storm for places like Kangaroo Island in South Australia, Gippsland in Victoria and the Barossa in New South Wales. Our onshore tourism is taking a hit on profit and growth already, not to mention the fallout from a global catastrophe like the one we are seeing in China, due to the Coronavirus.

But most importantly, we need to turn our attention to our own personal lives. In 2019 Jeremy Thorpe, Chief Economist from PriceWaterCoopers released a report that outlined the dramatic effects on Australia’s economy if China’s economy suffered a hard landing. The ‘effects’ were deadly.

It suggested that with a GDP reduction in China of just 3-5 percentage points, Australia would suffer immensely.

Considering that SARS with 8,000 people effected, reduced China’s economy by 0.8 percentage points, it is easy to join the dots and consider that the current nCov virus (Coronavirus), could, in fact, generate this outcome for China’s economic growth. The modelling showed that a decrease in China’s GDP overnight by 3-5 percentage points could have ramifications in Australia to the magnitude of

140 Billion dollars (7 per cent) and 550,000 job losses.

The Centre of Independent Studies warned last year that the heavy reliance of some universities on fees from overseas students, especially those from China, was a financial risk to the government and taxpayers. This is significantly alarming as Universities are already seeing a demise in students, due to the shutdown of international airline travel to and from China.

The bad news doesn’t end there. They buy our products as well. According to DFAT, China imports 30.6% of Australian exports. If the global ramifications suggest that China will suffer from the outbreak itself and then from a shift in risk mitigation, by the very organisations who have helped build China’s economy in the first place. Our own Australian reliance on Chinese trade is in grave danger. Its hunger for our minerals, resources and education services is worth $123.3 billion to Australia, each year. Just 10% of that number would hold significant consequence.

Our next major trading partner is Japan, who consumes about 12.7 per cent of our exports or $51.1 billion, and who currently have a stranded ship off its shores holding passengers in quarantine.

The future is unknown, and the ramifications and risk are seemingly extreme. What happens next is dependent on how we as humans react and take seriously the risk that presents itself, right now and spreading. What is assured, is that the way in which major production companies handle their risk profile moving forward. Clearly, there are benefits to working with China, that will not end in our lifetime. But it is also clear that the status quo cannot continue, as the risk of losing market share in a global economy is real and affects everyone; Apple, BHP, Airbus and even Qantas. While Investors want returns, the Coronavirus will shift our global supply chain.

Coronavirus and its affect on international trade The Supply Chain & Logistics Association of Australia (SCLAA) is aware that many of its members (and their customers) are being directly affected by the coronavirus which has originated in China but now appears to be directly affecting other countries and their economies.

For example, there are now reports of an outbreak in South Korea where the Mayor of Daegu (South Korea’s fourth – largest city of 2.5 million residents) urged residents to stay inside following a large number of new infections being traced to church services attended by a patient who has tested positive for the virus.

For this reason, SCLAA has been in discussions with Rigby Cooke Lawyers whose Customs & Trade and Transport & Logistics teams are already working with the wider industry on the consequences to the supply chain from the virus to provide some thoughts on the impact on members and what can be done now and in the future.

By way of background, Rigby Cooke has already issued two updates on the issue, which are located here and here.

The current global scenario is unclear as is its possible development, however the following items seem to be relevant: • China is slowly getting back to work but export vessels are leaving with 10% of normal capacity filled. Few airlines are operating into China so most air cargo confined to the specialist air cargo providers whose fees are (naturally) increasing significantly. Best to pass on details of new capacities and costings to customers on the basis that they will be passed on.

• Inventories of imported goods whether for e-commerce or inputs to manufacture will be slow in being restored.

There will be even more pressure on here and overseas to expedite deliveries. Members should be working with suppliers and representatives in China to get a clear idea on delivery arrangements and update those details as more information arises. That should deter claims of ‘delay’ or ‘breach’ by customers.

• The movement of reefers is a special problem. Levies of $1,200 and $1,500 pre reefer are being sought due to lack of stevedores and power connections on docks in China already full of ‘held’ export stock. The shipping lines are even exercising rights to leave the reefers in other Asian ports altogether which could affect goods exporters.

Again, close work with customers and the shipping lines is required.

• You will hear the term ‘Force Majeure’ a lot. It is a provision in many contracts which allows a party to terminate a contract due to events beyond the control of the parties.

The provision in the contract sets out the way in which it is invoked starting with a notice to the other party. It is often invoked where there is civil unrest, piracy, war 11

or catastrophic weather or other events. In this case, the virus is being treated as Force Majeure following a resolution by the Chinese national government allowing another Chinese government agency to issue such notices and follow the process which applies at that point. Members and their customers may receive such notices which should be dealt with urgency. Don’t ignore them! Get some legal advice and you should notify your insurers as a claim for associated losses may follow.

• Other than Force Majeure, the provisions in contracts for ‘delay’ or ‘breach for failure to provide goods and services’ may come into play with your contractors or your customers blaming you for failure to deliver goods on time. Again, make sure you have evidence to push back with the real reasons for delay being outside of your control.

• Be aware of your customers who may be at risk, especially retailers who may be low in stock and do not have reserves or financial support to ‘ride out’ the effects of the virus to their supply chain after blows to consumer demand from bushfires and floods here. A number of retailers have gone to the wall recently and others have flagged problems. Some producers who also export to China have also announced adverse financial consequences as have airlines and shipping lines. Be alert to those customers who may be at risk even if they are not telling the world; and • Dust off your insurance policies and speak to your insurance brokers about what cover may be available, perhaps business interruption insurance or cover for legal disputes. While there will be a deductible to be paid, the additional coverage from an insurer plus their expertise in these events will be invaluable.

Hopefully, all will be ‘good neighbours’ as suggested by International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations and the worst can be managed before situations are irrevocably affected. At the very least keep in contact with your agents and colleagues in affected regions and your customers here to minimise uncertainty so far as possible.

Mobis drives supply chain excellence with Zebra Mobis manages the supply chain for automobile industry heavyweights Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors. The company

dispatches 6000 – 7000 line items daily, an average of 600 parts per hour.

When dated technology threatened the efficiency of its Australian distribution network, Mobis looked at voice solutions in the market with the goal to move to a multimodal voice solution.

With 59 million Hyundai and Kia vehicles on the road worldwide, and the complexities of after sales parts supply management chain, Mobis needed a sophisticated warehouse solution - one that could efficiently track stock, pick orders and increase its distribution volume and the bottom line.

The challenge was to refresh Mobis’ equipment and adopt a modernised solution complementary to its custom warehouse management system, while solving the issue of Microsoft ‘end-of-life’ support for Windows embedded handheld devices.

The solution: A pilot test using Zebra’s Voice Directed Picking (VDP) solution in a section within the warehouse. The results delivered a 15 per cent productivity increase, and an additional 39 per cent reduction in errors compared to voice-only solutions.

Mobis opted to go with Zebra’s multi-modal solution: Zebra WT6000 wearable mobile computer with ring scanner running on Ivanti Velocity. This includes a future VDP component, Ivanti Speakeasy, therefore accommodating all of Mobis’ requirements from company-wide IT upgrades, budgets, platform and specific operational needs.

Darren Bowley, Warehouse Operations Manager at Mobis Australia said, “We needed a solution that would help increase productivity while seamlessly integrating with our warehouse management system. The rugged, multitouch capacitive display on the WT6000 makes it easy for our workers across the supply chain to read and enter data, even while wearing work gloves. " “The take up of the new technology has been rapid and decisive. Operators only need a day to become thoroughly familiar with the new devices. We are already seeing the benefits from the initial roll-out with staff already eager to know when they were going to get theirs,” added Bowley.

The Android platform is supported by Zebra’s Lifeguard program and will ensure the ongoing security and integrity of the solution. Most importantly, Mobis can run different applications on the mobile system and enjoy the freedom 14

to innovate as needed, taking its operational excellence to the next level.

The Future: Improved productivity, accuracy, staff satisfaction and room to innovate The WT6000 wearable computer with the Bluetooth ring scanner and speech-directed solution will ultimately allow Mobis to streamline its entire picking process and increase productivity.

Without sacrificing accuracy, the system when deployed will allow Mobis to find an item, provide immediate verification and instantly update inventory. Warehouse staff will also be able to move from voice command to barcode scanning to touchscreen input as required, shaving precious time from the validation process and ensuring pick accuracy.

Brian Lynn - WA State President I hope 2020’s started brightly for you and your organisation. There have certainly been a considerable number of logistical challenges recently, whether due to natural disaster, human health or technology issues. Over here in the West these can have an even greater impact as there are only a limited number of major supply lines into the state. The need for you and your organisation to have compassion and a resilient back up plan has never been greater.

For the Association 2020 is another year of great possibility. We have a number of site visits in the pipeline and look forward to renewing and strengthening our relationships with local businesses and educational institutions, as well as leveraging the partnerships that the Association has with its many National Partners.

The year started with a kind invitation from our partner association ASCI to its first breakfast seminar of 2020; a seminar entitled ‘The State of Supply Chain Management in Australia’.

After a summary from Ryan Lanzon of Michael Page, our generous hosts, of employment prospects in the industry in Western Australia in 2020 (including a flurry of activity in the oil and gas sector), the results of a survey of Australian supply chain industry leaders were presented to a full house of eager listeners.

Industry performance was scored against a number of key attributes, with scores being lower than expected for collaboration, risk management and outsourcing and higher for sustainability and compliance and regulation. The audience shared its own experiences in these areas and healthy debate ensued. All in all a

stimulating start to the year.

Queensland Division Mark Healing - QLD State President New Year has come and gone and we start the new decade with renewed vigour.

Our Christmas Hamper packing was a great way to end the year with over $1,000,000 in product collectively given to Foodbank since we kicked it off all those years ago. Over 240 attendees this year!!

Had a great email from an ex Committee member Ken Newton on how much he enjoyed mentoring a younger person and how much the Mentee and the Mentor enjoyed and both received a very positive result. We hope to develop our Mentoring program this year so stay tuned as this is a very important aspect that the SCLAA believe can really help the industry and more importantly our colleagues within it.

Early in the New Year Matt Guthrie organised a meeting with Asahi Beverages to discuss a site visit. I accompanied him and had a sneak peek of their Distribution Centre .

Matt is arranging the site visit for the 17 th of March. If you want to see a warehouse of the future you have to see this place.

2019 Queensland Hamper Packing for Foodbank

Our Committee has been strengthened by Jason Mann and Heather Mattes joining in the later part of last year. Yet to find positions or titles for them as yet as they are still settling in.

Speaking of Committee members , our Vice president George Hodgson (whose day job is with the Royal Australian Air Force) was seconded to help out in the Prime Minister's Office National Bushfire Recovery Agency based in Canberra. While we miss his input at Committee level I am sure he is utilising his Logistics skills to benefit others.

The Qld Committee and the broader Association are right behind him.

Speaking of the bushfires, My wife and I were scratching our heads on how we could help our rural neighbours who had been effected by bushfire. Over the Australia Day long weekend we visited the townships of Warwick, Stanthorpe and a little spot called Queen Mary Falls in S.E Queensland.

Spent sometime visiting and spending some money in their community. They were very appreciative of the patronage .

We noticed others doing the same thing as us. So if you can, try and visit an effected rural area and buy something that could assist in re energising their economy. Every little bit helps . Makes you feel great as well!!

The site visit to the XXXX Brewery held on 25 February, was very interesting and throughly enjoyed by all attendees.

We were fortunate to have a scheduler/ planner to speak to attendees and answer the large number of questions raised.

The importance of Mentoring and knowledge sharing The SCLAA, over the years, have successfully held a mentoring program to offer support and knowledge sharing to those members that were interested in participating. I have been privileged to participate in this program as a mentor, and in true fashion, learnt as much from the participant as what I shared.

A good mentor program is beneficial to both the mentee and the mentor, as the program tends to provide insight, awareness and professional growth to all involved.

As an example, I would like to share the following mentoring story.

In 2018 I was approached by a colleague and asked if I was interested in providing mentoring to this person’s son. I said yes with the expectation that person was operating in the Supply Chain industry already, imagine my surprise when I discover that the person was operating in an aeronautical maintenance field as an enlisted member of the Royal Australian Air Force and had desires on becoming a pilot, that’s in the realm of Logistics Operations, isn’t it?

We commenced the relationship, and in true fashion, made an immediate connection and set the ground rules, meeting schedule and expectations and desired outcomes. We met face to face on a monthly basis and had bi-monthly calls.

In this instance, the participant was a young man who is very motivated and had a clear picture of where he wants to

go and what he wants to achieve. As life sometimes does, a curve ball was thrown. He was a little disappointed when he was forced to revise his plans, due to no courses or vacancies were available within the foreseeable future. After a small amount of soul searching and some guidance, the young man decided to change direction slightly, still to remain as Aircrew, but as a Load Master! This is even further ingrained in Logistics Operations, much to his Dad’s happiness…

With dedication and focus, in late 2019, he successfully navigated the application processes and passed the selection board and has now commenced the required training. He has been sent to the relevant departments and schools for training and is loving every minute of it.

During this process, I learned a lot from this dedicated young man. He held his focus, maintained his passion and simply adapted and overcame obstacles that were presented. He was very open to insight and guidance and was never afraid to ask questions.

As stated, the SCLAA has a great mentor program, and has seen numerous successes and witnessed its participants grow both personally and professionally. I am a firm believer that the skills and experiences that can and are shared with personnel wanting to enter our industry, or even assisting those already in the industry, can only benefit our industry.

I joined SCLAA as a logistics and supply chain student as I was interested in attending supply chain conferences and events. Also, to network and meet others who are passionate about supply chain management. Benefits are instant information by email when events are occurring, staying up to date with latest news and current technology. At the event held by Rob O’Byrne in October I met some other students and professionals and also discussed 7 ways to save costs in the supply chain. The container event was very interesting, we were picked by bus and taken to the container facility and see the latest technology used in containers.

How long have you been in the industry? What are your areas of expertise?

I have been in the industry for almost 2 years, and recently graduated in November of 2019. Areas I’m interested in are inventory management, last mile delivery and customer service.

What is current job role and what are your responsibilities?

In my studies we focused on managing suppliers, chain of responsibility, transport logistics and designing warehouse in accordance with safety measures and regulations. I am keen to become an expert in managing suppliers and transport logistics.

Currently I recently graduated and received my degree in logistics and supply chain in November 2019. I intend to do graduate study in 2020 and focus on inventory management and supplier relationships.

Stephen Lakey - VIC/TAS State President I remember just over 11 years ago when I joined my place of work, Gamma Solutions, that along with the usual items – laptop, phone & keys to the front door, I was given a membership to the SCLAA. I could never have imagined that the organisation would be such a big part of my life 11 years on.

2019 End of Year Presentations

We wrapped up a very successful 2019 with our Christmas party and mentoring awards night at the amazing Starward Distillery. It was a very well attended night with great conversations & inspiring presentations as we reflected on the year.

By all accounts 2020 is off to a flying start with the leadership team bursting with enthusiasm and new ideas

for the year ahead. Our first committee meeting of the year was held in January where we spoke about the Servant Leadership style of leadership. We are servant leaders at SCLAA and we strive to always have the members and the value of the SCLAA membership at the forefront of our minds in all our planning and activities.

The calendar is filling quickly with breakfast talks, site tours, thought leadership & networking events. During March we will be holding our first members only MEGA event incorporating a site tour, Industry expert presentations / panel discussion & networking event all in one. Keep an eye out - this one is not to be missed and will no doubt book out fast.

Also of note our mentoring program will commence in June and is a great way for people entering the industry to be alligned with an experienced supply chain & logistics professional to provide guidance and advice. I am very excited about this program as I know the difference it can make to both the mentee and the mentor. My experience as a mentor in several organisations has been overwealming posititve. While some prefer a finite mentoring relationship – there is certainly nothing wrong with that - I am so proud to count some of my former mentees as close personal friends many years after the official program ended. It has been wonderful to hear about their successes and their achievements as they

New SCLAA Members Nesli Yontem, Logistics Administrator/Expeditor, Trelleborg Marine Systems Australia Pty Ltd. VIC/TAS Division Why did you join the SCLAA? What benefits do you believe the SCLAA offers all their members?

Competitive advantage is all about keeping up with the pace of today’s rapidly changing world. To be able to achieve this, having a deeper understanding of industry trends along with a theoretical knowledge is a must. I believe I can broaden my horizons by joining SCLAA since the association has a lot to offer me for my professional development. I am already doing my best to have the theoretical knowledge. However, an environment which I can share my ideas, knowledges and meet professionals from the industry to learn about their experiences is very limited in my personal life. In this sense, SCLAA Industry Networking Events, industry conferences and summits will help me to build a strong background and be more beneficial for my company.

How long have you been in the industry? What are your areas of expertise?

My story begins in 2016. I’ve started to work in the industry as a customs agent in a freight forwarder which provides worldwide logistics and freight services. I’ve gained significant experience regarding 3PL, import and export customs along with customer relationship management.

While I was working, I decided to enrich myself through further education. That's how I began my master's degree in Foreign Trade & Foreign Exchange. I also started to work in a manufacturing company. In this job, I conducted the export operations from the beginning to the end. This included taking the orders, preparing the required documents, pricing, communicating with the customers until the goods reached them. I also worked with all the departments including planning, manufacturing, quality control, accounting and finance. Additionally, I specialized in preparing reports for senior management by using the related ERP system.

I strongly believe that work practices should be supported by theoretical knowledge, otherwise routine mistakes will continue to happen. I finished my master's degree, which I ranked top of my program. With my foreign language skills in English and French, my communication abilities and hardworking character, I proved I could conduct more global operations. This is the main reason which underpins my desire for further education in Supply Chain and Logistics Management in RMIT.

What is current job role and what are your responsibilities?

After I moved to Australia to do my master’s in supply chain and logistics, I’ve decided to find an industry related job.

Now, I am working in Trelleborg Marine Systems Australia as a logistics administrator. I am part of a great team in here.

My major responsibilities are: • Shipment planning and scheduling • Assisting Project Managers to prepare all shipping documentation including: • Packing list, shipping invoice, Certificate of origin, documents required by Letter of Credits, • Liaising with external packaging company and internal production to arrange crates and packaging schedules.

• Organizing transportation of outward goods and liaising with freight forwarder to arrange and execute the shipments.

• Expediting shipments in alignment with project priorities.

• Controlling and administration of shipping documentation and corresponding ERP system activities.

NSW Division Why did you join the SCLAA? What benefits do you believe the SCLAA offers all their members?

Working in the Logistics Industry for the past decade, I have had the chance to review multiple trade organization and the benefits they could provide to their members. SCLAA has always stood out as one of the most active, accountable and highly regarded associations, so when reviewing which organizations to join for 2020, it was easy to align with SCLAA and the benefits on offer. Benefits such as regular events, networking opportunities, market insights and potential education opportunities. I was able to attend the QLD Networking event held on the 17th October in Brisbane and although my visit was brief due to an urgent work matter pulling me away early, I was impressed by the community aspect and atmosphere. Also, when attending the NSW addition of Android in the Supply Chain hosted at the Google offices in Pyrmont, I was impressed by the setup and professionalism of the event. I’m looking forward to attending more fun and insightful events in the future.

How long have you been in the industry? What are your areas of expertise?

I’ve been working in the industry for over a decade, being fortunate to work with multiple Freight Forwarders, one of the largest Shipping Lines and more recently moving into the world of Technology designed to support the greater logistics environment. Originally, I was an aspiring Customs Broker, however once completing my studies I came to the realisation that the ‘people’ side of the business appealed to me more. I made a natural progression into Account Management with the mindset that every operation was unique with circumstances I could learn from for the future benefit of my customers. Eventually I became proficient in Sales through working closely with my customer’s forecasts, knowledge of market trends and finding mutually beneficial agreements for long-term growth. I really do thrive on discussing a customer’s roadmap of where they would like to take their operation and then partnering on that goal.

Providing a voice inside my organization is not a common inclusion for a salesperson, but I believe it is fundamental to the success of both our ambitions.

I have an extensive knowledge of Supply Chain operations, Customs Declaration requirement, Transportation Management, Process Improvement with integration and implementation along with a consistent focus on how technological innovations can help fix industry problems or streamline current processes.

What is current job role and what are your responsibilities?

My current role is Sales Executive with Descartes, responsible for commercial interests throughout the Australian and New Zealand markets. However, my account base extends out to South-East Asia and South Africa. Descartes Systems Group has been present in the region for several decades, partnering with some of the largest organisation for an array of Logistics-Intensive requirement. Global Trade Content My current focus is on Global Trade Content, as this has been a severely underutilised component of the industry within the ANZ market. Strategies involving digital goods classification, denied party screening, compliance requirements and trade data analysis might be on the minds of a small number of industry decision makers. But we are seeing across North America and Europe that these competitive advantages are playing a major part in corporations realising their efficiency, compliance and growth commitments.

Christoph oversees the Product Management of innovative location-based applications for urban fleets building on the HERE Open Location Platform.

National Khapra Beetle Action Plan The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment has opened the ‘Have Your Say’ forum for comment on the draft National Khapra Beetle Action Plan.

About the Plan: The National Khapra Beetle Action Plan will provide a national approach to managing the threat of khapra beetle entering Australia and establishing. Priority areas in the plan identify actions to build national capability to prevent, prepare for, and respond to the threat of khapra beetle.

The Khapra beetle (Trogoderma granarium) is a serious pest of stored grain and dry foodstuffs. Massive populations build up swiftly, causing significant losses to produce which can be almost completely destroyed. Stored products also become contaminated with beetles, cast skins and hairs from larvae, which can be a human health risk.

This beetle pest is not present in Australia and poses a major threat to Australia’s grains, rice and nut industries through production losses and potential impacts on international trade. Khapra beetle is Australia’s number two National Priority Plant Pest (2019) and is a High Priority Pest for the grains, nut and rice industries.

A draft National Khapra Beetle Action Plan has been developed by the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, in partnership with industry, state and territory government. The Plant Health Committee will oversee implementation of the plan with support from the department.

Laurence Jones TT Club Mutual Insurance Laurence Jones is a qualified engineer with over 40 years experience. His skill areas include general management, operations, maintenance, design, construction, mechanical, electrical and civil engineering, industrial relations, safety, environment, risk assessment and auditing. He joined the TT Club in December 2006 as Director Global Risk Assessment. His role in the TT Club covers internal advice and support in underwriting decisions and claims assessment, and externally he works proactively with clients and industry to identify areas where risks may be reduced.
