SCLAA National Chairman - Amanda O'Brien

Amanda O'Brien is the Chairman of the SCLAA. Amanda is a Transport & Logistics Professional and the CEO and Managing Director of Australian Worldwide Logistics Pty Ltd trading as Xtreme Freight with head office based in Melbourne.

There are many changes and developments that have transpired within the Supply Chain in 2019, however it is important at this time to concentrate on issues that affect all of us; discrimination, multiplicity and our humanity.

In all these facets of life they are part of the human supply chain, the all-important link between people.

People make up our networks! In the case of the tragic Christchurch mosque massacre that claimed 50 lives, it is a stark reminder of how the fabric of our society relies on people, and multiple streams of people, working together and encompassing our differences even more than our similarities.

As our supply chains become more complex and evolved, we endeavour to solve challenges not experienced before and we need to evolve not just with technological automation, increasing efficiencies and juggling the regulatory and economic changes in our society, but as people we also need to evolve and expand our horizons with new ways of thinking and processing these differences to tackle the challenges before us.

It is important that we acknowledge how in the midst of tragedy, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s leadership, compassion, acceptance of differences and zero tolerance for racism or discrimination of any kind, were able to bring together not only the country but the entire As in life our supply chains contain many moving parts but we have to align all the complexity in different streams to complete the utopian end to end supply chain circle, just as we strive for our own utopian circle in life.

This leads on to cultural diversity and as the SCLAA understand how important our networks in the global market-place are, it is timely that we will progress these business relationships with our upcoming Trade Visit to China. Our reliance on all our trading partners and developing these ties is critical to our economic security.

Our teams understand the importance of this cultural diversity which has resulted in alliances with networks in the supply chain arena from not only China but all over the world.

Our colleagues in Hong Kong and Australia signed a Free Trade Agreement and Investment Agreement in March which covered trade in goods, trade in services, investment, intellectual property, government procurement, competition and other related areas. The Agreements were signed 2

by Hong Kong’s Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Edward Yau, and the Australian Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Mr Simon Birmingham in Sydney, Australia.

On the economic front, the Federal budget returned Australia to surplus, local and global unemployment is lower and domestically we’re seeing big infrastructure and mining projects. On the downside, the European economy is slowing, and Brexit’s full impact remains a matter of speculation. Therefore it will be interesting to see how the tax cuts for business and individuals stimulate the economy.

The SCLAA International Women’s Day Breakfast held at Ryne Restaurant in North Fitzroy on the 8th March was a great success. Our guest speaker was Marie-Claire Ross, who sits on the SME Committee for the Australian Institute of Company Directors, is a fellow of the CEO Institute and the Founder and Chief Corporate Catalyst at Trustologie.

Marie-Claire gave an inspiring speech focused on the business case for trust, how to gauge low trust indicators that sabotage organisations and teams and the six essential building blocks for trust. The speech highlighted that trust is essential and without trust, you generate a dysfunctional organisation and team.

Two upcoming events for which you should make sure you ‘Save the Date’ are the SCLAA Women in Logistics Luncheon in Melbourne on 30 August and the 59th Australian Supply Chain and Logistics Awards Gala Dinner on 22 November

2019 ASCL Award Categories ASCL Industry Excellence Award

ASCL Supply Chain Management Award

This Award recognises and acknowledges outstanding achievements and contribution by an individual currently engaged across the supply chain industr y. Persons nominated for this most prestigious award will be leaders and will have made significant change to the way a supply chain is managed and improved either academically, physically or technologically. Originally awarded in 1987 and dedicated to Mike Munns, FAIMM, this award remains a cornerstone of SCLAA’s commitment to recognising and promoting the importance of the supply chain industry and its people to continuously improving organisational strength and growth.

Supply Chain Management (SCM) is the oversight of materials, information, and finances as they move in a process from supplier to manufacturer to wholesaler to retailer to consumer. This award recognises an organisation that can demonstrate significant achievement within a section or across their entire supply chain. Nominees should be able to clearly state the design and achieved results of the project or process that was envisaged and then implemented. The trophy was first awarded in 1984 and is dedicated to Doug Beattie.

Criteria

The criteria for this award is not limited by industry as all industries have a supply chain. Manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, and materials or resource service industries can and do play a vital role in supply chain deliverables.

Any person nominated with demonstrable achievement that has provided change, improvement, education, support, development, implementation or significant results that has bettered their own or general supply chains. Limited to Australian citizens working technologically, academically or physically across the supply chain industry. The judges will look at the sustainability and national and/or international implications of the demonstrated achievements.

ASCL Future Leaders Award The purpose of this award is to provide incentive and recognition to young supply chain professionals who are both currently working in and wish to continue their career path. Nominees for this award should be able to demonstrate their passion and commitment to taking the supply chain toward tomorrow. The SCLAA wishes to showcase finalists and provide impetus to continue to attract the brightest to the industry. First awarded in 2009 and dedicated to Vince Aisthorpe.

Criteria: Any person under the age of 30 that has shown proven committeemen to learn and gain knowledge and has applied their achieved skills to deliver improvements within their supply chain field. Particular attention will be given by the judges where nominees have been encouraged and able to use new techniques, technology or developed new processes.

ASCL Training, Education & Development Award Training, education and development remains a vital part of allowing knowledge to be utilised for new ideas and supply chain improvements to be discovered and then implemented This award will be presented to a company that can best demonstrate their committeemen, application and results of providing training, education and development of their people. The trophy was first awarded in 2002 and is dedicated to the late Professor Peter Gilmour.

Criteria Any company nominated for this award must be directly involved within the supply chain industry. The demonstrated development, training and education of person or persons employed by the nominated company is a mandatory requirement to be considered for this award. The judges will pay particular attention to where the supplied training, education and development has led to improvements achieved for both the company and the individual.

2019 ASCL Award Categories ASCL Information Technology and Management Award Information remains the most important requirement of any supply chain. Information technology is where the majority of supply chain improvements has been made. Nominees for this award will demonstrate where their use of existing or new technology has provided significant improvements to their management of information and/or their supply chain processes. The trophy was first awarded in 1994 and is dedicated to the late Len Smith FAIMM.

Criteria The judges will be looking for nominees that can provide reasonable detail in the determined area where the technology was correctly applied and what - if any - obstacles were discovered and how they were overcome to achieve the information improvement. The technology can be physical, logical, or cloud based applications and the technology is not limited to just pure information although it is expected that information of some sort would be a beneficiary.

ASCL International Supply Chain Award Recognising that Supply Chains know no boundaries, the ASCLA International Supply Chain Award is given to a Company, Association or an Individual that may operate internationally and are able demonstrate their capability, commitment and achievements across any spectrum of the sciences, practices, disciplines or efforts to promote and improve the knowledge and acceptance of the importance of the supply chain

Criteria The issue of this award is not determined from any specific or objective criteria. It is determined to provide evidence, publicity and reciprocity against achieving closer relationships and increased recognition of the supply chain as a global industry.

Judging will be limited to 3 judges, not necessarily drawn from the standard judging panel but drawn from persons considered suitable and capable of determining a fitting recipient.

ASCL Environmental Excellence Award The ASCL Environmental Excellence Award recognises corporate leadership contributing to the solution of environmental sustainability within our industry through performance and action. The trophy was first awarded in 1966 and is dedicated to Mr Ken Pike.

Criteria The development or delivery of a service or initiative that significantly contributes to the solution of sustainability through a reduction in energy, materials and or natural resources.

Describe the application and applicability to the industry thereby promoting best practice. Describe how the initiative has raised the level of awareness of the environment and sustainability within the organisation.

Straight Talking - David Doherty OAM What do you stand for?

I don’t mean that rhetoric you present to suit the circumstances. I mean the things you will really stand up for regardless of the consequences.

Are you even cognizant of the principles you hold so dear that you will not ever neglect them? Have you encountered people in your life experiences that you trust to stand with you on an important issue when the chips are down? Are there people who trust you to stand with them when needed?

I am fearful that our democratic societies have lost the courage of prior generations to “do the right things and do those things right”. Communities must be the backbone of any proper society. How does your community stack up? The ongoing prosperity and wellbeing of communities depends on the selfless sharing of responsibilities and sharing of the value created.

Sounds like the original concepts for Supply Chains! Supply Chain Communities are the backbone of trade and commerce.

Governments at the moment fail all the above tests. Time for politicians, and their aides (who often are able to exercise undue influence) to reassess their purpose and their processes to ensure communities prosper.

I just read a book I purchased at the Book Grocers ($7.00 per book!). It is titled, “Harry’s Last Stand”. The author (Harry Leslie Smith) is ninetyone years old. Note the following quote.

“I am not a politician or an economist.

I don’t have a degree from Oxbridgeand I am sure those who do will be able to pick holes in what I say. But I 10

have lived through nearly a hundred years of history. I have felt the sting of poverty, as well as the sweetness of success, and I don’t want to see everything we’ve worked for fall apart. As one of the last remaining survivors of the Great Depression and the Second World War, I will not go gently into that goodnight. I want to tell you what the world looks like through my eyes so that you can help to change it. The sorry mess Britain and America is mired in today was sown by a generation of politicians on both left and right who ignored 20th century history. Whether it was done from hubris, incompetence or greed, the damage to today’s society has been done and we may have sacrificed another generation to economic stagnation.”

Harry Smith is an articulate and courageous man who has experienced it all. Read his book. It will be a learning experience.

Speaking of learning experiences, I have recently completed a survey on Supply Chain Knowledge Building.

Leads me to wonder how the Supply Chain Profession is keeping up their knowledge and education. Do the Professional and/or Industry Associations provide relevant effective research and knowledge sharing? Do education and training institutions meet the needs of aspiring Supply Chain participants. Are employers getting the skills they need to build a future in the changing world?

Of course, I am Life Member of SCLAA so am a bit biased in saying the work hard to engage the broad spectrum of Supply Chain and Logistics participants.

However, every day I receive countless publications, bulletins, conference

invitations, and such. In many cases I have no idea if the source is reliable or if the information is fact based or issued for the purpose of revenue raising. It is a bit like the Donald Trump view on “fake news”. I endeavour to stay with trusted providers with verifiable data and information sources. Less may well be more in this era of easy communication. Declutter the digital plethora and unsubscribe often!

I have just noticed that a Federal Election has been called for 18 May. The results will probably be known before you read this Straight Talk. I am very anxious for the next generations of Australians of a unless those forming government decide to pursue their proper purpose, stand up for communities and ensure their prosperity and wellbeing, eliminate snouts in troughs, and prioritise people in every decision. Can any of the candidates stand up for those things?

Supply Chain Risk is continuing to evolve given the state of global trade manoeuvring, increasing tensions and future technologies (eg. AI). It is worth the effort to invest in studying and building ongoing knowledge in Supply Chain Risk Management.

Queesland Division Mark Healing - QLD State President The year is moving along. We all recognize how busy we are in our individual Work and Home lives so attendance to and involvement with our events are greatly appreciated. February saw another well

attended presentation by Dr Martin Christopher at the Southbank Campus of the Griffith University.

This shared event with the University allows students and Industry to meet and learn of happenings in a Supply Chain other than their own.

March was when we hosted a networking evening at a Bavarian beer establishment right on the shore of the Brisbane River in the CBD of Brisbane. We all had a great night of social interaction. Supply Chain is made up of people and relationships and this evening allowed each of us to develop both.

Earlier in the year the Qld Committee met and developed a “Project on a Page�. A one page document that encapsulates where we want to go, what we want to achieve and when we want to meet. Funny we want to schedule our year? I wonder if it is an occupational habit being Logisticians? We will have it up on the SCLAA Website soon so you can see where and what we are up to.

In the meantime, make sure you watch your LinkedIn and Facebook feeds and get in early for our next event. We have just had confirmation of our Visit to Amberley Air force base to tour the massive C17 aircraft and the logistics that surround them. This will be on the 8 th of May . We also have some presentations coming up in the next few months so stay tuned and we should be talking to you at one of these events.

ACT/SNSW Division discovers that there’s the later processing stages to confirm that there are no antibiotics present. more to milk than just cows.

SCLAA ACT/SNSW Division attended a site visit at Capitol Chilled Foods Australia (CCFA), the home of Canberra Milk, in late March. The visit was well attended by a number of members and guests, who were treated to a presentation of the many interesting facts explaining where the bottle of milk in our refrigerators comes from, and how it is processed, packaged and distributed (in its many varied forms).

The visit started early with a BBQ breakfast followed by a detailed presentation by Nick Hutchin, the Canberra Logistics Director for CCFA, and then a walk-through of the facility. The presentation highlighted that CCFA is a joint venture company between Lion Dairy & Drinks and Bega Cheese Ltd, and is the only dairy processor situated in the Australian Capital Territory.

CCFA has been processing fresh Canberra Milk and related dairy products from their fully accredited processing plant (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point - HACCP) since 1971.

They have a vast network of refrigerated vehicles that distribute fresh white milk, milk based beverages, along with other chilled food and beverage products, throughout the ACT and surrounding regions. In addition to Canberra Milk and Dairy Farmers products, CCFA distribute other leading Australian brands such as Bega, DARE, Moove, Yoplait, King Island, Tasmanian Heritage, Vitasoy, Berri and Daily Juice.

We were able to see how the milk processing and packaging was performed, from the loading and cleaning of the bottles, labelling, filling, capping and then the final products being crated and stacked for distribution.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get the recipe for the range of flavoured milks processed in the plant! Once received in the cool rooms, a normal pick & pack operation is undertaken. The cool room is at a cool 1 to 4 Degrees Celsius, which, as Nick joked, is warmer inside than out during the Canberra winters!

Being a perishable commodity, milk must always be processed in a timely manner – the timeframe from collection at the dairy, through transport, to the processing facility for bottling, packaging and distribution to the end customer is typically a 24-48 hour turnaround.

The SCLAA ACT/SNSW Division wish to extend a warm thank you to Nick and Carol Corless, the site HACCP and Hygiene Leader, for providing a valuable and informative tour of the facility.

CCFA directly supply to all ACT commercial customers with their contracted fleet of Canberra Milk Drivers, and through Franchise Owner Partners in the NSW South Coast and Riverina regions, all of whom maintain the HACCP accredited cold chain compliance standards. As emphasised by Nick, CCFA is committed to processing, producing and distributing products of premium quality.

CCFA directly employs approximately some 70 people.

After the breakfast and presentation, we were suited up with coats and hair nets (and for those with facial hair, a “face net”) for our tour through the facility. Due to hygiene and security issues, we were unable to take photos within the production areas - hygiene is an extremely important factor for CCFA to ensure healthy products are produced for the public.

We began the tour at the Loading Bay where the trucks first unload the milk. As the milk is being unloaded, an initial test is undertaken to check for the presence of antibiotics.

If any are detected at that stage, the unloading is stopped.

Focus on a Committee Member ACT-SNSW Division - Mike Steele When TCS made the decision in late 2017 to relocate their operation from Canberra back to Sydney, Tony accepted the offer of a position at National Mailing and Marketing (NMM), in the role of Warehouse Operations manager. Tony has exceptional knowledge of most operational aspects of the supply chain and distribution industry, particularly relating to quality and risk, warehouse management systems and overall logistics management.

While with the Toll Group, Tony was also part of the initial team that formed the ACT/SNSW Division of the SCLAA back in 2009, under the guidance of Allan Jones and PJ Gould. He is now a welcome addition to the NMM Corporate membership.

Tony comes from an IT Project Implementation/ Management background and has a vast knowledge of information delivery platforms and project management tools. Over the last 10 years as a Senior Business Manager, he has also managed most Key Result Areas within this industry, which included responsibility and accountability for Contract Management, Business Strategy and Capability, Growth and Innovation, Financial and P&L Management, Account and Contract Management, Workplace Health & Safety, and Risk Management

One of Tony’s key strengths to achieve these key results areas is his concise and considerate communications, as well as being a great facilitator who can join groups of people together to achieve best overall outcomes.

TONY NICHOLS (Warehouse Operations Manager, National Mailing & Marketing, Canberra) Tony has over 30 years’ experience working in the Warehousing, Transport and Logistics sector, the majority of which was with David’s Holding and the Toll Group. For the past 10 years, he has held a number of senior Business Management roles, most recently as the Canberra Branch Manager of Toll Customised Solutions (TCS), now Toll Global Logistics.

TCS in Canberra was a contract distribution warehouse with a customer base made up of predominately Commonwealth Government agencies in the Information Management space. These included major agencies such the Human Services portfolio of Centrelink, Medicare and the Child Support Agency, the Australian Taxation Office and Defence Force agencies. He also managed many other independent campaigns such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2016 Census (distribution and retrieval of printed census forms) and distributions relating to a number of federal elections for the Australian Electoral Commission.

Brian Lynn - WA State President It’s astonishing how fast 2019 is flashing by!

We hope it’s as dynamic for you as it is for us!

By the time that you read this the SCLAA WA will have participated in its first university-related event of 2019.

The association has been invited to provide a panellist in early April for a round table discussion at Edith Cowan University of Supply Chain Sustainability, in front of an audience of Supply Chain and Logistics students.

This invitation is a further strengthening of the Association’s links with WA educational institutions, through its Future Leaders Group.

Hot on the heels of the ECU event will be a lunchtime presentation at Curtin University on 8th May by Tegan Case, winner of the Young Professional Award at the 2018 West Australian Transport, Supply Chain and Logistics Awards. Tegan, a Resource Planner with Shell, and a highly motivated young achiever will describe how she has forged a career in the industry, and her experiences attending the “Supply Chains Driving Strategic Advantage” conference at MIT; her chosen prize destination.

The 20th Peter Smith Memorial Golf Day date is already locked in for October 25th at Gosnells. This very popular day is excellent for networking, promoting your business and catching up with old colleagues, and is always expertly organised by Dan Di Stasio. As a precursor to the October Golf Day, the SCLAA also has teams participating in the upcoming Kwinana Pro-Am. All of the above will provide great opportunities for you to meet like-minded professionals and to share information on how to overcome your day-to-day business challenges.

Before all of this, in late February Mike Wragg, State President of the SCLAA South Australia and Northern Territory presented to an evening gathering on Chain of Responsibility, highlighting the steps necessary to ensure organisational compliance and the variations in legislation between Australian states. His thoughts were well received by an audience of thirty and some interesting discussion followed. The SCLAA is very grateful to Michael Page, and particularly Ryan Lanzon, Associate Director, who spoke briefly about current job market trends.

NSW Division Qld Division Cathy-Anne Jones - NSW State President My name is Cathy-Anne Jones, I am honoured to be recently nominated and elected as the President of the SCLAA NSW chapter. I would like to continue the momentum, running more events, building partnerships and increasing members. I look forward to meeting you throughout the year and beyond.

After a 20-year career in recruitment, with some time spent in the training, apprenticeship and WHS industries, I developed a strong interest in the complexity and rapidly changing nature of Supply Chain functions across so many industries. I have started Supply Chain People recruitment consultancy in 2019 and enjoy finding the right fit for companies. I continue to enjoy networking and learning more and more about different structures and functions within our industry.

It was a great turnout at Macquarie Park Innovation Centre – plenty of networking and a nice breakfast put on by our National Partner, Zebra Technologies. At the beginning of April, SCLAA attended a night hosted by Geodis covering: 1) Tax implications for our industry; 2) An update on Modern Slavery Law and how it is continually impacting the Supply Chain; and 3) The Institute of Drone Technology also delivered an interesting discussion and Q&A around the applications of drone technology in warehousing and logistics.

BLUM Site Visit - 30 April 2019 At the end of the month, April 30, Swisslog are hosting a site tour for our members at Blum. Many people may see their warehouse driving south down the M7 towards Liverpool.

Future of the Supply Chain Workforce – Closing the skills gap – we are expecting more than 60 people and have organised a venue in Western Sydney with 4 key Speakers – the event is aimed at companies who are concerned about skills shortages and want insight and solutions, and to individuals who may wish to develop their careers and how to assess what will be needed in the future. The speakers will offer data insights into the current state of the workforce, the impact of technologies on the changing workforce and some of the solutions that are being put into place. SCLAA will also have an opportunity to promote the Skills Gap Analysis tool which is of benefit to individual and company members. Should be a great event and all members are welcome to attend.

HI5 TO I4.0

Five reasons why Industry 4.0 will permit even small arehouses to adopt automation Many have written about the impact that Industry 4.0 will have on warehousing and distribution and why companies should embrace this fourth industrial revolution. But if you own or operate a small warehouse or distribution centre, you may be thinking, “How will Industry 4.0 help me?” or “Isn’t this only for big companies?”

Yet many of the benefits of I4.0 will extend to small operations.

I4.0 includes technologies like the Internet of Things (machines talking to machines), big data, artificial intelligence, machine learning, as well as collaborative robotics. And there are five very strong reasons why they will make automation a worthwhile investment for even smaller warehouse operations;

1. True Plug & Play Traditionally, automated material handling systems required a significant amount of project specific engineering, control coding and software. Conveyor systems, for example, often need specific PLC code to optimise behaviour, such as priorities at a merging point. These ‘traffic rules’ are different for each layout and also depend on the user’s exact processes.

The costs of customising, installing and commissioning a system do not have a linear relationship to size. While the overhead may be a small proportion for large systems, on smaller systems those costs could represent up to 40% of the total solution.

By combining IoT principles with artificial intelligence and machine learning, this problem can be overcome. Imagine that you will simply place conveyor elements (or any other automated equipment) on the floor. Each element will automatically identify itself to all others and ‘connect’ to its neighbours, allowing the system to map itself and understand how it looks.

Meanwhile, applying big data analytics to the current, still manual operation will provide an understanding of the warehouse user processes. This allows the establishment of a first, base-line logic for running the new automated system. Once the physical automated systems are placed and used, machine learning will quickly determine how to use the equipment better and set the right traffic rules to match the system’s layout and user processes.

All this means that no more project-specific coding of controls and software will be required, significantly reducing the overhead costs to a level where automation becomes compelling for small operations.

2. Smart systems can adapt to warehouses built for humans Most warehouses, and certainly small ones, have been designed to be operated by humans. They have rows of shelving and people with trolleys walking through them to collect orders. Until recently, implementing automation would require these processes to be completely replaced.

Automated systems, such as robots, used to require a very clearly defined environment that was free of unexpected interruptions.

And while a manual warehouse may look very organised, there are many small deviations that are easy for people to deal with; just imagine a larger product overhanging a few centimetres into the next storage location, or a worker leaving their trolley in the aisle for a few minutes to use the restroom.

Changing a warehouse like that is a big step that could easily cause disruptions and risk.

Yet a new generation of collaborative robots is emerging. These robots are not only safe to work alongside humans, but also use advanced sensors and artificial intelligence to adapt to changing circumstances.

Now companies can simply deploy one or two collaborative robots within their current operation. Humans can work alongside the robots, eliminating the need for drastic changes to the warehouse or the processes.

Over time, more robots can be added to gradually increase the level of automation.

3. Small companies don’t want to stay small Many of the small companies in the field of logistics plan to grow, sometimes very quickly. Most early stage e-commerce companies have big ambitions, but exactly how fast, or in what direction they will develop is uncertain. This means any automation will need to be flexible so the company can start small, but scale fast when growing.

New technology such as autonomous mobile robots are perfect for this scenario. You can start with only a few. Due to peer-to-peer communication and intelligent software these vehicles are easy to implement, providing payback even in small numbers. Still, when the time comes to expand, this is as easy as buying (or leasing) more vehicles, placing them in your warehouse and powering them up.

The new vehicles will identify themselves to the existing ones and the entire fleet will adapt and optimise itself to make best use of the new robot-colleagues.

Another example of easily designing for growth is the Hasbro distribution centre in Preston operated by Toll. The modular sorter and conveyor are easy to expand as the need for product picking and despatch grow. In the meantime, the operation benefits from reduced costs and can handle more retail fulfilment cartons that you would expect from a traditional style warehouse.

4. Smart distribution networks will help to keep warehouses small This may seem contradictory to the previous point, and indeed it applies to a different group of companies. E-commerce is pushing the boundaries of delivery times. Same day delivery is increasingly an expectation and offered by many companies in larger population areas. By default, this requires products to be stored close to consumers in areas where there is often little space to build a warehouse.

To help keep warehouses small and still keep service levels high, Industry 4.0-related science is being used. Predictive shipping is one example, where goods will be shipped from a central warehouse to a smaller urban warehouse even before you order it. This concept relies on big data to understand and accurately predict customer behaviour.

The other method is distributed order fulfillment. A specific product may be available within the customer’s area at any number of locations. These locations could be the seller’s urban warehouses, a third party warehouse, a store, or even awaiting pick-up at the home of a customer who wants to return it. By connecting all these sources in a real-time network, the most efficient source location for the product can be found. Again, big data and artificial intelligence will manage the complexity of this process, while blockchain technology will allow secure transfer of data and money between potentially competing providers.

5. Small companies are entrepreneurial – but may have limited cash Investing in automation requires a long-term vision, combined with an entrepreneurial approach. This is even more true when investing in new, groundbreaking technologies. This mindset is often found at small to medium size companies or founder-owned companies. Decision processes can be shorter, which can make it easier to realise a vision. This is why small start-ups are often at the forefront of adopting new technology.

Cash may be a challenge, and investing in automation typically requires serious capital investment. But here new technology may also help.

Traditional automated systems have been highly customised and demanding to install, remove or change. Uncertainty about the company’s future, linked to an asset with very little value outside of that company will lead to expensive financing.

‘Plug & Play’, self-learning and high flexibility also implies that it will be just as easy to re-use equipment somewhere else. This re-use capability will reduce financing risk, making it less expensive. It will also support different models such as rental or leasing.

Summary All of these observations show that the real growth in warehouse automation will not only be with traditional, large systems. While those systems will always be there and also become infinitely smarter, they will be fewer in quantity compared to the thousands of small warehouses that have historically been too small to automate.

Kyle Rogers - VIC/TAS State President Highlights This Issue SCLAA VIC/TAS kicked off the year with an impressive line-up across thought leadership, the breakfast series and site tours.

Blockchain Panel - 28th February

Our first Thought Leadership was a riveting exploration into Blockchain and the application for Supply Chain professionals.

Our four Blockchain panellists gave perspectives on the exciting applications of Blockchain technology from industry, academic and international trade perspectives. For International Women’s day we celebrated with a breakfast talk by Marie-Clair Ross where we learnt about six critical steps for leaders to build trust. We also had a wonderful breakfast talk by Conor O’Malley on leading with curiosity in the Supply Chain, where we learnt to improve our skills as leaders through the Moods Framework and the Promise Cycle. Lastly, we went to Australia Post’s Parcel Processing Facility in Sunshine West for our first site tour of the year.

To kickstart the year for VIC/TAS 2019’s members, SCLAA hosted the first Thought Leadership Series event: Blockchain Panel. Held at the Blockchain Centre in Docklands, located in the heart of Melbourne, four world-class industry practitioners brought informative practices and applications of blockchain technology to support the increasingly complex task of managing the supply chain of tomorrow. The panel consisted of Kiersten Jowett (RMIT), David Vinton (IBM), Josh Hyland (Austrade)and Steve Vallas (Blockchain Consultant.)

Blockchain technology aids in ensuring transparency, traceability and security. It was interesting to learn that such technology is applied in multiple sectors: inclusive of government organisations and the private sector. With an abundance of data and information at the touch of our

fingertips, blockchain technology aids in verifying the integrity of data and manages data more efficiently.

The first part of the talk was done in a workshop style where we discussed how moods effect our capacity to lead and communicate. Our first exercise was to close our eyes and spend 30 seconds to identify our own mood. Mr. O’Malley asked how we found the task and how often we took the time to perform this review. Many members candidly said it was harder than expected and we rarely take the time to identify our moods. Mr. O’Malley explained that mood identification was important because our moods predispose us to act and talk in certain ways.

On behalf of SCLAA, thank you to our four speakers who offered their time to educate and interact with the VIC/TAS supply chain community, adding values for our members and for those who attended this event.

A structure called the ‘Moods Framework’ was introduced.

When we are in a positive or accepting state, Mr. O’Malley called this ‘being above or below the line.’ Conversely, if we are in a negative or opposition state of mind, we are ‘below the line.’ We spent some time exploring the domain of uncertainty, because most of our professional lives involve a form of variability, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA.) We walked through an example of how a curious mood can keep us positive. If we allow our mood to drift to anxiety, disinterest or supercilious (Kyle Roger’s cracker word of the day for condescending), we become prone to opposition and negativity.

We did a brief review of some other domains such as ‘Possibilities’ where ambition counters resignation and ‘It is So’ where peace balances resentment.

As the clock marched closer to 9am, we pivoted to a framework called the Promise Cycle created by business strategist Fernando Flores. The goal of a promise cycle is to help organizations realize improvements in productivity by codifying and making effective requests at the core of business conversation. I.e. how can you get someone to do X for me by Y time subject to Z standards? Mr. O’Malley begun this topic by asking us to think through how many times we ask other people to do things every day. Most people agreed it was lots of requests. The promise cycle helps to create structure around requests. The performer is asked to create an offer for the request. Once the request is complete, the result is compared to the promise and appreciation or a performance review can take place.

Last mile delivery increases in importance with the continuing growth of e-commerce and participants were able to see firsthand the scale of operations required to support hundreds of thousands of parcels processed per day.

The site, at one and half times the MCG’s playing surface (over 30,000 sqm), houses nearly three kilometers of conveyor belts.

Both the Site Manager and Logistics Manager took time out to step the group through all the key operations for the handling, sortation and scanning processes. Automation was highly evident with parcels scanned inbound, including cubing and weighing, through the facility and outbound, providing operations and consumers supply chain visibility.

After those marvelous insights on a Wednesday morning, we left armed with some new tools for our everyday business interactions. Thanks to Mr. Jason O’Brien and Mr. Harrison Jose and all others committee members who made this breakfast talk possible.

I am a Consultant at Segen Consulting Pty Ltd., a recruitment firm specialising in Supply Chain, Manufacturing and Engineering Industries. My primary role involves sourcing talent for our clients related to the Supply Chain Industry.

Why did you join SCLAA? I was introduced to the SCLAA as an opportunity to develop my professional network and enrich my understanding of the Supply Chain industry. After attending a couple of the SCLAA’s thought leadership events I became interested in the organisation and found them to be a valuable source of information for industry-specific emerging technologies and practices.

Why did you choose supply chain?

I studied a Master of Law in Brazil as well as HR Management in Australia and I ended up working in the Supply Chain and manufacturing industries both here and abroad. I am currently recruiting talent for the Supply Chain industry.

I chose Supply Chain because I am interested in keeping up to date with Supply Chain trends, as well as the impact of automation across the value chain, the impact of global climate change on Supply Chains, the upskill sets for a future Supply Chain specialists and the legislation impacting the new business model.

What is the proudest moment of your career?

The proudest moment of my career was the transition from a successful legal career in Brazil, to a now successful career in recruitment in Australia. I moved to Australia without a high level of English skills and had to work extremely hard to build up the necessary language skills to be able to utilise my business skills again in a similar field.

What are your career aspirations?

My aspiration is to always keep learning! I would like to do a master’s in Human Resource Management focusing on Employment Relations as well as some specialized training in Supply Chain so that I can better understand the industry and better service my clients. I see myself running a corporate division or business unit myself one day.

In this role she works across the Industrial & Logistics sector clients to provide solution and advisory services. Christine Miller is a senior supply chain professional with 20+ years in international supply chain, logistics and operations developing and implementing business transformation solutions in Europe, Asia, N. Her experiences include supply chain solution design, procurement, large scale change programs, mergers and acquisitions, strategy development and program implementation.

Global Trade Outlook for 2019: Trade Wars, Biosecurity, Infrastructure Fees and Shipping Thursday 16th May So far into 2019, we have seen the impact of a major trade war, a disastrous BMSB season and further consolidation of shipping lines. There is also much change afoot at the Ports of Melbourne. Major stevedoring companies that operate at the Port have increased their infrastructure access fee by over 2,000 percent in the last two years. There is also a new Biosecurity Import Levy that will come into effect on 1 July 2019, across all Australian jurisdictions.

In the SCLAA’s second thought leadership series of the year, we have lined up three expert panellists to delve into what is happening at our ports and how it will affect your Supply Chain.
