Amanda O'Brien is the Chairman of the SCLAA. Amanda is a Transport & Logistics Professional and the CEO and Managing Director of Australian Worldwide Logistics Pty Ltd trading as Xtreme Freight with head office based in Melbourne.
It is remarkable that the first two months of the year are over and we are well and truly into 2019. With all the changes in the supply
chain and more to come, it is evident that the speed of information and technology required will pose a potential threat to the companies unable to implement effective solutions to drive growth in this challenging economic climate. With an economic downturn looming there are concerns in the wider supply chain community that businesses will be unable to absorb the increase in regulatory charges from ports and that the trade war between China and the USA will affect not only our dollar, but the ability to compete with lower commodity trade. As China is Australia’s biggest export market the impact on the local economy could be serious. Any widespread slowdown in China would reduce demand for Australian industrial commodities such as iron ore and coal, and could also hurt exports of food and services to the country’s middle class. The US and China provided almost 30% of the current stock of direct investment in Australia, meaning that if the superpowers started to pull back from global agreements, it would affect Australia’s open economy.
“Simon Birmingham, the trade minister, has warned Australian consumers will end up paying more as a result of the tariffs, while Labor’s Mark Bowen said on Wednesday that he hoped China and the US could ‘sort out their issues’. “We shouldn’t overstate it – we shouldn’t be alarmist – but the downside risk for Australia is material.” (The Guardian - https://bit.ly/2WJovUD) So, with all this activity another threat highly publicized and of concern to the global supply chain is the brown marmorated stink bugs (BMSG) which does pose a serious risk to our economies. It is important for all government bodies and associations to work together to minimise the risk of brown marmorated stink bugs (BMSB) becoming established 2

in Australia and New Zealand and to eliminate delays to imports of cargo that are critical to the countries’ economies. BMSB have migrated from East Asia to the US, Canada and Europe where they have caused significant damage to agricultural crops and, without consistent and effective regulation, there is a danger of their spreading to Australia and New Zealand and causing major harm to both countries’ agricultural economies. “Simon White, WW Ocean’s chief commercial officer, said: ‘We are committed to doing all we can to maintain Australia’s and New Zealand’s biosecurity and have worked diligently with the DAWR and MPI to encourage consistent and effective regulation to control the spread of BMSB. Regrettably, however, the current regulations are neither consistent nor effective; they continue to pose a risk to the agricultural industry, while delaying cargo that is essential to many sectors of the economy. We appeal to both the DAWR and MPI to engage with industry to find a solution that will be effective before the next BMSB season begins in September. If no solution is found, the result could be devastating for the Australian and New Zealand economies.’” (WW Ocean - https://bit.ly/2BiJOnc) As the SCLAA understands the importance of global supply chain news, we are pleased to announce that with the Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia and the Australian International Trade Association alliance, set up on 23rd November 2019, will undertake the Alliances’ first trade visit to China in April. This will enhance the relationships our Association have with other constituents, provide our members and colleagues with the opportunity to join the trade visit and keep our members updated and informed. The Alliance aims to promote the cooperation in supply chain and logistics between Australia and China and provide a series of services including exhibitions, conferences, forums and training programs. This will be combined with a Logistics & Supply Chain conference, networking dinners, forums and business meeting in each city. Our Association and trade visit delegates will be
meeting with Mayors of cities, ministers of trade, chambers of commerce and leading companies in China. There will be key organisations such as the China E Commerce Association, whose members are multinational companies such as Alibaba, JD and an additional 20 to 30 companies, who are interested in meeting with Australian manufacturers, producers and exporters to utilise their platform to sell to the Chinese market. The State governments in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria are eager to assist their business communities to take advantage of this opportunity. The 2019 Australia-China Supply Chain & Logistics Alliance China Forum is the first China Event for Australia-China Supply Chain & Logistics Alliance set up by SCLAA & AITA. With the perspective of the Alliance to promote sector cooperation and joint development, facilitate trade and business, AITA and SCLAA have organised this special event to provide the latest China and global logistics development platform for those logistics enterprises and manufacturing & exporting logistics units. It also provides a chance for those leading enterprises to display, promote and integrate market opportunities. A recent event of note was the business forum at the Queensland Parliament. It was very successful and attended by many delegates including HIA Queensland, the Queensland Government, business people and Labour and Liberal MPs. It generated many opportunities with One Australia business CertMark signing an MOU with the China Building Materials Certification centre to jointly provide
certification services for Australia Companies who want to break into the Chinese Market and Chinese Companies who want to break into the Australian Market. There are many events planned for the year including the International Women’s Day Breakfast on Friday, 8 March 2019 which the SCLAA will be hosting at Ryne Restaurant in Fitzroy North. Marie-Claire Ross, Chief Corporate Catalyst/Founder, Trustologie will be the guest speaker. Registrations for this event are now open on the event page on the SCLAA website. Also, back by popular demand and one of our most popular events last year, the SCLAA’s Women in Logistics Luncheon will be held on Friday, 2 August 2019 at Leonda by the Yarra in Melbourne from 12 noon to 4pm. A report of the 2018 Luncheon can be viewed on the SCLAA website and contains links to photographs and video highlights of the 2018 event. This is the fourth year in which this event has been held. Once the program for the event is finalised, the information will be uploaded onto the SCLAA Calendar of Events and registrations opened. It is evident that shelf items come from many places in the world with sourcing and shipping complexity. The “last mile” attracts the attention of shoppers but the “first miles” have necessarily worked effectively to permit customer choice and purchase in the Store. Of course, the Stores are spread out all over the Australia. Many are in somewhat distanced regional areas with varying demand patterns. The Supply Chains of these important organisations stand up well to the ultimate consumer tests of availability, choice and price. So, I am giving a plaudit to the Supply Chain and Logistics troops that ensure my local Supermarkets are well stocked! On the other hand, I must tell you of my recent on-line shopping experiences. I bought two personal care items from an Australian Capital City Store. Note that the cost of freight exceeded the purchase price of the items for delivery ex Sydney to Melbourne. In the second case I ordered a unique battery from a well-known supplier. Just three days later a package arrived with my correct name and address. Unfortunately, the item inside the pack was meant for someone else. When I contacted the supplier, they advised me to throw the incorrect items away and they will despatch the correct item to me when it is back in stock! No apology by the way. Another Supply Chain in dire need of improvement.
The point here is that Supply Chains can be intricate or simple, but the basic principles work effectively in every environment. People
must be trained and inspired to use effective systems and attitudes. Don’t over complicate your Supply Chains no matter what business you are in. It is imperative to focus on the eventual end Customer no matter where you are placed in the Supply Chain Network. Stick to the fundamentals. By the way I noticed a missive from Harvard Business suggesting it is useful to maintain a “Failure Resume”. Such a Resume allows reflection and learning to improve personal performance. Have you thought of that or do you try to avoid any attention on your failures? Winston Churchill once famously said something like "Failures are what happens between successes”. Occasional failures are inescapable. They should be learning experiences.

Blackouts etc or compromised water availability are not acceptable. Who sold the energy networks anyway? The toothless interventions by governments and regulators are galling. On recent hot days in Melbourne some business were forced to stop using electricity. I was asked to turn off air conditioning during peak times. Give me a
break! Is this a third world country we are living in? Don’t
give me any more bull about ‘talking to the energy suppliers”. Bring them under essential services control now and ensure immediate and long-term uncompromised energy availability at reasonable prices. “No blackouts
ever” must be the mantra for Governments and Regulators. Act now! “You don’t learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing and falling over!”

Sue Tomic It was with great pleasure that SCLAA Chairman, Amanda O’Brien, announced the appointment of a new SCLAA Independent Director, Sue Tomic in January this year. Sue will be taking up the position of Secretary/Treasurer on the SCLAA Board. Considerable diligence is taken by the SCLAA Board when considering the appointment of Independent Directors and the Board is delighted that Sue has agreed to accept the position. 2018 was a landmark year for the Association with agreements signed for additional membership benefits, the MOU with the Australia International Trade Association, development of our new website (to be launched shortly), our upgraded Member Management System and administrative cost reductions. The wealth
Sue fell into the logistics industry by accident 10 years ago, having held the position of CFO and interim CEO of Maritime Container Services, the largest privatelyowned intermodal terminal operator in Australia. Her knowledge of the containerized freight sector (road and rail) and all its associated challenges for the movement of IMEX products -both rural and local has led to a passion of being an ambassador for change to reduce costly inefficiencies. She is currently General Manager of DP World Logistics-the only Intermodal Depot at Port Botany and DP World’s first venture into landside logistics in Australia. Sue has a strong network of operator/owners and contacts and looks forward to fostering collaboration across key stakeholders in the Containerized freight transport and logistics sector from Paddock to Port (or Port to DC, whatever the case may be). Sue holds a Bachelor degree in Accounting & Management, and is a member of Australian Institute of Company Directors.

The Evolution of Wearable Warehouse Technology THE EVOLUTION OF WEARABLE WAREHOUSE TECHNOLOGY The role of the warehouse in the modern supply chain has completely changed, and warehouse technology which increases visibility, accuracy and efficiency is now more important than ever. To deal with the new emphasis on speed and accuracy, warehouse operators need tools which enable them to become more independent within the wider warehouse environment, facilitating even greater efficiency and productivity. Just as within the consumer market, wearable technology is taking a much bigger role within warehouse and supply chain management. In fact, 85% of end users are now motivated to invest in warehouse wearable initiatives if it increases employee productivity, according to research.
Wearables and efficiency From a business standpoint, wearable devices, particularly in a warehouse, have the potential to drastically boost efficiency and productivity by supplying workers with access to mobile equipment, which traditionally stayed within the central office. Although wearable devices have been around for a while, the latest incarnation of solutions offers a more varied mix of tools which can be matched specifically to budgets and operational needs. As an example, wearable computers allow operators to easily access information about a product through a picture sent to their display unit. They even allow users to take pictures themselves, if the item in question is damaged for instance. Similarly, operators can now easily capture RFID tags and barcodes through handheld ring scanners, which can scan items several feet away on the warehouse floor to quickly identify or confirm product information. Previously, operators would have been forced to use centralised computers to locate products and problems would only be identified after the item had moved through

to the next stage in the delivery chain, like a loading dock – assuming the problem was spotted at all. Wearable and mobile tools now make these processes much more streamlined and simpler, while reducing the chance of human error or incorrect shipments.
Multi-modal future Maintaining efficiency and accuracy is already a major challenge in the modern supply chain, and this is only going to become more profound in the coming years. As a result, the steps already taken to achieve more speed and accuracy will also have to continue – and this is where “multi-modal” systems will come into play. Enabling workers to use spoken instructions will simplify tasks even further, for example by removing the need to navigate touchscreen computers. Combined with handsfree scanning, multi-modal systems can further drastically reduce the time taken to pick each item. Operators could also benefit from voice-directed picking, allowing them to rapidly locate inventory. This is particularly useful for seasonal workers, who can quickly get to grips with stock location. These mobile devices can also boost productivity and efficiency further by providing “bestroutes” through the warehouse so operatives can get to inventory quicker, enabling on-the-spot verification through hands-free scanning and providing real-time updates on inventory. What is clear, is that modern supply chain and warehouse management must continue to offer both operators and managers the tools they need to meet more challenging delivery times. Inventory management is now much more fast-paced and contingent on being able to move products across a much wider network of warehouses and stores than in previous years. In a modern, fast-paced, on-demand environment, the cost of incorrect, late or missed shipments can be catastrophic to businesses. Luckily, new technologies and mobile hardware exist to make this challenge much more manageable. Gary Pearce - ACT/SNSW State President The ACT/SNSW Division attended the based supply chain operations in this region which handles recent Public Sector Finance & Procurement perishable foods in both the domestic and international conference that was held here in Canberra markets. (similar events were also held in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne). Our Committee saw this as a perfect opportunity to showcase the SCLAA and try to lift the Association’s profile in what is still predominantly a public sector city.
At this stage, we are also in the preliminary planning stages for a visit in May to the Royal Australian Mint, with an upclose-and-personal look at how our coins are produced. This promises to be a particularly interesting event, although we have been told that there are no free samples provided as part of the tour!
With the assistance of one of our divisional members, we were able to arrange for the printing of promotional materials, recent newsletters and membership forms for distribution on the day, together with the moderate purchase of some promotional merchandise (SCLAA branded pens and notepads). For such a nominal investment, we were able to reach out to many public sector departments attending the conference, many of whom had had little previous exposure to or knowledge of the SCLAA. Our presence was well-received and we are hopeful of developing strong ties in the future with a number of Commonwealth departments and agencies through this initiative.

Apart from providing an educational and networking opportunity for our current members, we also see these site visits as an opportunity to generate interest and involvement of potential new members. We believe that it’s extremely important for the ACT/SNSW Division to expand our presence and influence within Canberra, across both the public and private sectors. Canberra is the “lobbying capital” of Australia, so it can only help the SCLAA to influence government decision-making if we have a strong presence here.
Focus on a Committee Member ACT-SNSW Division - Mike Steele
MIKE STEELE (NMM Business Strategy and Having had a long career in the public sector, at both Development Manager – SCLAA ACT/SNSW the local ACT and Commonwealth levels, Mike brings a refreshing perspective to how the business manages Division Events Coordinator) and interacts with the government client. Having himself been a buyer of goods and services for many years, he can identify what’s important to the client, defining and emphasising the importance of the concepts of valuefor-money, sound relationship management, corporate compliance and innovation/continuous improvement.
After joining NMM, Mike was very keen to be included as one of NMM’s four corporate members of the SCLAA – his reasoning being that as a member of a professional association like the SCLAA, it would assist with his new career development and provide extended local networking opportunities in the private sector. He has since proven to be a key member of the ACT/SNSW Division, predominantly in the role of Events Coordinator. Mike joined National Mailing & Marketing in February 2015 following his retirement from the Commonwealth Public Service after a 17 year career. He has a broad experience across the fields of print, publishing, graphic design, marketing communications, project management and procurement. He also has an in-depth knowledge and understanding of Commonwealth and local ACT Government Procurement Rules and Practices.
Mike has been instrumental in organising our many visits to a variety of businesses in the ACT Region, introducing our members to the supply chain management processes of these organisations and providing industry-wide networking opportunities. In this role, Mike also provides support and assistance to all committee members and office bearers, whether that be in organising our meetings, sourcing promotional opportunities for the Association, secretarial duties and financial management.
In his role as Business Strategy and Development Manager at NMM, Mike combines the knowledge and perceptions of being a past client, together with the skills he has obtained in marketing and communications. This enables him to assist the General Manager to develop effective strategies to grow the business of NMM and to identify process and operational efficiencies to improve overall standards and the delivery of sound customer service.
Mike has also been the main driving force behind the establishment and running of the Hume Traders Association, a networking group set up to give local Hume businesses in Canberra a coordinated voice in dealing with government and local council issues. In many respects, being directly involved in both associations provides Mike with many synergies (and challenges) that put him in a unique position to progress the interests of both.

Can you believe it is almost March! The year is just flying by at a whirl wind speed. Is your lack of family time because of all the deadlines you have? Is it your shareholders who demand even more in a diverse global economy? Is it social media that seems to be changing its entire look and feel, every time we get out of bed? What happened through the night while we were sleeping? I'll leave it to you to be that judge. Whatever your thoughts are as to the reason why we feel that time is always slipping by, your competitors don't ever seem to dwindle at the gates. Constantly trying to find ways to gain market share, your market share, that hard earned market share that has cost you, one way or another.
Strategy Strategy is the one thing that can ease the stress and loss of direction, that direction you once had when things seemed to be slower and you were more in control of your destiny, seemingly at least. Most people don't understand how integral your strategy is within your business, it is the driver of all things, finance, people, projects, purchasing, development - Innovation. Yes, innovation,. It is what we use now to describe the one thing that can separate you between your competitors and the one thing that can attract market share. Apple has spent decades on innovation; Steve Jobs was that innovation, the epicentre of all things that helped and delivered growth for years, to become the largest company to ever trade publicly. Without innovation, you become stagnate and when you become stagnate; Well, we don't hear about those stories do we? It's time to get in control. It's time you took back your mojo and started to formulate what needs to be written, heard, understood and delivered. Ever wondered why a purchase was made and no one really knew the purpose except the person in your organisation who made that purchase? That is an organisation with no strategy, with no purpose and no direction. Is that you?
It doesn't have to be. You can change your direction, you can change your purpose and you can deliver a strategy that will define your company’s purpose, direction and opportunity. You can be innovative and you can drive innovation and you can if you want, be on the cover of any magazine you wish. You just need free thought and clarity as to what you bring to the marketplace. You are that driver, you are that company director who once had a vision, a dream and a direction.

Let’s sit down and talk about the importance of strategy and why deliveries result when driven through the heart of any organisation. But it has to be owned, it has to be heard, it has to be understood by you and all. It has to be simple, it has to be unique and it has to define your goals and dreams. We have the opportunity you need, to help you write an earth-shattering strategy, to be heard by your team and understood by your business, to drive innovation through the very heart of everything you do, to ensure that your customer is not forgotten and talks the town down about what you do. Kyle Rogers - VIC/TAS State President What’s next? It is hard to believe it is almost March and we appreciate you are taking some time out of your day to read this. The SCLAA and the VIC/TAS team, in particular, would like to thank you for your ongoing support in 2018. Many say this. However, our events would not be the same without people taking time out from their personal lives to show up. The team here in Melbourne are laser-focused and are keen to build on 2018’s success. We want to “keep the momentum” going per se and plan, organise and execute the best events this industry can offer to our valued members. While everyone has been settling back into work after a sunny summer period, the VIC/TAS committee has held our first meeting of the year.
As always, we are busily working away at creating the next big events for SCLAA VIC/TAS. Why did you join SCLAA? I was introduced to the SCLAA as an opportunity to develop my professional network and enrich my understanding of the Supply Chain industry. I have attended several of the SCLAA’s thought leadership events and found them to be a valuable source of industry-specific emerging technologies and practices. I look forward to becoming more involved with the Victorian Committee to develop my professional skills and meet like-minded people who are passionate about what they do.
Why did you choose the supply chain?
Another great networking event, with new and old faces turning off to celebrate the most extensive and fasting growing industry association. Almost 70 people turned up to clink glasses and close off the year in style. It was the perfect occasion for our President of 2018 to pass on the baton to the incoming President of 2019. Plenty more events to come as the year progresses.
I have previously undertaken a tertiary study in Mechanical Engineering and Robotics, and I have a keen interest in understanding how things work. After shifting from an Engineering to a Business degree, I found the problem-solving elements of Supply Chain and Logistics to be rewarding. I have previously worked in a national road-freight business and have found my skillset to be a good fit for the industry. What is the proudest moment of your career? While my career so far has been relatively short, I am proud to have been accepted into my current graduate position at QLSA. The role offers me exposure to exciting and challenging international business concepts, as well as daily opportunities to develop my technical and communication skills.
What are your career aspirations? A major aspiration of mine is to work overseas, specifically in a shipping port environment such as Shanghai or Rotterdam. I am very interested in the scale of container shipping and the potential for Blockchain related technologies to make major changes to Global Supply Chain visibility and transparency.
Introducing Jason O’Brien Committee Member What is your current occupation? I am the Customer Service Officer at QLSA (Quality Logistics Services Australia), QLSA is the authorised distributor of ExxonMobil Basestocks in Australia. My primary role revolves around order processing and booking transport for liquid bulk deliveries. Additionally, I am involved in ongoing market research and industry analysis projects, as well as providing support to warehouse operations. I am also currently completing my final semester of my Bachelor of Business at Swinburne University of Technology,
