SUNBRELLA® LOOKS AHEAD

INTRODUCTION

design influences and trends

At Sunbrella, our goal has always been to make life better with our timeless performance fabrics. Innovating has been in our DNA since the beginning, and for the last 60 years, we’ve continued to not only improve on our fabric’s renowned longevity, but also offer more color, style and texture choices. Recently, that innovation took us to new and beautiful places. We’ve gone beyond fabrics to create finished performance products—including the softest throws, the prettiest custom window treatments including solar shades and a range of cleaning solutions—without sacrificing the qualities that are synonymous with Sunbrella: timelessness, durability, and effortless care. The collaborative spirit of our global design team brings artists, new tools, and technology together to not only develop methods for making Sunbrella fabrics and products, but to produce them with sustainable practices. Through our latest program, Sunbrella ReMade, we’re upcycling fabric scraps instead of recycling them and transforming them into the bespoke products. Innovation, collaboration, and intention. At Sunbrella, we are striving to do the right thing for our customers, our partners and our planet.

DESIGN INFLUENCES

We’re all, it seems, looking for peace and tranquility wherever we can find it. Our insights tell us that people crave a place where they can rejuvenate and recharge in meaningful surroundings. For most, that place is home. Warmth and serenity is what they are after, and they are finding it in earthy colors, textured fabrics, distressed surfaces and burnished metals. If one can’t be in the desert at sundown, on a sandy beach, or in a stand of pine trees, then the next best thing is to surround oneself with nature’s palette .

People are discovering that taming the turbulence in their lives comes more naturally when they live intentionally, with cherished pieces that are filled with memories. There’s no room for superfluous decoration, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a strong aesthetic sensibility. On the contrary, spaces must function and function beautifully . It’s a holistic way of thinking; what we surround ourselves with has an impact on our well-being as well as on the health of the planet.

There is a deep understanding that what we choose to live with affects how we feel, and that it is important to feel unique. We’re finding that there are no rules , except for those people set for themselves. For some, jewel tones feel right in a neutral palette. For others, traditional textiles work with sleek surfaces. No one wants to live in spaces that look like their neighbor’s—and they don’t have to, given the easy access to almost anything they desire. Such edited eclecticism is not surprising.

DESIGN INFLUENCES

art + architecture + fashion

A generosity of spirit among the creative disciplines —art, architecture, fashion— in which they borrow from each other, results in thoughtful, original, functional and beautiful work.

UNITE

celebrate individual style

A high/low mix of the new, vintage, inherited and found is part of the narrative. Color is key.

Combining hues from nature — earthy reds, greens from forest to sea, desert landscapes, blush sunsets — with rich jewel tones is proof that the more colors you use, the more they go together. A dash of classic elements, too, adds personal flair: navy accents, traditional textiles —hand-stitched, embroidered, appliqued, deep wood tones and painted pieces— tap into the time-honored. Taken together, it’s how to stand apart.

More and more, we’re seeing people take advantage of opportunities to exchange information across disciplines—art, manufacturing, technology —to “connect and collect”. This is happening the design world over, with a mutual goal: to develop sustainable solutions. This interaction is a powerful combination that leads to new ideas, methods and products. Extending the lifecycle of products through upcycling and recycling is a common goal, along with paying attention to waste and its impact on landfills.

INTERACTION

connect and collect

Core to the idea of combining different influences is pairing unexpected colors and materials. Captivating pops of color layered with grounding, textural neutrals add intrigue, bringing fun to function. That a product works is no longer enough; it has to infuse a space with beauty and meet a regenerative standard: no-waste initiatives, including turning scraps into useful and beautiful home products, is one way. Going all in means reaching out.

Our hyperconnected lives move at a pace so breathless that finding sanctuary is essential. In a thoughtfully designed space filled with familiar objects and happy memories, the breath slows, the body relaxes and the brain gains clarity. The most elemental things—a soft throw, a silky pillow, a lovingly worn chair—offer comfort and safety. intention is one of the best ways to imbue the ordinary with importance.

REFLECTION

live with clear intention

Nature is the best stress reliever; bringing its palette into our lives is one of the simplest ways to benefit from its extraordinary gifts. Earth tones—terracotta, brick, clay, sand, stone—soothe and rejuvenate. Warm gold, bronze and copper fill a space with a restful glow. It all adds up to surroundings that allow for introspection; we live with clear intention and learn to appreciate what is useful and meaningful.
