Unlocking the Placebo Effect: How the Brain Self-Tricks for Relief

Stanford, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and Allen Institute for Brain Science revealed a pathway from the cortex to the cerebellum that explains how pain relief can occur without analgesics.

The researchers first identified, through imaging, regions of the brain with increased activity, but it was not clear exactly what was happening—only that something definitely was. From there, they conducted an intricate study on mice to focus on the mechanisms at play.

Mouse Study and Pain Pathway Activation In the mouse study, researchers found that neurons and synapses along the brain’s pathway—from the cortex to the cerebellum—became highly active when pain relief was expected, regardless of actual medication.

Key Discoveries in Pain Modulation They discovered that when mice received a placebo, the rostral ACC neurons signaled the pontine nucleus, activating other signals along the pathway despite no actual pain relief.

When we inhibited activity in this pathway, we realized we were disrupting placebo analgesia and decreasing pain thresholds. would gather energy from the Sun and beam it at high concentrations to other satellites in orbit.

Collecting solar energy in space makes even more sense – energy is captured continuously, 24 hours a day, without being dependent on the weather or taking up valuable land. It is not surprising that efforts to capture sunlight from space and transmit it to Earth are increasing.

However, Star Catcher has a different approach. Instead of facing the challenge of sending the energy back to Earth, the startup intends to use this energy to power other satellites more efficiently.

The Star Catcher Network The Star Catcher Network would consist of a series of Power Node satellites that capture ambient solar energy, concentrate it, and beam it to the solar panels of other satellites.

The company claims that each node can provide up to 150 kW of transmission capacity, being able to send energy to multiple satellites simultaneously. The organizations operating the receiving satellites simply provide the “orbital elements” to Star Catcher so they can track and supply them with power

From a business perspective, Star Catcher and the client organizations would enter into a contract that specifies the amount of energy sent, the concentration (from 0.1 to 10 Suns), and the frequency needed. Element 120 Discovery Possible after Titanium Beam Breakthrough

Scientists at Berkeley Lab have successfully used a titanium beam to create atoms of element 116. This not only introduces a new method for producing this extremely rare element but also serves as a proof-ofconcept for potentially creating the yet-to-be-discovered element 120, which may exhibit stability.

The periodic table organizes elements by their atomic number, or the number of protons in their nucleus.

While the first 94 elements occur naturally, elements heavier than that have only been synthesized in laboratories by fusing existing elements together.

On paper, it seems simple: combine two elements whose protons add up to the desired atomic number.

For example, to produce oganesson (118 protons), scientists fire a calcium beam (20 protons) at a californium target (98 protons).

While it’s believed that more elements exist beyond the current periodic table, californium is the heaviest viable target; heavier elements are too unstable.

Dogs approached a bowl in the near-negative position less frequently when they smelled the scent of a stressed stranger, compared to when they smelled the scent of a relaxed stranger or a blank cloth.

The stress odor was less discouraging when the bowl was in the middle or near-positive position, but when the bowl was near the foodless zone, the odor was enough to dampen their hopes.

When dogs weren’t exposed to the stress odor, the near-negative bowl location didn’t dissuade them as much. This suggests that dogs consider ambient odors along with the bowl’s position to estimate the likelihood of finding food.

MIT scientists have found an intriguing new method to produce hydrogen fuel using soda cans, seawater, and coffee grounds. They believe this

chemical reaction could power engines or fuel cells in marine vehicles that use seawater.

Hydrogen plays a crucial role in decarbonizing energy production due to its clean-burning nature, high energy density, and the fact that its only by-product in fuel cells is water.

However, a significant challenge is its storage and transportation. The small hydrogen molecules often leak through containers and pipes, leading to losses and potentially causing environmental issues.

On-Demand Hydrogen Production Using Aluminum Pellets for Marine Vehicles MIT’s new method offers a way to produce hydrogen on demand directly in a vehicle. Instead of storing and transporting hydrogen, you would only need to carry aluminum pellets, which are more stable and manageable.

In tests, a single 0.3 g (0.01 oz) aluminum pellet in fresh, de-ionized water generated 400 ml of hydrogen in five minutes. Scaled up, one gram of pellets could produce about 1.3 L (0.3 gal) of hydrogen in the same timeframe.

Aeon aims to “standardize staff members’ smiles and maximize customer satisfaction.”

Aeon, a leading Japanese supermarket chain, has introduced a new AI system designed to evaluate and “standardize” employee smiles.

Mr Smile includes game-like features to motivate staff to improve their scores and their overall “service attitude.”

On July 1, the company announced the implementation of a “smile-rating AI system” called “Mr Smile” in 240 stores across Japan, making Aeon the first company to utilize this technology.

Aeon conducted a successful trial of the AI software in eight stores, involving about 3,400 employees, and reported a 1.6-fold improvement in “service attitude” over three months before implementing the system in all its stores.

Developing Hydrogen Reactors for Marine Vehicles Using Aluminum and Seawater The researchers suggest using their method to develop practical hydrogen reactors for marine vehicles, which would eliminate the need to transport hydrogen. Instead, only aluminum and seawater would be required to generate hydrogen.

Seventh Patient Cured of HIV: Why Scientists are Excited

A 60-year-old man in Germany has become at least the seventh person with HIV to be declared free of the virus after receiving a stem-cell transplant. Although he has been virus-free for almost six years, he is only the second person to receive stem cells that are not naturally resistant to the virus.

Expert Reactions and Historical Context “I’m quite surprised that it worked,” says Ravindra Gupta, a microbiologist at the University of Cambridge, UK, who led the team that treated one of the other patients now free of HIV. Timothy Ray Brown, the Berlin patient, was the first to be found HIVfree after a bone marrow transplant.

Implications for Stem-Cell Transplantation The findings broaden the donor pool for stem-cell transplants, a risky procedure mostly used for leukemia patients. About 1% of Europeans have mutations in both CCR5 gene copies, while 10% have one mutated copy.

The case “broadens the horizon of what might be possible” for treating HIV, says Sara Weibel, a physician-scientist studying HIV at the University of California, San Diego. Approximately 40 million people globally live with HIV. Case Study: Six Years HIV-Free The next Berlin patient was diagnosed with HIV in 2009 and devel-

oped acute myeloid leukemia in 2015.

His doctors could not find a matching stem-cell donor with mutations in both copies of the CCR5 gene, but they found a female donor with one mutated copy, similar to the patient.

The stem-cell transplant was performed in 2015.

The cancer treatment went very well, says Christian Gaebler, a physician-scientist and immunologist at Charité — Berlin University Medicine, who presented the research. Within a month, the patient’s bone marrow stem cells had been replaced with the donor’s. The patient stopped taking antiretroviral drugs in 2018, and now, almost six years later, researchers cannot find evidence of HIV replication in the patient.

Exploring Success Factors and Future Directions Previous stem cell transplants from donors with normal CCR5 genes saw the virus return weeks or months after stopping antiretroviral therapy, except in one case. In 2023, Asier Sáez-Cirión from the Pasteur Institute reported on the Geneva patient, who had been off therapy for 18 months.

Sáez-Cirión says the person remains free of the virus, about 32 months later.

First, antiretroviral treatment significantly reduces the amount of virus in the body. Additionally, chemotherapy before the stem-cell transplant kills many of the host’s immune cells, where residual HIV might be hiding.

The transplanted donor cells may then mark remaining host cells as foreign and destroy them, along with any virus present in them. The rapid replacement of the host’s bone marrow stem cells with those from the donor might also contribute to the swift eradication. “If you can shrink the reservoir enough, you can cure people,” says Lewin.

The fact that both the next Berlin patient and his stem cell donor had one CCR5 gene copy with a mutation may have created an extra barrier to the virus entering cells, says Gaebler.

Implications for Gene-Editing Therapies The case also impacts early-stage clinical trials where therapies edit the CCR5 receptor from a person’s cells using gene-editing techniques like CRISPR–Cas9, according to Lewin.

Even if these therapies do not reach every single cell, they could still have a significant impact.

Researchers are now investigating why these two transplants succeeded where others failed.

They propose several mechanisms.

The researchers emphasize that this is a crucial consideration when evaluating the feasibility of biotech like Blindsight.

“Many people lose their sight later in life,” Fine noted. “At 70 years old, adapting to life as a blind individual is very challenging, and there’s often a high rate of depression and a strong desire to regain sight. While blindness itself doesn’t make people

Researchers globally, with significant contributions from McGill University and Western University, collaborated on the search for Gliese 12 b through the InfraRed Doppler Subaru Strategic Program (IRD-SSP), which focuses on identifying habitable zone planets around red dwarfs.

Advanced Detection Methods and New Horizons for Exoplanet Research The international team detected the planet using a blend of advanced telescopes and observational methods. This discovery opens up exciting possibilities for gaining a deeper understanding of worlds beyond our solar system.

Gliese 12 b orbits a central star known as Gliese 12, a red dwarf. Red dwarfs are smaller, cooler, and more common than G-Type stars like our Sun. Planets orbiting red dwarfs are prime targets in the search for extraterrestrial life because terrestrial planets are easier to detect around these stars compared to more massive stars like our Sun. Gliese 12 is one of two red dwarf

stars—along with TRAPPIST-1—within 100 light-years of Earth that host Earth-sized planets with relatively low levels of stellar radiation.

TRAPPIST-1’s intense activity, such as frequent high-energy stellar flares, likely affects the habitability of its planets, with recent observations suggesting that TRAPPIST-1 b and c have nearly no atmosphere.

Highly active stars like TRAPPIST-1 emit more frequent and intense flares, producing harmful high-energy radiation. In contrast, Gliese 12 is an unusually calm red dwarf, providing its planets with much less detrimental radiation.

Size and Position Gliese 12 b is particularly fascinating due to its size and position. It is approximately the same size as Earth, which suggests it could have a similar composition and surface environment. However, further observations and modeling are necessary to verify this.

The planet’s location near the inner edge of its star’s habitable zone adds to its interest. The habitable zone, or “Goldilocks zone,” is the region around a star where conditions are ideal for liquid water to exist on a planet’s surface.

Since water is crucial for life as we understand it, discovering a planet in this zone is a significant advancement in the search for extraterrestrial

life.

Gliese 12 b receives just enough starlight to be slightly inside the inner edge of the habitable zone for red dwarfs. However, whether liquid water actually exists depends on its atmospheric and surface conditions.

In comparison, the starlight it receives is intermediate between the levels Earth and Venus receive from the Sun. Further investigation of Gliese 12 b could help clarify the critical differences between a habitable planet like Earth and an inhospitable one like Venus.
