The World’s Oldest Skin Discovered in an Exceptionally Rare Fossil find

Scientists have found the oldest skin fossils, which are from a time long before dinosaurs existed. These samples, discovered in a cave in Oklahoma, show that reptile scales have barely changed in 286 million years.

Most fossils in museums are bones because bones take a long time to decompose, giving them more time to fossilize. Soft tissues like skin, muscles, and organs usually decay or get eaten quickly, so they’re rarely found.

However, under the right conditions, soft tissues can be preserved. For example, if something is buried quickly in the right material, you might find a dinosaur tail with feathers preserved in amber, a 133-million-year-old brain preserved in a bog, or

a nodosaur with skin and scales that look almost lifelike.

Discovery of Ancient Reptile Skin Sheds Light on Evolutionary History Scientists at the University of Toronto have discovered the oldest fossilized skin ever found, which is at least 21 million years older than any previously known fossil skin. This sample is between 286 and 289 million years old, predating the earliest dinosaurs by at least 40 million years.

The skin belonged to an early reptile and looks remarkably similar to modern crocodile skin, with a pebbled surface and flexible areas between the scales like snake skin.

Usually, what we know about ancient animal skin comes from imprints left in mud that harden into rock after the skin decays. In this case, the actual skin is preserved in small, three-dimensional fragments, including both the tough outer layer and the rarer inner layer.

Currently, habitat loss poses the greatest threat to global species. As human populations surge, we transform more wilderness and consume increasing resources, making large species like tigers and elephants particularly susceptible to extinction.

Once prevalent throughout Asia, tigers (Panthera tigris) have seen a dramatic loss of 93% of their habitat over the past 150 years. Current estimates suggest fewer than 4,000 tigers remain in the wild.

It’s commonly understood that consistent exercise can enhance various health parameters. However, a recent study highlights the significance of the timing of your workouts, particularly in managing blood sugar levels.

The study was conducted by two researchers affiliated with the University of Granada in Spain.

They analyzed data from 186 overweight and/or obese adults, characterized by an average BMI of 32.9. The participants, averaging around 47 years of age, were equipped with an accelerometer to monitor physical activity and a continuous glucose monitor for a two-week period.

Evening Exercise from 6 pm to Midnight Yields All-Day Blood Glucose Reduction, Unlike Sedentary Behavior The researchers discovered that participants who engaged in more than 50% of their moderate to vigorous exercise during the evening hours of 6 pm to midnight experienced notable reductions in their blood glucose levels that lasted throughout the day, not just immediately after exercising.

Another study showed that morning workouts were associated with greater reductions in belly fat and blood pressure among women, while evening workouts were linked to improved upper body strength, endurance, and mood. Additionally, men who exercised at night experienced lower blood pressure, increased fat burning, and reduced risk of heart disease.

paleoanthropologist María Martinón-Torres of the Spanish National Research Centre for Human Evolution said, “I am more and more persuaded that something amazing happened here.” However, they haven’t passed the muster to demonstrate purposeful burial.

In 2013, the first finding made by Berger’s team in Rising Star was the bones of at least fifteen people found at the base of a chute 50 kilometers northwest of Johannesburg. Because of its unusual combination of characteristics, including a small brain and a spherical skull, the scientists named it a new species.

The fact that it lived so recently—between 241,000 and 335,000 years ago, according to radiometric dates on sediments above and below the remains—astonished researchers as well. There were orange-red stones scattered throughout the bones, which seemed to come from a lower layer.

Berger, who had to give up his weight in order to enter the chamber, thinks the stones demonstrate how ancient grave diggers dug out the hole, removed rocks and mud, put them aside, and then covered the body with them.

The group discovered a second batch of extremely brittle bones in another part of the cave. Two large slabs of dirt containing bones were retrieved, plastered over, and brought to their laboratory. CT scans there showed 90 Symbolic Evidence in the Caves On the cave walls, they also found geometric designs and crosshatchings engraved; some of these shapes were carved on top of one another, suggesting that they were etched at separate times. The oldest known examples of undeniable symbolic art are from Blombos Cave in South Africa, which date back 73,000 years.

Berger, however, contends that since no other hominin left behind traces in the caves, the undated etchings have to be the creation of H. naledi. Berger was scheduled to discuss the discovery at the Richard Leakey Memorial Conference at Stony Brook University today.

He also claims that H. naledi had fire, despite the fact that there is no proof of this in the papers, in order to function in the dark. However, fire was regulated by hominins in other areas at least 600,000 years ago. Berger has uploaded pictures of charcoal online.

Clive Finlayson, an evolution scientist at the Gibraltar National Museum, concurs. “The structure of the brain is more important than its size,” he asserts. Since no evidence of large-brained people has been discovered in the cave, he believes the etchings were “most likely” created by H. naledi. According to Finlayson, “it demonstrates that Homo naledi had a degree of self-awareness.”

Debate and Challenges to the Interpretation Some, however, contend that the team’s data does not support such leaps. Archaeologist João Zilhão of the University of Barcelona, who has suggested that Neanderthals created early cave art, adds, “The whole thing is unconvincing.”

He and others claim that the H. naledi carcasses could have been positioned by natural processes. The dead might have fallen, been washed in, or been thrown into the chamber, for instance.

The bones may have shifted and became covered in dirt due to geologic movement and sedimentation, which are frequent in caves. According to Durham University archaeologist Paul Pettitt, the undated etchings could have been created considerably later.

They bear a resemblance to later carvings made by Homo sapiens in South Africa.

The Need for Further Investigation According to Pettitt, an authority on ancient graves, the facts now “sadly do not present a clear and unambiguous demonstration of a deliberate burial. “In order to ascertain if the bones and sediments were deposited simultaneously in a burial or at various times, as well as whether the dead were later disturbed by geological movements, he adds the team must complete digging the pits and carefully examine the remains.

According to Martinón-Torres, it’s not evident from the pictures whether the remains were buried intentionally or if they were laid down whole. She claims, “We don’t have articulated bodies.”

The abundance of broken objects that one would anticipate from a grave site, like the stone tools used to excavate the pits, is also absent. “Typical cultural remnants from incarcerations should be present,” says Arizona State University archaeologist Curtis Marean.

“Considering the incredibly difficult work environment, they are going to have a tremendous struggle making an ironclad case for pits and burials,” he continues.

Scholars concur that Berger and his colleagues have discovered an amazing death scene by discovering so many specimens of H. naledi.

AI-Powered Noise-Canceling Headphones Allow Only One Voice to Pass Through

In our bustling modern world, noise-canceling headphones offer respite from the cacophony. However, their indiscriminate sound reduction can inadvertently drown out important voices. Enter a new prototype AI system called “Target Speech Hearing.”

It allows users to select a specific person’s voice to remain audible even amidst noise cancellation. Although still a proof of concept, this technology could soon enhance popular noise-canceling earbuds and even hearing aids, ensuring that we hear what truly matters.

This technology is still in the early stages, but its creators are talking with popular noise-canceling earbud brands and also want to make it available for hearing aids.

“Listening to specific people is a key part of how we communicate and interact with others,” says Shyam Gollakota, a professor at the University of Washington who worked on the project. “It can be very difficult to focus on certain people in noisy environments, even if you don’t have hearing problems.”

To use the Target Speech Hearing system, the wearer holds down a button on the headphones for a few seconds while facing the person they want to focus on. During this time, called “enrollment,” the system records an audio sample from both headphones to identify the speaker’s voice, even if there are other voices and noises around.

Trainning AI to Recognize and Filter The same researchers had previously trained an AI to recognize and filter out specific sounds like babies crying, birds chirping, or alarms ringing.

However, separating human voices is more difficult and needs more complex AI. This complexity is a problem because AI models must work in real-time on headphones with limited computing power and battery life. To handle these limits, the neural networks had to be small and energy-efficient. So, the team used a technique called knowledge distillation. This involved taking a large AI model trained on millions of voices (the “teacher”) and using it to train a much smaller model (the “student”) to perform just as well.

These voice features are sent to a neural network on a small computer connected to the headphones by a USB cable. This network runs all the time, separating the chosen voice from others and playing it back to the listener. Once the system locks onto a speaker, it keeps focusing on that person’s voice, even if the wearer turns away. The more the system listens to a speaker, the better it gets at isolating that voice.

Currently, the system can only successfully focus on a speaker if their voice is the loudest one. However, the team is working to make it function even when the loudest voice isn’t the target speaker.

Advancing Speech Separation: Practical Applications and Future Prospects

Picking out one voice in a noisy place is very hard, says Sefik Emre Eskimez, a senior researcher at Microsoft who works on speech and AI but didn’t work on this particular study. “I know companies want to do this,” he says.

“If they can figure it out, it could be useful in many areas, especially during meetings.”

Although speech separation research is usually more about theory than practice, this study has clear practical uses, says Samuele Cornell, a researcher at Carnegie Mellon University’s Language Technologies Institute who also didn’t work on this study. “I think it’s a move in the right direction,” Cornell says. “It’s a refreshing change.”

Alcohol on Planes Could Be Riskier Than You Think

Kononenko expressed his pride and confidence in an interview with Russian state news agency TASS. He spoke about the significance of reaching this milestone and the sense of accomplishment it brought him.

Effects of Long-Term Space Travel Long-term space travel significantly impacts the human body. In microgravity, fluids like blood shift towards

individuals who consumed alcohol had an average blood oxygen level of 94.97 percent and a heart rate of 76.97 beats per minute (bpm). Those who did not consume alcohol under normal pressure had a blood oxygen level of 95.88 percent and a heart rate of 63.74 bpm.

“This study is the first to explore the combined effects of hypobaric hypoxia and alcohol consumption during sleep,” the researchers noted in their published paper.

At reduced pressure simulating airplane cabin conditions, the corresponding figures were 85.32 percent SpO2 and 87.73 bpm for drinkers, and 88.07 percent SpO2 and 72.90 bpm for non-drinkers.

“We show that consuming alcohol onboard poses a health hazard that is often underestimated and can be easily avoided.”

Comparisons with Other Astronauts Astronauts from other countries have not come close to Kononenko’s cumulative time in space. American astronaut Peggy Whitson holds the NASA record with 665 days. For the longest continuous stay, cosmonaut Valeri Polyakov holds the record with 437 days and 18 hours on the Mir space station in the mid-1990s. On the NASA side, Frank Rubio spent 371 days on the International Space Station due to a spacecraft problem, achieving this last September.

At these higher altitudes, where oxygen levels decrease (a condition known as hypobaric hypoxia), blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) begins to decline. This new study reveals that combining alcohol consumption with sleep under these conditions could pose significant risks.

Next time you’re on a long-haul flight, consider refraining from drinking alcohol and napping—it’s a combination that a recent study suggests could strain your heart.

Researchers from the Institute of Aerospace Medicine at the German Aerospace Center divided 40 volunteers into two sleep lab chambers: one simulating ground-level pressure and another simulating the pressure experienced on an airplane flying at approximately 2,438 meters (about 8,000 feet).

The study involved four groups: individuals sleeping at normal pressure with or without alcohol consumption, and those sleeping at simulated cabin pressure with or without alcohol consumption.

Alcohol Consumption and Sleep Limitations in the Study Participants received an alcohol dose equivalent to two cans of beer or two glasses of wine.

Their sleep was restricted to four hours per night during the experiments, aiming to simulate disrupted sleep patterns commonly encountered during flights.
