Dear Scissortail Park Friends and Members,
In just a few weeks, Scissortail Park opens its Lower Park that is teeming with new features and green spaces that add even more beauty, fun, play and programming to Scissortail Park.

We could not be more excited to finally take down the construction fencing and invite the public to discover all the beautiful new spaces and facilities it offers everyone in the community to use and enjoy.
I hope you can join us for one or all three days of events and activities at our Lower Park opening scheduled for September 23-25. From the opening OKC Phil concert at the Love’s Stage on Friday evening to Saturday and Sunday’s full schedule of a diverse array of activities, it will be a weekend to celebrate. Our Park staff have gone above and beyond in planning a fantastic weekend for all of you.
Scissortail Park has been massively transformational for downtown OKC.
Now, with the southern end of the Park complete, the entire nearly 70-acres is a green Core-to-Shore bridge to link the

downtown to the River and its beautiful walking and biking trails that extend to the Boathouse District. It also links the downtown closer to the vibrant Capitol Hill area for more visitors to discover the Park.
We are also very excited about a new partnership with the YMCA who will be helping to program activities for youth at the new athletic areas of the Lower Park that include a soccer field, futsal court, pickleball courts and two Thunder branded basketball courts.
Community partners have greatly helped us add vibrant diversity and quality programming to the Park since it opened in 2019. We look forward to continually expanding our partnerships so the Park is as vibrant, diverse and rich and just plain fun for all at every visit.
A new Nature Play area in the Lower Park adds a green space with mature trees that lends itself to creative play and imagination for young children that is nature-based. Watch for new features and programming we will be layering into this area over the years.
Dear Sponsors,
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Sincere thanks to our many sponsors who have contributed funding to help us produce our Lower Park opening events. Their generosity and commitment to helping our community thrive is so vital to our ability to provide a beautiful, safe and vibrant park experience for all.

Scissortail Park’s Completion
A Dream becomes Reality and Takes Flight
The 36-acre Upper Park opened in 2018 and now the Lower Park, a 34-acre site is opening with new amenities and features to provide more facilities and programming for a diverse audience of all ages. The Park has been designed by one of the foremost landscape architectural firms in the world – Hargreaves Jones Associates. Mary Margaret Jones and Gavin McMillan have spent over a decade collaborating and creating the design of the Park and helping to oversee its construction to ensure all details are carefully executed. The designers along with MAPS Director David Todd and MAPS project manager Tim Jones, Architects Torrey and Hans Butzer, Wynn Construction and Foundation staff, have all worked together with the goal of exceeding expectations for how richly a major new Park can uplift and bring more natural beauty and vitality to downtown Oklahoma City.

A project that began in 2010 is approaching full completion on September 23, 2022 as we prepare to celebrate the completion of the 70-acre Scissortail Park.

SOUTHWALKERAVENUE
Scissortail Park has been a transformational project for Oklahoma City. Funded by the MAPS program, a 1-cent tax initiative that has funded major projects over the last two decades that have significantly raised the quality of life in Oklahoma City for everyone. Scissortail Park was funded in MAPS 3 program.
The 36-acre Upper Park opened in 2019 and now the Lower Park, a 34-acre site is opening with new amenities and features to provide more facilities and programming for a diverse audience of all ages. Scissortail Park Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit manages the daily operations and programming for the Park space. Since opening with the Kings of Leon in September of 2019 with the largest outdoor concert audience on record, countless events and programming, from a popular farmers market to large festivals, concerts, art exhibits and to birthday parties, fishing and pollinator programs and much more, have been offered, free of charge to everyone in our community to enjoy.
With the addition in the Lower Park of a soccer field and futsal court along with pickleball and basketball courts, we look forward to offering a diverse menu of athletic-related programming for all ages and working collaboratively with community organizations including the YMCA.
In addition to the MAPS staff and designers, we would like to thank the Maps 3 Advisory Board and its Chair, Tom McDaniel. Also, thanks to the City of Oklahoma City Parks Subcommittee that has helped provide oversight to the Park’s design and development. Committee members include Chair, Kimberly Lowe, Rose Crook, Fred Hall, Maureen Heffernan, Rusty LaForge, Jane Jayroe Gamble, Desmond Mason, Anthony McDermid, Miles Tolbert and Kari Watkins.
The Scissortail Park Foundation Board of Directors, chaired by Jim Tolbert with vice chair, Larry Nichols have provided guidance and oversight for the Foundation’s management of Scissortail Park.

The southern section of Scissortail Park will feature new sports courts including:

A Nature Playground for children and families will provide shady sites to interact with natural materials like boulders, logs, and more to provide endless opportunities for creative play.

“Natural playgrounds or playspaces present more opportunities for exploration, discovery, learning, and play than traditional playgrounds. Natural playgrounds enable children to move freely and creatively around the environment allowing them to explore, run, jump, climb, crawl, touch, smell, etc., helping connect kids with nature, develop gross motor function, fine motor skills, imagination, and social skills, all at the same time.”
- childhoodbynature.com
The Lower Park area will also have extensive natural plantings to represent the prairies of this region with grasses and native wildflowers along winding walking trails. Many existing mature trees were kept and hundreds of new trees have been planted throughout the site for shade and to provide sheltered habitats for wildlife.
Extending from the Upper Park, the Promenade provides guests with a walking and bike path all the way from downtown through the Lower Park to the Oklahoma River trails. Overlook Hill anchors the southern tip of the Park providing beautiful 360-degree views of the downtown skyline and Oklahoma River. These are just a few of the highlights making Scissortail Park a true Core-to-Shore experience.

PATRONIN MEMORIAM
Robbie Kienzle Arts & Cultural Affairs LiaisonTAKING FLIGHT: LIGHT AS A FEATHER
LESLEY CHANG AND JASON KLIMOSKI
Robbie Kienzle devoted her career to the planning and development of placemaking and public art strategies that improve the vitality of public life and transform communities. Robbie started her career with the City as the Public Art Consultant for Oklahoma City’s first Metropolitan Area Projects (MAPS).
In her many placemaking and revitalization roles, Robbie facilitated the installation of over $18 million in public art projects. Notable projects include the Plaza Alley Walls in Plaza District (2014), “Virtual Sky” at the OKC Convention Center (2021), and “Taking Flight: Light as a Feather” at Scissortail Park.
"If you live here, work in Oklahoma City, or are just visiting, your experience has undoubtedly been enriched because of Robbie's work."
Aubrey McDermid Assistant City ManagerThis 31-foot-high, 14,000-pound sculpture resembles a feather floating to the ground. It includes 276 integrated fiber optics with LED lamps to illuminate the piece at night.
It is scheduled to be installed in late 2022/early 2023.
Birds and a Feather
Sponsored by SONIC Foundation
OPENING SEPTEMBER 18
An outdoor art exhibit celebrating local birds by local artists.

Appreciate the beauty and fascination of various birds that live or migrate through our region as depicted by 22 diverse local artists. Enjoy this unique exhibit that is displayed on pole banners placed along our Upper Promenade at Scissortail Park.

We hope this exhibit sparks an interest and curiosity about learning more about birds and how to help sustain them through habitat conservation, tree planting and birdfriendly gardens. The exhibit also showcases a diversity of art styles by local OKC artists.

We anticipate installing the major sculptural work, Taking Flight, as part of the MAPS budget for Scissortail Park. A 31’ tall feather sculpture will no doubt become an instant icon and landmark at the corner of OKC Boulevard and Robinson Ave.

We thought a Birds and a Feather exhibit would help build anticipation and appreciation for the new sculpture.

THE TRASH MONSTER
GABRIEL FRIEDMAN
This Sculpture, made of entirely locally collected litter, is intended to bring attention to the ever-growing problem of trash on a local and global scale. There is a small girl, illustrated by Denise Duong, facing off with the head of a giant trash monster. The girl represents the next generation that will be forced to face the issue of trash pollution. She is facing it down to express that the next generation will have the courage to try to address the issue and make real changes.
