INTRODUCTION – FAMOUS FIRST WORDS

The Greek Shipping Hall of Fame began life 15 years ago as an idea. The first four Inductees were unveiled later the same year, chosen by a 10-person jury representing the industry.

That was how the first 15 Inductees were elected. From the start, we planned a more public presence for the Hall of Fame. We also wanted to give more people in the contemporary Greek shipping community a say in deciding who should be singled out from the annals of the industry for acclaim as one of the “greats”.

These goals were achieved in 2012, when the Greek Shipping Hall of Fame was established as a completely independent entity, and its newly-formed Academy, initially of 200 members, voted for the Inductees of that year. In April 2013 the public inauguration took place. Our website went live the same evening.

The launch event was blessed with a stirring Inauguration Speech by Efthimios Mitropoulos, Secretary General Emeritus of the International Maritime Organization who has since remained close to us as a member of our advisory board.

“As Heroditus, another great Greek, urged us thousands of years ago, ‘great and marvelous deeds [and consequently their creators] must not be forgotten with the passing of time,’” he said that evening. According to Admiral Mitropoulos: “These Greeks, such Greeks, had

to find a home somewhere… as an example for their compatriots of today and as a guiding light to the next generations – for the present Greeks to remember them and future Greeks to learn from them and admire them.”

Since then the Academy has grown to 300 members and they are the ones who elect our Inductees, through on-line voting that is supervised by international auditor Deloitte.

With the addition of the 2021 Inductees, the Hall of Fame now has 36 historic personalities ranging from the 19th century almost to the present day.

Despite the advantage of being virtual, our Hall of Fame still has less than half the number of French national heroes whose remains have been transferred to the Paris Panthéon, France’s highest honour. The Forum of Augustus in Rome was inaugurated in the year 2BC and has been called the first hall of fame. It included 108 statues of great men of Rome’s past, with inscriptions of their achievements, invariably of a political or military nature. Sporting halls of fame have done a lot to popularise the concept for our times. One of the first, the Baseball Hall of Fame, established in 1936 to celebrate America’s national sport, currently has 340 elected members. At the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the number of Inductees has now topped 350.

3

Having 36 Inductees at this stage of our existence is an impressive number, given that Greek shipping even today is overwhelmingly private business activity. A common dispute is whether the Hall of Fame is casting its net too wide or if too many worthy candidates are currently shut out. Such debates go on internally, too, not least among the six highlyknowledgeable members of our advisory board that serves as a pipeline for many of the nominations.

We asked two of them – longstanding Greek Shipping Co-operation Committee Chairman Haralambos Fafalios and internationallyrenowned maritime historian Gelina Harlaftis - to provide a few words for this introduction.

“Over the last 100 years, Greek shipping has produced many memorable and deserving individuals who have left an indelible image on the maritime stage,” wrote Mr Fafalios. “As many were pioneers, we have recognised a large number of them especially from 1945 to 1973, but since then the ranks of the truly great entrepreneurs and shipowners are fewer.”

Given that a core pantheon is already in place, Mr Fafalios is understandably concerned that the honour should not be diluted. A more “selective” approach could include a more glacial pace of one new Inductee annually rather than galloping forward with two per year as we are doing now.

Admitting to being “somewhat old-fashioned” in setting high standards of greatness for induction into the Hall of Fame, Mr Fafalios was also in favour of the advisory board being empowered “to occasionally veto the choice of candidates so as not to cheapen the brand.”

Equally passionate, Ms Harlaftis argues that the foundations for Greek shipping’s rise lie in the 19th and first half of the 20th century. “Who we are today in shipping has been sculpted by our visionary, hard-working and daring ancestors,” she wrote. “However, the history of Greek-owned shipping does not start with the generation of our fathers or even grandfathers. It goes back six-seven-eight not forget who brought us here. We must not limit ourselves to honour just those that we remember, but also those before, whom we have forgotten.”

When it comes to electing Inductees to the Hall of Fame, there may be a bias towards families still in the shipping business today. But, asks Ms Harlaftis, “are we to forget those that had no families to continue or stopped their business a few decades ago?” She summons up dozens of names from the 1830s to the 1940s who, she says, would not disgrace the pantheon.

INTRODUCTION – FAMOUS FIRST WORDS 4

According to Ms Harlaftis, “the Hall of Fame honours the people that brought Greek-owned shipping to the top; it nurtures and guards the memory of Greek maritime culture. And it knows very well that the people who honour their past are those who honour their culture.”

The Greek Shipping Hall of Fame provides a space for constant debate about which achievements are to be cherished most as we compare the past with the present, and which values are likely to serve us well in the future.

Like any Hall of Fame, recognising the industry’s finest is a core mission. Beyond the individuals, though, Greek shipping’s story is a uniquely coherent and dramatic one that deserves to be better known. It continues to this day without any real sign that it is running out of steam and the Hall of Fame intends to be there for the long haul.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our project on its journey so far.

and raw material prices, has created very challenging conditions that our industry has to navigate through.

Disruptions however will create opportunities and freight markets seem robust for at least the near and mid-term. While prudency should always be at the back of everyone’s mind, with hard work, we continue to evolve and succeed.

It has been over two years since the pandemic emerged and the planet still faces unprecedented challenges in an ever-changing environment.

Despite the massive vaccination programme rolled out over the last year, new variants emerged leading to new lockdowns that sustain disruptions to production and the global supply chain, and bottlenecks at main ports and canals continue. These have affected the shipping industry in many ways, raising the complications and costs of shipping to historically high levels. Furthermore, the war in Ukraine is also disrupting the global trading patterns in a scale that is yet to be formed, altering the flow of commodities in both dry bulk and wet trades.

The above, combined with the upcoming environmental regulations, in an unpredictable global economic environment, increased energy

TMS activities range from ship owning, ship management and trading in most shipping segments including dry bulk carriers, oil and product tankers, and LNG carriers.

The ship management activities provide employment for more than 400 people onshore in Greece and abroad and more than 5,500 seafarers.

We take great pride in the expertise we have developed over the years applying the highest technical and maintenance standards applicable.

DINNER SPONSOR – NAVIOS GROUP

Navios Group is a group of public and private companies which operate in the dry bulk, tanker, container, and logistics industries.

The Navios Group is one of the largest USlisted shipping entities with two companies traded on the New York Stock Exchange (Navios Maritime Holdings Inc. (NYSE: NM) and Navios Maritime Partners L.P. (NYSE: NMM).

We find ourselves at the crossroads of historical events. With war ravaging Ukraine, inflation on the rise, Covid still causing disruption and pain for much of the world, we add the challenge of decarbonising the shipping industry.

In these trying circumstances, shipping must continue to serve as the backbone of the transportation system for much of the worlds’ grain and mineral commodities. We feed people and keep them warm. We need to do this regardless.

Our maritime community lives and works in an increasingly complex environment. We believe that the good work of the excellent people at Navios and other companies allows us all to innovate and overcome this difficult environment.

The Group also includes Navios South American Logistics Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Navios Maritime Holdings Inc., one of the largest logistics companies in the Hidrovia region of South America.

For over 60 years, Navios has developed scale and expertise through managing a fleet of approximately 200 vessels. Since 2005, the Navios Group has seen fleet capacity grow by almost 1,000%.

AFTER-DINNER DIGESTIFS – THE TSAKOS GROUP

The Tsakos family originates from the Greek island of Chios and can trace its involvement in shipping to the 19th century.

As a shipping group that has been active now for more than half a century, we are proud to be part of a Greek national shipping tradition that has stood the test of time.

In the knowhow, dedication and service of our people, and our adaptation to the changing demands of the times, we salute the Inductees in the Greek Shipping Hall of Fame as forerunners and kindred spirits. Indeed, many of the personalities recognised by the Hall of Fame were known personally to our family.

The Tsakos Group is therefore delighted to support this year’s Greek Shipping Hall of Fame anniversary event and to offer a touch of Chios to the proceedings!

Founded by Captain Panagiotis Tsakos in 1970, the Tsakos Group has its headquarters in Athens and a global presence from the Americas to the Far East. A DECADE DELIVERING THE HALL OF FAME

Live

Relive with us over the next few pages the last decade of events through just some of our favourite pictures of moments and personalities that made each one special.

2013

The Greek Shipping Hall of Fame was established in 2007 and by the time of the

public launch in April 2013, there were already 18 Inductees. The Inauguration was held at the Megaron, the Athens Concert Hall and our website went ‘live’ the same evening. Shipping minister Kostis Mousouroulis spoke and the official Inauguration Speech was delivered by Efthimios Mitropoulos, Secretary General Emeritus of the International Maritime Organization.

22

MOMENTS AND MEMORIES

Given the importance of London to the development of Greek shipping in the 20th century, it felt right that the Hall of Fame’s second event should take place there. It was held in March 2014 at the Park Lane Hotel, a monument to the art deco style, in London’s most prestigious ballroom of the 1920s and ‘30s, a formative period for Greek shipping.

The event was supported by the Greek Shipping Co-operation Committee and marked our first donation to Hellenic Hope. Stathes Kulukundis gave a ’15 Minutes of Fame’ speech.

A DECADE DELIVERING THE HALL OF FAME

Live

Back in Greece, the annual Induction Ceremony & Dinner for 2015 was held at the Athens Hilton.

A highlight was Ukrainian artist Kseniya Simonova’s stunning sand animation film depicting Greek shipping history, made specially for the Hall of Fame. Kseniya, who won the TV talent contest Ukraine’s Got Talent in 2009, later became world-famous and

an internet-sensation after her sand-art performances thrilled judges in the international champions’ editions of both America’s Got Talent and Britain’s Got Talent.

Greek shipping legend Gregory

2015

Hadjieleftheriadis was guest of honour and gave the ’15 Minutes of Fame’ speech.

24

MOMENTS AND MEMORIES

We returned to the banqueting suite of the Megaron for the first time since the Inauguration and the venue has become the traditional home of the annual event. Among the highlights of the event, the Hall of Fame honoured a special friend, Dutch philhellene Cees van Noort (1947-2021) who became a devotee of Greek shipping through his work

as an officer of the Rotterdam Port Authority. He began taking photographs at 19 and over nearly a half-century took photos of thousands of Greek vessels. In 2016 the Hall of Fame acquired the collection and that year’s event featured many of the pictures in the VanNoort Collection, which we maintain to this day in his memory.

The 2017 Induction Ceremony & Dinner offered something a bit different and ramped up our support for Hellenic Hope. ‘Hollywood At Sea’, an after-dinner auction of four

MOMENTS AND MEMORIES

A packed 2018 event heard Spyros M. Polemis, former chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping, deliver a ’15 Minutes of Fame’ speech discussing the maritime legacy bequeathed by ancient Greece to modern times.

Once again excellently hosted by broadcaster Maria Vassara of Aenaftes, who has been master of ceremonies at six of the Hall of Fame events, the 2019 edition included a tribute to the delightful watercolour portraits of ships by Manuel Kulukundis, one of the

first four legends of Greek shipping inducted into the Hall of Fame back in 2007. Including proceeds from an auction of four Kulukundis

‘originals’, the event raised €44,000 for Hellenic Hope.

MOMENTS AND MEMORIES

In 2020, like most other public gatherings, the Induction Ceremony & Dinner could not shake off the Covid-19 pandemic and so was reimagined as an online event instead. For us, it was an opportunity to bring the story of

modern Greek shipping to a wider audience and more than 2,600 viewers watched the production on YouTube. The documentaryevent was hosted from the deck of Hellas Liberty in the port of Piraeus.

A DECADE DELIVERING THE HALL OF FAME

Live

Freedom! With the world taking uncertain steps out of lockdown, we were able to finally deliver – after some rescheduling – a successful in-person Induction Ceremony 2021 in September.  For the first time, it was an outdoor dinner, held in the Atrium of the Muses courtyard of Megaron, the Athens Concert Hall. For many guests, it

was a first, precious opportunity to socialise at a major event for at least 18 months. The event celebrated 200 years of Greek freedom through a maritime lens, from the war of independence that broke out against the Ottoman Empire in 1821.

Now, I am studying biology and politics in the USA with a full scholarship at Sewanee: The University of the South, in Tennessee. My goal is to return to Greece at some point. I know that being in the States would not have happened if Hellenic Hope had not given me the opportunity to study at the AFS.”

Chrysanthi studies tourist operations at the International University in Thessaloniki. During the summer she takes up internships at tourism related businesses. Chrysanthi says: “I would like to thank Hellenic Hope for the scholarship. It was a chance for me to follow my dream of working in the tourism industry, a field I have been studying for the last 3 years. Through my studies at the American Farm School, I became an independent thinker, and I learned the importance of responsibility.”

From all of us at Hellenic Hope – thank you for your continuing support.

HOW THE INDUCTEES ARE CHOSEN

Choosing the Inductees to the Greek Shipping Hall of Fame annually is through an entirely independent and broadly based induction process open to prominent individuals in the shipping industry.

The Greek Shipping Hall of Fame Academy, the voting body, is an honorary membership organisation intended for the most influential members of the Greek shipping community. It has been formed specifically for the purpose of electing Inductees annually to the Greek Shipping Hall of Fame.

Membership is by invitation only, although inquiries are welcomed. Currently the membership of the Academy consists of about 300 members. The largest contingent of these is shipowners. However, the membership also includes shipping company chief executives, prominent individuals from shipping service sectors such as finance, law, classification, shipbroking, shipmanagement, insurance and others, as well as reputed historians, academics and journalists.

As a general rule, membership is limited to one individual per company so as to maintain a level playing field for voting.

Nominees each year are showcased in a special members’ area of our website. From inception until today only historic individuals who are no longer alive have been eligible for induction.

The new Inductees are announced at the annual Greek Shipping Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and are celebrated on the Greek Shipping Hall of Fame website.

Voting for the Inductees takes place on-line. The procedure is completely transparent and a full copy of the rules for the induction process is available to all Academy members in the members’ area of the site.

The voting procedure is overseen by the international audit firm,

JOHN A. ANGELICOUSSIS (1948-2021)

John Angelicoussis was born in Piraeus in 1948. He attended the Ionidios public school in Piraeus, graduated from Athens University of Economics and Business and then completed the MBA programme at MIT in the United States.

His mother Maria Papalios and father Anthony, who served as a radio officer at sea, both came from the village of Kardamyla in Chios.

However, the Angelicoussis family originated in Kardamyli in Mani and relocated in the middle of the 18th century to northern Chios, as it offered a better vantage point for piratical activities against ships sailing from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean.

In the second half of the 19th century the Angelicoussis family began focusing on legitimate maritime business, first with fishing boats and then in 1891 with a first 292 dwt cargo vessel, Taxiarchis, built in Syros Island.

When John Angelicoussis’ father, Anthony, finished high school he became a radio operator. After the Second World War, Maria persuaded Anthony to start his own shipping business.

Together with two close friends in 1950 he acquired a first cargo vessel Astypalea, of 500 dwt, setting him on the road to becoming one of the most forward-thinking of Greek owners during the decades that followed.

52

2021 INDUCTEE

Anthony continued to expand the business during the 1950s and in 1960 a first Liberty type vessel was acquired. The company started to order newbuildings from IHI Shipyard in Japan. By 1985 a total of 42 dry cargo ships had been delivered and all vessels placed under Greek flag.

John Angelicoussis began his shipping career in 1973 when he joined the family shipping company. “Every year was better than the previous one,” he later said of working with his father.

Having inherited a strong brand name in dry bulk shipping, he became President and CEO of the Angelicoussis Shipping Group in 1989, after the demise of his father.

Despite travelling abroad for a large part of his life, Greece was always in his heart. He believed in its people, their work ethic, their loyalty and the Greek spirit.

Highly intelligent, with spectacular business acumen, in 1992 he founded Kristen Navigation to establish the group’s presence in tankers.

53

JOHN A. ANGELICOUSSIS

(1948-2021)

The following year he proceeded with the first order of capesize bulk carriers. The five vessels from Hyundai Heavy Industries were at that time the largest ships of the kind ever ordered by a Greek shipowner.

In 2000 he decided to expand the tankers sector, with new orders of aframaxes, suezmaxes and very large crude carriers.

In September 2003 he ordered his first liquefied natural gas carrier, the Maran Gas Asclepius, becoming one of the first Greek shipowners to enter this sector. He established Maran Gas Maritime and today it is one of the largest LNG players in the market.

Maran, an amalgam of the names Maria and Anthony, was named for his parents. Later, the brand was also adopted for the tanker and dry bulk fleets, now managed by Maran Tankers Management and Maran Dry Management.

True to his strategy, Angelicoussis became the leading Greek owner in each of his chosen market segments – capesize bulk carriers, large tankers, particularly VLCCs, and large LNG carriers. When he died in 2021, the Angelicoussis Group owned 151 ships across its three sectors of operation and was considered the largest purely private shipping empire worldwide.

2021 INDUCTEE

Extremely perceptive, Angelicoussis read people well and genuinely liked engaging with them, particularly the younger generation. “What makes this company is its people” was his mantra. He kept his door always open, to be of guidance, support and assistance when needed.

Business apart, he was deeply patriotic and concerned for the country and its people. In 2010 he decided to establish the Charitable Foundation Antonios and Ioannis Angelicoussis, aiming to help those in need in Greek society. Since its establishment, the Foundation has provided substantial support to children, hospitals and schools in Greece.

His contribution to the latter-day strength of Greek shipping is widely recognised, not least through his group’s technical excellence and high standard of service to charterers, its longstanding loyalty to the Greek flag and its support for maritime education in Greece.

55

PAUL J. IOANNIDIS (1924-2021)

Paul J. Ioannidis’ first career and vocation was as a pilot but he also made a unique and lasting contribution to the story of Greek shipping, chiefly through championing a new safety culture that he brought with him from the aviation industry.

Paul Ioannidis was born in Berlin to a Cyprusborn father and Greek mother. In 1943, aged 18, he joined the resistance against the German occupation of Greece. Documents showing his German birthplace helped to save his life several times during the war.

He was decorated for his bravery with the King’s Medal for Courage from King George VI and received a commendation from Field Marshal Harold Alexander.

Later he returned the medals in protest after a 1956 incident when the British hanged two Cypriot freedom fighters, Karaolis and Dimitriou, in Nicosia.

In 1944, Ioannidis joined the Royal Hellenic Air Force and was trained as a fighter pilot in Rhodesia by the RAF. Subsequently he joined TAE Greek National Airlines, becoming at the age of 25 the youngest captain in Greek civil aviation.

In 1957 the company was acquired by Aristotle Onassis and renamed Olympic Airways. For Olympic he served as chief instructor and chief pilot, eventually becoming the airline’s director

general. He was also pilot of choice for many Greek and international VIPs. It was Ioannidis who flew the ex-King Constantine into exile in December 1967.

After Onassis’ death, the mutual regard of the two men was reflected by the magnate’s will, which appointed Ioannidis a lifetime member of the board of the Onassis Foundation that he wished established.

Half of Onassis’ estate was left to the Foundation, which was set up to continue Onassis’ business as well as fund a variety of public benefit causes, and half to his daughter Christina.

The shipping fleet was similarly divided. Ioannidis served as chief executive of the Foundation’s shipping and other commercial operations, and he also served as president of all companies owned by Christina Onassis for whom he acted as a father-figure and mentor.

After Christina’s own premature death in 1988, he was an executor of her will and a member of the board of administrators of the estate of her young daughter, Onassis’ grand-daughter, Athina.

57

PAUL J. IOANNIDIS (1924-2021)

In his autobiography ‘Destiny Prevails’, he wrote that he had been in love with the sea ever since he could remember and even as a young child wanted to become a naval cadet.

His path back to the sea had been a circuitous one. But his appointment to head the Onassis Group’s shipping business in 1977 did enable him partially to realise his childhood dream.

With more than 25 years of experience as an instructor on airplanes and simulators behind him, Ioannidis was quick to identify that the safety culture in the maritime industry lagged behind that already being applied in aviation, especially when it came to addressing weakness of the ‘human element’ that was the main cause of most accidents.

Ioannidis introduced superior aviation training methods and culture to shipping to systematically reduce human error. He was tireless in breaking down reservations to the so-called ‘airline concept’ – first at Olympic Maritime and later in sharing the pioneering initiative with the wider Greek shipping community, through the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS) and the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association, Helmepa.

He was a member of the board of the UGS for 26 years, six of these as vice-president. He chaired the UGS training committee for 14 years. He also served as vice-president of Helmepa and headed its training committee.

58

2021 INDUCTEE

The approach to safety and training he introduced spread beyond Greek shipping and even as far as major oil company fleets that copied the Onassis systems. As a whole, the shipping industry did not catch up until the 1990s when the International Safety Management Code was introduced. There was internationalrecognition for Ioannidis’ ideas and his achievements.

He was only the second Greek (after George P. Livanos) to serve on the board of classification society ABS and later he was elected a lifetime member of the ABS Council. He also received Lifetime Achievement awards from Seatrade in 2011 and the Lloyd’s List Greek Shipping Awards in 2017.

While he played a key role in modernising the safety culture of shipping, Ioannidis was an icon of old-fashioned morality – a courageous patriot who did not hesitate to speak truth to the powerful, including Aristotle Onassis, but he was also a kind and committed protector of Onassis’ descendants as well as of the Foundation he left behind.
