It - In questo numero parleremo di Asia, un argomento che ho scelto qualche mese fa sdegnata dall’onda di Asian hate che aveva travolto i social riempiendoli di falsità e bassezze. Sarà che a me, l’odio, dovunque provenga, contro chiunque sia diretto e per qualsiasi motivo, dà sui nervi. Si, avete letto bene. Sui nervi. Il razzismo mi rattrista e mi spaventa moltissimo ma più ancora, mi urtano la stupidità e l’ignoranza da cui è generato. Così, d’impulso, ho deciso di prendere posizione e di raccontare l’Asia per quella che davvero è: diversa per prima cosa. Siamo tutti abituati a realtà come la Cina e il Giappone ma l’Asia è di più, molto di più. Di questo sterminato continente fanno parte paesi di cui molti di noi (ed io per prima) non sanno nulla. Neppure dove trovarli su una cartina. Ci sono così tante culture e tutte millenarie, così tanti stati e popoli e problemi anche! - basti pensare alla situazione politica dell’Afghanistan in questi giorni terribili, o ai contrasti senza fine del Medio Oriente, o ai disagi di territori poverissimi come il Bangladesh, tanto per citarne uno - che non basterebbero tutti i libri del mondo per elencarli. Ma soprattutto ci sono storie bellissime da raccontare sull’Asia: come tradizioni antichissime sopravvivono all’invadenza della tecnologia; in quali modi, così diversi da nostri occidentali, si esprimono i sentimenti; quanto è profondo il senso

en - In this issue we will talk about Asia, a theme I chose a few months ago, furious about the wave of Asian hate that had overwhelmed social networks by filling them with falsehood and vileness. Suppose it’s just me being me, but hate, wherever it comes from, against whoever it is directed and for whatever reason, gets on the nerves. Yes, you read it right. On my nerves. Racism saddens me and scares me a lot, but even more, it hurts me to see the stupidity and ignorance from which it is generated. So, impulsively, I decided to take a stand and tell what Asia really is: different at first. We are all used to realities in China and Japan, but Asia is more, much more. To this vast continent belong countries of which many of us (and I’m the first) know nothing. Nor where to find them on a map. There are so many cultures and all millennials, so many regions and peoples and problems, too -just think of the political situation in Afghanistan in these terrible days, or the endless conflicts in the Middle East, or the struggle of very poor territories such as Bangladesh, to name but onethat not all the books in the world would be enough to list them. But above all there are beautiful stories to tell about Asia: how ancient traditions survive the intrusion of technology; in what ways, so different from our Westerners, feelings are expressed; how deep the sense of belonging is, that characterizes many of its peoples, 31

di appartenenza che caratterizza molti dei suoi popoli e che neppure la scelta di vivere stabilmente all’estero può scalfire. Mentre lavoravo alla rivista ho ascoltato tante testimonianze sull’Asia, di persone che ci erano nate o ci abitavano e, grazie a loro, ho imparato molto più di quello che sapevo delle sue terre e della sua gente. E per prima cosa ho fatto pace con le mie due ex-cognate giapponesi che ho sempre reputato esageratamente schive e silenziose quando invece, probabilmente, a tenerle lontane era solo la mia troppa esuberanza.

Mi sono anche ricordata di quando, ragazza, pur essendo attratta da luoghi come Goa, o Bali o la Thailandia, che ai miei tempi erano mete molto frequentate dai giovani, ne ero però anche spaventata, quasi avessi potuto sparire nel nulla là. Così spaventata che, nonostante ne avessi la possibilità, alla fine non ci sono mai andata. Ed ora, dopo tutto quello che ho appreso, un po’ mi dispiace. Perché quel mondo era lo stesso di Lanterne Rosse o de Il piccolo Budda, o dei tanti documentari (i miei preferiti erano quelli sulla via della seta) che, solo qualche anno dopo, mi avevano invece affascinato tanto da desiderare di prendere il primo aereo e trasferirmici, se nel frattempo non avessi deciso di mettere su famiglia in Italia. Credo che vivendo lì mi sarebbe piaciuto fare la ceramista, specializzarmi nella tecnica raku, la mia preferita. Oppure imparare bene l’origami. Ogni volta che vedo la carta prendere vita dalle mani di qualcuno resto incantata. Oggi vorrei perdermi nella sua vastità e nella sua diversità. Comprendere le sue tante anime.

Visitare i luoghi meno noti, quelli sperduti e dimenticati che mantengono intatto il loro mistero. Spero che questo numero sull’Asia vi appassioni come ha appassionato me. Spero vi faccia nascere la curiosità di saperne di più e la voglia di visitarla. Appena si potrà. Presto, mi auguro.

and which not even the choice to live permanently abroad can scratch. While I was working on the magazine I listened to many testimonies about Asia, about people who were born there or live there and, thanks to them, I learned much more than I knew about its lands and people. And first, I made peace with my two Japanese ex-sisters-in-law, who I’ve always found to be excessively coy and quiet when, in fact, it was probably just my exuberance that kept them away.

I also remembered when, as a girl, although I was attracted to places like Goa, or Bali or Thailand, which in my time were destinations very frequented by young people, I was also frightened, as if I could disappear into thin air there. So frightened that, despite I had the chance, in the end I never went. And now, after all I’ve learned, I’m a bit sorry. Because that world was the same as Red Lanterns or The Little Buddha, or the many documentaries (my favorite were those on the Silk Road) that, only a few years later, had fascinated me so much that I wanted to take the first plane and move there, if in the meantime I hadn’t decided to start a family in Italy. I think living there I would have liked to be a potter, specializing in Raku technique, my favorite. Or learn origami properly. Every time I see the paper come to life by the hands of someone I remain enchanted.

Today I would like to lose myself in Asia’s vastness and diversity. Comprehend his many souls. To visit the lesser-known, remote and forgotten places that keep their mystery intact. I hope this Asia issue gets you as excited as it got me. I hope it will give you the curiosity to know more and the desire to visit it. As soon as possible. Very shortly, I hope.

A DELAYED ARIGATŌ It - Non sono molto preparato sull’argomento Asia, lo ammetto. Non mi sono mai spinto più a Est di Mosca, confondo Hong Kong con Shangai e purtroppo la cucina indiana mi rimane sullo stomaco. Ma ho letto i libri di Murakami, ho imparato a fare i noodles e sulla mia scrivania campeggia una tazza da tè, souvenir di mia madre, che in Cina invece è andata anni fa. Ecco, i suoi racconti rappresentano una sorta di “esperienza asiatica”: ho provato a immaginare il gusto del pollo alle mandorle, l’emozione nell’ammirare l’esercito di terracotta, lo stupore di vedere gli autoctoni chiederle dei selfie (perché scambiata per Sophia Loren secondo lei). Ma non potevo celebrare l’Asia senza un vero approccio. E così ho scavato nella mia memoria ed è comparso improvvisamente Daisuke, ma sì, uno dei miei coinquilini a Bruxelles. Giapponese, un’età indefinita, un lavoro imprecisato: sapevo poco di lui.

Ma mi è rimasto impresso un solo suo gesto di infinità generosità. In casa convivevamo in sei, ognuno di nazionalità diversa, e avevamo pattuito che a rotazione, ognuno di noi cucinasse qualcosa di tipico del suo paese per gli altri. Quando venne il suo turno, ci presentammo a cena, tutto apparecchiato, moltissimi manicaretti sulla tavola, ma lui non era lì. Al suo posto una nota in cui si scusava per la sua assenza ma aveva preso il pomeriggio libero per cucinare e per questo motivo doveva lavorare durante la sera. Non ricordo se ho mai avuto modo di ringraziarlo adeguatamente, per questo motivo lo faccio ora, dedicandogli un mio piccolo pensiero in questo grande numero sull’Asia.

en - I am not very experienced with Asian countries, I must admit. I have never gone further east than Moscow, I confuse Hong Kong with Shanghai and unfortunately I can’t digest Indian cuisine. But I read all of Murakami’s books, I learned how to make home-made noodles and on my desk stands a tea cup, a souvenir from my mother, who traveled to China years ago. Her stories represent a sort of “Asian experience”: I tried to imagine the taste of chicken with almonds, the emotion of admiring the Terracotta Army, the amazement of seeing the natives ask her for selfies (because of mistaken her for Sophia Loren according to her). But I couldn’t celebrate Asia without a real approach.

And so I dug into my memory and suddenly I saw him: Daisuke. Yes, one of my flatmates in Brussels.

Japanese, an indefinite age, an unspecified job: I knew little about him. But one only gesture of infinite generosity remained impressed in my mind. At home we were six, each of different nationalities, and we agreed that in rotation, each of us would cook something typical of his country for the others.

When Daisuke’s turn came, we showed up for dinner, all set up, lots of delicacies on the table, but he wasn’t there. In its place a note in which he apologized for his absence but had taken the afternoon off to cook and for this reason he had to work during the evening.

I don’t remember if I’ve ever had the opportunity to thank him adequately. For this reason I do it now, dedicating him a little thought in this great Asian issue.

It - La prima volta che ho messo piede in Asia è sta-

to per un reportage su una clinica Ayurvedica in Sri Lanka. Erano gli anni ’90 e l’Ayurveda era diventata famosa anche in Europa. Sono partita con Patrizia, la nostra senior editor che è anche una cara amica.

Ai tempi lavoravamo insieme per un magazine di moda che ci aveva commissionato il servizio. La clinica era un luogo meraviglioso, immerso nel verde, con bungalow sulla spiaggia, piscina e pagoda ristorante. È stata un’esperienza indimenticabile, per tanti motivi. Lascio alle parole di Patrizia, che l’ha descritta con garbo e ironia nel suo romanzo PR in Love, il compito di raccontarla. Io, nel libro, sono Claudia. ______________ Le nostre valigie sono le ultime ad arrivare. Claudia e io siamo decisamente provate da dieci ore di volo e da qualche turbolenza di troppo. Fuori dall’aeroporto di Colombo il caldo è soffocante. Un autista ci aspetta e ci guida fuori dalla folla ad un’auto nuova e luccicante che profuma d’incenso ma, ahimè, non ha l’aria condizionata! Il viaggio dura più di due ore e per tutto il tempo Claudia sonnecchia ciondolando la testa come una tartaruga. Io, invece, non riesco ad appisolarmi: fa troppo caldo e mi sento sporca. Dopo aver attraversato un numero infinito di villaggi, ci fermiamo davanti ad un pesante cancello in ferro con tanto di guardia in tenuta militare. Alla reception ci accolgono come fossimo regine e dopo aver preso possesso del nostro bungalow fronte-mare, lascio Claudia a disfare i bagagli e inizio una breve ispezione.

Le stanze dei massaggi sono piccole e avvolte nella penombra, con il tipico letto Ayurvedico di legno intarsiato. Altre sono arredate con vecchie vasche in smalto, e altre ancora sono piene di sacchi di polveri

EN - The first time I set foot in Asia was for a reportage

on an Ayurvedic clinic in Sri Lanka. It was the 1990s and Ayurveda was becoming famous in Europe, too.

I went there with Patrizia, our senior editor who’s also a dear friend. At that time we worked together for a fashion magazine that commissioned us to do the story. The clinic was a wonderful place, surrounded by greenery, with beach bungalows, swimming pools and a restaurant pagoda. It was an unforgettable experience, for many reasons. ______________ I leave it to Patrizia’s words, who described it with grace and irony in her novel PR in Love, the task of telling it. My name in the book is Claudia.

Our luggage is the last one to arrive. Claudia and I are definitely exhausted by a ten hours flight and a few turbulences too much. Outside Colombo’s airport the heat is suffocating. A driver is waiting and leads us out of the crowd to a brand new and shiny car that smells of incense but, alas!, does not have air conditioning. The trip lasts more than two hours and all the time Claudia dozes, her head dangling like a turtle. On the other hand, I can’t sleep: it’s too hot and I feel dirty. After crossing an infinite number of villages, we stop in front of a heavy iron gate with a guard in military uniform. At the reception we are welcomed as queens and after taking possession of our bungalow beachfront, I leave Claudia to unpack and start a short inspection.

The massage rooms are small and wrapped in twilight, with the typical Ayurvedic wooden bed inlaid.

Some are furnished with old enamel bath tubes, and others are full of bags with some brightly colored dust inside and big oil bottles. We are too tired to socialize 45

Nuotiamo, facciamo qualche esercizio di acqua gym e dopo un’oretta, affamate, ci presentiamo a colazione. Sul buffet ci sono vari contenitori con strani intrugli da cui esce l’inconfondibile aroma di curry e cumino. Claudia si riempie il piatto mentre io, che non sopporto le spezie indiane, mi limito a bere del tè con dei biscottini allo zenzero.

A metà mattina incontriamo il primario della clinica. È piccolo e cicciottino, e ha un’aria rassicurante.

Prende il mio polso sinistro e ascolta il battito del cuore per una decina di minuti. Poi è il turno di Claudia.

Risulta che, in entrambe, il Dosha dominante è Kapha, composto da acqua e terra. Questa è la ragione per cui tendiamo ad ingrassare e soffriamo spesso di dolori articolari. Per migliorare la situazione ci viene prescritta una dieta vegetariana accompagnata da lunghi e frequenti massaggi con oli curativi.

Il primo giorno è di preparazione al Purification Day. L’indomani, infatti, ci aspetta la famosa purga che è alla base di qualsiasi trattamento Ayurvedico.

Il massaggio, sincronizzato, è fatto da due terapiste contemporaneamente. Sono giovani e minute, indossano entrambe un sari blu e hanno i capelli raccolti in una lunga treccia nera. Le loro piccole mani scorrono veloci distribuendo litri di olio sul mio corpo e accarezzandone ogni singolo centimetro. Due ore dopo

with the other guests so, after a light dinner, we retire to our room. The next day, at six o’clock, we are awake like crickets. It dawns outside and the white beach is deserted. We slip into our bathing suits and enter a strangely calm ocean. We swim, make some water gym and after a while we approach the breakfast room very hungry. On the buffet there are various containers with strange concoctions from which comes the unmistakable aroma of curry and cumin.

Claudia fills her plate while I, who can’t stand Indian spices, just have tea with ginger biscuits.

In the middle of the morning we meet the primary of the clinic. He is small and chubby, and he looks reassuring. He takes my left wrist and listens to my heart beat for about ten minutes. Then it’s Claudia’s turn.

It turns out that, in both, the dominant Dosha is Kapha, consisting of a combination of water and earth.

This is why we get easily fat and often suffer joint pain. To improve the situation, we are prescribed a vegetarian diet accompanied by long and frequent massages with healing oils.

The first day is preparation for Purification Day. The next day, in fact, we are expecting to take the famous purge that is the basis of any Ayurvedic treatment.

The massage, synchronized, is done by two therapists at the same time. They are young and minute, both wearing a blue sari and have their hair pulled in a long black braid. Their little hands run fast, distributing gallons of oil on my body and caressing every inch of it. Two hours later they cover me with a warm towel and leave. I probably doze off, because I wake up by the light touch of a hand on my face. I open my

Penso che forse sono sporche e un po’ mi vergogno ma poi mi dico che con tutta quella crema non si accorgerà certo di un po’ di cerume!

Termino il mio primo giorno di trattamenti con un bagno d’erbe. Mi sdraio nella vasca e un liquido marrone, caldo e melmoso, dove galleggiano fiori dal profumo inebriante, mi copre quasi completamente.

Nel pomeriggio sonnecchio sul lettino davanti al bungalow con Claudia a fianco. A cena ci servono riso al limone con gli anacardi e delle strane verdure che non riconosco.

Purification day Inizio con il “rice massage”, piccoli sacchetti di garza ripieni di amido di riso e olio curativo che mi vengono picchiettati sulla pelle. Poi di nuovo face massage, bagno alle erbe e pisolino sotto le palme.

Il primario arriva nel nostro bungalow prima di cena con un vecchio astuccio di pelle da cui fa scivolare fuori due palline nere.

“Purification pills” ci dice serio.

Hanno un’aria minacciosa per essere così piccole. E mentre le osservo da vicino, lo sento dire che è stato allestito il bungalow di fianco per una di noi.

Lo guardiamo perplesse.

“Durante la purificazione serve un bagno a testa”

First the cheeks, then the forehead, the nose, the neck and, finally the ears, sticking her fingers in. I think they could be dirty and I feel a little ashamed, but then I tell myself that with all that cream she will not notice a bit of wax! I finish my first day of treatments with a herbal bath. I lie down in the tub and a hot, muddy, brown liquid, where intoxicating scented flowers float, covers me almost completely. In the afternoon I doze on the cot in front of the bungalow with Claudia next to me. We have lemon rice with cashews and some weird vegetables I don’t recognize for dinner.

Purification Day. I start with the rice massage, small bags of gauze filled up with rice starch and healing oil that are tapped on my skin. Then again face massage, herbal bath and a nap under the palm trees. The primary arrives in our bungalow before dinner with an old leather case from which he slides out two black balls. “Purification pills,” he says. They look menacing for so small. And as I look at them closely, I hear him say that the bungalow next door has been set up for one of us. We look at him puzzled. “During the purification you need a bathroom each,” he seriously explains. We strive not to laugh. “Don’t worry,” Claudia answers, “we are very good friends and we have no problem sharing the bathroom.” But he is adamant and, in the end, resigned, we decide to please him. We swallow the pills with a little water, and soon after I move into the other room.

ci spiega serio. Ci sforziamo di non ridere. “Non si preoccupi” risponde Claudia, “siamo molto amiche e non abbiamo problemi a dividere il bagno”.

Ma lui è irremovibile e alla fine, rassegnate, decidiamo di accontentarlo. Ingoiamo le pillole con un po’ d’acqua e poco dopo io mi trasferisco nell’altra stanza. Non so quanto tempo passa, ricordo solo che, ad un certo punto della notte, mi sveglio di soprassalto.

Sono sudata e ho dei fortissimi crampi alla pancia.

Butto giù le gambe dal letto e raggiungo il bagno a tentoni. Ho appena il tempo di cercare l’interruttore della luce e sedermi sulla tazza. Dopo, rimango immobile per qualche secondo cercando di riprendere fiato. Il dolore è passato, sembra che tutto sia tornato normale. La pillola ha fatto il suo effetto. Sto per alzarmi ma gli spasmi riprendono improvvisi, ancora più forti di prima. Mi risiedo. Avverto la terribile sensazione che la “purification” non sarà la passeggiata che mi ero aspettata. E, infatti, è solo l’inizio di una lunga notte di tormento. Tanto lunga e tanto intensa che a un certo punto perdo il senso del tempo.

Tutte le volte che penso sia finito, l’incubo ricomincia.

Dopo ore sono stremata. Non c’è più nulla, dentro di me, che possa essere espulso. Mi trascino fino al letto e resto distesa, immobile. Finché sento la porta aprirsi e la voce di Claudia. Mi chiede come sto ma sono troppo debole per rispondere e dopo qualche minuto avverto il suo corpo scivolare sotto il lenzuolo. Ha il respiro affannoso, non so dove ha trovato la forza di trascinarsi fino alla mia camera! Rassicurate dalla reciproca vicinanza, ci addormentiamo.

some point in the night, I wake up with a rush. I’m sweaty and I’ve got really bad stomach cramps. I just throw my legs off the bed and reach the bathroom groping. I barely have time to look for the light switch and sit on the toilet. Afterwards, I remain motionless for a few seconds trying to catch my breath. The pain has passed, it seems that everything is back to normal. The pill has had its effect. I am about to get up but the spasms resume suddenly, even stronger than before. I sit down again. I sense the terrible feeling that the “purification” will not be the walk I had expected. And, in fact, it is only the beginning of a long night of torment. So long and so intense that at a certain point I lose track of time. Every time I think it’s over, the nightmare starts again. I’m exhausted after hours. There’s nothing left inside of me that can be expelled. I drag myself to the bed and lay still. Until I hear the door open and Claudia’s voice. She asks me how I am, but I am too weak to answer and after a few minutes I feel her body slipping under the sheet.

She is breathless, I do not know where she found the strength to drag herself to my room! Reassured by the mutual closeness, we fall asleep.

When the doctor, the next morning, comes to visit us and feels our pulse, our heart rates are barely audible and the blood pressure is very low. We almost collapsed but now we are perfectly “purified”. The news of our adventure goes around the center. Cooks, waiters, therapists, accountants, even the guards, everyone comes to see us and brings us something as a gift. Some fruit, some biscuit, some image of Ganesh, just some smiles. Never before has such a private

Nei giorni seguenti i benefici della cura cominciano a mostrarsi. Il mio corpo diventa flessuoso e, durante l’ora di yoga, riesce a fare torsioni che credevo impossibili. Passano apatia e sonnolenza, sparisce l’inquietudine e si fa strada un’energia nuova, sana, che mi fa dormire sonni tranquilli e svegliare di buon umore. Perdo peso, le unghie si rinforzano, i capelli si ammorbidiscono, la pelle si illumina, acquista tono ed elasticità. Anche dopo essere tornata a Milano rimango in questo stato di grazia per mesi. Cerco di mantenere la dieta, anche se è difficile in Italia, e ancora di più lo è per Claudia, che ha un marito pugliese più bravo di Cracco”. ______________

Infatti alla fine ho ceduto! Ma da allora ho anche cominciato ad avvicinarmi alle cure naturali, all’omeopatia, allo yoga. E anche se non posso evitare lo stress so di poter sempre contare sulle mie erbe ed essenze curative. La meditazione è diventata un esercizio importante nella mia vita. Insomma, un po’ di Asia è entrata in me e non ne è più uscita.

IT - Una vita in viaggio a scoprire la bellezza di ogni luogo, oggetto, cultura. Conservarla negli occhi e nel cuore e farne fonte di ispirazione continua. A Porto, dove vive e lavora, Alejandra Salvatore è arrivata dall’Argentina passando per l’Arabia Saudita, la Spagna e l’Inghilterra. Nel suo studio, nel centro della città, crea bellissimi giocattoli per bambini (e per coloro che rimangono bambini nel cuore) che tutto il mondo apprezza. Le collezioni di Severina Kids, questo è il nome del brand che ha fondato nel 2010, sono realizzati a mano, ognuno con un particolare diverso, una variazione di stile o di tessuto, che li rende a tutti gli effetti pezzi unici. Un talento passato di generazione in generazione. Sua mamma, e prima ancora di lei, sua nonna, erano appassionate artigiane e lei è cresciuta avvolta dalla creatività, fra persone che disegnavano modelli, cucivano, lavoravano a maglia. Anche il nome che ha scelto per il suo marchio viene da lontano, da un piccolo paese in provincia di Crotone, nell’Italia del sud: Santa Severina. Le sue priorità sono i valori in cui crede: una famiglia forte e unita creata con il marito e il figlio Mateo, la tutela dell’ambiente, per cui ha da subito scelto di utilizzare materiali naturali, organici e riciclati, la gentilezza d’animo e la tolleranza, che si affina vivendo in luoghi e culture diversi da quelli in cui si cresce. Come ci spiega lei stessa parlando degli anni trascorsi in Arabia Saudita.

Se dovessi scrivere un libro intitolato La Mia Asia, quale storia sceglieresti di raccontare?

Scriverei una guida per le persone occidentali che si trasferiscono in Arabia Saudita “La nostra vera vita in Arabia Saudita”. Prima di accettare l’offerta di lavoro di mio marito, abbiamo fatto ricerche e letto molto sulla vita lì e abbiamo sentito storie di ogni tipo. Ma anno dopo anno abbiamo sviluppato la nostra esperienza, e scoperto che molte cose delle cose che ci avevano raccontato non erano vere. Ci sono tante informazioni sui blog e molti gruppi di espatriati online, ma sarebbe bello sapere fin dall’inizio alcune cose reali utili per le famiglie che si spostano lì.

Cosa porti ancora nel cuore dell’Arabia Saudita?

Nuove amicizie e la conoscenza di una cultura completamente diversa dalla mia.

Come vive un’artista, e in particolare un’artista donna, a Riyadh?

Ad essere onesti la vita è cambiata molto durante i cinque anni e mezzo che ho vissuto in Arabia Saudita (dal 2012 al 2018), e continua a cambiare. Le donne

In Porto, where she lives and works, Alejandra Salvatore arrived from Argentina via Saudi Arabia, Spain and England. In her studio in the city center, she creates beautiful toys for children (and for those who remain children in their heart) that the whole world appreciates. The collections of Severina Kids, this is the name of the brand she founded in 2010, are handmade, each of them with a different detail, a variation of style or fabric, which makes them truly “one of a kind”. A talent passed on from generation to generation. Her mother, and even before her, her grandmother, were passionate artisans and she grew up surrounded by creativity, among people designing, sewing and knitting. Even the name she chose for her brand comes from far away: a small town near Crotone, in southern Italy: Santa Severina. Her priorities are the values she believes in: a strong and united family, created with her husband and son Mateo; preserving the environment (from the very start she chose to use natural, organic and recycled materials); kind soul and tolerance, a quality refined by living in places and cultures other than those she grew up in. As she explains herself, speaking about the years she stayed in Saudi Arabia.

If you were going to write a book titled My Asia, which story would you choose to tell?

“Our real life in Saudi Arabia”. I would write a guide for western people moving there. Before accepting my husband’s job offer, we did research and read a lot about living in Saudi Arabia and we’ve heard all kinds of stories. But year after year we shaped our own experience there, and lots of things we heard before weren’t true. There are many blogs and expat groups online, but it would be nice to know from the very beginning some helpful real stuff for families moving there.

What do you still carry in the heart about Saudi Arabia?

New friendships and the understanding of a completely different culture.

lottano per i loro diritti e tre anni fa, ad esempio, hanno ottenuto il diritto di guidare e di viaggiare all’estero senza il permesso dei genitori o dei mariti. Penso che ci siano così tante donne di talento che si danno da fare per esprimersi in modo più libero in molti aspetti. Stanno per accadere grandi cose.

Quando vivevo lì ho scoperto il lavoro dell’artista saudita Manal Aldowayan, il suo lavoro è molto potente, e la sua arte esprime anche le sue idee politiche per quanto riguarda la situazione delle donne nel suo paese d’origine.

Quanto importante è stata questa esperienza di vita per il tuo lavoro?

In termini di ispirazione è stata incredibile, ogni nuova esperienza e nuova sensazione era una porta spalancata su nuovi disegni, nuovi colori, nuove forme.

Quale ispirazione ti ha portato?

Ricordo, per esempio, la prima volta nel deserto. Mi hanno stupito la sua luce e i suoi colori, un’esperienza particolare che ha plasmato la tavolozza dei colori delle mie collezioni in quegli anni.

Quale produzione (oggetto, collezione…) è particolarmente legata a quel periodo?

Per me, quello è stato il momento perfetto per prendermi cura di mio figlio Mateo e del mio “secondo figlio” che è il mio lavoro. Durante i miei anni lì, ho partecipato a fiere internazionali e ho trovato il modo per far crescere il mio marchio. Improvvisamente mi sono immersa in un nuovo universo privato dove ho avuto il tempo e la capacità di iniziare a plasmare il team e il progetto che Severina Kids è oggi.

Una volta lasciata l’Arabia Saudita, il globetrotter che è in me era così forte che ho sviluppato la collezione “Viaggiamo per il mondo” dove convergevano tutti gli anni vissuti all’estero e la certezza che il mio viaggio non si fermava lì. Il mio viaggio interiore, la mia capacità di adattamento a nuove “case” e di godere dei diversi aspetti dei paesi in cui abbiamo scelto di vivere, mi aiuta a far crescere quella collezione fino ai giorni nostri. A volte penso che sarà una specie di collezione permanente che cresce con gli anni, crescendo con me.

Cosa ti è mancato maggiormente della cultura occidentale nel tuo soggiorno in Asia?

To be honest, life changed a lot during the five and a half years I lived in Saudi Arabia (from 2012 to 2018), and it keeps changing. Women have been fighting for their rights and three years ago for example they achieved the right to drive and to be able to travel abroad without the permission of their parents or husbands. I think there are so many talented women moving forward to demand their way to express themselves in a freer way in many aspects. Great things are about to come yet. When living there I discovered the work of Saudi artist Manal AlDowayan.

Her work is very powerful, overlapping art with her political statement regarding the women situation in her home country.

How important was this life experience for your work?

In terms of inspiration it was incredible, every new experience and new feeling was an open door to new designs, new colors, new shapes.

What inspiration did it bring to you?

I remember, for example, the first time we went to the desert, I was amazed by its light and colors, a particular experience that shaped the color palette for my collections during those years.

Which production (object, collection...) is particularly linked to that period?

For me, it was the perfect time to take care of my son Mateo and my “second child” that is my brand.

During my years there I attended international trade shows and I found the way to grow my brand. Suddenly I was immersed in a new private universe where I had the time and the perspective to start shaping the team and the kind of growing project that Severina Kids is today.

Once I left Saudi, the “globetrotter me” was so strong that I developed the collection “Let’s travel the world” where all the years lived abroad converged and the certainty that my travel didn’t stop there. My inner traveller, my capacity of adaptation to new “homes” and to enjoy the different aspects of the countries we chose to live in, makes me keep growing that collection to present days. Sometimes I think it will be a kind of permanent collection growing with the years, growing with me.

All’inizio tutto era così nuovo, così diverso che è stata un’esperienza molto intensa (in senso buono) e affascinante per me, e non ho avuto mai avuto la sensazione che mi mancasse qualcosa. L’unica cosa, forse, era un buon bicchiere di vino di tanto in tanto. Ma, parlando seriamente, durante i nostri cinque anni lì, abbiamo viaggiato all’estero molto spesso, e trovato il perfetto equilibrio tra lo stile orientale e occidentale.

Cosa invece, hai vissuto lì, che qui ti manca?

La sensazione avventurosa di viaggiare in territori così estranei a noi, di culture così diverse. E il cibo arabo!! Non è così facile da trovare, qui a Porto.

Come trascorrevi la tua giornata?

Con mio marito abbiamo scelto di non vivere in un complesso occidentale ma abbiamo affittato una bella casa in un quartiere vicino alla scuola di nostro figlio. Significava che per me la vita era abbastanza “normale”. Una volta che i miei uomini uscivano di casa, molto presto la mattina, passavo il tempo nel mio studio a lavorare su nuove collezioni, illustrazioni, materiale grafico per il mio sito web o social media. In quegli anni ho sviluppato interessanti collaborazioni con altri brand.

Alcuni giorni, poiché esiste una comunità internazionale molto grande, trascorrevo la mattina con gli amici, visitando i mercati locali come la Princess Souk o partecipando ad alcuni eventi sociali o culturali.

I pomeriggi volavano tanto ero assorbita dalle attività di mio figlio dopo la scuola. E siccome in Arabia Saudita tutto inizia molto presto (l’alba è intorno alle 4 del mattino in estate e prima delle 6 del mattino in inverno...) intorno alle sei del pomeriggio, mio marito tornava già a casa, Quindi cucinavamo insieme e ci divertivamo in famiglia.

What did you miss most about Western culture during your stay in Asia?

At the very beginning everything was so new, so different that it was a very intense (in a good way) and a fascinating experience for me, and I had no time to miss anything. What I missed was a good glass of wine from time to time. Now, seriously speaking, during our 5 years there, we travelled abroad very often, in that way we had the perfect balance between the Oriental and the Occidental ways.

What instead, that you lived there, now do you miss here?

I miss that adventurous feeling of traveling territories so foreign to us, of such different cultures. And the Arabic food!! It’s not so easy to find it here in Porto.

How did you spend your day?

With my husband we chose not to live in a compound (small closed neighbourhoods with western amenities), instead we rented a lovely house near our son’s school. It meant that for me it was a pretty “normal” life. Once my guys left home very early in the morning I used to spend my hours in my studio working on new collections, illustrations, graphic material for my website or social media. During those years I developed interesting collaborations with other brands.

Some days, as the international community there is huge, I spent the morning with friends, visiting local markets like the Princess Souk or attending some social or cultural events.

Afternoons flew by, absorbed in my son’s after school activities, and as everything there starts very early (the sunrise is around 4am in summer and before 6am in winter…) the good thing is that around 6:00 pm my husband arrived home, so we used to cook together and enjoy our family time.

Essendo una delle città più care al mondo, sono soprattutto i benestanti a trasferirsi qui, e non c’è da stupirsi che i loro figli frequentino scuole private. La competizione è dappertutto. A scuola bisogna dare ottimi risultati, e il tempo “libero” viene occupato da attività fino a tarda sera che sono necessarie a tenere il passo con il proprio status sociale. Ma esistono delle scappatoie. Rifugi artistici in cui liberare la propria mente. E una volta varcata la soglia (i bimbi al di sotto di una certa altezza entrano gratis) le enormi sale espositive diventano un parco giochi per l’intero pomeriggio.

Al Museo Powerlong invitanti e coloratissimi cuscini rotondi ti invitano a sedere per terra e guardare da lì le esposizioni (i Cinesi apprezzano tutto ciò che è conveniente). Non sono solo delle comode sedute ma

anche uno strumento di divertimento, dovreste vedere le piccole manine dei bambini che si divertono a impilarli e riassettare. Per poi correre lungo le scale e i vasti corridoi del museo in cerca di nuove stanze in cui giocare.

Il Museo Long si trova in un’area già di per sé a misura di bambino: a destra della West Bund, il lungofiume con lo skate park, il campo da picnic, il muro per l’arrampicata e il camioncino dei gelati in cui mangiare il miglior frozen yoghurt della città.

Con le sue pareti altissime il Museo può ospitare installazioni fino al soffitto. Onde evitare il torcicollo, sono stati piazzati degli enormi pouf che formano un’area relax dove i piccoli trovano solitamente un ambiente confortevole per passare il tempo.

isti milionari che aprono galleria private, c’è sempre spazio disponibile per l’arte.

I curatori d’arte occidentali potrebbero lamentare una mancanza di organizzazione. Le esposizioni qui non seguono un ordine cronologico o tematico. Ma forse è proprio questo che sembra allettante per i più piccoli. La loro intuizione li porta ad interessarsi delle singole opere e non del loro contesto. Avete mai parlato con un bambino di un quadro o di una statua? Loro percepiscono quello che vedono di fronte ai loro occhi, immaginano storie tutte loro e ridono dei dettagli. Così l’opera artistica assume una nuova e interessante identità.

Viene in mente una domanda ragionevole: chi protegge le opere d’arte? Vedere un bambino di 5 anni giocare accanto a una statua gigante di Buddha fatta di bastoncini di legno evoca scenari catastrofici. Ma

con una popolazione di 27 milioni di persone, Shanghai è preparata a ogni tipo di comportamento. C’è una squadra di cosiddetti “baoans”, tipi amichevoli in uniforme scura, che ha il compito di sorvegliare questo formicaio urbano composto da bambini, genitori, animali da compagnia… e non solo nei musei, ma anche nelle strade, in metro, nei parchi. Con loro intorno si sta al sicuro, perché i bambini possono correre liberi senza la paura di incorrere in motociclette o veicoli, cosa molto probabile in una città trafficata come questa.

All’interno degli spazi espositivi non solo l’arte è protetta, ma anche la libertà dei più piccoli. Quella di muoversi, Di scoprire. Di esplorare. Di immaginare.

Di immergersi in un mondo di colori, forme e suoni, con nuove emozioni ad accompagnare questa esperienza.

EN - Growing up in Shanghai can have many faces. As one of the most expensive cities in the world, mainly the wealthy move here, sending their kids to private schools. Competition is a big thing. Daily schedules are strict, school routine is tough and after school time is packed with activities until late in the evening to keep up with the current school requirements and social status.

But there are these loopholes. Arty hideouts to free your mind. And once you’ve passed the entry (kids under a certain height are free), spacious exhibition halls become your playground for the infinity of the afternoon.

At Powerlong Museum colorful round cushions invite to sit down on the floor and enjoy the exhibits (Chinese people appreciate everything convenient), and these seat pads even seem happy to be rearranged and piled by little skillful hands. There are long stairs and vast corridors to curiously run along and find the 62

doorway to the next hall of possibilities.

The Long Museum is already located in a child-friendly area: right at the West Bund, Shanghai’s cultural river promenade, with a skater park, a meadow for picnics, an open air climbing wall and an ice cream truck with probably the best frozen yoghurt in town.

With its super high walls the Long museum is able to display super large installations right up to the ceiling.

Oversized beanbags form a comfy chill-out area to observe and enjoy without getting a stiff neck and of course provide a cozy playground for kids.

There is a long list of inspiring art museums, like the Power Station of Art, the China Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai, just to name a few. And thanks to Chinese billionaires collectors who open private art museums, like Xu Jiankang (Powerlong) or Liu Yiqian (Long), there is always enough space for playing and displaying.

ture. Exhibits seem to be randomly positioned, unlike in Western museums, where everything has an order, a timeline, is themed. And maybe this is what makes it appealing for kids: as they follow individual objects intuitively, they jump right into experiencing them.

Have you talked to kids about a painting or a statue?

They refreshingly take out the seriousness. First they soberingly perceive what is actually there. And then they build stories around it and laugh about details.

The objects develop a whole new identity, regardless of what the artist originally intended to express.

A reasonable question occurs: Who protects the exhibits? Seeing 5-year-olds play next to a giant lying buddha statue made of wooden sticks, evokes connotations of stability and the thought: will it be comedy or tragedy if one missing stick transforms the statue into a campfire model? But with a population of 27 million people, Shanghai is prepared for chaotic behavior. This lovely urban anthill is constantly watched

by so-called “baoans”, mostly friendly guys in dark uniforms.. They make sure everybody is doing as he should, adults and kids, people with dogs or motorbikes, in parks, in the subway, on the street. They can be strict as pedantic policemen, but with kids in museums they are surprisingly relaxed. In the spacious areas children can run around freely, with no motorbike or car getting on the sidewalk and in the way, which -given Shanghai’s busy traffic- happens all the time. It’s too dangerous to let kids walk the way to school on their own, wheeled road users tend not to stick to general regulations. But inside these walls not only art is protected. The kids’ freedom is, too. Freedom to move. To discover. To explore. To imagine. To immerse themselves in a world of colors and shapes and sounds, and new emotions accompanying their experience.

IT - Dalla Corea con amore. Raccontaci la tua storia.

Sono venuta a Milano per studiare e non pensavo affatto che avrei vissuto qui. Ma poi ho incontrato mio marito e mi sono innamorata di lui, del suo bellissimo paese e della sua cultura.

Cosa rappresenta la moda nella tua vita e nella vita dei tuoi figli?

Mia madre lavorava nel campo della moda e, fin da quando ero una teenager, mi portava con sé alle fiere di moda. Da bambina ho persino dormito su tessuti e modelli, di notte! La moda fa parte della mia vita non solo perché è il mio lavoro ma perché è uno dei miei grandi amori. Penso sarà lo stesso per i miei figli, Juno e Noah, che sono già stati con me a Parigi e New York durante le fashion weeks.

EN - Tell us your story.

I came to Milan to study, not at all thinking I was going to live here. But then I met my husband and fell in love with him and his beautiful country and culture.

What does fashion represent in your life and in your children’s life?

My mom was working in the fashion field and she used to take me to fashion fairs with her since I was a teenager. As a baby I even slept on fabrics or samples at night! Fashion is just part of my life, not only as my job, but as one of my biggest loves. I think it would be the same with my children, Juno and Noah, who’ve already been to Paris and New York fashion weeks with me while I was working.

What do you miss the most about your country?

Cosa ti manca di più del tuo paese?

Vivo in Italia da circa quattordici anni, sono abbastanza “italianizzata” e ho buoni amici qui. Ma a volte mi piacerebbe farmi una risata o bere una birra con gli amici con i quali ho condiviso la mia giovinezza e la mia infanzia.

Qual è la più grande differenza culturale tra Occidente e Oriente?

Mio marito ha notato che non dico quasi mai “NO”.

Nella mia cultura è maleducato rifiutare la richiesta di qualcuno con una parola così corta e forte.

C’è qualche paese asiatico in cui non sei mai stata ma che ti piacerebbe visitare, e perché?

Sicuramente Indonesia, Bali. Voglio mostrare ai miei figli il clima e il mare tropicale.

Quali suggerimenti dareste ai genitori che visitano Seoul con i loro figli?

Il LOTTE WORLD TOWER, con i suoi 123 piani e 555m di altezza ha una vista che domina tutta la città. Il KIDS CAFÉ con aria purificata sterilizzata e arredo di lusso è un luogo dove le mamme possono rilassarsi mentre i bambini giocano. E non dimenticate di fare shopping da BTS. Alle mamme coreane piace vestire bene i loro figli e lì si possono trovare capi davvero belli e unici.

A quale eredità della tua cultura non rinunceresti mai?

Alla pace, alla pazienza e alla mia lingua. Ho cresciuto i miei figli bilingue perchè comprendessero le mie origini.

I’ve been living in Italy for about 14 years now, I am pretty “italianized” and have good friends here. But sometimes I would just like to have a laugh or a beer with friends I shared my youth and childhood with.

What is the biggest cultural difference between Western and Eastern?

My husband noticed that I almost never say “No”. In my culture it’s kind of impolite to decline someone’s request in one word so short and strong.

Is there any Asian country you’ve never been to, but would like to visit and why?

Definitely Indonesia, Bali. I want to show my kids the tropical weather and sea.

What suggestions would you give to parents visiting Seoul with their children?

The LOTTE WORLD TOWER, with its 123 floors and 555m height, has a full view of the city. The KIDS CAFÉ with purified air, sterilized utensils and luxurious seats is a place for moms to relax while kids play. And don’t forget to shop at BTS. Korean moms like to dress up their kids and you can find unique and beautiful items.

What heritage of your culture would you never give up?

Peace, patience and language. I’ve put lots of effort into raising my kids bilingually, wishing that someday they can understand the culture their mom comes from.

Cosa, o chi, ha ispirato il tuo impaginato in questo servizio?

Per l’apertura ho voluto rendere omaggio con un gioco tipografico a Fabien Baron, uno dei direttori artistici contemporanei più influenti, un talento assoluto che ha rivoluzionato la veste grafica dell’editoria di moda e non solo.

Quali emozioni vivi nel tuo lavoro editoriale?

Impaginare un servizio fotografico è come stendere la sceneggiatura di un film dove i fotogrammi si susseguono e svelano la storia. Un vero e proprio storytelling visivo.

Mi emoziono, e mi sento anche molto orgogliosa, quando i fotografi con i quali lavoro mi chiamano felici perché il mio impaginato ha dato nuova vita ai loro scatti.

Quali caratteristiche impieghi nella tua professione?

Cerco di intervenire sulle pagine con il mio stile, senza mai prevaricare quello della fotografia, utilizzando, dove necessario, strumenti come scritte calligrafiche o disegni che realizzo personalmente, oppure cornici, grafiche, colori, tutto ciò che può dare risalto o valorizzare gli scatti e la storia. _______ _______ __

What, or who, inspired your layout in this story?

I opened with a typing title in homage to Fabien Baron, one of the most influential contemporary art directors, an absolute talent who has revolutionized the graphics of fashion publishing.

What emotions do you feel in your editorial work?

Creating a layout for a photo shooting is like writing the script of a movie where the frames follow one another and reveal the story. A real visual storytelling.

I get emotional, and I feel also quite proud, when the photographers I work with call me showing happiness because my layout has given new life to their shots.

What characteristics do you use in your profession?

Mi piacciono le persone, la bellezza dei paesaggi e il cibo incredibile.

Indonesia, Bali in particolare. Ho letto libri e film ambientati e realizzati lì, e so tutto della loro cultura e di come sia particolare. È il primo posto che voglio visitare con la mia bimba una volta che si potrà di nuovo viaggiare liberamente.

Qual è stata l’esperienza sul set che ti ha ricordato di più l’Asia?

Ho realizzato mille dischetti di carta, che ho incollato e appeso al soffitto.

Ho illuminato tutti questi dischi con una calda luce arancione e mi sembrava di ammirare la fioritura dei ciliegi per cui il Giappone è tanto famoso. _______ _______ __

Indonesia, Bali in particular. I have read books set there, seen films made there and read about the culture and how it is unlike anywhere else.

It’s the next place that I’d like to travel to with my little girl once travel opens up.

What was the experience on the set that reminded you most of Asia?

I made hundreds of tissue paper discs, glued together and suspended from the ceiling to the floor. As I lit the discs with a warm orange light the space reminded me of the cherry blossoms that Japan is famous for.

What’s the story behind your story?

My story started with drawing, it has always been the easiest way to express myself and understand the world. My path was forged by Visual Arts, and got me to what I am today: an illustrator.

My references go through Edward Hopper and Norman Rockwell, their paintings and illustrations make me understand composition and colors.

La mia Asia è...

Anche se sono nata in Giappone, dove mi trovo in questo periodo con la mia famiglia a causa del Covid, scelgo Shanghai, Cina, che per me è casa 2009. Ma per i miei figli, Manon e Oki, sicuramente la Thailandia, dove andiamo ogni anno per le vacanze.

Un paese (dell’Asia) dove non sei mai stato ma ti piacerebbe visitare e perché.

Sono stata in tanti paesi asiatici! Dalla Corea del Sud all’India, dal Pakistan al Bangladesh, e poi in Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Singapore, Malesia, Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, Filippine, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Turchia, Kazakistan, Kirghizistan e Uzbekistan. Direi che quello che vorrei visitare ora è l’Iran, per vedere i loro incredibili tessuti e architetture islamiche.

Quale è stata l’esperienza vissuta sul set che più ti ha ricordato l’Asia?

Assolutamente il Bhutan! Sono andata in Bhutan circa 15 anni fa da sola e, a quel tempo, tutti i locali indossavano i loro vestiti belli tradizionali.

My Asia is...

Even if I was born in Japan where I’m actually staying with my family because of Covid, I will say ShangHai, China, my home since 2009. But for my children, Manon and Oki, surely Thailand, where we go every year for vacation.

A country (of Asia) where you have never been but you would like to visit and why.

I have been to so many Asian countries! From South Korea to India, from Pakistan to Bangladesh, and then Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippine, Taiwan, Hongkong, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The one I would like to visit might be Iran, to see their amazing fabrics and Islamic architecture.

What was the experience on the set that reminded you most of Asia?

Absolutely Bhutan! I went to Bhutan about 15 years ago by myself and at that time, all the locals were wearing their traditional beautiful clothes.

Well, the truth is that this season we didn’t want to disturb them for a fashion shooting… it seems in fact they have fully dedicated themselves to a practice that has its origins in Asia: YOGA! 183

Since they discovered it, they can no longer detach from the mat... meditation first, then sun salutation and off with all the asanas.

And you? Are you familiar with yoga? It seems to be more and more popular, because it is good for your health. We have tried it for a year, during office routine, and we can assure you that after an hour of practice we were more energetic and at the same time relaxed with the day going by as smooth as oil.

In addition, it amuses children so much that in recent years several schools have decided to include the practice of yoga in class. Among the benefits it brings there are the stimulation of concentration and learning, the development of awareness and socialization, the reduction of stress and anxiety.

It should not be underestimated that all the hours dedicated to yoga are subtracted from videogames, mobile phones, TikToks and tablets.

Da quando lo hanno scoperto, non riescono più a staccarsi dal tappetino… prima meditazione, poi il saluto al Sole e via con tutte le asana.

E voi? Avete dimestichezza con lo yoga? Sembra essere sempre più diffuso, perché fa bene.

Noi, che lo abbiamo provato per un anno, inserendolo tra le ore di ufficio, vi assicuriamo che è così: dopo un’ora di pratica eravamo più energici e allo stesso tempo rilassati con la giornata che scorreva liscia come l’olio.

In più diverte moltissimo i bambini tanto che diverse scuole negli ultimi anni hanno deciso di inserire la pratica dello yoga nelle ore di lezione. Tra i benefici che apporta troviamo lo stimolo alla concentrazione e all’apprendimento, lo sviluppo della consapevolezza e della socializzazione, la riduzione di stress e ansia. È da non sottovalutare poi che tutte le ore dedicate allo yoga sono sottratte ai videogame, al cellulare, ai TikTok e ai tablet.

E allora che dire, questo è un invito ad indossare la tuta (che sia cool però!), a prendervi un momento, magari in famiglia, e a provare le varie posizioni, l’albero, l’aquila, il guerriero ed il cobra. Che nomi accattivanti che ha lo Yoga, vero?

Ci vogliono passione, determinazione, tempo e tanta voglia di imparare per diventare una fashion buying director come Tiffany Hsu di Mytheresa, il colosso tedesco dell’e-commerce. E poi amare la moda, naturalmente.

Lei, ad appena quindici anni, è stata folgorata da una collezione di John Galliano e da allora si è impegnata per conquistare il suo posto in quel mondo. Per prima cosa si è trasferita da Taiwan, il suo paese d’origine, a Londra, dove vive tuttora e dove ha frequentato il Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design laureandosi in fashion design, per poi conseguire un Master all’Istituto Marangoni di Milano. A lei abbiamo chiesto di raccontare l’Asia come la ricorda e la conserva nel cuore. Come la moda abbia cambiato la sua vita e cosa le piaceva indossare da bambina.

TIFFANY HSU It takes passion, determination, time and a great desire to learn to become a fashion buying director as Tiffany Hsu from Mytheresa, the German e-commerce giant. And love for fashion, of course. When she was just fifteen, she was dazzled by a John Galliano collection and since then she has worked to conquer her place in that world. First she moved from Taiwan, her home country, to London, where she still lives and where she attended the Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design graduating in fashion design, and later obtained a Master at the Marangoni Institute in Milan. We asked her to talk about Asia as she remembers it and keeps it in her heart. How fashion changed her life and what she liked wearing as a child.

ita - Cosa è rimasto della quindicenne di Taiwan, nella sofisticata donna londinese che sei ora?

Quali opportunità offre un paese come Taiwan rispetto a Londra?

Essere taiwanese è sempre stato molto radicato in me. Ho mantenuto i valori e la filosofia del mio paese d’origine come fondamento del mio modo di vivere, indipendentemente da dove io mi trovi. E naturalmente sono ancora un grande fan del suo cibo!

Penso che oggi Taiwan offra più o meno le stesse opportunità degli altri paesi occidentali. Naturalmente, poiché Taiwan è un paese più piccolo del Regno Unito, alcune compagnie o settori non sono così grandi o sviluppati.

Cosa rappresentava, per te, la moda allora rispetto ad ora?

C’è un luogo, in Asia, che non conosci e ti piacerebbe visitare o dove vorresti vivere per un po’ di tempo?

Ero abbastanza giovane quando ho lasciato casa e tutto questo interesse nei confronti della moda nasce dalle riviste che leggeva mia mamma e dagli spettacoli americani e giapponesi che guardavo in TV. Sono anche cresciuta leggendo i Manga, cosa che, sicuramente, mi ha influenzato fin da bambina. Ero un vero e proprio maschiaccio e quei primi incontri con la moda rimangono parte della mia personale estetica di stile ancora oggi.

Cosa ti manca del tuo paese d’origine?

Mi manca decisamente il cibo, e la comodità di averlo come vuoi e quando vuoi. La cucina taiwanese ha una lunga storia ed è influenzata da diverse cucine orientali, oltre ad essere una parte molto importante della nostra vita. Inoltre mi manca la cordialità e l’accoglienza calorosa riservata a chi torna a casa.

Ci sono sicuramente molti luoghi che mi piacerebbe visitare in Asia. Per viverci un po’ di tempo, però, sceglierei il Giappone perché ha influenzato tantissimo la mia crescita, e resta ancora uno dei paesi più affascinanti che mi sia capitato di conoscere.

Riesci a riconoscere la tua parte “asiatica” e quella “occidentale” nelle tue scelte lavorative?

Non credo. Fin da piccola i miei genitori mi hanno insegnato ad amare l’arte e il design, un campo in cui erano personalmente coinvolti. Non credo che l’amore abbia limiti di cultura.

Esistono collezioni di moda bambino che nascono da una comunione di stili e culture?

Gucci è una delle collezioni più internazionali nel segmento del bambino.

Cosa ami di più della cultura occidentale?

Qui, a Londra, mi sono sempre sentita me stessa, unica, incoraggiata a dire quello che penso. E poi c’è un facile accesso all’arte, ai film, e la musica non è mainstream.

Come convivono in te retaggi, tradizioni, influenze, stili di vita differenti?

La mia educazione taiwanese è ancora il fondamento di me come persona. Ma il mio modo di pensare e di conoscere si basa molto su quello che ho vissuto nel mondo occidentale.

Secondo te, i sogni dei bambini sono gli stessi a prescindere da dove si vive o si cresce?

Sicuramente, se hanno lo stesso accesso alle risorse e alle informazioni, penso che anche i loro sogni siano gli stessi, indipendentemente da dove provengano.

Se tu fossi ancora una bambina, cosa non mancherebbe nel tuo armadio - e in quello del tuo amico del cuore - questo inverno?

Per me sarebbe un abito di ispirazione vittoriana di Paade Mode. Non sono mai stata molto femminile, ma il mio capo preferito di sempre era un abito a fiori marrone con le rifiniture in pizzo. Per un bambino un piumino Moncler Enfant.

Salutaci con un augurio tipico del tuo paese d’origine.

Avete mangiato?! Amiamo ospitare la gente. Le nostre vite ruotano attorno al cibo e alla famiglia, così, chiedere a qualcuno se ha mangiato, è il nostro modo di fargli sapere che ci preoccupiamo del suo benessere.

eng - What’s left of the 15-year-old from Taiwan in the sophisticated London woman you are now?

Being Taiwanese has always been deeply rooted in me.

I have kept a lot of the values and the philosophy as the base of my way of life, regardless where I am. And of course I am still a big fan of the food.

What did fashion represent to you in those years compared to now?

What opportunities does a country like Taiwan offer compared to London?

I think today Taiwan offers pretty much the same opportunities as other Western countries. Of course certain industries and sectors are not as big or prominent as it’s a much smaller country compared to the UK. Is there a place in Asia that you don’t know and would like to visit or where you would like to live for a while?

I was quite young when I left home so all my exposure to fashion stems from my mother‘s magazines and American and Japanese TV shows. I also grew up reading Manga so I think that has definitely influenced me as a child. I was a real tomboy and those early encounters with fashion remain part of my personal style aesthetic until today.

There are definitely a lot of places I am yet to visit in Asia. If I were to live there for a while I would choose Japan, as I grew up with a lot of Japanese influences and it still is one of the most fascinating countries that I have ever travelled to.

What do you miss about your country of origin?

I don’t think so. I think I loved art and design as a child as my parents were involved in it and I don’t think the love of that has any culture boundaries.

I definitely miss the food and the convenience of it getting everything you want whenever you want it. Taiwanese cuisine has a long history and is influenced by many different oriental cuisines and that is also a very important part of our life. Also I miss the friendliness and welcoming attitude of the people back home.

What do you love the most about Western culture?

I think this is a very London thing: I have always felt that you can be who you are here and you are encouraged to be individual and to speak your mind. Also we have very easy access to art, film and music that is not mainstream.

How do different traditions, cultural influences and way of living coexist in you?

My Taiwanese upbringing is still the foundation of me as a person. However my way of thinking and my way of seeing is based very much on what I have experienced in the Western world.

Do you think children’s dreams are the same no matter where they live or grow up?

For sure. Given that they have the same access to resources and information I think their dreams are the same no matter where they are from.

Can you recognize your “Asian” and “Western” sides in your career choices?

Can you think about a kid’s fashion brand (or collection) born from such a communion of styles and cultures?

Gucci is one of the most worldly collections in the kidswear segment.

If you were still a child, what would not be lacking in your closet (and in your best boyfriend) this winter?

For me it would be a Victorian-inspired dress from Paade Mode. I was never very girly but my favorite piece in my wardrobe was a brown floral dress with lace trim. For a boy it would be a Moncler Enfant puffer jacket.

Nata a Hong Kong, Hilda ha trascorso diversi anni tra Canada e USA e nel 1997 è tornata a vivere nel suo paese d’origine per un offerta di lavoro come fashion editor. Pandemia permettendo, il suo progetto è continuare a viaggiare con la famiglia, come ha sempre fatto, e vivere tra HK e NY dove ha comprato casa. Africa, Giappone, Messico, sono solo alcuni dei luoghi in cui è stata abbracciando, ogni volta, cultura e tradizioni. Le sue collezioni sono il risultato di questa integrazione, interpretata in una nuova prospettiva e tradotta in capi ed accessori on-trend. “Cartoline” di stile spedite sempre da un luogo diverso. Questa stagione Hilda ci racconta l’Inghilterra. Il lato delicato di un roseto bagnato dalla rugiada e quello provocatorio della scena musicale punk. Un mix originale per una collezione innovativa in cui compaiono illustrazioni di conigli, cani e fiori insieme a orli consumati e maglioni con gli strappi. La curiosità di Hilda si dimostra inesauribile ma è guidata dall’autodisciplina tipica della sua origine asiatica, come l’umiltà che, ci assicura, rende felici e grati. Chiacchierando con lei abbiamo scoperto che il miglior cibo giapponese si mangia a New York e non in Giappone, e che in Thailandia esiste uno zoo in cui ognuno può dare da mangiare alle tigri.

en - Founded in 2017, Wander & Wonder is a globe-trotter brand just like its designer Hilda Yim. It - Hilda, hai trascorso l’infanzia a Hong Kong e l’adolescenza prima in Canada e poi negli USA. Qual è la più grande differenza fra cultura occidentale e orientale?

La disponibilità della cultura occidentale nell’accettare ogni persona così com’è riconoscendone qualità e talento. Mentre dall’altro lato ci sforziamo di omologarci e di essere molto competitivi nella società.

L’essere cresciuta a Hong Kong ha in qualche modo plasmato il tuo carattere?

E qual è stata la prima cosa che ti ha colpito quando ti sei trasferita in America?

Hong Kong ha avuto un’enorme influenza su di me.

La nostra cultura è orientata al lavorare sodo e per questo sono una persona abbastanza disciplinata.

Quando mi sono trasferita sono rimasta impressionata dall’apertura mentale, mi sentivo sempre pronta a incontrare gente nuova. Inoltre essendo studentessa d’Arte, ero attratta dalla cultura USA. La cosa di New York che ti manca di più?

Ci torni spesso?

Le persone. Ognuno è così sofisticato a modo proprio.

E cordiale. Ti senti sempre rispettato dai NewYorkesi ed è la loro unicità. A mancarmi sono le good vibes di una bella giornata di sole quando tutti si riversano nei parchi. Prima del Covid andavo a New York almeno una volta l’anno. Ho anche comprato un appartamento a Brooklyn quindi spero di potermici trasferire presto.

collezione da portare ovunque nel mondo quale sarebbe?

La felpa ecru col coniglietto, così versatile e carina. È perfetta per ogni outfit e, soprattuto, clima.

Il posto più bello in cui sei stata di recente con i tuoi figli?

Direi il Chiang Mai in Thailandia. Era l’estate del 2019 e abbiamo alloggiato in un bellissimo boutique hotel, il Tamarind Village. Allo Zoo abbiamo addirittura dato da mangiare alle tigri ed è stata un’esperienza bellissima.

Che suggerimenti daresti a dei genitori in visita ad Hong Kong con i bimbi? E il miglior posto in cui mangiare cibo asiatico fuori dall’Asia?

Il mio miglior consiglio è: prenotate un hotel con piscina. Fa molto caldo e non c’è attività migliore che nuotare. Anche se abbiamo spiagge niente male.

Proverei a visitare qualche piccola isola nei dintorni, ce ne sono alcune con bellissimi siti storici.

Il miglior posto per mangiare asiatico è New York, direi addirittura che si mangia giapponese meglio che in Giappone, a mio modesto parere.

Ascolti consigli da parte dei tuoi figli quando disegni una nuova collezione?

Di solito non chiedo consigli ma li osservo e mi interessa sapere sapere cosa trovano comodo. Essere mamma ti dà un vantaggio perché capiamo cosa piace ai bambini.

C’è qualche paese asiatico che ancora ti manca da visitare?

A quale eredità della tua cultura non rinunceresti mai?

Le Maldive! So che sono bellissime!

L’umiltà. Sono sempre umile con tutti i miei amici e le persone con cui collaboro. Questo lato del mio carattere mi rende sempre grata e felice.

Cosa ispira le tue collezioni in generale e come descriveresti questa stagione AI21?

Arte, cultura e gente di diversi paesi o città. Questa collezione è ispirata all’Inghilterra e alla sua estetica contraddittoria. È il risultato di un mix fra un giardino di rose all’inglese e la musica punk rock. La gentilezza e il candore sono rappresentati da figure come il coniglietto e il cane. Il lato più innovativo lo trovate nei dettagli… bordi consumati o maglioni strappati.

Ottima domanda! Direi wonder (la meraviglia) perché penso che non ci sia niente di più potente della mente umana. A volte capita che i prigionieri impossibilitati a muoversi scrivano dei libri bellissimi.

and a teenager, first in Canada and then in the USA. What’s the main difference between Western and Eastern cultures?

The ecru bunny sweatshirt. Just because it’s so versatile and cute! It’s perfect for any weather and outfit!

To me the biggest difference is the openness of Western culture to accept each person the way they are and embrace the unique qualities and talent of each individual. Whereas in the east we try very hard to be like everyone else and to be very competitive in the society.

The best place you had been recently with your kids?

Has being raised in Hong Kong shaped your character somehow? And which was the first thing you were impressed by moving to America?

Yes, Hong Kong had a huge influence on me growing up there. Our culture is very diligent and hard working. So luckily I’m quite a disciplined person.

After moving to the US I was very impressed by the open-mindedness and always up to be meeting new friends and learning new things.

What do you miss the most about New York?

Do you come back there every now and then?

People. Everyone is very smart and sophisticated in their own way. And friendly and easy to talk to. You feel respected all the time by others and that’s the uniqueness of New Yorkers. The thing I miss most is when there’s a sunny day and people all go out and stay in a park to enjoy some good times! It’s all good vibes! Before Covid I crust at least once a year to NY. I bought an apartment in Brooklyn in 2018 so hopefully we will move back there in the future.

I would say it’s Chiang Mai in Thailand. It was the summer of 2019 and we stayed in a beautiful boutique hotel called Tamarind Village. We also visited the Tiger Zoo and literally fed them ourselves. It was a great experience for us!

What suggestions would you give to any parents which are visiting Hong Kong with children? And the best place or places to eat Asian food outside Asia?

My best advice would be to book a hotel with swimming pool. It’s very hot here and the best activity would be swimming! Although we also have great beaches. I would try to visit some of the little islands which has a lot of heritage sites. The best place to eat Asian food outside of Asia is NYC… I would daringly say NY has better Japanese food than Japan in my humble opinion.

Do you take advices from your children when designing a new collection?

I don’t usually take their advice but I observe what they find comfortable. Being a mom is a huge advantage because we understand what children like in clothing.

Any Asian country, you still miss, that you wish to visit?

What’s the heritage of your culture you could never give up?

I still want to go to the Maldives. I know it’s beautiful there!!

The humbleness of our culture is something I will never give up. I’m always humble to all my friends and people I work with. That’s how I’m raised up and it gives me a gratefulness to what I have achieved and it keeps me happy too.

What inspires your collections in general? And how would you describe this FW21/22 range?

My inspiration is always art, culture and people of different places. England inspired this collection.

Both the hard and soft of their aesthetics. The result of an English rose garden’s beauty mixed with punk music. I love the juxtaposition of proper gentle characters (the bunny and the dog) and the edgy punk side of distressed edges and ripped sweaters.

If you were forced to decide: better to wander or to wonder?

Great question!! I think if I am forced to I will choose wonder because I believe human’s mind is the most powerful thing in the universe. Sometime even prisoners can write the greatest books.

ita - Il successo di Uniqlo inizia nel 1984, da un negozio sul retro di un caseggiato di Hiroshima che il suo fondatore, Tadashi Yanai, aveva chiamato Unique Clothing Warehouse, poi ribattezzato Uniclo, (con la C). È stato uno sbaglio nella registrazione della joint venture di Hong Kong, nel 1988, a cambiarlo in Uniqlo, (con la Q), e Mr. Yanai quell’errore l’ha percepito da subito come un valore, qualcosa che aggiungeva carattere al brand, decidendo di cambiare in Uniqlo tutti i negozi. Ma nome a parte è stata l’idea di come proporsi al pubblico la carta vincente, basata sulla vendita Help Yourself tipica delle città universitarie americane dove i capi erano esposti sui ripiani in ogni forma e colore, consultabili facilmente, come si faceva con i dischi e i libri e il personale di vendita assisteva il cliente senza pressarlo. Un concetto che ha svolto, e ancora svolge, un ruolo importante nel successo del brand. Un modo per distinguersi, per rivoluzionare il concetto di moda e renderla facile, immediata, divertente. Abiti semplici, di buona qualità, che costano il giusto e, soprattutto, longevi, come nella migliore tradizione giapponese. Ad ogni stagione sempre più caldi (o freschi), leggeri, colorati.

Chi non è mai rimasto affascinato dalle tonalità, così sapientemente accostate per gradazione e contrasto, da cui ci si sente avvolti entrando nei loro negozi? Per noi di Scimparello scegliere un capo qualsiasi in un solo colore fra tutti quelli disponibili, a volte è difficile!

Ma capi e colori non sono certo l’unica cosa che ci piace di Uniqlo.

Ci piace il pensiero che guida il brand, il concetto in cui credono fermamente: che gli abiti possano cambiare il mondo perché sono studiati per migliorare la vita, per far nascere nelle persone un sentimento di gioia e di soddisfazione, per essere abbordabili, oltre che belli. E tutto questo cambia il modo di pensare della gente.

Ci piace che collaborino con le agenzie per i rifugiati a cui offrono abiti e donazioni. Attraverso una partnership globale che dura da 15 anni con l’UNHCR l’Agenzia delle Nazioni Unite per i rifugiati – Uniqlo ha donato oltre 36 milioni di capi di abbigliamento ai rifugiati in ben 65 paesi!

Ci piace la loro rivista, LifeWear, diretta da Takahiro Kinoshita e disponibile gratuitamente in ogni punto vendita. Un magazine aziendale che tratta tanti argomenti, non necessariamente legati al brand, ed in questa ultima uscita si concentra sulle relazioni post Covid affrontando il tema del “Neighborhood Living”: l’importanza delle comunità locali, l’idea di essere un buon vicino, le persone care, l’essere grati per ogni singolo giorno vissuto nell’affetto e con l’affetto.

Una bellissima rivista cartacea perché a Mr. Kinoshita, come a noi del resto, il profumo della carta un po’ manca e crede negli oggetti da conservare, nella cultura che non va archiviata in fretta ma passata di mano in mano.

Ci piacciono le loro collezioni bambino: facili da togliere, indossare e fantasiose, come Joy of Print, dello studio di design londinese Cath Kidston, oppure la nuovissima linea Soft Fluffy di coperte, maglie e altri capi in un materiale particolarmente caldo e leggero.

E poi ancora poncho e berretti in maglia, leggings e salopettes, senza dimenticare le mamme in attesa che hanno temperature corporee basali più alte e sudano più facilmente. Per loro è stata studiata una gamma di indumenti HEATTECH, trattati con olio di Argan del Marocco, che sfrutta l’umidità del corpo e la trasformano in calore.

E, least but not last, ci piace che Uniqlo mantenga la sua identità asiatica. Che i suoi marchi siano due e vengano sempre raffigurati insieme: uno con i caratteri giapponesi e, di fianco, quello con le scritte occidentali.

eng - The success of Uniqlo began in 1984, from a shop at a back street apartment building in Hiroshima that its founder, Tadashi Yanai, had called Unique Clothing Warehouse, then renamed Uniclo (with the C). It was a mistake, when registering the company on a joint venture in Hong Kong in 1988, to change it to Uniqlo (with the Q) and Mr. Yanai immediately perceived that error as a value, something that added character to the brand and decided to rename all the stores.

But name aside it was the sales technique, based on the ‘help yourself ’ method of the stores at the American Universities, the winning card. Clothes were displayed on the shelves in every shape and color, accessible and easy to select as books or records, and sellers just assisted the clients without being pushy. A concept that has played, and still plays, an important role in the success of the brand. A way to stand out, to revolutionize the concept of fashion and to make it simple, immediate, fun. Easy clothes, good quality at the right costs and, above all, long-lived, as in the best Japanese tradition. Every season is always warmer (or fresher), lighter, colorful.

Who has never been fascinated by the shades, so skillfully combining gradation and contrast, from which you feel wrapped entering their stores? For us, at Scimparello, choose any item in only one color among all those available, sometimes it is difficult! But clothes and colors are certainly not the only thing we like about Uniqlo.

We like the philosophy behind the brand, the concept in which they firmly believe: that clothes can change the world because they are designed to improve life, to create a feeling of joy and satisfaction in people, to be affordable, as well as beautiful. And all this changes the way people think.

We like that they work with refugee agencies, offering clothes and donations. Through a global partnership that has lasted for 15 years with the UNHCR - the United Nations Agency for Refugees - Uniqlo has donated over 36 million pieces of clothing across 65 countries!

We like their baby collections: easy to take off, wearable and imaginative, like Joy of Print, by London design studio Cath Kidston, or the brand new Soft Fluffy line of blankets, vests and other items in a new material, particularly warm and light. And then again ponchos and knitted caps, leggings and salopettes, without forgetting the future moms who have higher basal body temperatures and sweat more easily. For them, even a range of HEATTECH clothing has been studied, treated with Moroccan Argan oil, which exploits the moisture of the body and transforms it into heat.

And, least but not last, we like that Uniqlo maintains its Asian identity. That its marks are two and always represented together: one with the Japanese characters and, on the side, the one with Western writing.

it - Il successo di Péro nasce dalla tenacia e dalla passione di due donne fuori dal comune: Adele Gandola, che durante una vacanza di “noia totale a Forte dei Marmi”, viene letteralmente folgorata dalla fotografia, piccola e in b/n, di una camicia nelle news sulle ultime pagine di Vogue Italia; e dalla giovane stilista indiana Aneeth Arora che, quella camicia, aveva realizzato ed era stata segnalata come una delle designer emergenti più promettenti da Who’s Next.

Per Adele, quel capo diventa presto un’ossessione.

Long story short: decide di andare a Mumbai a conoscere Aneeth ad una fiera di moda, e dopo avere stipato in un sacco di plastica i capi sparsi un po’ ovunque nel piccolo atelier della giovanissima stilista, torna in Italia.

Pochi giorni dopo compila una lista dei negozi più esclusivi e, valigia alla mano, li visita uno per uno. Quasi tutti apprezzano ma non si sbilanciano finché, un giorno, entra da Penelope a Brescia. Gli abiti di Aneeth sono diversi dal resto della produzione indiana, hanno qualcosa di geniale, mescolano tradizione e contemporaneità, i materiali sono ricercati, ogni particolare è curatissimo, sono “indiani” ed allo stesso tempo non lo sono. Il successo arriva quasi subito e Péro, oggi, è venduto nei migliori negozi del mondo. Nel frattempo Aneeth ha avuto modo di viaggiare trovando nuove fonti di ispirazione. Il suo estro, la sua dedizione, la cura maniacale per i dettagli che ha da sempre caratterizzato il suo lavoro, l’hanno resa famosa internazionalmente. Ma resta la stessa ragazza che Adele ha conosciuto 11 anni fa: talentuosa, determinata e con i piedi ben piantati per terra.

Aneeth qual è stato il primo vestito che ti ha affascinato da bambina?

Un vestito che mi ha cucito mia mamma. Lei amava cucire abiti sempre nuovi per me. Lo faceva anche per il mio compleanno, finché non ho compiuto dieci anni. Nella nostra zona tutti sapevano che durante le vacanze, quando Aneeth usciva a giocare la sera, indossava sempre qualcosa di nuovo.

Aneeth’s clothes are different from the rest of the Indian production, they have something brilliant, they mix tradition and modernity, the materials are refined, every detail is very cared for, they are “Indians” and, at the same time, they aren’t. Success arrives almost immediately, and now Péro is sold in the best shops all over the world. Meanwhile, Aneeth had the opportunity to travel and find new sources of inspiration. Her talent, her dedication, the manic attention to detail that has always characterized her work, have made her famous worldwide. But she remains the same girl that Adele knew 11 years ago: talented, determined and with her feet firmly planted on the ground.

What was the first dress that impressed you as a child?

A dress that my mom stitched for me. She always loved stitching new dresses for me. She also used to do it for every birthday of mine, till I turned 10. In our area, everyone knew that during summer vacation, when Aneeth will come out to play in the evening, she will be wearing a new dress every day.

What was the first one you designed?

Un abito per me, quando avevo sedici anni. Ricordo di aver comprato il tessuto e di aver cercato e raccolto tutte le coordinate per realizzarlo.

The first dress I designed was for myself, probably when I was 16. I remember buying the fabric and matching all the coordinates to make the ensemble.

Cosa rimane in te della giovane designer che ha conosciuto Adele, 11 anni fa, per la prima volta?

What’s left in you of the young designer who met Adele, 11 years ago, for the first time?

Tutto quanto. Sono la stessa persona curiosa di allora e ancora oggi mi stupisco di come, da così lontano nel mondo e quasi per caso ci siamo potute incontrare, abbiamo deciso di lavorare insieme e continuiamo a farlo ancora oggi.

All of it. I am the same curious person who was amazed at the possibility of two people from across the world coming together coincidentally, and continuing to be together until today.

What did fashion represent to you in those years compared to now?

Cosa rappresentava per te la moda in quegli anni rispetto ad oggi?

In quei primi anni vivevo come in un sogno, ora vivo nella realtà e nella praticità. Ma sogno ancora continuamente.

In those earlier years it was all like a dream, now it is all changed to reality and practicality. But I still dream all the time.

What do you like the most about your country?

La diversità e la ricchezza delle sue diverse culture.

L’India è una delle nazioni etnicamente più eterogenee al mondo, con tradizioni fra le più antiche. L’artigianato in India è vario, ricco di storia, cultura e religione.

Penso che ogni paese abbia le sue culture e le sue storie. Tutte ricche e importanti. Ogni volta che viaggio, o leggo un libro su altri paesi, mi faccio incantare dalla loro bellezza e diversità.

I think every country has its very rich culture and history. Whenever I travel, or any book I read about them, it’s very intriguing to me, because I learn about their beauty and variety.

Nel tuo lavoro, queste due culture diverse interagiscono in qualche modo?

In your job, do these two different cultures interact somehow?

Assolutamente !!! Sempre. Péro utilizza tecniche tradizionali indiane per creare un prodotto globale.

Absolutely!!! All the time. Péro is about using traditional Indian techniques to create a global product.

Pensi che i sogni dei bambini siano gli stessi ovunque vivano o crescano?

Do you think children’s dreams are the same no matter where they live or grow up?

Sì, esattamente gli stessi. Le menti dei bambini sono meravigliose. Capaci di immaginare le cose più bizzarre del mondo.

Yes, they are the same. Kids’ minds are beautiful, capable of imagining the most bizarre things in the world.

Le pagine tra le mani dei bambini diventano gioco e invitano a riconoscere forme e cercare dettagli tra le immagini grafiche e essenziali di Mayumi Oono, illustratrice giapponese che viene dal mondo della moda e che declina questo progetto nell’ambito del tessile.

ita - Il viaggio che vorrei assolutamente fare coi miei bambini, appena possibile, è a Singapore. Perché Singapore è sicura, pulitissima (non per nulla è chiamata la Svizzera d’Oriente), verde e familyfriendly. E il clima è mite tutto l’anno. Ci andai per lavoro qualche anno fa e ne rimasi incantata.

Questa città-stato del sud-est asiatico offre un affascinante mix di progresso urbano e natura, ma anche di civiltà e culture diverse che convivono armoniosamente in un colpo d’occhio unico: i più moderni grattacieli si alternano a coloratissimi edifici coloniali, a templi buddisti e moschee. Il tutto in un trionfo di giardini tropicali rigogliosi e parchi sconfinati e curatissimi.

Jean Cocteau scriveva: “Singapore è una giungla ammaestrata, addomesticata. Dappertutto questa forza mostruosa della giungla esplode, trasformata in prati, in parchi, in culture, in campi di orchidee. È il porto più salubre dell’Asia.”

Le attività e le esperienze da fare in famiglia sono molteplici. Vale una visita, per esempio, l’isola di Sentosa, che si raggiunge in pochi minuti a bordo di una telecabina super panoramica. Sentosa è la destinazione perfetta sia per le sue spiagge tropicali sia per le tante attrazioni che offre. Come il S.E.A. Aquarium che, con le sue oltre 100.000 creature marine, è uno degli acquari più grandi e suggestivi del mondo. Oppure gli Universal Studios, un gigantesco parco a tema dedicato ai grandi film di Hollywood, ricco di attrazioni e spettacoli anche per i piccolissimi.

Lo Skyline Luge Sentosa offre invece un’esperienza unica a bordo di particolari go-kart. Lo si raggiunge con la seggiovia Skyride, che permette di godere di 248

There are many activities and experiences to do as a family. For example, the island of Sentosa is worth a visit. It can be reached in a few minutes aboard a super panoramic cable car. Sentosa is the perfect destination for both its tropical beaches and the many attractions it offers. Like the S.E.A. Aquarium which, with its over 100,000 marine creatures, is one of the largest and most evocative aquariums in the world. Or the Universal Studios, a gigantic theme park dedicated to the great Hollywood movies, full of attractions and shows even for toddlers.

The Skyline Luge Sentosa instead offers a unique experience aboard quirky go-karts. It can be reached with the Skyride chairlift, which allows you to enjoy a breathtaking view of Sentosa and once you reach the top, you can board a “sled” and then descend along

una vista mozzafiato su Sentosa e una volta arrivati in cima, si sale a bordo di uno “slittino” per poi scendere percorrendoo oltre 600 metri di sentieri alla velocità che si preferisce.

Da non perdere, il Singapore Zoo, uno zoo concepito in chiave moderna che ospita gli animali liberi nel loro habitat naturale invece che dietro le sbarre. Tigri bianche, ippopotami, scimmie, giraffe e panda sono solo alcuni dei tanti animali che si possono incontrare in questo parco faunistico di 26 ettari, che ospita oltre 300 specie di mammiferi, uccelli e rettili. Lo zoo di Singapore presenta 11 zone, ognuna delle quali conduce attraverso alcuni degli habitat naturali più distintivi del mondo, come l’Australasia per camminare tra canguri e wallaby, oppure l’area Reptile Gardens, un paradiso dove si possono ammirare diverse specie di tartarughe.

Inaugurato nel 1994 e situato vicino allo zoo di Singapore, il Night Safari è invece il primo parco safari al mondo per animali notturni. Questo parco faunistico è suddiviso in sette habitat distinti, dalle aspre colline dell’Himalaya alle aree paludose dell’Africa equatoriale, ognuno dei quali ospita animali diversi. Il parco si può esplorare a piedi oppure a bordo di un trenino, con una corsa di 35 minuti durante la quale i visitatori verranno accolti da oltre 2.500 animali autoctoni e oltre 130 specie, tra cui molti indigeni della regione, come l’elefante asiatico in via di estinzione, il tapiro malese e la tigre malese.

Il Science Centre Singapore è invece il luogo perfetto per introdurre i bambini al mondo della scienza in maniera ludica.

Qui abbondano mostre interattive e attività entusiasmanti, con dodici gallerie espositive incentrate su temi come il cambiamento climatico, l’ingegneria moderna e l’astronomia.

Immaginazione e innovazione si intrecciano invece all’ArtScience Museum, creato per stimolare la curiosità dei più piccoli con laboratori e attività a cavallo tra scienza e arte.
