Sometimes it’s a question, a glance through a telescope, a moment of awe at how something works.

But more often, it begins with someone—someone like you.

At Science Museum Oklahoma, we believe curiosity is the driving force behind innovation, and imagination is the foundation of progress. For more than 65 years, our museum has been a place where sparks ignite. Children and adults alike find the fuel to explore, experiment, and dream.

Through the last year, that flame burned brighter than ever. The opening of Love’s Planetarium, a renewed focus on revitalizing the museum, and a commitment to reaching every corner of our community have all moved us forward. With nearly 600,000 guests through our doors, our work extended far beyond exhibits. From thrilling science demonstrations to beloved events like Tinkerfest and STEAM Live, every experience was designed to light a fire within.

But none of this happens on its own.

I L LUMI NAT I NG the Universe When Love’s Planetarium opened on September 20, 2024, it reignited a passion for astronomy in our community.

Since then, more than 126,000 guests have experienced the wonder of space through over 2,000 shows. On most days, the planetarium offers seven shows, plus one in Spanish each Saturday.

Most shows in the Love’s Planetarium are presented live by our expert staff, a rare approach that sets us apart from nearly every other planetarium in the country. Each presentation is led by our passionate team, making no two shows exactly alike. Guests can explore beyond the iconic dome through hands-on exhibits, including Mars missions, solar system simulations, and real images from the James Webb and Hubble telescopes.

This year also brought special programming like Black Hole Week, Space Day, and Sally’s Night, presented in partnership with the Smithsonian and sponsored by Bank of Oklahoma and Allied Arts.

UNEARTHI NG Curiosity Expedition: Dinosaur premiered on October 11, 2024 and it lit a spark of prehistoric fascination that carried through the winter months. Originally scheduled to close in January, the exhibit was extended through February 2nd due to overwhelming popularity.

Spanning 5,000 square feet and brought to life by Exhibit Design Group and Stage 9 Exhibitions, the experience featured more than ten animatronic dinosaurs and interactive stations designed to immerse guests in ancient ecosystems.

From coloring their own creatures in Dino Draw Alive to shaping terrain in the Augmented Reality Sandbox, guests explored how the prehistoric world may have looked and felt. The Interactive Egg Incubator, complete with a five-finger robotic arm, offered a closer look at the science behind each species.

Dinosaur fossils were hidden throughout the museum, inviting visitors to investigate, imagine, and ignite a love for natural history that could last a lifetime.

A SPARK That Moves Us While our eyes often turn upward in the planetarium, Finity reminds us to stay grounded in creativity and connection. Standing 25 feet tall just outside our doors, this remarkable sculpture invites guests to experience the museum before they even step inside.

Finity is the only permanent installation by artist and inventor Tom Shannon in the United States. Its rotating polyhedrons invite wonder, play, and reflection, reminding us that science and art move forward together.

Thanks to generous support from the Kirkpatrick Family Fund, we began conservation efforts this year to preserve this iconic piece for generations to come.

Finity reflects our commitment to caring for both the museum and the spirit of discovery that surrounds it.

Igniting WONDER Through Illusions In March 2025, the smART Space gallery debuted POV: Perspectives in Anamorphic Art, an exhibition that blends science and creativity to transform both what we see and how we see it.

Featuring internationally recognized artists including Jonty Hurwitz, Leon Keer, Michael Murphy, Carnovsky, and Candace Hicks, the exhibit blends optical illusions, light, and movement to reveal hidden dimensions.

Standout moments include Mahbooba, a kinetic installation made from 361 suspended elements, and more than 50 illusions that spark curiosity with every glance. Artist Leon Keer visited the exhibition on June 2, offering guests a rare, firsthand perspective.

Located on the museum’s second floor, smART Space continues to be a place where imagination fuels discovery. POV is included with general admission and remains on view through March 2026.

A BLAST From the Past As a Smithsonian Affiliate, Science Museum Oklahoma is proud to care for a collection that preserves the past while fueling future discovery. This year, our Collections department expanded its outreach in meaningful ways. At the Elemental Ball, Member’s Night, and Space Day, guests explored rare space artifacts. Through the Apprentice Curator Program, future scientists learned how history is cared for and shared.

With roots in the three original museums that formed the Omniplex and ongoing contributions from personal donors, the collection continues to grow. Today, it includes more than 150 meteorites, a partnership with OU Geology, and thousands of objects that keep curiosity alive.

CURIOSI T Y Takes Root The Gardens at Science Museum Oklahoma are living laboratories that spark curiosity and inspire care for our planet. With a certified Monarch Waystation, active beehives, and a peaceful koi pond, these spaces support biodiversity and offer hands-on lessons in sustainability.

The newly renovated pavilion now serves as both a quiet retreat and a hub for community events focused on environmental responsibility. Our efforts in composting, water reuse, recycling, and native landscaping earned us the Mayor’s Award at the 2025 OKC Beautiful Distinguished Service Awards.

In partnership with the Oklahoma Iris Society, we have 43 iris varieties, including the centuries-old Swerti. The Gardens show how science and beauty thrive when rooted in care, intention, and access for all.

A Stage for SPARK S to Fly One year after its renovation, the Science Live! presented by OG+E auditorium, has become a powerful source of energy, curiosity, and inspiration. In the past year, more than 150,000 guests experienced the excitement of live science in this revitalized space.

New video and visual effects have been added to enhance the audience experience, creating shows that are more immersive and impactful. On May 26, Science Live premiered Star Stuff, a brand-new production exploring the life cycle of a star. From a molecular cloud to supernova and back again, the show blends story, science, and spectacle to ignite wonder in every seat.

The spark continues beyond the auditorium. Science Live has expanded its reach throughout the state, visiting schools, libraries, and community centers. Alongside STEAM Live, the team inspired 54,378 potential future scientists through live outreach.

FUELI NG Weather Wisdom In a state where weather can change in an instant, understanding the science behind it is essential. In 2025, KFOR’s 4Warn Storm School brought that science to life at Science Museum Oklahoma.

Launched on January 22, the program was hosted eight times throughout the year by expert meteorologists from KFOR. These sessions gave students a hands-on look at how storms form, how scientists track them, and how to stay safe when severe weather strikes.

Each event turned uncertainty into knowledge and sparked a new level of interest in the science of weather. Young Oklahomans left feeling more prepared, more curious, and more connected to the world above them.

Future Builders, SPARKED Here At Science Museum Oklahoma, we are proud to support TeamOKC e’possums, a student-led robotics team competing in the FIRST Robotics system. For the past four years, the museum has served as their home base, offering space, resources, and encouragement as they explore the world of engineering and innovation.

In 2025, the team competed in three events, including an invitation to the FIRST Championship in Houston. Their success is a powerful reminder of what happens when students are supported and inspired to lead.

This April, the museum opened a new robotics exhibit in the Aviation Wing, giving all guests a glimpse into the future these students are building. We are grateful to the Argosy Foundation for making this work possible.

A Spark for EVERYONE TINKERFEST In September 2024, Tinkerfest brought a day of hands-on discovery to more than 8,000 guests, many experiencing the museum for the first time. Now in its eighth year, the event remained free to the public thanks in part to support from the National Science Foundation EPSCoR program.

With 79 interactive activities and 49 community partners, the day was filled with opportunities to explore, tinker, and imagine.

HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES

Guests disassembled full-size cars, navigated a robot maze, explored virtual reality, and learned from experts across Oklahoma, including NASA JPL ambassadors and the University of Oklahoma.

Starting in 2025, Tinkerfest will continue under a new name—DiscoverFest. The new name reflects the heart of the event: a space where creativity meets opportunity and curiosity finds its spark.

STEAM NIGHTS Just blocks from Science Museum Oklahoma, there are children who pass by every day but have never had the chance to walk through the doors.

STEAM Nights are designed for them.

Held for schools in under-resourced neighborhoods near the museum and supported by Oklahoma City’s Innovation District STEM Education Workforce Development, these events turn classrooms into places of possibility. Families from Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary, Millwood Elementary, and Thelma R. Parks Elementary explored hands-on science together, often for the first time. Each school receives grade-level kits filled with creative projects, like Cardboard Critters, that bring curiosity to life.

Every child deserves the chance to imagine a future in science. STEAM Nights help make that future feel within reach.

LAUNCH Scientific Flurries In December 2024, Science Museum Oklahoma introduced a new holiday tradition. Winter Wonderlab welcomed families during the week before Christmas for three evenings of joyful, hands-on exploration.

The event featured ten STEAM-based activities designed to brighten the season and spark creativity. Guests launched mini boats in the Gravy Boat Regatta, tested physics with the Chimney Santa Drop, built an indoor Cardboard Gingerbread Village, and stepped into an Immersive Snow Globe. Each family left with a take-home project to keep the curiosity going long after the evening ended.

Thanks to its success, Winter Wonderlab will expand in 2025 to include daytime hours and an additional evening of festive fun.

Traveling WONDER Now in its second full year, STEAM Live continues to bring the mission of Science Museum Oklahoma to classrooms across the state. The program reached 125 elementary and middle schools in 2025, with a focus on Title 1 communities where access to hands-on science is limited.

Through high-energy demonstrations with rubber bands, magnets, and balloons, our educators engaged 54,378 students with interactive, curiosity-driven learning. For many, it was a first encounter with science presented in a fun, accessible way.

Each visit encourages students and teachers to participate, ask questions, and see science as something they can explore and enjoy. Every moment is designed to inspire future thinkers, creators, and problem solvers.

Universal SPARK S SPACE DAY & SALLY’S NIGHT Science Museum Oklahoma brought together two beloved celebrations for the first time, Space Day and Sally’s Night, creating an unforgettable day of exploration and inspiration on June 13.

With regular museum admission, guests could make telescope observations of the sun, operate a robotic arm, explore authentic shuttle era NASA artifacts, launch reaction rockets, measure star brightness, and handle genuine meteorites. Families of all ages also enjoyed creating nebula inspired spin art, designing and testing egg drop landing crafts, and sketching celestial details from telescope views.

Space Day was proudly sponsored by Allied Arts, whose support helped make the day’s hands-on activities possible.

As the sun set, Sally’s Night honored the legacy of Dr. Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, and celebrated the curiosity and resilience she inspired.

Guests designed rockets, explored art in science, and joined astronomers for immersive planetarium presentations.

These moments encouraged future scientists, especially girls, to see themselves in every part of STEAM. We are deeply grateful to Bank of Oklahoma for making this night of wonder and encouragement possible, and we look forward to continuing this tradition in June 2026.

LIGH T I NG Every Path SMOTEENS On March 29, Science Museum Oklahoma exclusively welcomed teens for the debut of SMOTeens, a night created by teens for teens. Organized by our Teen Apprentice program participants, this after-hours event gave young people the freedom to explore the museum with friends, connect with science in a hands-on way, and experience the excitement of having the entire space to themselves. The community response was overwhelming, with families and teens alike eager for an evening designed entirely around their interests.

The success of SMOTeens was felt long after the night ended. This event helped earn Science Museum Oklahoma the Metro Family Favorites award for Best Teen/Tween Place, a recognition that reflects the need for and value of experiences like this. With sponsor support, SMOTeens can grow into a signature event that inspires the next generation, builds community, and shows teens they have a place in the world of science.

HOMESCHOOL DAYS Twice a year, Science Museum Oklahoma opens its doors for homeschool families, offering themed days that turn at-home lessons into hands-on discovery. These events give students a chance to explore science together, connect with peers, and bring their learning to life.

Each event is centered around a unique theme such as weather or aviation, with interactive activities, demonstrations, and time with museum educators. Homeschool Days offer a welcoming environment where curiosity grows and learning feels exciting, connected, and real. This year, thousands of homeschoolers explored the museum, additional activities, and learned through interactivity, away from screens and books!

IGNI TE the Evening ELEMENTAL BALL The second annual Elemental Ball invited guests to explore science in ways they never imagined. Held on February 28, 2025, the evening offered bold experiences, immersive moments, and unexpected discoveries designed to awaken curiosity and inspire awe.

Presented by Devon Energy, Lancer Hospitality Group, and The Chickasaw Nation, the event encouraged guests to move beyond the ordinary.

Attendees walked on glass, held fire, entered a colorless room, and sampled astronautinspired cuisine. With go-karts, liquid nitrogen slushies, a giant ball pit, and more, the evening proved that science can be both meaningful and unforgettable.

The Elemental Ball is more than an ordinary fancy evening of fundraising. It is fuel for the museum’s programs that help shape the way Oklahomans experience STEAM education.

KIRKPATRICK LEGACY Admiral John E. Kirkpatrick was born February 13, 1908, in Oklahoma City. After graduating from Central High School in 1925 and furthering his studies at West Point, the Marion Institute, and the U.S. Naval Academy (class of 1931), he married Eleanor Blake of Mangum in 1932. A distinguished World War II gunnery officer, he spent 54 months at sea aboard the USS North Carolina before serving on the USS Alaska and USS Oklahoma City. In 1950 he founded Kirkpatrick Oil Company, exemplifying both entrepreneurial vision and civic devotion.

John and Eleanor Kirkpatrick were esteemed pillars of Oklahoma City, their boundless generosity enriching arts and education across the state. Today the Kirkpatrick Foundation continues their philanthropic legacy, and Science Museum Oklahoma owes its very existence to their unwavering support.
