Welcome to the 2017-2018 concert season at the Schulich School of Music! I am thrilled to be returning to McGill after twenty-five years to take on the position of Dean. I could not be more honoured to join this vibrant musical community at such an exciting time. The brilliant musicians and world-class researchers that call Schulich home are actively transforming the cultural and intellectual landscape through performance, strong traditional research, and innovative interdisciplinary investigation. I am eager to welcome this year’s two Schulich Distinguished Visiting Chairs in Music, professors Beverley Diamond and Georgia Spiropoulos – keep your eyes peeled for occasions to connect with these bright minds!

Continuing our participation in the Canada 150 celebrations, we’ve curated a rich and varied Canadian Music Collection, including performances of contemporary Canadian composers, a symposium devoted to the works of Brian Cherney, esteemed Schulich School of Music professor, as well as an appearance by the beloved Canadian Brass, visiting artists in our first-ever Brass Days events. The McGill Symphony Orchestra will be on the move to venues across Montreal this winter so be sure to mark your calendars for February’s exceptional performance of Schumann’s Symphony No. 1 at the Maison Symphonique led by Maestro Kent Nagano! The orchestra joins forces with McGill Choirs under the baton of Jean-Sébastien Vallée with a thrilling version of Mendelssohn’s Elijah, returning to the treasured Église Saint-Jean- Baptiste for their final concert of the season. Following their blockbuster 60th anniversary season, Opera McGill teams up with the McGill Baroque Orchestra to present Handel’s Ariodante in November, returns to the Monument-National in January with Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, and celebrates Leonard Bernstein’s 100th anniversary during the Lisl Wirth Black Box Festival in March. You won’t want to miss a thing! The second edition of our Musical Chairs Chamber Music Festival will be beckoning you to our halls this spring. Where else but at the Schulich School of Music will you experience new partnerships forming before your eyes between Schulich’s own emerging artists and invited young musicians from the world’s finest musical training institutes? Whether you hear their performances as part of our collaborative series at the Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur, the McCord Museum, or in our own Pollack Hall, the contagious energy and enthusiasm shared by these musicians is guaranteed to inspire. This year, more than ever, we hope you’ll make the Schulich School of Music your community music resource. Learn to play a new instrument with our teachers at the McGill Conservatory of Music; join us in our new free Musical 5 à 7 Series taking place in the Elizabeth Wirth Music Building lobby; or explore the musical minds of Schulich with our Research Alive events. And if you happen to be in Toronto this winter, let our students warm you up with four concerts at the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre - you won’t be disappointed! When we see each other at events this season, please be sure to say bonjour! I so look forward to meeting each of you, and to discovering alongside you the impressive number of activities presented by our students, faculty and guest artists in the city and beyond. Come along with us this season as Schulich Brings Music to Life!

CELEBRATING 200 YEARS OF CHANGING HOW WE UNDERSTAND OUR WORLD Since 1821, McGill has been offering outstanding educational opportunities to students from across the globe, pioneering new areas of research and discovery, and changing how we understand the world. As we approach our University’s 200th anniversary, McGill’s professors, researchers and students continue to tackle the biggest questions in science, culture and human endeavour. Looking towards McGill’s third century, we hope you will join with us in celebrating and supporting this important work as we embark on the Road to 200 and beyond, and as, together, we create an even better world and a brighter future.
