We make music.

And when we make music, we make it better together.

As I reflect on the past year, I am reminded the Schulich School of Music is built on a foundation of talent, intellect, dedication, and creativity. With these strengths, we as a community are able to envision new possibilities for education, performance, and research. With purpose and imagination, we see ways to shape not only our own future, but also the future of music itself.

Two Distinguished Visiting Professors will join us as Schulich Dean’s Chairs this year. Professor Aaron Williamon, head of the Performance Science program at Royal College of Music in London, is teaching a course on performance science as well as co-hosting, with Schulich Professor Isabelle Cossette, the International Symposium on Performance Science at McGill in October. Professor Johann Buis, from Wheaton College, IL, is teaching courses at the intersection of musicology, ethnomusicology, cultural theory, and social justice; engaging with the School’s diversity goals; and organizing public events related to the themes of his research. Also coming to Schulich is a phenomenal roster of Catherine Thornhill Steele Visiting Artists, including Isabelle Demers, Darrin Milling, Tonya P. Mitchell-Spradlin, Sheila Jordan, Karen Burke, Joseph Pereira, and John Mortensen. These international guests will fuel Schulich with bold and innovative ideas, contributing their fresh perspectives to multiple disciplines and communities.

The rhythm of our school year is revealed here page by page and note by note. As we return to a more familiar flow, I encourage you to step outside your musical comfort zone: find new-to-you composers, works, and styles; explore a different century and hear instruments played in novel ways; take a chance on a topic you have not considered before.

In my opinion, the greatest asset of an organist is flexibility.

We constantly have to adjust to new instruments in different spaces, over a very short period of time.

Moving forward, with the pandemic following its ebb and flow, I think flexibility will be required of everybody, on a very broad scale — being able to convert a series of concerts into a recording project, for example, or going to a different venue. Organists may have a bit of a head start as we always need to have Plan B or Plan C in case things don’t work out as expected. We deal with complicated yet fragile machines and have to adapt to their will – not entirely unlike our current Corona foe!

Gathering ensembles of different levels and from different milieus allows for unique human and musical collaborations. The growth and development of artists doesn’t happen in silos; it is rather through collaborations with musicians from outside our regular circle that we learn and discover what it means to be 21st-century artists.

The pandemic gave us the time to reflect on our responsibilities as artists, and through meaningful discussions we deepened our understanding of what it means to be a music community.

The MMR is an incredibly large laboratory – think symphonic orchestra wide – which is equipped with both a physical and an electronics system to control acoustical features, including reverberation time.

All music is a language that involves conversation.

Within that language is expression, individuality, surprise — all elements that make us human and the musical experience that is relatable and enjoyable for everyone (the common ground).

If you’re not willing to listen, then you’re not willing to partake in the conversation or learn how to communicate and you will miss out on what could be a great musical experience.

All my professional projects include collaboration with other artists. eTube was inspired by Master of Music Technology student Vincent Cusson’s vision to collaborate on a project which integrates programming and instrument design with performance and improvisation and necessitates both of our research specialties.

The tube’s sound world is uncommon and limited and it is a perfect fit for this type of electronic augmentation research project.
