Welcome to the 2016-2017 concert season at the Schulich School of Music! We invite you to join us for another exceptional year of music with our students, faculty and international guest artists. From the McGill Concerto and McGill Chamber Music competitions to the winners of the Wirth Vocal Prize and the Golden Violin Prize, from large and small ensembles to student recitals, and from conferences to special events in celebration of Montreal’s 375th Anniversary, this year promises to be a memorable one. Enjoy many of our artists in multiple off-campus series in exceptional venues around Montreal. We are thrilled to share a second season of programming at the McCord Museum and to introduce a new concert series at the Chapelle Historique du Bon-Pasteur, which will showcase partnerships between our students and faculty members. Need an escape from the city? Take a day trip to Mont-Saint-Hilaire for two special concerts. Or, join our musicians in Toronto for four performances in the magnificent Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre as part of the Canadian Opera Company’s “Free Concert Series.” Jazz, contemporary music, voice and piano — we’ve got it all covered! Collaborations take centre stage this year, and we anticipate great things when the McGill Symphony Orchestra, along with the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ), kick off the Montréal Nouvelles Musiques festivities in March. Be sure to take in our musical offerings for the Journées de la culture and the 375th Anniversary of Montreal (including a marathon performance of the complete Livre d’orgue de Montréal). This season also marks the 60th anniversary of Opera McGill. Founded in 1956 by Edith and Luciano Della Pergola, Opera McGill has been at the forefront of vocal training in Canada since its inception. In November, Opera McGill joins forces with the McGill Baroque Orchestra in Pollack Hall for Handel’s Alcina. January’s mainstage production of Strauss’ delightful operetta Die Fledermaus takes us off campus to the beautiful Ludger-Duvernay Hall at Monument-National. During March’s Lisl Wirth Black Box Festival, come be a part of our first-ever, citywide Opera Binge Festival: 7 operas in 5 halls in 24 hours! An Opera McGill experience not to be missed. Beyond the concert programming, we are excited to announce that the Multimedia Room, home to Canada’s most innovative music research projects and our research-driven live@CIRMMT concert series, will undergo major renovations. An infrastructure investment of $17 million, from federal and provincial sources as well as significant private philanthropy, will transform the way musicians compose, hear and perform music.
