It is also a time to reflect on Sonar magazine itself. The purpose of the smaller scale inspections is to stresstest the last inspection grade the school received; it cannot in itself change the school’s last full inspection grade. It is no surprise that the inspection team recognised our superb and purposeful learning ethos. The short report is available on the Ofsted website here.

Year 7 Wowee!! What a start to Poole High life Year 7 have had. I have said so many times over this term just how proud I am to be Head of Year to such a wellmannered, hardworking, kind and considerate collective of individuals. The transition to high school is always going to come with nerves and trepidation, especially when the school is as large as ours, but it has been so wonderful to see the year group settle into new routines, find new friendships and genuinely enjoy being in their place of learning.

Meeting the cohort in their primary schools, at the transition evening and on transition day in July, I was excited to pose to them the thought that Year 7 was going to be a journey of discovery. They considered what they would like to discover about Poole High life (and a good number of them spoke about more than just what was on offer in the canteen!): extracurricular clubs, new subjects to learn, how to get to room 80 (does anyone know how to get to room 80?) to name just a few. They spoke about discovering all sorts of things about friends new and old: favourite football teams, new games to play and who has the best dance moves (confirmed at the disco in November). I am sure that, to ask any of our Year 7s to look back at their first day of term and to consider all of the things they have discovered since being a member of Poole High, the list would be endless!

Another challenge I set for the year group in our first assembly this year was to consider how they would like teachers to speak about them. They gave adjectives such as ‘kind’, ‘hardworking’, ‘a good sportsman’, ‘a good singer’, ‘an all round good person’. It is such a privilege to be able to write here that that is exactly how our blue tie wearers are known. Their ethic spreads far further than the classroom walls - into the playgrounds and rehearsal rooms, onto the sports pitches and in the library.

Members of staff throughout the school community speak so positively of the year group - and rightly so. This attitude was seen especially on our trip to London in November. Just over 300 students travelled to the Science and Natural History Museums for the day and were blown away by the artefacts.

As I have mentioned, so many of the year group have signed up to the plethora of extracurricular clubs on offer. We have had some incredible wins in sport which has been wonderful to celebrate. We’ve had some pretty big losses too, but the resilience that shines through in those moments has been fantastic to see! In the penultimate week of term, a great number of Year 7s took part in the Christmas Concert with involvement in Music, Dance and Drama, proving again the incredible confidence that they have developed in their short time here.

I am stunned to think that we are just about to round off our first term together. I could not have wished for a more brilliant group of young people to work with for the last 14 weeks, and I am so looking forward to seeing what next term will bring!

Before then, we absolutely cannot wait to finish this busy and exciting term with the carol service at St Mary’s Church and the pantomime at Lighthouse!

Future Year 7 Art Star There’s nothing ‘sketchy’ about Emilia Morris apart from the incredible sketchbook that she has been working on in her own time recently! When Emelia’s art teacher, Miss Bennett saw the amazing work that Emilia has been putting together whilst at her after school art club, she was quick to share it with the rest of the art team.

We all agree that Emilia is obviously a star in the making and her sketchbook is a joy to behold. We are grateful to Emilia for sharing a glimpse of her artistic vision with us.

YEAR 7 DISCO £1291 RAISED FOR CHILDREN IN NEED!

Year 8 This first term as your new Head of Year has sped by so quickly, it’s hard to believe it is nearly Christmas. It has been a huge privilege to start to get to know you and your families as a year group. To see your enthusiasm for life, your energy for a challenge and your characters showing through in your approach to the demands of secondary school. I have been astounded by the way you have grown in, even this short time. You are becoming a quite amazing group of focused and determined young people. I am so excited to see this journey continue and to be by your side as you grow through our shared community and school experience.

Year 8 can seem like the year group with nothing very special happening, you aren’t the new year group, you aren’t selecting options, you aren’t starting or taking GCSEs but, in my mind, it is still a critically important time. Up until this point, you have been children in every sense. Your life has been, very much, following the path set out by other people, you have been looking down at this path, learning the basic skills to get you through the modern world and all the challenges that brings with it. Year 8 is the time where you are encouraged to look up and think about what you really want your adult life to be like. We all want you to start to let your dreams for the future be a plan for your life. This holiday, can you take a bit of time to look at your perfect career, vocation, occupation, your ideal job, and see what the requirements are for this. That is the purpose of school, to get you where you want to be, in a satisfying role that gives you a good lifestyle and security.

A big part of this is the vision I set you when I spoke to you in September. Sometimes this is become slightly out of focus as we have all worked through the last sixteen weeks, but I will keep coming back to the three foundations for your lives as you grow into young adults;

your academic development; your healthy, active interest; and finally, the things in your life that keep you interested, inquisitive and give you the chance to contribute to your communitysomeone who is giving something back. I know a huge number of you have been in newsletters and school notices for your contribution in all sorts of ways, be it the brilliant shoe box appeal that we as a year group organise, the sporting prowess of the teams so many of you play for, and some quite amazing individuals excelling in creative and performing arts. You are already halfway there!

Finally, a huge thank you to the parents of Year 8 students. So many of you have been so kind, supportive and helpful towards me as I have gone through this term. Your support for your children is a credit to you all, you have so much to be proud of. I never forget in the daily whirl that I am there for your children. May I wish you all a happy and peaceful holiday season. I know that this is a difficult year for so many people so rest assured we will all be here in January and do all we can to support our families in 2023.

MATHS CHALLENGE! So far this year, we have been having lots of fun at Maths Club - from working together on tricky cross numbers to finding out the quickest way to tie your shoe laces! Remember Maths Club is on every Thursday 3-4pm in room 36 for main school and room 39 for sixth form. Come and get involved if you would like to challenge yourself with some interesting Maths problems – and even earn some sweets whilst you are there.

At the start of the year, our sixth formers participated in the Senior Maths Challenge. They did fantastically with a huge 87% getting a certificate! A huge well done goes to Taryn Scott-Brown, Oscar Ralph and Alex Marchant who managed to get a gold certificate – a brilliant achievement. Well done to all the students who participated and especially to those below.

Year 9 I can hardly believe we have reached the end of another calendar year. The beginning of this term signalled much hope that we could return to some of the things we had missed the year before. Life learning to live with Covid-19 has allowed us to have a fabulous start to Year 9. There have been many highlights and successes, for which I am extremely proud of.

Next term we will begin the Year 9 diagnostic test in preparation for our track point reports and subsequent parents evening in early Feb. We will be starting the Options process and we will be in touch with further information in the new year. This is a great conversation to be having with your young people over the Christmas holidays.

Finally, I would like to thank you all for your continued support over the last term. It remains an immense privilege to be Head of Year 9 and working with all your children. Please have yourselves a safe and merry Christmas, best wishes for 2023!

Year 10 TThe end of the first term of Year 10 has flown by and it has been brilliant to see the year group rise to the challenges that are presented to them at Key Stage 4. One of the notable differences for the whole year group has been the start up of after-school RS revision sessions taking place fortnightly ready for the students to sit their first real GCSE exam towards the end of the academic year. Engagement and attendance to these sessions has been outstanding on the whole and we are excited to see the year group reap the benefits of their commitment when they get their GCSE grade come through next summer! Students will be sitting their first, formal diagnostic assessment for RS on 9th January so please do keep reminding them of this as we edge closer towards the New Year.

As always, Year 10 have kept up their trend of giving me plenty to be proud of and it is an absolute joy to see them bloom into the most wonderful young adults. To give an idea of scale and context, when I ran our usual rewards assembly with the year group before half term, I ran out of time and had to continue into our first assembly back as there was just so much positive feedback that our teachers and staff wanted to ensure was said about the year group! It was a brilliant celebration of success and I do hope they are as proud of themselves as we are.

As I am sure you are already aware, the students have begun thinking about and applying for their work experience placements later on this year. Can I please express the importance of this week for the students and urge you to support them in trying to find a suitable placement that will be of value to them. It is a fantastic opportunity for the students to gain some valuable ‘first hand’ experience in an area they may want to pursue in the future. The work experience week will be upon us before we know it and I really do hope that it becomes a memorable and worthwhile experience for them to ensure they are focused on their studies and exams in Summer 2024.

Finally, a thank you. To my team for their dedication and commitment to my year group, our school ethos and our students. They are an incredible team who have put the best interests of the students at the forefront of all they do and I am so grateful to them. And to my year group, who really are the best year group I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and leading. They are truly special and I don’t think my words can do justice to how proud I am to lead them, so just a thank you to them for being that beacon of greatness.

CHESS CLUB This year we launched the Poole High School chess club. Interest has been phenomenal, with over 50 students across years 7 – 12 regularly attending, with the club being particularly popular amongst Year 9 students.

As the team develops and improves, we will be looking to challenge other local schools. New members looking to join us are welcome to do so on a Wednesday lunchtime in the upper library or see Mr Lean.

Huge congratulations go out to all our Bronze Teams since the Covid outbreak.

We have seen some wonderful work put forward by students in their skills sections.

The hours of hard work they have committed to their amazing volunteering work is highly commended. This will have such a positive effect on our local community.

Finally; having consistently kept up their physical attributes, this stood them in good stead for the expeditions and it really showed.

Their resilience throughout the expeditions were inspiring to say the least. Expeditions are such a physical and emotional challenge, that they dealt with so maturely.

Showing empathy to others that struggled but succeeded because of the strong teamwork they displayed throughout.

Year 11 What a start to Year 11! It has been so lovely to see the marked step-up in student’s maturity as they began their final journey into Year 11. It has been non-stop since September, and students have taken it all in their stride. The P6 revision sessions have been well received, with excellent attendance from the start. The year group have also completed their first round of diagnostic exams, their first real experience of the exam series. Feedback from staff and invigilators was incredible, and the cohort represented themselves so well. I could not be more proud of the year group! Results are due to be released after Christmas, and I am looking forward to enjoying their successes, but also offering words of encouragement to those who may feel a little disappointed. The next round will be sat straight after February half term, so students have some time to prepare. It is however so important to remind students to not overwork themselves, and instead focus their attention on short 20-minute chunks of revision interspersed with their homework and other activities. Hopefully students enjoyed ‘Treat Friday’ following these exams, a little thankyou and well –done from us!

This term has also seen the selection of Year 11 Prefects. We had an unprecedented number of applications in September, and I enjoyed reading them all. We decided on a team of 30 to support and represent the year group throughout the year, and a number of them have already assisted at events in school including the Year 11 information evening and the Christmas Concert. Again, it is so lovely to see students volunteering their time to support the school and represent the student body.

After the longest term of the year, please take the opportunity over the holidays to rest and recuperate, fresh for the new term ahead. There are a busy few months ahead and you need to approach them with the same rigour as you have done this term.

Rewards Rewards are one of my favourite parts of my job – recognising students for their exceptional performance, or above and beyond attitude. At the end of every term, tutors are asked to nominate a number of students from their tutor groups to receive the half term reward. Nominated students are listed on the following page.

Additionally, each half term we award our top ‘Attendance’ tutor group, as well as the tutor group with the ‘Most Achievement Points’.

Year 11 11TY2 – CLL Finley Cooke - Finley is fully engaged and focused in lessons. He is punctual, helpful and comes in with a brilliant attitude to learning. Keep it up, Finley!

Skye Cowan - Skye always tries her best in class and in home learning. She has a positive attitude to learning and demonstrates an excellent work ethic - well done, Skye!

11TY3 – DV Olivia McMullen - Working really hard and always doing everything to her best ability. Always remains cheerful and never complains.

Dino Mason - Works really hard and asks (mostly!) lots of interesting questions and is always engaged in lessons.

11TY4 – MIJ Caitlyn Hardy - For persevering when it seemed too hard and getting to a point where your work is read out as an example of an excellent answer.

Owami Mathe - For being a reliable and diligent student who always participates in discussions and completes tasks in a quiet, reflective way.

11TY5 – PRH Elisha Stark-Garrett - Her continued commitment and dedication to work; it has been amazing seeing her progression from Year 10 up to Year 11. I couldn't have asked for a more lovely student. Keep up the amazing work!

Riley Tobin - His constant contributions in class. His willingness to give answers outside of the box benefits the rest of the class as they are able to discuss more challenging ideas. His presence helps establish the idea that mistakes and thinking differently as well as originally are part of the learning process.

11TY6 – HUA Megan Cammell - Lovely work completed during tutorial.

Megan is always prepared, contentious and works well every morning. Thank you, and keep up the good work! :) Millie Mills - Good work produced in tutor time. Millie often contributes and comes up with good ideas and demonstrates great recall. Great job - keep up the good work! :)

Year 11 Tutor Students of the Term Rewards 11TX1 – CLW Bruno Skinner - Bruno has been impressive in the way he critically thinks about the texts being studied and offers well thought out and developed responses to questions asked- this is now being reflected in his written responses; showing a real flair and determination to succeed. He is also a real team player and often challenges, questions and supports others, in helping them develop their ideas around the messages being presented in texts.

Alyssa Sanders-Jones - Alyssa works tirelessly to ensure she achieves highly, in all that she does! I am impressed with her notetaking, recall and they way in which she speed plans what it is she will include in her responses. Responses that are critical, well thought out and always detailed- keep this up!

11TX2 - LDJ Erin Balson - For being an absolute delight to have during tutor, English lessons and in media too. Erin's attitude towards learning is impeccable and her home learning is always to the highest standard.

Erin works exceptionally hard and deserves all the praise she gets- a real superstar.

Daequon Lagarto - Daequon is thoughtful, hardworking and always willing to share and contribute brilliant ideas. He is really excelling and an absolute pleasure to teach. Really proud of him this term.

11TX3 - BOM Jack Crimmin - Jack has consistently produced excellent homework and is steadily making progress.

He approaches all tasks with a quiet focus and has shown excellent understanding of the texts studied so far this year.

Tahmid Alam - Because our reading of Romeo and Juliet would not be the same without his stage directions! He has also begun to develop his extended responses in greater detail and push himself to achieve.

11TX4 – GOL Mia Beyer - Mia shows a consistent quiet diligence to her work. She has demonstrated her ability to actively listen in class, to take extra notes in discussion work and to respond thoughtfully and in detail. Her behaviour and focus is exemplary, as is her attitude to learning and her self motivation.

Luke Chinery - Luke is a reliable student who maintains a strong commitment to his learning. He is so engaged with questioning and is able to offer well thought out and detailed responses. He demonstrates the ability to link his learning across the literature texts and importantly, he wants to be successful- this is a great motivation.

11TX5– HOL Jamie Dickinson - For having a consistent and determined approach to his English GCSE. A student who is willing to learn from misconceptions and put the extra effort in to get the best grade possible.

Ayeasha Fleming - For continuously participating in lessons and putting extra effort into all tasks given inside and outside of lesson time.

11TX6 – PUM Megan Chadwick - Megan continues to work hard, is determined to succeed and is making great progress in all aspects of English.

Taylor Sibley - Taylor continues to show progress in all aspects of English. He is showing a real determination to succeed and continues to make progress - well done!

11TY1 – AH Mia Sturman - I am completely impressed with Mia's commitment to her English studies. She works hard in lessons and her homework is always of an excellent standard. A pleasure to teach and a role model.

Ruby Bardsley - Ruby's enthusiasm for English Literature shines through her hard work in class, her homework and in discussion. An absolute pleasure to teach.

Inktober

During October, Mr Mathlin ran a daily lunchtime club to encourage as many students and staff as possible to partake in the ‘Inktober’ drawing challenge. Inktober, which has been running since 2009, encourages participants to produce a daily drawing in any ink pen such as biro, felt tip, fine liner, brush pen etc. Participation was brilliant and it was a delight to see the drawing skills and creativity that everyone brought to their response to the daily prompt.

It was also lovely for the students to draw alongside many of the science teachers who regularly attended.

A special mention must be made of Head of Physics, Mr Francies who attended every session and whose enthusiasm and skill really inspired the students. The club was such a success that we decided to continue with a new challenge throughout November called ‘Doodle Wash’ in which we responded to daily prompts in watercolour and pen. During December we have been creating our own seasonally themed prompts. Plans are now afoot for a new lunchtime art club that will start in January so, keep your eyes open for more details and come and get involved.

100 Score and VIE Points Many of you will have noticed the stickers in your child’s diary outlining their 100 score. We know that progress is not just linked to how well a child applies themselves in lessons, but also to their attendance and application to homework which supports their learning in class. We pride ourselves on the excellent behaviour that is seen across the school, enabling children to feel confident that they have a supportive environment in which to learn. The 100 score is devised to enable students and parents to see how their child is progressing across four key areas for success: attendance; behaviour; attitude towards learning; homework. A good student would achieve 75 or higher points; this is the cut off for rewards events, certificates and stickers.

The second set of 100 score stickers reflect changes only in attendance and behaviour points. A third set of stickers will be produced once track point 2 is completed in the Spring term. Students have completed their academic counselling from track point 1 and have considered small changes they could make to increase their 100 score. They have also looked at the impact one day off has on their 100 score over time: 1 day off in the first 3 weeks = 93.3% 1 day off by end of half term = 97.1% 1 day off by end of term = 98.6% 1 day off by end of two terms = 99.3% 1 day off by end of year = 99.5%

Year 7 trip to the Science Museum and Natural History Museum:

Year 7 visited the Science Museum or Natural History Museum in London. The home of human ingenuity, they visited award-winning exhibitions, iconic objects and stories of incredible scientific achievement. The students thoroughly enjoyed looking at the exhibits and gaining hands-on opportunities. We hope that the experience has allowed our students to think big, share authentic stories and have their curiosity ignited. Enthuse Project: PHS is now part of the Enthuse STEM project with 5 other local schools. Sponsored by local company Caterpillar we are working in collaboration to enhance STEM and careers education within the curriculum.

Poole High Sixth Form Attendance At October half term, we were delighted to recognise 43% of the year 12 cohort and 23% of the year 13 cohort in achieving 100% attendance.

As we approach Christmas, we currently have 25% of the 12 cohort on 100% and the following students in year 13 on 100%. Parents’ Evening Thank you to all those parents/carers who were able to make our recent Parents Evening - 78.5% of our students attended, however this does mean a number of you missed this opportunity for 121 feedback. If you would like to know about your child’s progress, please do not hesitate to contact their subject teachers directly. Our next Parents Evening will be held on Thursday 23rd February.

Additionally, our students have supported Mr Jarvis with his fundraising efforts for the British Legion raising £240.02 at his Remembrance bake sale.

Diagnostic Exams Alongside the BTEC Exams taking place in January, all Year 12 and 13 students will be taking part in Diagnostic Exams the week commencing 16th January. It is vital that students spend some time revising over the Christmas holiday and preparing for their exams using techniques such as Brainscape, the ADAPT app, past paper questions and self quizzing that have been highlighted throughout the year.

Enrichment We have had a huge variety of enrichment activities taking place this term including sign language, first aid, yoga, self defence, car maintenance and much more! We look forward to seeing students continue expanding their skills and experiences next term.

Student Leaders The student leaders have already made a noticeable difference around school, supporting younger members of our community with settling in, volunteering at Open Evening and undertaking tasks such as revamping notice boards. Their presence has certainly been evident with their contributions to charity events as mentioned above demonstrating both commitment and enthusiasm for fundraising and raising the profile for so many worthwhile causes. They have also started their fundraising for prom, raising £258.60 at their bakesale - more to follow on the prom!

A-Level Photographers Given Food for Thought.

Our lucky A-Level Photography students were treated to a mouth-watering lunch time talk by local professional photographer, Myles New. Myles specialises in food photography and has produced work for major clients including Sainsburys, Waitrose, Tescos, Knoor, McDonalds and Costa. Our students were treated to a fascinating talk by Myles about how he became a photographer and what career pathways and opportunities exist within his profession. Afterwards, Myles gave a demonstration of how he lights a food still life photoshoot which gave us a real insight into the techniques that a professional uses. We are very grateful to Myles for taking the time to come in to share his sumptuous work with us.

Sixth Form students travelled to Ashton Gate Stadium, Bristol to go to the UK University Search Fair. They had the opportunity to listen to talks about apprenticeships, university, careers and speak to lots of Russell Group Universities.

Christmas Yule Log Ingredients For the cake For the filling & icing 3 eggs 50g butter, plus extra for the tin 85g golden caster sugar 140g dark chocolate, broken into squares 85g plain flour (minus 2 tbsp) 1 tbsp golden syrup 2 tbsp cocoa powder 284ml pot double cream ½ tsp baking powder 200g icing sugar, sifted 2-3 extra strong mints, crushed (optional) icing sugar and holly sprigs to decorate - ensure you remove the berries before serving Method 1. Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Butter and line a 23 x 32cm Swiss roll tin with baking parchment. Beat the eggs and golden caster sugar together with an electric whisk for about 8 mins until thick and creamy.

2. Mix the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder together, then sift onto the egg mixture. Fold in very carefully, then pour into the tin. Tip the tin from side to side to spread the mixture into the corners. Bake for 10 mins.

3. Lay a sheet of baking parchment on a work surface. When the cake is ready, tip it onto the parchment, peel off the lining paper, then roll the cake up from its longest edge with the paper inside. Leave to cool.

PERFORMING ARTS BSO Creative Careers Day On Tuesday 19th July, Year 8 took part in the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Creative Careers Day. A team of BSO staff came into school and led students through a series of challenges all linked to the creative and artistic industries to highlight the different types of careers available, not just for performers. The students were split into groups that became production companies. They had to design logos and create their own identities before planning a fictional concert.

Students worked out budgets, created risk assessments and produced presentations that were then shared and judged.

The final top entries went through to a Dragon’s Den style competition with the BSO team as judges. Congratulations to all who took part in this interesting and inciteful day.

Richard Chappell workshop Wednesday 28th September saw 40 of our Year 8 male students take part in a dance workshop with Richard Chappell, choreographer and dance company director. The hour long workshop was part of our collaboration with Pavilion Dance South West (as a Dream Associate School) to extend students’ experience of dance and movement to dispel the myth that dance is just for girls and is about wearing pink frilly tutus. Dance is a highly physical and difficult form of theatre that requires strength, flexibility and creativity. The boys and Richard all thoroughly enjoyed the experience and we look forwards to further collaborations to bring more dance to our students to help them extend their knowledge and ideas about the art form.

James Cousins workshops On 9th November, our Year 11 Dance GCSE students took part in 2 workshops linked to one of the professional set works, Within Her Eyes, that they are studying for their exam.

The morning workshop included a Zoom workshop with the choreographer James Cousins himself, talking about how he created the piece and guiding the students through the choreographic intent of the piece and how various elements and components of the production link directly to this. The afternoon workshop included a Zoom workshop with George Frampton, one of the dancers with the company, who taught the students some of the repertoire and then led them through a creative task linked directly to the choreographic intent. A fabulous insight to support GCSE revision and also into the work of a professional choreographer and dancer.

PERFORMING ARTS BTEC performance at Longfleet On September the 30th Y13 BTEC Performing Arts students visited Longfleet school to deliver their end of unit performance to year 5 and 6. They have been studying two units: Storytelling and Performing Arts in the Community.

For these units they devised their own performances based on well-known stories and liaised with the school to organise the event. The performances were well received by the audience who were captivated throughout and the performance ended with a Q and A session to gain insight into the strengths and areas for improvement in the opinion of the audience. Well done Year 13 for all of your hard work.

Poole Schools’ Music Association concert Poole High’s choir are joining other local primary and secondary schools to take part in the Poole Schools’ Music Association Christmas concert on Friday 2nd December.

This was cancelled last year due to Covid, so we are really delighted that it can go ahead this year to get everyone into the Christmas mood.

Poole High Christmas Concert All term students in the Performing Arts clubs and KS4 and KS5 classes have been preparing to share with you their hard work all with a Christmas theme on December 8th.We have dances, drama pieces and many musical delights to share, along with the traditional joke-telling skills of Miss Wheadon and Mrs Good to get everyone in the mood for the festive season. Thank you to all the parents who have supported our students to attend extra-curricular activities and rehearsals to prepare for this annual event. We are really looking forwards to being able to perform live to an audience after the last 2 years of cancellation due to Covid.

Year 7 and 8 carol services – 12th and 13th December It is wonderful that after 2 years away, we are able to take years 7 and 8 back to St Mary’s church for the carol services. All students in years 7 and 8 have been learning a song and carols and the Makaton signing to go with these to share with each other and parents.We also have students from our choir, orchestra, wind band and guitar club sharing some music with us and some drama students from years 7 and 8 sharing the Christmas story with us. A reminder of the true meaning of Christmas and a chance to reflect on the year that has just passed.

PERFORMING ARTS Year 7 Panto Trip OH YES IT IS! As a partner school of The Lighthouse, Poole, we are really delighted to be taking most of Year 7 to see Cinderella on Thursday 15th December where not only will the students see the fabulous show, but will also have a careers’ talk led by CBBC’s Chris Jarvis. Students will hear from staff who work at The Lighthouse in different roles in the creative industries and have an opportunity to ask questions about these different roles.

Upcoming events: Magna Sinfonia Following on from the success of performing Beethoven at Christchurch Priory 3 years ago, we are thrilled to be invited to sing with other schools and Magna Sinfonia at The Lighthouse in February 2023 performing Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. A wonderful opportunity to work alongside SoundStorm, other choirs and a live orchestra.

National Theatre Connections: We have been so impressed by the quality of performance in the recent auditions for our first ever entry into National Theatre’s Connections. It has made our job of casting so much more difficult! However, now that it has been cast we cannot wait to start building our show. We have been welcoming ideas from the students and hope that what we have is a collaborative piece which highlights the talents of our students. We will be sharing this performance at The Lighthouse Theatre, Poole (more information on this at a later date).

PDSW Origins Festival At Dance club we are looking forwards to working with Jazz Gritt (professional choreographer and dancer) in the new year as he creates a piece for us to perform at Pavilion Dance South West Origins Festival in March. Y7 Netball Winter Term 2022 Our enthusiastic and talented Year 7 netballers have enjoyed a couple of friendly fixtures this term, in preparation for some more competitive games in their PEDSSA league next term. On Monday 7th November our entire squad took part in a friendly tournament against teams from local schools St Aldhelm’s Academy and St Edward’s. A great time was had by all, and our A team came in second place with two wins and only one loss, to St Edward’s. The B team came in a respectful third place with one win and two losses. Fantastic results for both teams in their first ever netball fixture representing Poole High School!

On Wednesday 23rd November a squad made up of a mixture of A and B team players had a further friendly game here at home against St Aldhelm’s Academy. Despite it being a tight first half with the score at 2-2 at half time, the team pulled away to take the lead and win 6-3! Well done girls!

The commitment shown by many of the players, and the level of talent that has been displayed so far is fantastic, and getting me very excited to see what the future holds for these lovely netball stars!

We train on a Monday after school until 4pm. If there are any keen or budding netballers out there who might be interested in joining we’d be more than happy to have more students on the squad!

Year 9 Netball This season has been adversely affected by the weather with countless games being cancelled or called off mid hail storm!

The league was suspended due to the weather and we still have two rounds to play which we hop to do in the new year.

Results of the league will follow in the next addition of Sonar.

The girls have played really well this season and have improved their game so much. This has been a result of many of them now attending club training outside of school. We have a strong club link with Dorset All Stars, who welcome new membershttps://www.dorsetallstars.co.uk/ We did manage to participate in the PEDSSA tournament where they came 3rd in their group narrowly missing out on the play offs.

Onesie tournament/ Pyjama party!

To celebrate all things netball we decided to have a Pyjama party netball tournament just for fun! The girls played so well considering the heat that was generated by fluffy Pj’s and onesies! Best dressed was awarded to Louella AKA dragon !

Year 10 Netball v Ferndown Upper School This was the first friendly match of the season for our Year 10 netball team. The girls were nervous before starting but as soon as the whistle blew it was like they hadn’t had the summer break. Poole High started strong scoring the first goal. We then got another quite quickly afterwards making the score 20 to PHS. Due to a few incorrect passes and a couple of interceptions Ferndown managed to score a goal back making it 2-1 at half time.

With a little shuffle in defence the girls went back out confident they could win the game. There was some toing and froing between both teams making silly passes and losing possession and some great interceptions from both teams. PHS managed to get the ball quickly down into their D and score taking us into the lead 3-2. However, in the last minute Ferndown made a great interception in the centre third and got the ball into their D allowing them to have a shot on goal and they score. The final whistle blew leaving it a draw and a very evenly played game which was great fun for the girls to play in. Looking forward to playing them again in the PEDSSA league next term and we shall see who will win this time.

Year 11 PEDSSA Netball League September saw the start of the Year 11 PEDSSA Netball League hosted at St Edwards. The girls have now played together for the last 5 years and are established as both a team and as individual players.

The league was hosted over 4 consecutive Wednesdays, with some great netball and team camaraderie displayed throughout.

Wednesday 14th Game 1 – St Edwards (A) The first game of the league saw us playing the host team – St Edwards. Due to school commitments, the girls have had limited opportunity to train as a team.

However, they approached the game with unrivalled enthusiasm, and a thirst to win. Some excellent centre court play saw PHS dominate the first half, and sound shooting from Jaya and Louisa resulted in a 5-3 win at full time.

Game 2 – St Edwards (B) Game two pitched us against St Edwards B Team. The girls were confident with a win under their belts, but again played with determination and skill to secure an incredible 13-1 win. Some excellent play from Jess Smith in defence and Alyssa Sanders-Jones on centre court made for some swift passing and attacking play.

Wednesday 21st September Game 3 – Lytchett Minster Week two saw us face Lytchett in a tightly fought contest. The girls were still thriving off their double win the previous week, but not to be complacent approached the game with positivity and energy. It was a fairly even game, with the score alternating between the two teams, until towards the final minutes of the second half, Lytchett turned over a PHS centre pass resulting in a goal. They utilised this advantage and secured another goal, and on the fulltime whistle making it our first loss at 4-6.

Game 4 – Ferndown Upper (A) Not to be defeated, the girls assessed the previous game and knew that they would have to tighten up in their defensive play in order to secure a win. Some excellent defensive play from Freya, Daisy, Katie and Jess meant Ferndown were unable to penetrate our defence, and on centre court Alyssa, Poppy and Louisa ensured the ball was kept in PHS possession.

Another PHS win at full-time 6-2.

Wednesday 28th September Game 5 – Purbeck Week 3 of the league saw us play Purbeck. We have always been fairly evenly matched, and this game was no exception. It started off well, with both teams utilising their centre court pass. It was 3-3 going into the second half, so the girls knew they would have to make a break of play in order to place Purbeck under pressure. This came at exactly the right time, and after a centre pass turnover, PHS scored the winning goal resulting in a 5-4 victory. A well-matched game, and a well-deserved win.

Game 6 – Parkstone Grammar (A) We always knew this would be our toughest game, yet these girls entered it with the same enthusiasm as before. Parkstone dominated the game, and were just too quick down the court. Not be disheartened, the girls kept their heads held high and still played some incredible netball. Unfortunately, a 17-1 loss at full time.

Game 7 – Parkstone Grammar (B) This game followed straight away, and the team were a little nervous to say the least. Still, not be too demoralised the girls put on an excellent performance. However, once again they were outmatched on the court and lost 7-0.

Wednesday 5th October Game 8 – Queen Elizabeth The final game of the league saw us play QE. The girls so far had played a successful tournament and were excited for the final game, knowing this would influence final placings. An early break of play saw PHS turn over a QE ball, and some excellent shooting from Jaya and Louisa placed PHS in front at half time.

Encouraged to approach the second half as if the score was 0-0, PHS were more determined than ever to win. A swift and powerful attack from Alyssa and Poppy resulted in a further goal increasing the gap, and a final turnover meant PHS were victorious on the final whistle with a 6-4 win.

Girls Football This term has seen Poole High School field 6 girls’ football teams in numerous competitions. We have been impressed with the standard of play, the ability of individual players as well as the cohesion of teams across the board, but at the time of writing have been knocked out of every competition bar the U15 and U13 County Cup! Fingers crossed we will have good news this week and early next term to sustain our involvement!

Highlights this term have included: -The “little ones’” attendance, enthusiasm and motivation to attend training, determined to improve, despite heavy losses early on in the competitions. The camaraderie shown by this group of girls is hugely commended!

-The role models in Year 8 – we are so proud of you for supporting the Year 7s but also ensuring the Year 9s could play their fixtures, and you are all improving each week and each game.

-The girls in Year 9 who can always be relied upon to volunteer to play, wear the dolphins with pride, and fight to the bitter end!

-Our Year 10s who are just <3 we are in absolute awe of the skill level of individual players, the support you have for each other and the love you have for the game which inspires us each and every game to continue to provide extra-curricular sport!

-The Year 11s who are reluctant to miss revision, but keen to play and genuinely make us howl with laughter in their presence!

-Our Sixth Formers who have been both ambassadors in both the role of player and official, supporting the staff to organise and run teams… as well as the line!

Commendable performances of note: The Azaucka sisters (8 and 10) in goal! We hope Santa has a goal on his sleigh to continue to aid your progress in what is considered the most difficult position in girls’ football!

Kiera Craig, Evelyn Grady, Elise Matthews – in the game that we don’t speak of – you didn’t give up and used both your maturity and experience to ensure no one’s heads went down. I could not have been more proud to have been your teacher during this game. <3 Lola Kellman (7) and Ava Dove (10) proving a force to be reckoned with in defence! Every single game, you have saved the game on multiple occasions and it has been a genuine pleasure to have seen both of you improve during your time at PHS <3 The Year 10 girls who played for the Year 11 team against Lytchett – the 8 of you who played the second half, taking the game to penalties where you were unfortunately knocked out was a “cookie crumbles” situation but your maturity and resilience we are hugely proud of <3 Caitlin, Summer, Carly and Aaron – our backroom team, who we could not do without! Your commitment, enthusiasm and organisation has been invaluable this term <3 Tiziri Belaidi (10) and Evie Harnott (10) who volunteered to come out of Detention, to play in their first ever football match for the school #thesegirlscan Year 7 Football Our Year 7 boys football programme has seen eight competitive fixtures (ESFA School’s Cup and the Dorset County Cup) this side of Christmas with over fifty students regularly attending training on Thursdays. It has been great to see how a positive culture amongst the year group has been created where students and teachers are keen to hear how the squad are getting on. We are still looking to widen the number of players representing the School team in the second half of the season which is already standing at over twenty players!

One of the most rewarding aspects of running this team so far has been the positive feedback received from the opposing managers/teachers, they have commented on how well our players have conducted themselves when representing Poole High School and the number of talented players we have all over the pitch.

Year 9 Football The Year 9 football team are successfully into the next round of the county cup after beating BCS. Mr Howson had a strong squad of 18 players. All players contributed to the victory. A special mention goes to Ned Melvin Dorey, Miles Thompson, Kellon Joyce and Dylan Tippier who all played extremely well. QE awaits in the next round of the county cup along with PEDSSA starting in January.

Year 10 football The Year 10 football team have had a strong start to each game this academic year with 20 different students of the year group representing the team. The most recent game away to Thomas Hardye finished with a strong 3-1 win with a man of the match performance by Codey Wade.

We have an upcoming game away to Wey Valley after Christmas in the county cup. We were finalists in the competition last year so hoping to do one better this time around.

Year 11 Football The Year 11 football team successfully beat QE in the English schools cup this half term. This was an outstanding display by every member of the squad, resulting in a 3-0 victory. A special mention goes to the midfield trio of Rhys Middlewick, Leyton Mitchell and Oliver Parry who worked tirelessly to win the ball back and create numerous chances. The Year 11 football team then had Bishop Wordsworth in the next round and narrowly lost 3-1. We had all the possession but count find a way past their goalkeeper. Corfe Hills awaits in the next round of the county cup along with PEDSSA starting in January.

Year 7 and 8 Swimming Gala at St Michael’s Middle School On Tuesday 29th November, 12 Year 7 and 8 girls and boys represented Pool High School at their first swimming gala held a St Michaels Middle School. The students were to take part in multiple relay races across all swimming strokes in a range of distances.

Poole High started really well winning 5 out of the first 6 races from a mixture of girls only, boys only and mixed replay freestyle races. However, it all fell apart in race 7 and 8 when were disqualified in both races for illegal breaststroke turns, not toughing both hands on the wall simultaneously. Despite this little hick up, we were only 1 point behind the leaders St Michaels 23 to 22 points.

Poole High continued to swim excellently through races 9 to 15 coming first and second in each race for backstroke and butterfly. However, there was another breaststroke relay race 16 where again we were unfortunately disqualified due to an illegal breaststroke turn.

This only left the medley relays and the 8-person freestyle and cannon relays. Poole High again swam really well coming first in 2 out of the 3 relays and second in the third, leaving the score as Poole High 53 points and St Michaels having 56 points.

It was then down to the last 2 relays, which were also worth double points, so we had everything to swim for. Unfortunately, St Michaels beat us in the 8 x 2 lengths freestyle relay with them coming first and Poole High second. Leaving it down to the last relay of 8 x 1 length cannon relay where Poole High were triumphant beating St Michaels who came in second.

The final points were Allanbourn 42, Lychett 47, Poole High 67 and St Michaels winning with 72 points overall. If we didn’t have the disqualifications we might have had a different outcome but it made the afternoon very close making it fun for the students to complete in and enjoy being in the water.

Well done Poole High and watch out for the rematch hoping to be in 2023.

Year 7 Rugby The Year 7 Boys Rugby team started off their PHS Rugby journey in successful fashion as they beat both The Bishop of Winchester and All-Saints academy twice in their pool with over 20 Tries scored! Nico Flower scored a magnificent 10 Tries in their way to a semi-final place. The boys came up against Poole Grammar in a semi-final and lost, extremely narrowly, two tries to one. They all upheld the school values exceptionally and showed great rugby spirit.

Mr Keep is extremely proud of all of their efforts and is excited to see how they progress over the next 5 years.

Year 9 Rugby It was an extremely hardy effort from all the Year 9 boys in their first match this season. Beating Corfe Hills 42-5 in a tight contest against a well drilled team. The attitude was exceptional as well as the Hard Running, Physicality and soft hands. The team look really strong and are looking to build together for a tougher test to come vs Glenmoor and Winton.

It was a wonderful effort from the skipper today, Digby, well done for showing some great Rugby Core Values and playing for the other team, organising attack and defence, and fronting up against your own team-mates. Carter and Will Bavister were strong in the engine room. Miles showed his stupendous sidestep too. My two men of the match were Harry and Kellon. In their first Rugby match they both got fully stuck in!

Year 11 Rugby In their first game for over two Years, the Year 11 Boys came up against a well drilled Lytchett Minster School side who train every week. With one training session under the Poole High boys’ belt, they showed true grit to give a sturdy test to the visitors.

The score line wasn’t a true reflection of the game as the boys, led by the extremely talented Dan Ward and Bruno Skinner, led the game for a period of time in the second half. Lytchett flew out of the blocks and scored 3 early tries before Poole High showed its sporting finesse with Hard Running, Soft Hands and heavy work rate down to both a well-orchestrated backs move finished by Ollie Dady and a monstrous 75 metre charge from Dan Ward. As, similar to watching a rhino, Dan bulldozed his way through each opposing defender and dotted the ball down under the post. To the delighted roar of the Poole High crowd.

Lytchett scored two unanswered tries in response and won the game but the determination of each and every Year 11 was astounding. They showed great rugby values and showed the schools values exceptionally well as they were graceful in defeat while also commending their own efforts.

Mr Keep's man of the match goes to Tom Rees. He provided Hard Hits, strong running and a supreme work rate to get around the pitch and cause problems for Lytchett.

Cross country at Canford School The first cross country race of the season was a fantastic way to get the blood pumping and ready to go for the season ahead. However, jinxed by the weather again, the subsequent two events were postponed at Baiter and Sandbanks, and Ferndown was hosted on our INSET day! We will look forward to the rearranged races in the new year and the county cross county championships in early January.

The team did a great job in the meet with some strong performances by our Year 7 girls team.

However, Charlie Collins stole the show though by coming 3rd in the Year 10 boys race - well done!

Chance to Shine At the time of writing, we are 4 sessions into the Chance to Shine Secondary Girls Leadership programme with Dorset Cricket Board! We have over 60 students from Years 7-10 embracing the opportunity to develop their skill set as both a cricket player and a leader with the view to organising and running events and tournaments as part of the legacy! Here are some of our Year 7 Sports Leaders preparing for their participation in the DCB Cricket tournaments next term!

PE NEWS FTY LAB

FTY Lab As part of our World Cup celebrations we arranged for the team from the FTY Lab to come in and deliver some specialist training to members of our football teams. Ex-Bournemouth footballer Wes Fogden led the session accompanied by Jade Hockey, who plays for Portsmouth, and manager Nick Wells.

The first session kicked off with the girls looking to emulate the success of the Women’s Euros, followed

by Year 7 and 8 then 9, 10 and 6th form boys.

The pupils were put through their paces in the fast feet challenge, skills drills and reaction gates.

The FTY team took the fast feet piece of equipment to the England team just before they departed for the world cup and the team used it in training. Jack Grealish scored just 29 so the gauntlet was laid!

We had some stunning performances including Summer Robbins fancy footwork scoring her 33 then Charlie Partridge dancing his way to the highest score with 40! It also raised bit of healthy competition between the PE team, even Mr Keep had a go, but soon realised he should probably stick to rugby!

It was a fantastic morning and the pupils really enjoyed working with the professionals.

Alex Scott Talk These Girls Can! Our Sixth Form PE and Sport students plus representatives from our girls football squads attended a broadcast from Speakers For Schools in partnership with Penguin talks. They heard from award winning broadcaster and former professional footballer Alex Scott MBE and Debra Nelson from Football Beyond Borders. The focus of the talk was mental health, vulnerability and resilience which coincided with Alex’s new book. The Sixth Form girls then represented the school against Thomas Hardye with the rest of the cohort cheering them on!

Premier League Inspires Programme We are proud to have now signed up to the Premier League Inspires education programme.

The programme is aimed at young people aged between 11-25 and aims to inspire, motivate and empower young people though football.

Now we are part of the programme, we will have access to regular workshops on a variety of relevant topics to educate, motivate and inspire out pupils held at the stadium. The first session was on mental health and wellbeing. It was delivered by AFC Bournemouth coaches and external speakers form the likes of JP Morgan. The afternoon at the stadium, was made even better with a surprise visit from Neto, the teams goal keeper!

Year 12 Real Tennis experience at Canford Real Tennis & Squash Club Our Year 12 A-Level PE students got the chance to experience Real Tennis at Canford School this term.

They were able to use specialist equipment and facilities to gain a better understanding of what they had been studying within their Sport & Society module.

Despite a lot of confidence going into the games, there were varying levels of success amongst the group, the less we say about Mr Keep’s performance the better.

A big thank you to Canford Real Tennis & Squash Club for hosting our students and making the experience so enjoyable.

Leadership Primary Leadership academies We were very pleased to host the primary leadership academy again this year. Eight primary schools participated in a series of workshops over a two day period.

Our young leaders had received training to be able to facilitate and lead a number of activities in the sports hall with the primary young ambassadors. We also led a dance workshop that allowed students to perform to the groups at the end. The feedback on the leaders over the course of the two days was phenomenal and they are a real credit to the school.

They were able to lead with confidence, explain the activities well and made sure that everyone was involved and could succeed. It provided a very exciting and memorable day for those primary school children that attended. Year 5 Multi Sports Festival

Dorset leadership academy @ Bryanston School

On Friday 25th November 50 Year 5 students from Oakdale, Longfleet and Baden Powell attended a Multi Sports event planned and led by PHS Year 12 SLQ Sports Leaders. The leaders have spent the last term learning about the skills needed to be effective sports leaders and this was their chance to put those skills into practice. They planned a skill focusing on a sport and a fun conditioned game ensuring all students' needs and abilities were considered. The Year 5s had fun participating in Tennis, Netball, Football and Rugby and finished the session with a Capture the Flag tournament. Baden Powell left PHS victorious after winning all 4 games, with 1st place medals and a PHS goodie bag.

Well done to Edie Pollard, Michael Brown, Tyler Burden, Carly Gubbins, Ryan Portnow, Dylan Taber, Murray Thomson, Jack Trent and Charlie Vanderweele for the success of the event!

This year, we were delighted to be part of the 10th Year of the Dorset Leadership Academy at Bryanston School, in Blandford, welcoming hundreds of children and young people from Schools across Dorset.

The Dorset Leadership Academy, funded by Active Dorset, offers a wide range of leadership opportunities for children and young people in primary, middle, secondary and special schools across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole and Dorset.

The event at Bryanston saw more than 500 young leaders from 32 schools across the county participate in a variety of workshops delivered by partners and athlete mentors and aimed to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to act as sport and physical activity champions within their schools.

We were fortunate to be joined by three inspirational athlete mentors; Beth Redford international rower, Jamie Barrow, world fastest snowboarder and Jenna Downing the world number one female inline skater and ten times British champion.

We took several students all selected for various different types of leadership training with the aim of being able to grow our own Poole High leadership academy this year.

PE NEWS DANCE

Pavilion Dance Workshop We were lucky enough to be selected to participate in a dance workshop run by Pavilion Dance, that was aimed at boys and breaking down the barriers to their participation in dance.

Year 8 boys were selected to participate in the hour long workshop that introduced the pupils to different styles of dance and rhythms. The group were able to choreograph a Capoeira style dance after only 20 mins of practice. The attitude and effort he boys was just fantastic.

Dance is a statutory part of our PE national curriculum, so we look forward to developing these ideas in lessons.

SHAPE THE FUTURE The Wessex Schools Training Partnership (WSTP) is a School Centred Initial Teacher Training institution based here at Poole High School.

The partnership started to recruit for September 2022 in October and applications are still open. We have an excellent record of training high quality teachers that go on to work in the local area and beyond. If you are interested in becoming a teacher, or know someone who is, please get in touch with WSTP. Y9 START THE YEAR OFF WITH A MATHS FESTIVAL Wednesday 14th September saw our first external career event as we headed over to Bournemouth University to participate in a Maths Festival organised by Project Leader Helen Lewis of BCP's 0-25 Team in conjunction with BU. Students arrived at the Fusion Building for a welcome talk followed by a variety of workshops that demonstrated the value and need for maths qualifications in a variety of professions: the maths roadshow, maths to help patients, the energy crisis, design and calculations, how noise is measured. EMPLOYER ENGAGEMENT Early October we held the first of our series of virtual employer encounters for the Autumn term. These are hugely beneficial in reaching such a wide audience, enabling so many students to hear directly from employers and organisations.

Nearly 1000 students across Y7, 8 & 9 had the pleasure of hearing from Aaron Lawes, a director at accountancy firm PKF-Francis Clark: Chartered accountants & business advisors.

Aaron gave us a great insight to the company, the role of accountants and routes in, answering the many #career related questions from students. He discussed the benefits of a degree, be that through the university route or the emerging degree apprenticeship route. He described the types of clients, the benefits of being part of an international organisation and the family feel of the local office.

The feedback from both students and staff was extremely positive, indicating the value of these encounters on informing our young people of the opportunities and potential pathways ahead of them.

A week or so later and our geography department arranged an online encounter for all of our y8 cohort, with Brian Richards, a chartered engineer and 'Flood Risk Manager' at Dorset Council. Students were covering 'flooding' in the curriculum and Brian was able to put into context the very real issues we face in Dorset as well as discussing risk management.

Brian shared his career path up to his current role, which has also included 10 years working for the Environment Agency (leading a team providing advice to planners on Sustainable Drainage design) and 14 years working for a Water and Sewerage Company (Wastewater Treatment Works and Water Distribution design).

FURTHER ENCOUNTERS: During our second round of careers assemblies this term, our focus for years 11, 12 and 13 was based on labour market information.

To complement the content we welcomed audit manager Ashley Cox of the Poole branch of Mazars who shared a really interesting insight to the company and a day in the life of an audit trainee. Ashley kindly gave up his time over three

mornings to come and engage with our students. The feedback, particularly from the sixth form students, was fantastic and several students went on to attend the Mazars Get ahead: Apprenticeship In-person taster evening held in the Poole office during the evening of the 28th November.

Again, this shows the power of getting professionals in front of the students and we would warmly welcome organisations to volunteer their time for this.

FAKE NEWS, PODCASTING, FILMING & ANIMATION October 12th saw an exciting day for our Media Studies students across years 11 & 12, having been invited to participate in a number of work experience workshops with the BBC at Bournemouth University.

Students got to experience fake news, podcasting, filming and animation as well as hearing from a fantastic panel with regards career opportunities and work experience.

Such a valuable insight and our students commented on how this experience had opened their eyes to the opportunities and routes in, The impact of this has been the number of students looking for work experience opportunities within this field and we are keen to hear from any media companies who could support our Y12 students during the week 22nd to 26th May. CONNECT APP

WORK EXPERIENCE We are delighted to have launched the work experience process for our Y10 and Y12 students ready for 2023.

Y10 students will have received an email in their school email account on 17th November, that has the Connect App QR code to scan. They will then set a PIN and their account will become active. In the app they should add their 3 industry preferences for our records and then complete the 2 skills builder tasks.

The next task is to source a placement and we are asking students to source these themselves. A list of past placement providers has been added to the Y10 Work Experience google classroom which they have all been invited to. We are encouraging students to make multiple applications as there will be other schools actively seeking placements for the same week, so competition will be strong.

The google classroom has CV templates, updates in terms of opportunities that we are made aware of, and the launch assembly is available there in order to refer back to.

Deadline Approaching

Once a student has an agreed placement they will need to enter the details through the app via the ‘self placement’ tab. We will then see this on our platform and will verify the employer details, dates, and health aspects that must be entered when inputting the placement details. We will then submit this and the Changing Education company will follow up on our behalf, in contacting the employer with regards to health & safety and employee liability insurance.

The students have had since 17th November to source placements with the deadline in January, so essentially 2 months to approach employers. This should allow sufficient time to support any students that are really struggling to reach out to employers and to enable all the necessary health and safety and employee liability insurance checks to take place in a timely manner. We are also very conscious that other schools will be seeking placements so wanted to get in early!!

The work experience week for Year 10 runs 12th to 16th June.

Tutors have been supporting their tutees in computer suites and after the January deadline we will put interventions in place during lunchtime and after school to allow the students to make applications if they have not yet been successful.

YR9 & 10 BIMA DIGITAL CAREERS DAY Once again, we were excited to participate in the annual British Interactive Media Association Digital Day 2022. Fifty computer science and media studies students from across years 9 and 10 participated in this national competition supported by the brilliant Matt Desmier and the team from local company BeepDIgital. The BIMA Digital Day is "the only initiative of its kind, BIMA Digital Day gives 11-16 year olds an insight into a world of digital careers. Students compete in a sponsored, nationwide digital challenge for a chance to win £500 cash for their school and some fantastic prizes for themselves."

Alongside the competition element, whereby students were tasked with creating a digital solution for two major companies, the students got to hear about careers within the industry from the team at BeepDigital. From apprenticeship routes to degree routes, from key employability skills and personal traits.

The students had a fantastic experience and demonstrated teamwork, presentation and communication skills, problem solving and numeracy skills.

STUDENT LEARNING You don't have to be a designer to be in the digital sector.

That when solving ideas and working in teams you have to combine ideas and all input to make sure every aspect is looked at.

There are different roles in different jobs based on how you are as a person.

There are other jobs in the industry, not just coding.

Using digital skills are vital for a large variety of jobs.

The amount of different jobs available in the tech industry.

I gained new skills and learnt how to make my way up in a business.

I can use my gcses in computer science, media studies and art to do work for a company that works around digital media.

Not needing to just have coding for jobs in computing.

The different tiers of a company and how long it takes to work up to the top.

That pretty much every job requires some form ,at some point or in the future, of digitalising.

BEING MORE THAN JUST A SOLDIER Team work makes dreamwork and so our students found out during their STEM workshops with the British Army. Not only were they engaged in a number of interactive activities, giving an insight to the role of a soldier, they also got to hear of the diverse range of roles within the forces with the benefits of higher education being accessible and paid for should they chose. From athletes, to medics, mental health nurses to engineers, the many opportunities were shared along with guidance on qualifications.

Career Pilot

STUDENTS RUNNING A BUSINESS FOR A YEAR We are excited to once again, participate in Young Enterprise's flagship programme 'Company Programme'.

Students in year 10 have been invited to form a team and set up their own business. The students are being supported weekly by business volunteers from local company Mazars.

This amazing team have applied for director roles, set up their departments and brainstormed ideas for their product or service.

The company has taken the name Azure Harbour, set up a bank account and are in the process of creating a website and marketing. They have an online trade point and after Christmas, will be working towards manufacturing their product.

To set themselves up with some much needed capital, they have sold shares and attended a number of Christmas trade fairs. They will be pitching their idea to local businesses in February when they will attend a Dragon's Den event.

This national programme sees a number of rounds of competition with the National finalists invited to showcase in the European finals in the summer.

We wish this brilliant bunch all the best on their journey and are proud of the experiences they will be able to include on their CV;s , personal statements and job applications.

AND THERE WE HAVE IT..

Well no. There's more. There's always more!!! We've had Y7 'Careers Focus Week' as well as their visit to the Lighthouse to watch the pantomime and hear of careers within the theatre. There has been another media trip to the Walker Agency, visits to JPMorgan, promotion of our T Level provision new in 2023. We've had careers appointments across Years 11, 12 & 13. We've visited the Bournemouth & Poole College to tour the facilities and hear of their courses and apprenticeships.

There have been sports journalism broadcasts, tutor talks on hospitality roles, an interview with an NHS nurse and sister of ward at Yeovil Hospital / Poole Hospital. In English, students fortnightly discuss how the skills they learn in their curriculum are employability skills. Topics to date include 'What are Employability Skills?', 'Creativity' and 'Critical Thinking'. In art, students attended the AUB Portfolio day to support applications for the Foundation Course. Photography students heard from from a local food photographer about working in the industry and how to set up a Food Photography shoot. MFL have been showing their own recorded interviews with professionals in a range of sectors. Sixth formers attended a UCAS exhibition in Bristol ....

I could go on, but I have run out of space and am exhausted reflecting on all these fantastic opportunities that our young people get to experience.

I will just say, so much more to come!!!!
