Examples of Student Work

Year 7 The first activity in Year 7 is to learn how to draw using perspective. Because this is following a set of clear rules, taught in a step-by-step approach, every student achieves a drawing that look 3D. This often becomes an early confidence boost, with students proud of creating something visually ‘clever’.

Year 7 perspective drawings

Working in 3D. All Year 7 in the first term are asked to create a sculpture at home as part of identifying and showcasing a wider range of ability and interest in art beyond drawing. Pupils are introduced to basic construction techniques and can design/build by using any material based on any idea.

Contextual Studies.

Students are introduced to a range of historical and contemporary makers and learn how to analyse and make links to their own by focusing on the elements and principles of art and design.

Year 7 work developing written and visual annotation and making links to the perspective work and sculpture.

Painting and Colour.

Moving through the year, students are introduced to colour theory and painting techniques.

Learning a range of techniques supporting the idea, there is no one way to create a painting.

There is a role for refined, highly controlled brushwork, as well as loose expressive/gestural mark making.

Year 7 paintings

Year 8 The Year 8 Identity project starts with an exploration of portraiture. This year the project will develop beyond portraiture and will see work illustrating a narrative based on the life of a famous person or the student’s own life.

Year 8 paintings Work will always vary in traditional quality, but we encourage a wide exploration of style and personal response to the project. All work, if made with care and effort has quality to build on.

Year 9 Concept Art. This is a very exciting project in which students are encouraged to respond to a design brief based on the idea of futuristic architecture, costume, or vehicle design. Working in a similar way to a concept artist, students create design portfolio sheets and learn how to develop their ideas by making references to a wide range of sources. This really is a good introduction to GCSE Art & Design, with creative independence promoted throughout. Students will have the opportunity to develop work in a wide range of process, from digital drawings to constructivist sculpture.
