SCHOLARSHIP

SPECTRUM ACADEMIC YEAR 2025-2026

DR. CHARLIE MCCORMICK President Professor of English

DR. JARED MONTOYA Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

DR. CLARK ELLISTON Interim Dean of Faculty Division Director; Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Professor of Religion and Philosophy

The Scholarship Spectrum offers crucial insight into what our faculty do so well – reflect, research, and create for the good of our wider communities. As a university committed to facilitating the holistic growth of students, this research extends into teaching in ways that energize students no less than professors. It animates interest in subjects and ideas our students will carry with them as they leave with achievement. Many of them participate in the very research this Spectrum highlights. Faculty research demonstrates not only expertise in particular areas of study, but also a concern for the greater aggregation of knowledge.

The professors in this Spectrum have committed themselves to works which further our shared understanding of both the world and one another. To be sure, this appears in a myriad of ways. Poster presentations on local ecologies, conference papers on student success and mental health, and monographs on immigration all move us collectively towards better understanding and action. To work alongside such faculty is a privilege. I encounter evidence of excellent teaching walking across campus, but the Spectrum reminds me again of the faculty’s talent and dedication to the life of the mind.

TIFFANY CULVER, PH.D. Associate Professor of Psychology Division Director, Human Performance and Behavior 2025-2026 Recipient of the Award of Excellence in Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Educational psychologists produce volumes of work designed to improve teaching for all disciplines at different levels of education. But all of it is for naught, if we do not embrace change. Change is everywhere. People, fashion, technology all succumb to change. While this has always been a constant, what is true today is the speed of change we witness and experience and the effect it has on society. Gone is the scenario found in the folk story of Rip Van Winkle who slept for twenty years but was still able to neatly fit into society.

Whether professors or students, we all experience change. For some of us, we thread cautiously and others wholeheartedly embrace it. Change is a reality. We see reminders of this in our classrooms. What worked in the past may no longer hold true as our students have changed. Cultural references may not resonate with current students as with past students. While our discipline content holds steady, our methods and strategies must change if we are to connect with students and they connect with the knowledge we wish to bestow upon them.

Our world today embraces change and expects it. It would shock society if we are still using the same Iphones and Galaxies twenty years from now. Some of us have seen the end of chalkboards, slide and overhead projectors. Whiteboards, PowerPoint, Zoom and Smartboards are now the norm in education. But we must not discount the human element.

Let’s not give life to the lyrics in Talking Heads 1980 song “Once in a Lifetime” Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
