Liebe Leserinnen und Leser,

The release of the year's film blockbusters are unmissable dates for me and the other film buffs in the schott aktuell-team toward the end of each year. Top of the list in 2015 are the new James Bond and Star Wars films.

For many years now, we've held a particular passion for film music and the composers that are so crucial for the success of a film.

Pflichttermine für mich und die anderen Cineasten im schott aktuell-Team: Zum Ende eines jeden Jahres starten die großen Blockbuster im Kino, 2015 allen voran James Bond und Star Wars. Unsere besondere Leidenschaft gilt seit vielen Jahren der Filmmusik – und damit jenen Komponisten, die ganz entscheidend zum Erfolg eines Films beitragen.

We recently undertook a project to greatly expand our film music repertoire with works that are also eminently suitable for the concert hall. In the central section of this issue, we present film classics from the Italian, American and Japanese world of cinema. Immortal melodies by composers such as Ennio Morricone (Once Upon a Time in the West) and Luis Enríquez Bacalov (The Postman) can now be found alongside the colourful orchestration of Erich Wolfgang Korngold (The Prince and the Pauper) and Joe Hisaishi’s playful sound (Spirited Away). Discover a wealth of new works in our newly issued catalogue 'Film Music in Concert' which can be ordered by e-mail at infoservice@schott-music.de. On the subject of additions to the repertoire, we offer a warm welcome to Akiko Yamane who was recently signed to Schott Japan. Yamane is one of Japan's foremost young composers and her works are performed internationally. We eagerly anticipate the première of her new work Illuminated Baby and are looking forward to working together.

In our Richard Wagner Critical Edition, we have just issued the third volume of Die Feen and now have the finishing line in sight: With the publication of Das Liebesverbot at the beginning of December, all of Wagner’s thirteen completed operas will be available from Schott in all existing versions, published in 43 volumes.

Im Rahmen der Richard Wagner-Gesamtausgabe haben wir soeben den dritten Band zur Oper Die Feen veröffentlicht. Damit ist der Zieleinlauf in Sicht: Anfang Dezember sind mit dem Erscheinen von Das Liebesverbot alle dreizehn vollendeten Wagner-Opern in sämtlichen Fassungen in 43 Partitur-Bänden bei Schott erhältlich.

by Joan Miró in which the dominant element is a vivid blue. Fragments of objects can be detected: guitar strings, the orange of a Catalan barretina, a smoking pipe. It is the elemental quality of the painting that Anderson was drawn to in writing Catalan Peasant with Guitar.

This piece is part of a series of three pieces by Anderson relating to the colour blue (though not musically related), beginning with his violin concerto, In lieblicher Bläue, and ending with Van Gogh Blue.

In spite of the tragedies for which van Gogh is best known, his letters are filled with joyous exuberance for the practical considerations of his work: what he will paint next and, most importantly, what colours he will use. For Julian Anderson, it seems the painter relishes ‘the sheer stuff of which his art is made’.

In Van Gogh Blue, Anderson relishes the sheer stuff of which his own art is made. It’s a very physical, highly contrasted work about the joy of sound. Instrumental colour plays a large role, and Anderson’s use of two mobile clarinetists allows extra colour as their sound moves through the acoustic space of the hall.

Ausgangspunkt waren die Briefe von Vincent van Gogh. Ungeachtet der persönlichen Tragödien des Malers sind sie voll ausgelassener Fröhlichkeit, mit der van Gogh die praktischen Begleitumstände seines Schaffens behandelt: Was wird er als nächstes malen und, vor allem, welche Farben wird er verwenden? Julian Anderson spürt die Freude des Malers daran, über die grundlegenden Elemente seiner Kunst zu schreiben.

Die reinen Elemente seiner eigenen Kunst reflektiert auch Anderson in Van Gogh Blue. Es ist ein auffallend kontrastreiches Werk über die Freude am Klang als physikalischem Element. Instrumentaler Klang spielt eine wichtige Rolle, und Andersons Verwendung von zwei mobilen Klarinetten fügt eine besondere Farbe hinzu, wenn ihr Klang sich durch den Raum des Konzertsaals bewegt.

Der Titel von Julian Andersons erstem Werk für Gitarre bezieht sich auf ein Gemälde von Joan Miró, in dem ein strahlendes Blau die vorherrschende Farbe ist. Objektfragmente sind sichtbar: Gitarrensaiten, das Orange einer katalanischen Barretina, eine rauchende Pfeife. Die überragende Qualität dieses Gemäldes regte Anderson dazu an, Catalan Peasant with Guitar zu komponieren.

Das Stück ist der zweite Teil einer Serie von drei Werken, in denen Anderson sich mit der Farbe Blau auseinandersetzt, beginnend mit seinem Violinkonzert In lieblicher Bläue und endend mit Van Gogh Blue.

John Casken Stolen Airs basiert auf einer Episode von Sylvie and the Songman, meiner neuen Oper, an der ich zusammen mit dem Romanautor Tim Binding schreibe. Der Songman entwickelt eine Technik, mit der er Stimmen und Lieder von Vögeln, Tieren aller Art und sogar von Menschen rauben kann. Auch Sylvies Stimme nimmt er ihr langsam weg, bietet ihr aber an, sie zurückzugeben, wenn Sylvie ihm das Geheimnis ihres Vaters verrät.

Dieser hat eine Gruppe neuartiger Instrumente gebaut, die einen wunderbaren Wohlklang erzeugen.

Stolen Airs beschreibt dieses Szenarium mit musikalischen Mitteln: Aus einem dunklen Klangraum wachsen drei Airs; eine vierte, weit entfernte und ganz anders klingende Air bildet die ruhige Coda.

The Songman has developed the technique of stealing the voices and songs of birds and animals, and eventually humans. The piece Knights of the strange is a piece of music poetry. Where a few words highlight the speculative / poetic connections between dreams, reality and reflection. The piece includes in it another piece: Knights of the strange (Duo). Duo is like an independent plant which comes from another climate inside the jungle of the tutti version. Both pieces are dedicated to my son Ko, as he leaves home for college. The title of the piece is taken from a book Ko created when he was four. The piece also includes some spoken phrases which are very mundane exchanges at home. The piece is also dedicated

to ensemble PHACE and to the LA Philharmonic for whom it was written. It is a piece where there is a real braiding between groups of the instruments. It is a very close look at the smallest mechanisms of impulse and reaction and at how impulse and reaction, when faced with some random element, can take quite a surprising turn into an unexpected Chaya Czernowin territory.

Knights of the strange ist musikalische Poesie, bei der wenige Worte die spekulativen / poetischen Verbindungen zwischen Traum, Realität und Reflexion beschreiben. Dem Stück ist ein weiteres Werk eingeschrieben: Knights of the Strange (Duo). Duo ähnelt einer solitären Pflanze, die aus einer anderen Klimazone des Dschungels der TuttiVersion stammt. Beide Werke sind meinem Sohn Ko anlässlich seines Aufbruchs ins College gewidmet.

Der Titel stammt aus einem Buch, das Ko im Alter von vier Jahren schrieb. Es enthält Zitate alltäglicher häuslicher Gespräche als gesprochene Passagen und ist ein enges Geflecht zwischen den Instrumentengruppen. Zugleich ist es ein Blick aus nächster Nähe auf die kleinsten Mechanismen von Impuls und Reaktion: Welche unerwarteten Wege in unbekannte Territorien gehen Impuls und Reaktion, wenn sie auf Elemente des Zufalls treffen? Ich widme das Stück auch dem Ensemble PHACE und Los Angeles Philharmonic, für die ich es komponierte.

Note by note, layer by layer, and from top to bottom: Sound keeps falling with gravity. That persistant repetition of sound grows into a long decending chromatic scale.

Eventually, we are covered by the sound of a limitless fall, involving the full range of the orchestra and compressing rhythm of 6 - 5 - 4 - 3 2 - 1. Like a fate we cannot resist or a time we cannot return to, the sound leads to a dead end.

Atsuhiko Gondai Klang folgt den Regeln der Schwerkraft – Note für Note, Schicht für Schicht, von oben nach unten. Fortwährende Wiederholung von Klängen wächst zu einer langen absteigenden chromatischen Tonleiter.

Diese unendliche Abwärtsbewegung umfasst alle Orchestergruppen. Die sich verkürzende Zeit und ein komprimierter Rhythmus von 6 - 5 - 4 3 - 2 - 1 erfassen uns wie ein Schicksal, dem wir nicht entrinnen können, oder wie die Zeit, die wir nicht zurückdrehen können. Das Stück führt uns in eine Einbahnstraße, die eine Sackgasse ist.

Dieses Concerto folgt der Struktur einer italienischen Ouvertüre – schnell, langsam, schnell. Der erste Satz zeigt eine Sonatenform mit drei Themen (ein rhythmisches Thema, ein orientales Thema und ein Walzer), aber ohne Durchführung. Der zweite Satz ist durch ein Anfangsthema mit Chopinartigen Konturen bestimmt, dem ein lebhafteres sowie ein Choralthema folgen, begleitet vom Glockenspiel der hohen Klavierregister. Das Choralthema wird in der Reprise Kadenzartig variiert. Der Schluss ist ein Rondo-Finale mit einem fröhlichen Refrain, wirbelnd wie eine Tarantella. Seine festlichen und tänzerischen Episoden sind mit dem Perpetuum mobile des Refrains und seinen Variationen verknüpft und münden in eine brilliante Naji Hakim Coda.

The first movement is a sonata form without development, based on three themes, respectively rhythmical, oriental, waltz. The second movement is characterised by an initial theme with chopinesque-contours, followed by a more agitated theme and a choral-theme accompanied by a carillon in the treble of the piano. The recapitulation includes a cadenza, variation on the choral-theme. The finale is a rondo with a happy refrain twirling as a tarentella. Its festive and dancing episodes are conjugated with the perpetuum mobile of the refrain and its variations, until the brilliant and luminous coda.

• 2 Nov 2015 · Tokyo (J) Suntory Hall Susanne Elmark, soprano Ilse Eerens, soprano Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra Conductor Kazushi Ono + 17 Nov Luxembourg (L), 19 Nov Berlin (D) For me, music expression used to be a method to find the harmony between human and nature; however, since the Tohoku earthquake in 2011, I began to re-contemplate how the existence of music should be. Music is a type of Shamanism; people pray by music, and calm the spirit of the deceased, creating a bridge between this world and afterlife. The two sopranos are Mikos in this piece. The first half of the music is an expression of a storm using only the orchestra. In the second half, the two sopranos sing Hermann Hesse’s poem which is a depiction of a flower that experienced storm and gradually regains the world of light.

Toshio Hosokawa Musik war für mich stets ein Mittel, die Harmonie zwischen Mensch und Natur zu finden. Nach dem TohokuErdbeben von 2011 begann ich jedoch, neu über Musik nachzudenken. Sie ist eine Form des Schamanismus; Menschen beten mit ihrer Hilfe und besänftigen die Geister der Verstorbenen, indem sie durch sie eine Brücke zwischen dem Hier und dem Jenseits formen. In meinem Stück fungieren die beiden Soprane als Mikos [Frauen, die in Shinto--Schreinen als Mittler zwischen Menschen und Göttern wirken, Anm. d. Red.]. In der ersten Hälfte malt das Orchester allein einen Sturm. Im zweiten Teil singen die Soprane Hermann Hesses Gedicht über eine Blume, die nach einem Sturm langsam wieder das Licht findet.

• 2 Dec 2015 · Grenoble (F) Maison de la Culture Belcea Quartet + 4 Dec Berlin (D), 8 and 9 Dec Wien (A), 10 Dec Luxembourg (L), 19 Dec London (UK) In writing his fourth string quartet, Thomas Larcher returned to classical form taking inspiration from the restrictions that the instrumentation naturally imposes. As in a classical quartet, there are four movements in the form fast-slow-scherzo-finale.

In contrast to his previous quartet Madhares, Larcher adheres largely to the use of conventional playing techniques.

The title comes from the blindingly bright second movement, which brings to mind stained-glass church windows. This brightness is contrasted with the darkness of the outer movements, but the whole work is full of energy.

Each movement is dedicated to the memory of someone who died during the work’s genesis.

Mit seinem vierten Streichquartett kehrt Thomas Larcher zur klassischen Form zurück und ließ sich dabei durch die Begrenzung inspirieren, die die Instrumentalbesetzung vorgibt. Wie in einem klassischen Quartett gibt es vier Sätze: schnell, langsam, Scherzo, Finale. Auch die Spieltechnik ist, im Gegensatz zu seinem dritten Quartett Madhares, weitgehend konventionell. Der Titel wurde vom blendend strahlenden zweiten Satz inspiriert, der an farbige Kirchenfenster erinnert. Seine Helligkeit kontrastiert mit der Dunkelheit der übrigen Sätze, das ganze

Werk ist dennoch voller Energie. Jeder Satz ist dem Andenken von Menschen gewidmet, die während der Entstehung des Werkes verstarben.

Der dritte Satz zollt ausdrücklich Claude Debussy Tribut, dessen Musik großen Einfluss auf Bernard Rands’ musikalische Ästhetik ausübt. Besonders Debussys Jeux bilden den Subtext für diesen Satz, wenngleich keine direkten Zitate verwendet werden. Stattdessen wird der Geist von Jeux beschworen – manchmal ganz offensichtlich, manchmal eher geheimnisvoll.

The three movements of this work correspond to the eight trigrams of the ‘Ye Jing’ (or ‘I Ching’, ‘Book of Changes’). It is not the intention to imitate Chinese rhythmic and melodic forms; the tonal material rather stays within the conventions of western music. The bridge to Chinese music results from the use of the sheng, one of the oldest musical instruments, and the spiritual principles translated into sound.

Die Komposition exponiert ein musikalisches Thema, dessen wildwuchernde Veränderungen in drei Sätze gefasst sind, die einigen der berühmten acht Triagramme des „I Ging“ (des „Buches der Veränderungen“) entsprechen. Das Werk will nicht in Rhythmik oder Melodik asiatische Vorbilder imitieren, sondern bleibt im Tonmaterial eher in den Sprachkonventionen der westlichen Musik. Der Brückenschlag zur chinesischen Musik entsteht vor allem durch den Einsatz der Sheng (eines der ältesten Musikinstrumente) und das formale Umsetzen der vorgegebenen geistigen Prinzipien in klangliche Wachstumsprozesse.

The third movement is an overt tribute and reference to Claude Debussy whose music has been a life-long influence on Bernard Rands’ musical aesthetic. Quite specifically, Debussy’s Jeux is a subtext to the music of this movement though no quotations from Debussy’s music are used.

Rather, the spirit of Jeux is evoked – sometimes quite overtly and at other times rather mysteriously.

With traces of familiar fairy tales such as Cinderella and Snow White, the story tells of a beautiful, hardworking but unloved stepdaughter and her search for a violet in the snow. Ultimately she receives help from the months of the year and her kindheartedness is rewarded.

Since the early 1990s, Kangas has conducted the premieres of many of Vasks’ numerous works for string orchestra with his own Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra. The seven-minute Musica serena spans a wide dynamic range, building up from softly shimmering violin harmonics in the ‘Andante cantabile’ to the central ff of the ‘Maestoso’, gradually regaining its calm in the pp leading into the harmonic notes of the work’s beginning.

Mit Musica serena (serena = heiter, klar, unbeschwert) ehrt Pe-teris Vasks den finnischen Dirigenten und langjährigen Freund Juha Kangas zu dessen 70. Geburtstag. Seit den frühen 1990er Jahren leitet Kangas mit seinem Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra immer wieder Uraufführungen von Vasks‘ zahlreichen Kompositionen für Streichorchester. Die siebenminütige Musica serena spannt einen weiten dynamischen Bogen: Sie steigert sich von leise schimmernden Violinen-Flageoletts im „Andante cantabile“ zum ff des „Maestoso“ und klingt nach schrittweiser Beruhigung wieder im pp mit den anfänglichen Flageoletttönen aus.

■ Luis Enríquez Bacalov Luis Enríquez Bacalov’s career as a film composer began in Italy in 1963. He created numerous soundtracks for Spaghetti Westerns and also worked with renowned directors including Damiano Damiani, Ettore Scola, Federico Fellini and Pier Paolo Pasolini. In 1996, his music for Il postino by Michael Radford won an Oscar for ‘Best Music (Original Dramatic Score)’.

■ Klaus Doldinger Since the 1960s, Klaus Doldinger has been considered one of the most significant and renowned German composers for film and television. Many of his scores have achieved cult status, including the title melody to the TV crime series Tatort and the music for international blockbusters The Boat and The Neverending Story. The orchestral suites presented by Schott are scored for standard orchestra and are suitable for good amateur orchestras.

He has won seven Japanese Academy Awards for ‘Best Film Music’ and received the ‘Medal of Honour with purple ribbon’ from the Japanese government in 2009.

He has been a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 2013.

Joe Hisaishi wurde vor allem durch seine Zusammenarbeit mit dem Animefilm-Regisseur Hayao Miyazaki (Chihiros Reise ins Wunderland, Das wandelnde Schloss, Mein Nachbar Totoro, Kikis kleiner Lieferservice) und dem Regisseur Takeshi Kitano (Kikujiros Sommer) bekannt. ■ Erich Wolfgang Korngold It was the director Max Reinhardt who summoned Erich Wolfgang Korngold to Hollywood to work on his production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 1934. Only a few years later in 1938 the composer took up residence there and went on to become one of the most soughtafter film music composers in the United States, perfecting the genre of symphonic film music during the course of his career. His film soundtracks received five Academy Award nominations before winning Oscars for ‘Best Original Score’ for Anthony Adverse in 1936 and The Adventures of Robin Hood in 1938.

Der Regisseur Max Reinhardt holte Erich Wolfgang Korngold für seine Produktion von A Midsummer Night’s Dream 1934 nach Hollywood, wo sich der Komponist 1938 niederließ. Korngold avancierte zu einem der gefragtesten Filmmusikkomponisten der USA und perfektionierte im Laufe seiner Karriere die Gattung der symphonischen Filmmusik. Seine Filmmusik wurde fünfmal für den Oscar nominiert.

■ Ennio Morricone Ennio Morricone played a decisive part in the development of the film music genre with film music for Spaghetti Western classics such as Once Upon a Time in the West and Giuseppe Tornatore’s Cinema Paradiso.

Morricone has received a multitude of awards for his more than 500 works: he has won the Nastro d’Argento in the category ‘Best Film Music’ on nine occasions, and has been nominated six times for an Oscar and eight times for a Golden Globe. In 1999, he was awarded the European Film Prize for his lifetime achievements and the Musikhochschule Munich appointed him as honorary senator in 2003. In 2007, he received an Oscar for his lifetime achievements.

Mit seinen Filmmusiken zu ItaloWestern-Klassikern wie Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod oder zu Giuseppe Tornatores Cinema Paradiso hat Ennio Morricone das Genre Filmmusik entscheidend geprägt. ■ Miklós Rózsa ■ Goffredo Petrassi Goffredo Petrassi was one of the leading Italian composers of the 20th century. His compositions initially displayed Neo-Baroque and Neoclassical stylistic tendencies, but Petrassi later devoted himself to twelve-tone music and serialism. Cronaca familiare was the last of four film soundtracks he composed between 1949 and 1962.

Goffredo Petrassi war einer der führenden italienischen Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Seine Kompositionen folgten anfangs einem neoklassizistischen und neobarocken Stil, später wandte Petrassi sich der Zwölftonmusik und dem Serialismus zu.

Cronaca familiare ist die letzte von vier Filmmusiken, die Petrassi zwischen 1949 und 1962 komponierte.

■ Mikis Theodorakis Of the more than seventy films for which Mikis Theodorakis has written music since 1953, many have been appeals against state despotism, war, corruption and police violence. His soundtracks for films such as Serpico by Sidney Lumet and Actas de Marusia by Miguel Littin exemplify his commitment to the political and controversial issues of his time. In 2002, Theodorakis was awarded the ‘Erich-Wolfgang-Korngold-Prize’ by the German foundation Deutsche Kinemathek to honour his lifetime achievements within the field of film music.

28 December 2015 We send our warmest wishes to Alvin Singleton who celebrates his 75th birthday! Many events are scheduled throughout the season in honor of the occasion, including a portrait concert at New York’s Roulette Intermedium on 10 March 2016 featuring works for strings and piano, as well as the world première of a new work for chorus and ensemble as part of the Cincinnati May Festival, conducted by James Conlon. Additional performances include Singleton’s recent orchestral work Different River by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra on 7 April 2016, conducted by Robert Spano, and Where the Good Sounds Live by the Drexel University Concert Band where Singleton will be in residence in December.

Paul Hindemith and Gottfried Benn

Paul Hindemith was born on 16 November 1895 in Hanau and died on 29 December 1963 in Frankfurt am Main. After studies at the Hoch Conservatoire in Frankfurt, he began his musical career at the age of 20 as the concertmaster of the city’s opera orchestra. His additional concert activity as a viola player and a member of the Amar Quartet soon secured him an international reputation. He was appointed Professor for Composition at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin in 1927, but after the National Socialists seized power, he travelled first to Turkey and then to the United States where he taught as a professor at Yale University from 1940 to 1953. A professorship in musicology at the University of Zurich followed between 1951 and 1957. Alongside these activities, he developed a highly active career as a conductor of his own compositions and the works of other composers from Monteverdi to Alban Berg.

Hindemith published numerous books on musical aesthetics and music theory including the volume A Composer’s World, based on a lecture series he gave at Harvard University, initially written in English and later translated into German.

His fascination with railways is legendary; a photo taken during his years in Berlin shows him playing with model railways with the poet Gottfried Benn and during his time in the USA, he learned the timetables of the East coast railroad by heart.

His creative output spans all possible genres: works for orchestra, solo concertos, chamber music for an extraordinarily wide range of different instruments, choral works, lieder, ballets and operas. Cardillac (1925-26/1952), Mathis der Maler (1934-35) and Die Harmonie der Welt (1956-57) represent major contributions to the field of music theatre and the repertoire of international opera houses.

Diese führte ihn als konzertierenden Bratscher sowie als Mitglied des Amar-Quartetts bald zu internationaler Wirkung. 1927 als Professor für Komposition an die Berliner Hochschule für Musik berufen, wirkte er nach der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten zunächst in der Türkei, dann in den USA, wo er von 1940 bis 1953 als Professor an der Yale University unterrichtete. Von 1951 bis 1957 hatte er den Lehrstuhl für Musikwissenschaft an der Universität Zürich inne. Daneben entfaltete er als Dirigent eigener Werke und der anderer Komponisten von Monteverdi bis Alban Berg eine rege Konzerttätigkeit.

Bertold Hummel 90 27 November 2015 27 November 2015 marks what would have been the 90th birthday of Bertold Hummel. Among his best-known works are the Third Symphony ‘Jeremia’, op. 100, Visionen for large orchestra, and his outstanding Percussion Concerto.

During his life, Hummel received numerous prizes and accolades for his extensive compositional output, including the Kulturpreis der Stadt Würzburg and the ‘Orlando-di-Lasso-Medaille’ awarded by the Allgemeiner Cäcilien-Verband. He was admitted as a member of the Bayerische Akademie der Schönen Künste (Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts) in 1982. In founding the festival Würzburger Tage für Neue Musik, he set important benchmarks for the contemporary music world. He was given the post of Lecturer at the Musikhochschule in Würzburg, where he subsequently served as President.

Am 27. November 2015 wäre Bertold Hummel 90 Jahre alt geworden. Zu seinen bekanntesten Kompositionen zählen die 3. Sinfonie „Jeremia“, op. 100, die Visionen für großes Orchester und vor allem sein Konzert für Schlagzeug und Orchester. Für sein vielseitiges Schaffen erhielt er zahlreiche Preise und Ehrungen, unter anderem den Kulturpreis der Stadt Würzburg und die „Orlandodi-Lasso-Medaille“ des Allgemeinen Cäcilien-Verbands. 1982 wurde er als Mitglied in die Bayerische Akademie der Schönen Künste aufgenommen.

Als Begründer der Würzburger Tage für Neue Musik setzte er entscheidende Akzente für das zeitgenössische Musikleben. Eine Lehrtätigkeit führte ihn an die Würzburger Musikhochschule, der er später als Präsident vorstand.

Bohuslav Martinu° 125

Bohuslav Martinu° was born in Bohemia in 1890 and lived through the shattering times of the first half of the twentieth century. In the face of upheaval and the loss of his homeland, Martinu° remained a cheerful, versatile man full of energy and creativity. He was particularly influenced by the French composers of the time, but also by Czech folk music.

In the 1920s he took lessons with Albert Roussel in Paris as well as with Josef Suk. Again and again, we find evidence of Martinu° ’s interests and hobbies in his music, amongst others animals, flying and sport, especially football, swimming and boxing – all disciplines which the composer pursued himself.

In music, Martinu° was interested in jazz, classicism but also in experimental and highly dissonant sounds. As in life, he was open to inspiration and gratefully accepted what came along.

At the onset of the Second World War, Martinu° was forced to flee to the USA. He often turned to his Czech roots, writing numerous songs on Czech texts. At the end of the war, he was unable to return to Prague. He lived first in Nice from 1953, then in Rome and spent the last years of his life in Switzerland.

Bohuslav Martinu° wurde 1890 in Böhmen geboren und lebte in einer Zeit, die immer wieder massive Veränderungen und Eingriffe in die Lebensumstände mit sich brachte. Dennoch begegnen wir in Martinu° einem lebensfrohen, vielseitigen Menschen voller Schaffenskraft. Besonders die Musik des französischen Impressionismus beeinflusste ihn, aber auch die tschechische Volksmusik.

In den 1920er Jahren nahm er Unterricht bei Albert Roussel in Paris sowie bei Josef Suk. Immer wieder finden wir in Martinu° s Musik Spuren seiner Interessen und Hobbies: Tiere, die Fliegerei oder Sport, insbesondere Fußball, Schwimmen und Boxen – lauter Diszplinen, die der sportliche Komponist selbst betrieb. Musikalisch begeisterte sich Martinu° für den Jazz, den Klassizismus, aber auch für experimentelle und stark dissonante Klänge. Wie im Leben war er offen für Inspirationen und nahm dankbar an, was ihm begegnete.

Im Zweiten Weltkrieg musste Martinu° in die USA fliehen. Dort besann er sich in seinen Kompositionen oft auf die tschechische Tradition und schrieb zahlreiche Lieder auf tschechische Texte. Nach Prag konnte er nicht mehr zurückkehren. Statt dessen lebte er ab 1953 zunächst in Nizza, dann in Rom und verbrachte seine letzten Lebensjahre schließlich in der Schweiz.

Gerd Natschinski 23.8.1928 – 4.8.2015 Gerd Natschinski, who died in Berlin on 4 August, was one of the outstanding German composers of popular music theatre. His Mein Freund Bunbury is one of the most successful works in the genre with more than 150 productions since its Berlin première in 1964.

Performance material for all his stage works, including Ein Fall für Sherlock Holmes, first performed in Erfurt in 1982, and the five-part cycle Das Dekameronical based on Giovanni Boccaccio’s amorous tales and produced for East German television in the late 1970s, is available from Schott. Caballero, which received its first performance at the Musikalische Komödie in Leipzig in 1988, was Natschinski’s adaptation of Tirso de Molina’s comedy Don Gil von den grünen Hosen.

Natschinski’s musical Casanova, created in 1976 in cooperation with his long-standing librettist Jürgen Degenhardt, was his most successful work alongside Mein Freund Bunbury.

Er war einer der bedeutendsten deutschen Komponisten für unterhaltendes Musiktheater, sein Musical Mein Freund Bunbury gehört mit weit über 150 Inszenierungen seit der Berliner Uraufführung 1964 zu den erfolgreichsten Werken des Genres: Gerd Natschinski. Am 4.

August ist er in Berlin verstorben.

In Caballero, 1988 an der Musikalischen Komödie Leipzig uraufgeführt, verarbeitete Natschinski Tirso de Molinas Komödie Don Gil von den grünen Hosen.

Sein zusammen mit Jürgen Degenhardt, seinem langjährigen Librettisten, 1976 geschaffenes Musical Casanova war neben Mein Freund Bunbury Natschinskis erfolgreichstes Werk.

Awards for Schott Composers In August, Peter Eötvös was presented with the Hungarian Order of Saint Stephen, the highest of Hungary’s state awards. Hungarian president János Áder commended Eötvös’s compositional achievements and commitment to the education of young musical talent.

Enjott Schneider received an honorary award the same month on 22 August from ‘SoundTrack_Cologne 12’. The jury praised Schneider’s work in composition as well as journalism, alongside his volunteer work. On 10 September, Heinz Holliger was awarded the Swiss Grand Prix Musik, conferred by the Swiss Federal Office for Cultural affairs for outstanding and innovative musical achievements in Switzerland. Krzysztof Penderecki received the Mondomusica Award in the composition category at this year’s Mondomusica on 27 September.

Peter Eötvös wurde im August der Ungarische Sankt Stephans-Orden verliehen, die höchste staatliche Auszeichnung des Landes. Präsident János Áder lobte nicht nur seine Verdienste als Komponist und Dirigent, sondern auch den Einsatz für die Ausbildung junger Nachwuchskünstler. Am 22. August wurde Enjott Schneider mit dem Ehrenpreis von „SoundTrack_Cologne 12“ ausgezeichnet. Die Jury würdigte damit sein kompositorisches und publizistisches Schaffen sowie sein ehrenamtliches Engagement für die Musik und deren Urheber. Heinz Holliger hat am 10. September den Schweizer Grand Prix Musik erhalten. Die Auszeichnung des Bundesamts gilt einem herausragenden innovativen Musikschaffen in der Schweiz. Im Rahmen der Mondomusica erhielt Krzysztof Penderecki am 27. September den Mondomusica Award in der Kategorie „Komposition“.

Paul Dessau – The Starevich Scores P

aul Dessau became involved in composing music for film when it was still a new artform. Before he became a sought-after film composer, Dessau wrote musical accompaniments for silent films to be performed live at film screenings.

In the late 1920s, Dessau worked as a conductor and composer at the famous first-run cinema ‘Alhambra’ on Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm. The supporting programme to the main feature always included ten-minute children’s films which changed every week, among them early animated cartoons by Walt Disney as well as two puppet films by Ladislas Starevich. For these silent films, Dessau composed charming music for chamber orchestra which was well received by both the audience and the critics.

ls Paul Dessau begann, Filmmusik zu komponieren, war das Medium Film noch jung. Lange bevor er sich als gefragter Tonfilm-Komponist einen Namen machte, schrieb er Begleitmusik, die live zu den damals noch tonlosen Filmen gespielt wurde.

In den späten 20er Jahren arbeitete Dessau als Dirigent und Komponist am berühmten Uraufführungskino „Alhambra“ am Berliner Kurfürstendamm.

Dort wurden im wöchentlich wechselnden Turnus als Beiprogramm zu den Hauptfilmen immer zehnminütige Kurzfilme, zumeist Kinderfilme, gezeigt, unter anderem frühe Zeichentrickfilme von Walt Disney und die beiden Puppen-Animationsfilme von Ladislaus Starewitch. Die charmante Begleitmusik für Kammerensemble, die Dessau für diese Stummfilme schrieb, begeisterte das Publikum und die Kritiker gleichermaßen.
